    Unfortunately, Yahoo and ESPN didn’t allow comments on Angel Hernandez’s retirement so I’ll have to say GOOD RIDDANCE right here. Not only was Hernandez a terrible umpire, but he further magnified his terrible calls with his “look at me” attitude. I saw him once at the Oakland Airport in California. He kept looking around, trying to make eye contact with people, waiting for someone to recognize him. No one did…except me.

    Angel Hernandez, is an example of what is wrong with Unions.

    • @nozrep
      @nozrep 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yes. a shining star of a beautiful, terrible example. Which is why I am now, in modern times, very thankful for “right to work” laws in my state. I freely choose to join a union if I want to. And I am not in any way banned from working from a company if I choose to not join a union. Because states ended up doing that in the era of the unions 50 years ago. There were actually states that made laws that said you had to join the union by law, or you couldn’t work for that company. And that of course was the moment unions had their break-over moment when many(not all) but many started going against the worker instead of advocating for the worker as they claimed. Therefore, “right to work” laws were passed. For very good reason.

    The bad apples are quitting before automated strikezone/challenges expose how awful they actually are. The replay system already embarrasses Angel, overturning multiple calls per inning at times.

    Angel Hernandez was a middle of the pack umpire, stat wise. He was not the best and he was not the worst. The raw stats prove that. What he was, was arrogant and unable to admit when he was wrong. The stats say that he should made a crew chief, but being a crew chief involves more than stats. It involves temperment, leadership, and humility. He has none of those qualities and it's why he lost his lawsuit against MLB.

    Not defending him at all but in many cases strikes should be called where the ball crosses the plate, not where it lands in the catcher's mitt. If you look at some of those calls, the ball crossed the plate in the strike zone over the plate but ended up out of the strike zone when it landed in the catcher's mitt. His ball and strike calling was obviously terrible, but some of the calls like the check swings or a missing a tag on a steal are easy to criticize with the hindsight of instant replay. I just hope they never move to automated balls and strikes. Baseball is a human game, umpires are a part of the game and always should be. Sometimes if a catcher does a great job at framing a pitch, he steals a strike. It's part of the game. If a pitcher is hot and in the zone, he gets that borderline strike on the corner, it's part of the game. Keep baseball human.

    • @chad1755
      @chad1755 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I want to watch athletes put on an athletic show, not an umpire clown show. We can't do that if calls aren't fair, consistent, and impartial, and umps have proven they can't be any of those things. So I'm 100% in favour of robots calling balls and strikes. Let the players play and get the blue power hungry clowns out of the way.

    • @peskytalk
      @peskytalk  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My bigger issues with umpires is their ridiculous ejections which ruins the game for the thousands and thousands of fans (especially children) that might only get to go to 1 or 2 games per year and miss their favorite player play because the umpire was mad he said his strike call was incorrect

    • @rayspooner1982
      @rayspooner1982 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @chad1755 I get your point but as a former catcher, part of the game is framing pitches. There are catchers who are terrible at it and catchers who are like magicians with it. Part of their job is to manipulate the umpires calls and with robot umps, that part of the game is gone forever. It's a small part of the game, but it's one that I really appreciate.

    • @chad1755
      @chad1755 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rayspooner1982 Yeah but framing pitches is a gaming of the system -- an abuse of the rules -- it only exists because officials suck at their job.
      Yes its a skill, but we should be seeking to close the loopholes.

    • @rayspooner1982
      @rayspooner1982 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @chad1755 I don't know. I guess I'm just a traditionalist. Once you make the game robotic, I think you lose what people really love about it. I like seeing managers go toe to toe yelling at umpires, it's a baseball tradition that's as old as peanuts and crackerjacks. Sometimes a bad call goes against your team and sometimes it goes your way. In the end it all evens out. Even though we all think it's our team that's always getting screwed. That manager arguing with the ump and getting tossed fires up the crowd and the players. Controversy is fun. It's all part of what baseball is.
