Note: According to muOS dev's, here's the explanations for shaders in case you don't want to remove them, they serve a purpose: "The reason we ship with a default shader is to remove jittering/stuttering you'll see in some games. You'll notice this very easily if you boot SMB1 on NES without shaders or filters and just run right for a few seconds. There's been a lot of time put into fixing this (it's actually particularly egregious on StockOS). I think we have a fix that should make the next build (and is already in the 28xx build) that won't require a shader. You could also enable the Normal4x filter which will remove that issue as well."
Enabling shaders won't fix the frame-stutter in all cases, setting "threaded video:off" + enabling shaders will do. th-cam.com/video/QFosVsWslU4/w-d-xo.html
For anyone curious, I see some people asked in the comments, your sd card might show different under "Partition Scheme" and "Target System". You don't need to format or reconfigure partitions before using Rufus as after it completes it will be correct. Excellent guide, thank you for your hard work.
Just ordered my first retro handheld ever and will be using this guide to set it up with beans. Praying I learn to flash the sd properly. Thanks for the guide!
This video was extremely helpful! I really appreciate you making this. I was using stock OS because I actually liked it but was having issues where it kept crashing every time I booted it up. Finally decided to download muOS and got everything working perfectly including moving my Pokemon Emerald save file over because of this!
I followed your Tips and now 2 days later i have a full blown 128GB Setup. MuOS is good, but it has a few bugs that don't pop up at first glance... BUT if you put your mind deep into it, it finally works. MuOS has RetroArch 1.18.0 vs. Stock with 1.10.3.
Very nice video! I couldn't find a more complete guide in my language to set up this console with custom firmware, but your explanation is pure gold. Even though my English is very poor, I understood everything and really liked the final result. Keep it up, man! Greetings from Mexico.
You should ask why they ship it with threaded video ON by default, the devices are good enough to not use it, it creates stutters and adds input latency. At least you can turn it off in the config file in a PC (it freezes if you do it on the device)
Joey - I actually figured out a much more streamlined method for this that doesn't require doing each system individually. You can use global settings, choose the mix, and in the path, set it to %ROMROOTFOLDER%\box and it will create and populate a box folder in each individual rom directory. Then all you have to do is move the box folder from each rom folder to the correct spot in the catalog folder. This helps to not have to mess with those settings for every single system. Also, I removed the created .dat file from the rom directory to see if it was needed, and it doesn't seem to be, so can be removed. Also, just for the sake of full explanation of my setup - I have a 2 SD card setup, with the roms on the 2nd card in retroarch/es-de style folder structure (the abbreviations), and I didn't need to rename any folders for this to work. Thanks for the video! Hope this helps!
...you can also speed this up even more by simply changing the path to %ROMROOTFOLDER%\preview, change to the preview mix, run the scrape again, and then copy BOTH box and preview folders from the rooms folder to the respective system folder under catalog
This is amazing. I just ordered my 35xx h from aliexpress today. I hope someone makes an updated video of how some n64 games run on this new os while I wait for it

I have two problems with muOS: I can’t configure the controllers for N64 and most importantly I can’t boot up games using the external rice core, but I know that my roms are not the issue. Is there any guide available?
Awesome video man. I've noticed that removing the shaders makes NES and SNES roms stutter for some reason. Also happens in Botacera. Not sure why. Also, the DOSBox-Pure core won't recognize the DPad inputs in MuOS for dos games.
I just made an IMG and booted up MuOS..truly smooth. Question: Does it have video player support (MP4, MKV, etc..), like the latest stock Ok of anbernic??
Thank you very much for this highly detailed tutorial about muOS on RG35XX Plus. Would it be possible to explain how to use the script from antiKk to get the meta text with Skraper?
Is the battery drain issue fixed with this OS? It happens to me even with stockOS (that I switch off with full battery and I switch on next day to maybe 80%). Thanks!
This looks soooo clean! Going to work on this on my 2nd xxH handheld. Now I understand that this guide is meant for the handhelds being mentioned But Is muos also on the OG Rg35XX and is it any good?
Try connecting it to an alternate device, or use a different reader. I have an Anker card reader that will not read the new Sandisk 512gb card I just got, but it'll read other cards, and that card will work with other readers. I think there's probably a software solution that could fix your problem, but it's above the my pay grade
After flashing the sd card, insert it into the device and let it boot up fully until you are presented with the main menu etc, then power off the device and put the sd card back into your computer or laptop. You should be able to see it appear in disk management and assign a drive letter after that.
Good guide but do I need to format my 252 gb sd card to fat 32 before flashing the cfw onto it with rufus? Any specific settings for formatting and flashing I should have too? Cant wait ti try out this cfw on my rg35xx h for some n64 emulation.
Great walkthrough as always! You are my go-to for all handheld reviews and CFW videos. I am still having trouble launching N64 and Dreamcast games on muOS however. Thanks! --EDIT: I pressed select in the games list and selected a core for N64 (rice) but my games still won't launch. Any idea why?
Not yet, but it DOES have built in backup utilities that greatly simplify updating the OS. Also, it's 100% NOT complicated putting your roms on a secondary SD - in fact, you can scrape all your systems and then your games and box art will stay there, and you can backup your saves and configs before flashing a new update, then restore those backups and be up and running immediately.
Whenever i try to do this setup, my roms starts becoming hidden after loading up a game file. No content found. Then put it on p.c, boom game roms gone, but the GB storage size is the same.
Help ,Hey, I'm wondering what happened to MUos when I go to the games folder of a given console and press A, and it throws me to the console menu. Previously, every game was turned on only through retroarch one at a time and I can't add it to my favorites either. Y shows that it's added, but it's there there is no way to fix it so that it would be like before, I pressed it and the game started
how do you set to auto boot last game? also for some reason I done the scraping and it worked but they do not appear when I scroll through my games list, no preview or box art. Not sure what I've done wrong. Great video helped me set up my RG35xxH.
I figured out you cannot have roms in seperate folders it has to just be the rom file within the console folder itself it cant be console folder>rom folder>rom otherwise the skraper will put all your image files in a sub folder too and they will not appear when you scroll games.
I didn't do a list specific to this device and muos, but here's my general list: joeysretrohandhelds.com/guides/android-emulation-setup-guide-with-retroarch/

Hi, I tried to add themes to my RG28XX, but when I put them in the themes folder, I select them and they look weird and cut off. I also read that you can put them in the archive folder, and install them from there, but when I do that they don't appear in the themes picker. Could it be that it's incompatible with my console? Thanks.
Hello, good morning, I have a couple of questions, can you play nds? With this OS, platforms such as n64, dreamcast, psp are optimized? With this OS, are the same filters applied as well as the Gba logo in the games? Do they serve functions like WiFi and Bluetooth? Thanks, I'm using the translator so my English won't be perfect

Is there a reliable way to flash the image file onto the sd on android? I keep trying to flash it, but it keeps getting stuck on the splashscreen boot up

Thanks man I’ll try that when I get home. The card is all set and working just fine. Been using my system just fine too but not sure why skraper isn’t working, would it be the stock OS?

Dreamcast core or other advice? I'm not having any luck running Dreamcast games? Does anyone have a recommendation of which of the five Dreamcast cores works best for most games? Thanks for the video! Cheers.
Flycast VL would probably be best. If they're not working, make sure you're using the right bios.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks!
I would appreciate your help. I got to the part where the theme is set and I downloaded the ART BOOK zip file, but when I get to the device and select it, the display on the device goes crazy and turns into strange colors and not like yours. How can I solve this? ?
Thanks.
I would join the muOS Discord and try troubleshooting there, that's unfortunately out of my knowledge.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds oh now it’s working I’m so happy thx for your guide I love it🙏🏻
@@Maor595 How did you fix it?? I am getting the same error.
So I’m trying to add box art from Skraper on my XX SP I just got. After I select the ROMs location on my stick and hit next twice it just closes out. Any ideals?
Hm, no, sounds like something is broken with the program. Try a reinstall of Skraper?
Thanks man I’ll try that when I get home. The card is all set and working just fine. Been using my system just fine too but not sure why skraper isn’t working, would it be the stock OS?
what if after I do the Rufus part the device dont turn on? I followed the steps correctly im using a onn. A2 micro sd 128gb my device is the RG 35XX
35XX Plus or 2024? If you have the original 35XX, this doesn't work for that.
Hi,
Can't seem to fetch the box art, it's like the script is no longer useable?
Just did it yesterday, so I would double check your steps.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks, got it working.
I had to download the raw script and not just right click save it.. oops
Can this MuOS run N64? I keep hearing a rumor that it can now. Something about 'refried beans'
MuOS runs some N64 yes, just like stock.
@JoeysRetroHandhelds well good I'll try installing that instead of Batocera. I've tried them all but not the latest of MuOS. Just want to play some Zelda. mupenrice plays it perfect.
Dual Card setup supported?
It is, but annoying for box art.
