Amazing viddy! Being able to bring my curated rom sets and game lists with all my personal metadata and favourites list is what keeps me on Knulli, even though I'd much prefer the portmaster compatibility on MuOS.
I have tried both and have to say while knulli is very aesthetically pleasing, it still has many bugs that need squashing. For now I’m running with MuOS on both the XXH and SP
@@BornIntoThis20 I ran into a couple issues with the front end not launching games/libraries for seemingly no reason, Knulli overwriting RetroArch settings even after updating override files, and generally speaking MuOS does seem to be more light weight so games run slightly better in most cases
Love your video BUT have to disagree with your assessment. MuOS is far beyond more developed than Knulli. Too many bugs, more than half of the PSP library does not play or crashes at title screen for example GOW:COO. N64 is terrible on Knulli even with the remapping of controls. The public release version of Knulli needs alot of work and if you do not know how to tinker with settings, then this would not be for you. I personally love MuOS and will be sticking with it until I see the improvements on Knulli. I do love what the devs are doing with Knulli but it's not there yet unless you want to donate and get the the alpha releases of this front which I hear run much better than the public release.
Was very hyped with knulli, but will wait a bit, even the batocera beta version is much more stable, with knulli some Naomi/Dreamcast games crashed, also but worst performance on some games, not to mention had to use a second SD card since it's a pain to copy roms :/ I know it is because of postmaster but it really annoyed the hell out of me, even using network the damn thing doesn't correctly sets the share partition or at least didnt for me so trying to copy roms i was only able to store them on the small partition..
7:28 This little few seconds of information was huge for me, thank you. N64 runs great on Knulli w/ Mupen64 Rice core on the SP, but I didn't understand the control layout .. now I know what file to edit, spent a few minutes changing it in notepad to your layout (triggers for C L+R, X A for C U+D), and now comfortably know all the controls when playing. Played DK64 for a few hours w this and now I really enjoy N64 on the SP
I used both for some time and I have to say muOS is my choice. It's fast, I can name my roms folders whatever I want and I can config Retroarch the way I need. The only thing keeping muOS from beeing perfect is the lack of bluetooth. But soon...
The only advantage of Stock over MuOS right now is Retroachievements on stock has images. Every other feature between the two is in a state of parity imo.
Anbernic official OS is the better one of the 3x you can now even update it with 64 bit version and you can play many PORT games like CELESTE, Turtles SHredder Revenve, GTA 3 etc. Automatic Save when you close it, Power Buttong Switch from Dpad to Analogue Stick, easy switch to choose to many cores to play games and super many extra emultors compatible... sorry but in this case I would never update the XX series with CFW
So, seems my research was wrong. Apparently muOS doesn't support Bluetooth yet and while I was able to connect my AirPods to Knulli, I couldn't get any sound out of them. :-/
I have the H model and I love muos, it boots way faster and the new sleep mode is amazing. But the lack of bluetooth audio makes me go back to bato40 and knulli
nice comparison, considering these now as im currently using modded stock os, which is decent. but, most people will simply put the sd card into a reader and transfer roms directly. simple and faster.
I've installed muos banana, but once I boot a game my controls stop working. Can't start or exit games dpad doesn't function, nothing. unless I press Reset and get back to muos main screen. Any advice on what could be happening?
Ya know, those hinges are kind of cool. I was in my strong 2ds position for the longest time, but maybe hinges are helpful. Something to chew on. Good video!
Amazing video. This is the only video online that I’ve seen that actually shows somewhat how to install this OS via Mac OS. Is it possible that you can please do a more detailed video on installing Knulli on the SP via Mac OS?? Most tutorials online are always always Windows based.
Ive read that knulli added hinge support? You lnow if this is true? Just got my SP today, flashed muOS on an SD to toy around, but im so used to Emulationstation from my R36S that i might go flash knulli.
I gotta give the nod KNULLI because muOS simply hasn't released a firmware version for my RG40XX-H. In all fairness, Anbernic has released a ton of new consoles with varying chipsets. MuOS might just be checking for compatibility for all these new models. KNULLI is here and it is an absolute blast. Fun UI, wireless data transfer, scraping is easy and it has a 'Check for missing bios" option that comes in handy. The only downside is certain Portmaster games might not work. KNULLI all the way.
Does Knulli let you install Portmaster directly from the unit? If so, why doesn't Portmaster block games that won't work on it? What ports have you tried that didn't work?
With Knulli (maybe this is Emulationstation's problem) I just had so many issues with default configurations. Especially the cores and latency settings. Games running very poorly, having poorly mapped controls, weird default hot keys and shortcuts, and had a lot of issues getting bezels and overlays to look good and work properly. The frontend is nice and the built in scraper (With videos) is amazing! But the actual core and game performance out of the box was just too poor and required too much configuring and tweaking. There were some GBA games I could not get running well no matter how much i tweaked it. Games that run flawlessly with no configuration changes on muOS. muOS lacks some creature comforts in the OS UI but default setting and performance for every game was amazing, and the default built in bezels and overlays reflecting the console you are playing were flawless too. I am still a little new to all this, so forgive me if I am off base. muOS required a little more effort to get things set up and started, but required almost 0 configuration for cores/latency/audio and controls. Actual gameplay was amazing compared to knulli. Maybe I am dumb and missed something.
Knulli has "ok" Port Master support. It's better than stock, but some games won't even work for me, like Shadow Warrior, even though I have the proper grp and rts files in the folder. If you love media, stock is the best choice if you like music and videos, as those have fast forward and rewind functions. Knulli has better EBook support as you can read comics, pdf files, etc. Stock only lets you read txt files and that's it.
Hey Coulter, thank you for this comprehensive comparison. Before installing a CFW, do either of these two have any drawbacks compared to the stock FW? For example it seems hinge support only got recently supported. Are there any other important features we will miss out on when switching firmware?
Awesome video and very helpful, I'm new to all this and have just purchased the H version with a 64gb card with games on, if I want to transfer everything over on that card to a 128gb so I can use the 64 for operation system only, is it a case of copy and paste everything over? Thank you 👍 and I'm now a new subscriber 👍
Thanks so much for subscribing! And I would recommend checking the documentation for your firmware of choice, as both Knulli and muOS have quite friendly websites now. Off the top of my head copy/pasting your roms to the big card will play out of the box with muOS, but for Knulli I believe you have to do that file movement over the network (as mentioned in the video). Have a great day!
Haha I'm still on the fence but I'll probably keep rocking muOS since I've got more experience with that OS, but I very well may jump around since both are great!
Tested Knulli today and some things are odd. Some Bios files need to be in subfolders. I used the exFAT option (one card) and everytime i put the sd-card into my card reader the Drive Letter for the SHARE Partition is gone, so i give it one with Mini Partition Wizard but the dead drive letters stack up everytime you insert the card again. That's horrible. Some Ports like the Raze Engine crash frequently. I went back to muOS after tinkering with Knulli. And who came up with Function+Start to quit a game? I can't even change hotkeys in the menus. So many no-gos.
Sorry to post on here but I am having issues with Knulli and Portmaster. For some reason, none of the games (Celeste and Balatro) are not saving the saves. Have any idea on a fix? Thanks in advance!
You need to wait for each achievement picture to download to open the achievement screen. Otherwise there is a high chance of crashing RetroArch. Open the game, play a few minutes and then it will be safe to open the RA screen.
I’m a new owner to XX Plus with Knulli. I know they don’t play PSP and DC natively well but while I was doing some testing, L and R is non-existent on the PSP even with remapping, it didn’t say anything about that in their page either.
Have you tried remaping directly on knulli and then also remaping on emulator? There are some cores that have some wonky keybinds not sure if knulli uses PPSSPP stand alone as default or the retroarch core. Anyhow personally I skip using PSP games on that device since no matter what aspect ratio you use it looks terrible, also N64 I've given up on emulation lol, just such a pain to configure the controls.
@@morid0 I did but somehow it still didn't work. I had to reflash it and the mapping finally worked. Idm much about the weird aspect ratio, it's not like I can play lots of PSP games on it anyway, just enough for me to get Ridge Racer up and running and I'm gtg. Although I recently switched to muOS, not really liking the oversimplistic UI but Portmaster works very well. Tried Ports on Knulli and other that their Ready to Run games, probably because of me not wanting to overtinker stuff, I can't for the life of me get the games I wanted to work on there and I just gave up on Knulli entirely. Just give and take I guess.
Damn, I'd be keen for Knulli if it had the hinge support as it looks a lot more polished. ext4 formatting isn't a con for me as my daily driver pc is a linux machine running Pop! OS. I'll be keeping an eye out for future versions though.
Tried both… Muos is just better performance wise.. Knulli has an eye pleasing menu but it uses a lot of power and battery. Muos is lightweight and more efficient. You can also get themes for Muos just to get some decent looking home menus. My vote and personal OS choice is Muos.

Great video, thanks for this. I'm curious though, did you test game performance? I've heard that MuOS uses 'something something' 64 bit, IDK... and so N64 and Dreamcast performance is much better on both MuOS and the stock firmware. This would be worth 2 points in my opinion! ;)
ive used KNULLI for 3 days , it looks pretty but it has hardly any video format support , it plays PSP and dreamcast in slow motion, I've tried MUOS last week , I may give it another go
I got Stardew Valley to work on Knulli, but I understand why you couldn't. I had to find the solution on the Knulli Discord server. You will have to replace libGL.so.1 and libEGL.so.1 with different versions of the files that were provided there. I get giving MuOS the point on that one, though!
Knulli looks really good because is based on Batocera, but MUOS is way better in my opinion Once you get good at configuring it, loading art for your games, adding cheats, configuring the cores... MUOS offers much better performance I've been playing stable PSP on my RG35XX H, games like Gundam VS Gundam, FF Tactics run almost flawless
the creators of these custom firmwares know what works for emulation , but out of the box PSP and dreamcast don't work great on KNULLI , why cant they configure them before release , I don't want to piss about changing settings in retroarch
It’s a portable device. HDMI is not important. You’re not buying this as a home console. Bluetooth for what? The controls are integrated. If you’re using an external controller for this device, you really don’t have your priorities straight.
@@nalaseap We all use these differently. I have my use cases and I do dock it and play with my kids which is why BT support is necessary for my use case scenario. I am glad you don't seem to need it. But for those of us that do any CFW that can support it is appreciated.
@@MrTomemac BT support is coming to MuOS soon. HDMI support is probably going to be fixed soon too. Can't wait until knulli finally gets hinge support which should make for a more even ground to compare the two OS's
@@FS-zt6tm good to go for any cfw. Got 8 dedicated cards. 2 for stock, 2 for bato, 2 for MuOS and 2 for knulli. So far cause I play at home with the kids knulli is my go to. Bato became knulli so not using that one much either as knulli just works better.
Batocera has been working since March. I went to KNULLI for PortMaster support which is basically just a newer build of Batocera. Also Stardew Valley works fine in KNULLI.

so aesthetically/visually knulli is better but functionally muOS is better?
I just found MuOs to be more...stable and faster than Knulli.
ive used KNULLI for 3 days , it looks pretty but it has hardly any video format support , it plays PSP and dreamcast in slow motion, I've tried MUOS last week , I may give it another go
does muos better with psp?
I got Stardew Valley to work on Knulli, but I understand why you couldn't. I had to find the solution on the Knulli Discord server. You will have to replace libGL.so.1 and libEGL.so.1 with different versions of the files that were provided there. I get giving MuOS the point on that one, though!
Ahhh that's good to know thanks. I'm sure others in the comments will appreciate this
I was going to use knulli on my sp as I enjoy batocera on my steam deck but I went for muOS just to keep things simpler for the sp.
Knulli looks really good because is based on Batocera, but MUOS is way better in my opinion
Once you get good at configuring it, loading art for your games, adding cheats, configuring the cores... MUOS offers much better performance
I've been playing stable PSP on my RG35XX H, games like Gundam VS Gundam, FF Tactics run almost flawless
Just try Dreamcast with knulli against stock or muos...
the creators of these custom firmwares know what works for emulation , but out of the box PSP and dreamcast don't work great on KNULLI , why cant they configure them before release , I don't want to piss about changing settings in retroarch
i love knulli but it isn't friendly user though
Any firmware without emulation station themes is a deal breaker for me.
Damn that cnet prizefight was a throw back 😂 was also 9 watching those…so crazy to think 😂
Lol it was a time! 😂
I'm definitely Team muOS. Knulli just had way too many barriers to entry.
The original anbernic os is updated and everything works better.
MuOS still has wonky hdmi support and the Bluetooth is laughable. Knulli wins.
Stock has a serious power control error with the June update so not touching it atm. And Mu doesn’t let me play with the family. Bato became knulli so not using that one much either as knulli just works better.
tried both stuck with stock os lol
Oh dang it's ext4, guess I'm using knulli that was easy
Batocera has been working since March. I went to KNULLI for PortMaster support which is basically just a newer build of Batocera.
Also Stardew Valley works fine in KNULLI.
Dude how did you miss the boot times, it's most important on the go, 40 sec vs 10 on muos is the true deal breaker.
According to the devs MuOS is pronounced "moose" I kid u not
They told me that too - tried it... Didn't feel right 😅
should've made this video after knulli implements hinge support because it'll be an obvious deal breaker for many
My assumption is that it’s pronounced “Em-You”OS like emulation operating system.
it's actually short for mustard OS
@@FS-zt6tmwell, that makes sense… 🤔 I guess it goes with the Beans and refried beans theme.
stop promoting pirated OEM keys, just because you pay for the keys doesn't make them legitimate. I'm tired of seeing this sponsor. Just pirate the keys if you're gonna pirate them, don't pay someone else to pirate it for you!
Seconded. At least something like ManScaped is selling an actual product.
Modded stock os better than both
how you do it?
knulli for genZ, muos for millennials
Lol I don't know why this makes sense but it does
thank you because knulli is absolute junk
How do you figure? I use it and think it's great.
Spell the m and u, resulting in (e)m - u - o - s
