    If the car manufacturers have known issues, no matter the service designation, should be paid for by the manufacturer. CR should work on either putting pressure on the manufacturers to have a single repair designation covered fully and/or lobby for legislation. Arteon over a Stinger? This is hilarious, because that Arteon has cheap materials and check out their awful reliability reviews.

    I had the garage size issue in the 1970's also. I wanted a '73 Impala wagon in the worst way. On the test drive, I took it home to see if it would fit. It wouldn't! Boy was the salesman mad!! I ended up buying a '73 Gran Torino wagon. Still long, but not quite as long as the Impala. Even buying the Torino forced me to nose the front bumper between two studs in the rear garage wall so it would fit. It was a chore to close the overhead door (manual rope, no power) as there was less than two inches between the overhead door and the rear bumper.

    I had one of the first 1982 Mitsubishi Cordias, when they first started selling their own cars apart from Chrysler.
    It wasn't bad, I had no trouble with it in 25,000 miles, but then the MR2 came out, and I had to have one of those. I stuck with them until 2000.

    This is why length, width, and height of vehicles are readily available, yikes!!! I needed a tow vehicle which in my case meant full size crew cab pickup or full size SUV. My garage is 232" deep and the F150 is 231.9" and a Ram was I think another inch longer! I likely would have needed to make modifications and that was part of my purchase decision. THIS IS NOT THE MANUFACTURER'S FAULT OR PROBLEM.

    My 2014 Prius has always been this way. Guage reading empty, low-fuel alert going off, range-to-empty shows zero miles, and I fill it up with a whole nine gallons and a bit despite having an 11.9 gallon tank. It's full, as I have ignored the instruments and driven another 100 miles past the 'zero range' point.

    Thank you for your discussion about TSBs, Recalls, etc. It prompted me to check TSBs for my car again. I see that a problem that I spent about $2,000 repairing last year was covered under a warranty extended by the manufacturer. I'm hoping to get at least a partial refund for that expense.

    It would be good to clarify which dimension is limiting with that unfortunate friend's garage. My house was built in '66 with a single door 2-car garage. It has a good amount of length and width (no center post) but the height is on the low side. We have an '11 Odyssey without a roof rack, and it comes pretty close to the bottom edge of the open door. I wouldn't be surprised if a new Suburban or similar would hit on the top, though I haven't measured.

    Apparently the person who was asking about Mitsubishi hasn't driven one or spoken to someone who owns one... they're honestly, objectively, and intentionally a low-budget manufacturer. People aren't unjustly critical of Mitsubishi's lineup, but the fact remains that they are looser with credit and can get you in something with a new car warranty and probably a better interest rate than something used - that's what they compete with.

Great bargains and our good credit qualified for 1% financing for 72 months. Super warranty too. Sure, they are more basic and plain, but we’ve saved tons of money over the “name” brands. PS made in Japan! I recommend them. Dealers will wheel and deal too!

    As to the great question of leaving a car with a dealer-Some states such as Colorado have lemon laws that require the manufacturer to buy back a vehicle if the owner cannot receive it back in a timely manner (30 days in Colorado).

    Question 6 has been on my mind too, especially with not only larger vehicles but the aging population. My 80 year old in-laws moved nearby into a retirement community and they have a condo with attached garage which is so narrow, their Subaru Forester only fits with about a foot on each side max and they've already damaged the car hitting the garage. Retirement communities should have wider garages!! I fondly remember my grand-dad had a Ford Taurus and very narrow garage in his retirement community and the entire row had damaged garages!!

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cash tests maybe aren't too perfect, but they don't cover some of the more common things that can come up, at least I Feel. Such as a crash at 55-60 MPH. It seems that most of the crash tests done by NHSTA and IIHS are around 30 MPH, and maybe there's some data to show that the majority of crashes happen at those speeds, but I think we also need to include crashes at higher speeds, and more variants of crashes, like rear-ending, and more imporantly, they need to start testing and certifying the bars on the back of semis as some videos show that a poorly made protection bar on the back of a semi, will in some cases ,decapitate the people in the car and sheer off the roof. That's another test (for trucks) that they should do as well. Yes I think some of the tests are too "perfect" but at the same time, you can't test every possible scenario.

    As far as gas topping off goes, I have always assumed that mfrs set the Low Fuel lamp to go on well before empty. It annoys me. But I never thought the tank was short. To see exactly how much reserve you have at Low Fuel you have to run it down to empty - and carry a gas can ( on a road easy to pull off). Not sure what happens to new cars when empty happens though. Surely it can still be steered and braked with effort.

    • @labornurse
      @labornurse 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not recommended to run a car to empty. It can clog up your fuel filter.

  • @ronkemperful
    @ronkemperful 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kate’s problem with not being able to fill the RAV4 isn’t unique to that vehicle. I was hugely frustrated with my 2009 Prius which showed ‘empty’ and yet I was able only to put 4 to 5 gallons into the tank! Oddly enough if I let the gas go in at a slow drip, and topped it off about 5 times, I could get another 2 gallons into the tank (topping is a no no).

    My Answer to Q4:
    Mitsubishi ain't popular anywhere, the market share in Japan is less than two percent.
    They were doing not too horribly in South Asian market thanks to the Mirage (AKA the cheapest Japanese branded car), but their operating profit dropped almost 90% this year, which is as bad as it sounds.

    Until someone dies, Toyota doesn't care. I ended up to trade back my 2009 Tacoma because of the same attitude in 2012 by Toyota. I was at the dealership at least 2 times a week. Lemon claim didn't fly. No more Toyota after that. I'm much more happy with my US 🇺🇸 brand cars and trucks just because of their caring customer service.

      CAFE standards are pretty strict. CVTs are very fuel efficient, but if we keep having to make new ones the energy savings are lost.

    • @josephkenny77
      @josephkenny77 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CVT's are cheaper, lighter, better fuel economy, and better acceleration. But less durability. A lot of the durability question depends on who is driving. I am a 63 year old male driving a 2008 Nissan Altima with a CVT approaching 200,000 miles, with no service. Transmission performs flawlessly.

    • @NoName-gv6nm
      @NoName-gv6nm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The CVT failure rate is a bit overblown. There are millions upon millions of them on the road. 99.9% do just fine. Several thousand failures will explode the internet pretty quickly.
      Plus it's very likely technicians are misdiagnosing problems as CVT problems. Lots of things can make the car feel like a CVT issue when it's a fuel delivery issue or intake issue. People see the RPM gauge go crazy, and just assume CVT failure and ditch the car cuz they're scared.

    • @NoName-gv6nm

    • @fordhouse8b
      @fordhouse8b 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t understand why the Congress just doesn’t simply extract whatever money is needed to conduct all tests directly from the manufacturers. If a manufacturer wants to sell a vehicle in the US, the government should go ahead and fully test it, and simply bill the maker for he costs off doing so. If they don’t pay that bill, they should be barred from selling any vehicles at all.

    • @holmiumh

      @@fordhouse8b
      You don't understand because you are an idiot who thinks the US is the only country in the whole damn world and all government bureaucrats are as clean as a whistle.
      If Toyota can do the test for $1 to get all the data needed to sell Corolla in 150 countries it will at least take $5000 if all government bureaucrats from 150 countries want to conduct their own in-house tests and God knows how much money is wasted for bribing the corrupted officials (they can fail a passable car if Toyota didn't put money in the right place you know)
      It's the customers' money at the end of the day and I don't think the customers are stupid enough to pay for all the bureaucracy BS.
