The tail lights on the bumper has to do with the regulations that say tail lights must be located on a non-movable surface in the rear. Therefore, on vehicles where the rear hatch (i.e. Audi Q5) is full width, they are legally required to put a second set of lights on the bumper so that the tail lights are still visible with the hatch open.
Jennifer, Keith and Mike, As a public service I feel I must remind you that every not-so-polite hockey GOON you have ever seen is also a card-carrying Canadian.
Good recommendation on the cars for 30k. But Mike, I like Subaru don't get me wrong, but the boxer Engines are know for head gasket issues and also excessive oil usage. Also to get the head gasket replaced in a Boxer engine is not as easy nor cheap as say a Rav 4 or CRV with a in line 4.
Yes, very nice vehicles, but at least the USA got the upgraded infotainment system for 2021 while Canada is stuck with the ancient technology, at least till 2022 MY. Not sure what the thinking was, other than dollars and cents, and whether it affects sales this year.
@@gareyris345 true, but what's also interesting is here in Canada the 2021 CX-5 was available with Wireless Apple Carplay even though it has the old Infotainment. In the USA that's not available.
adding to the dashcam question...even Merc Benz have started adding intergrated dashcam as an option. i see it in models like the new compact GLA and GLE suvs
Working from a sales consultant perspective: set an appointment with the dealership if you want to be waited on. If you just show up, depending on the reputation of the dealership, you will not cut ahead of someone that an employee has scheduled. Respect the time and date of that appointment. When a customer walks in, we don’t consider you just a “lead,” most people that visit a dealership want to buy/lease a car. A good sales contact can help the customer with research, so calling ahead always helps. We are all in this together and we will all get through this together
Regarding the high price of new pick-ups. My strategy is that I only shop holiday, end-of-model year specials to get the biggest discount. In mid-November I purchased a 2020 Ford F-150 XLT that stickered at $49K and cost me $39K out the door. I did shop around and Ford was putting out the biggest incentives to move 2020's as the new model 2021 F-150's were just beginning to ship. I did shop around and the other pickup manufacturers were more modest in their incentives.
Uh Oh Jennifer, you mentioned looking at excessive fender bender repair bills and you bought a truck with an aluminum bed. I already know several people who have caved their new beds in on their Fords and decided to leave it because the cost to repair was so high.
I have Progressive and I had the Snapshot, which you can now do on an app now. You can delete or change the category of some trips or pause it. You do have to drive a certain amount to get your final result to see if you will get a discount or not. I did fortunately, but yeah I was driving a little harder than I thought on some trips according to the snapshot.
Jennifer, congratulations on your new truck. Which engine did you choose for your new 2020 F-150 STX? Why did you decide to go with a 2020 and not the newly redesigned 2021?
My lease ends in Dec. and I typically do a lot of research in advance. Sometimes, I will test drive vehicles month in advance, so I know I’m not in a difficult position when my lease ends. The only thing is we’re in the middle of a pandemic and I feel it’s selfish to ask for a test drive several months in advanced when it means they’ll have to deep clean the car. I’m going to wait until the summer or fall when the vaccine will be more widespread and available then. I’m really excited to test drive the Mazda CX-30 Turbo and compare it to the CX-5. I’m also looking forward to the 2022 Hyundai Tucson N, Hybrid and PHEV.
Dash cams are such a controversial issue. Understand, a dash cam can implicate YOU. The defence “he cut me off” is actually no defence. Your insurance company can simply question “why didn’t you anticipate, use defensive driving and leave him space?” Another excuse to raise your rates.
If you watch some of the many dashcam compilation videos on here, you'll see a lot of cammers who do things like accelerate into someone who is coming into their lane and things like that. I'm an adjuster, and I've had people send me dashcam video that they thought would exonerate them, when in fact, the video made it abundantly clear that they were the at-fault driver. I can understand why insurance companies would be hesitant to offer a dashcam discount until they can get real data demonstrating that vehicles with dashcams have fewer at-fault accidents than vehicles without.
I don't think I could count the number of test drives I went on last time I was shopping -- and that was at least a two-year process for me -- and I was NEVER asked for name, phone number, or proof of insurance. Usually, they just wanted a copy of my license, or they might have held on to it for the duration of the drive. One salesman just handed me the keys one day and told me to try it out without him! I think he was the manager, actually, and he was short-staffed that day. But admittedly, the last time I did a test drive was at least three years ago, and that was at the dealer in the small town we'd been in for a few years by that point, so they might have been a little more lax with us.
I agree with Mike Quinn. The Subaru Legacy is a great car for kids. We have a 2013 my wife is driving, now with 107,000 miles on it and still no problems. The twins are 14. So in two years when the car is 9 years old they can learn to drive on that car, with the older Eyesight system to help prevent accidents always on when the car has about 130,000 miles on it. It will be good for them to drive over the next 2.5 years before going to college and it will have depreciated to the point to be worth $5000 so it won't be a super expensive car to drive in any case. You don't need the 2020 shown here - just find a 6 or 7 year old Legacy with Eyesight and you should be set.
Thanks! This is good stuff. We are leaning toward the Subarus. One big plus with the eyesight is a fender bender will not hurt it, thus will cost less to repair it. (Of course if you need a new windshield you need to pay more to get the calibration done, but the fender benders are more likely).
The US has laws regarding lights, so some design choices come from that. Rear lights have to be non-moving, so that dictates design choices. Europe has different laws, so european models are different.
Customer: when I got to the dealership I feel like they wasted my time..it was a bad experience Salesman: that Customer was a waste of time.....they were a Bad lead Consumer reports: go out there and waste time...
Julian & Jennifer: I’d be curious too! I sent in the question...my wife is very anti-tech...She still uses a paper calendar to keep track of meetings!! And no, we’re not both engineers...I’m in the military and she’s an actress working in the arts.
I guess you like to encourage the give mentality of the younger Generations. In the 90's when I started driving I would have never asked or even considered have my parents to buy me a car, car insurance, or even pay for college. In fact I even put some of my money towards the home experiences.
Not sure what that means? Our son never asked for the car...plus, he uses it to drive to practice every day and volunteers to help young hockey goalies develop...and prior to COVID, to assisted living centers to entertain them with his sax playing...and school where he gets straight As...I’m all about kids working for what they get, but if parents can afford it, I feel parents have an obligation to put their kids in the safest environment possible. No one would ever consider leaving their child with a sub-par babysitter, or be in any unsafe situation if you could help it. Cars should be no different.
Why are cars/trucks so expensive now: inflation, features, and capabilities. 40k is the new $25k and I guarantee a $40k truck is way better than a 25k truck from the 90s or 15k truck from the 80s.
How can you be anonymous when you each purchase several cars a year and appear on TV? To some dealers, you are not a "lead," you are a "mooch" who is out to fleece them so their only defense, so their managers tell them, is to fleece you.
"good car for a teen driver under $30K?" How about a used Toyota 4Runner with Rock sliders + steel front and rear bumpers so you are not worried about dents. Also It's slow so you are not worried about they driving fast.. LoL..

Correct. Same regulation in Europe.

"Don't overtruck yourself", that should go on a t-shirt.
Dealerships should feel super lucky when anyone wants a test drive. Don't worry about hurting their feelings
Why are pick ups so expensive? Because people are stupid enough to take 84 month loans.
Very generous tax write offs also encourage overindulgence in this area.
Another great episode! I too like Jen's take on most everything!

not to mention the CVT Transmission.
Awesome show today! Loved the format. And I can't recommend Jen's pick of the CX-5 enough.

Wow is Jens house haunted by the CR ghost? I saw the door open up by it's self.
Uhhhh. That was def creepy.
I noticed that too. Wondered if a dog or cat entered the room.
Awesome show. Please keep this trio of presenters coming. Very entertaining and informative
To each his own, but the only way my kids would get a $30K vehicle it’d be because I’m six feet under...

From my experience, car dealers more often than not lack ettiquette. They should welcome you!
You’re not going to the right dealerships. Research the reputation of the dealership. Ask to be introduced to a sales manager if your uncomfortable,
Mercedes Benz is offering a front dash cam as a $200 option on the 2021 GLC 300
this is a great episode! no offense to other hosts but I alway watch when Jennifer and Keith are hosting.

What does QR think about car size for teenage drivers? Our HS parking lot is filled with trucks and large SUVs with a lot of dings & scrapes.
Is there such a thing as a lightly-used late model used pickup truck? Or are they prohibitively priced, as well?
Creepy video. Watch at 20:10 mark as Jennifer speaks the glass door mysteriously opens by itself. House must be haunted.

I love it how you praise Honda CS, in my experience, they don’t really care about their customers, this is for Keith!

Nobody mentioned the Apple IIc on Keith’s desk in the past six days??? So retro.

Sometimes it's because they have a harsher than expected ride, from what I've heard.
Here is a comment for Alex. As a customer you are the boss the dealer is there to server you not the other way around.

Dashcam DOES save you on ins when you are in a not-at-fault accident with the other driver trying to blame you.
Volvo 850 💯❤️
Luckily my family let me chose the car I wanted when I was 17.
Dang, Honda still hasn't figured out how to rust proof their cars? They were ticking time bomb rust buckets back in the 60's and 70's.

And good riddance Emily is the worst host. She is even worse that some how don't even bother to show up.
