2022 Honda Civic; Which Cars of Today Will Be Future Classics? | Talking Cars

  • On this week's episode, we talk about the redesigned 2022 Honda Civic, and share our first impressions on its driving characteristics, styling, and comfort. Ford has announced an all-new small pickup, the Maverick, and we discuss how it might fit into a market dominated by oversized vehicles. We also give a glimpse into our headlight testing at the track, and how halogen lights compare to LEDs. Other topics include why a truck's hood height can pose a risk to pedestrians and drivers of smaller cars; proper oil change intervals for short commutes; whether a new car that sat on a dealer's lot for months may have a risk of 'lot rot;' if turning off the A/C in a car saves gas; and our experts predict which modern cars will become classics in the future.

I witnessed a short elderly woman being killed in a crosswalk when a tall pickup truck turned right and didn't see her over his fender. It was horrific. There should be new laws for mirrors or cameras in these trucks to view blocked areas. The scale of new and lifted trucks is no longer compatible with the size of pedestrians with whom they share streets.

I also witnessed an accident while driving in a two way winding country road at night. A lifted fullsize truck came from the bend and blinded the car in front of me when the old man in the car thought the truck has his hi beams on . He signalled to him via hi beams but the idiot blasted him back with a hi beam and fog lights.. the old man died when he went off road and crashed. When they lift their trucks, idiots dont account that their head lights are way up too

VW completely missed the boat on the vanlife/camping craze. They floated the Microbus concept for years and Canoo has come along and done a better version of it.

CR, If you are going to give kudos to Ford for making a 40 mpg 'pickup' then you need to look critically at Honda for launching a new Civic that averages less than that. With several compact commuter car alternatives already exceeding 50 mpg, a brand new 2022 model in the high 30s is simply not good enough. 50 mpg has to be the new benchmark in this class.

I'm old enough to remember people calling a drill you plugged in an electric drill. Yes there were several types of drills that you cranked by hand when I was a child. My grandfather had the old fashion one with the knob on top and kind of a U shape handle on it's side between the top knob and bit that you cranked, then there was the type that had a crank like the old egg beaters, which people who owned ones that you plugged in called them an electric beater. Now the ones which run on a rechargeable battery are called cordless, and someday someone will say why do we call them cordless.

I had an '09 Sonata Limited that I bought in April. Only later did I see that it had been made in April of '08. And I knew it had been transferred from South Florida. A friend in the car business said if it was from Florida, it had paint protectant on it, although they didn't charge me for it.
So I monitored the car closely, and it never gave me any trouble. The tires lasted 45,000 miles, the brakes 100,000, and the paint was fine. I still miss that car!

Am I the only one that doesn't like how large cara have gotten? I think we are going to have a lot of regretful people with their larger cars. As fuel prices go up. Amazing how quickly people forget how quickly prices can go up. Like they have since around Nov. 2020. Pretty sad Honda basically has no car the size of my 2005 civic. Since they keep making things bigger and bigger. Basically making the MPG stagnate.

Great video. And why, oh why are pick up truck headlights brighter coming at you than any car on the road? It is very disturbing and a hazard imo. I believe it’s because they are a tad higher and their alignment is higher and the beam is more in-line to the oncoming car driver. I believe the NHTA. needs to investigate this.

For the car sitting on lot question, I thought car rotors rust within days? Surface rust on rotors aren't an issue I thought. Also, what about a car that has been on the lot for 2 or 3 years. I had been considering a mazda cx-5 diesel awhile ago that was on the lot for 2-3 years. I offered about 5k below their cost (carcostcanada) and they declined, I didn't counter offer. Would such a car be a bad idea mechanical wise? It had about 2000 miles on it and I was a bit worried about diesel components sitting and not in use.

  • @sjwang40

I think it would be hard for electric cars to be truly classic. The batteries will eventually degrade and unless the manufacturer is selling new replacement batteries decades down the road, they will turn to junk. Also I’m not sure how easy it’ll be to work on an old electric car. Maybe I’m just old, but I can’t see myself wrenching on an old Tesla in my garage because I’d be afraid of getting zapped

    • @Chasmodius
      @Chasmodius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Why wouldn't you disconnect the battery before "wrenching?" I think it does that automatically anyway.
Look at the enthusiast/DIY electrical engineer groups online -- getting better batteries for older EVs likely won't be a problem once they become desirable "classics."

Battery cells are battery cells. We're still in the infancy of this push. It would be silly to assume aftermarket or DIY projects couldn't build replacement packs using cells of a different chemistry and/or form factor.

In the words of James may.
“Rare, Interesting, and Beautiful those are the ways to judge what could be a classic car. And a true classic must atleast be 2 of those 3” I couldn’t agree more. If I were to put money into a future classic that isn’t a super car I would make sure that car has a cult following already and atleast 2 of the 3. That’s Italian car makers are so good at making classics or the 90s and early 2000’s in Japan. That’s the way to go.

Hi Jenn, Keith, and Quince, GOOD SHOW!!! Some comments : 1) JENN!! YOU'VE HARDLY CHANGED IN TWENTY YEARS!! ( were you a child bride?? did you need Mommy and Dad's permission?? ) 2) I am Very Impressed with the Maverick!! I think my wife will love it, because she used to own an original "small" Ranger; she drives a Forester now, and the Maverick is 17" longer (all in the rear) , 1" wider, and the same height. The negatives I've seen in the videos are a) the center A/C vents are too low and will freeze your right hand in summer when it's holding the steering wheel b) no rear passenger A/C vents c) no turn signal repeaters in the mirrors ( a safety issue??) d) the storage hole next to the central display screen makes the screen look smaller and cheaper!!! I'm hoping Ford will fix some of these things before they begin production. Anyway, THANK YOU, CHAS ORVIS, PLAINVILLE, CT.

2:00 Why are we passing legal legislation for automated driving but we give absolutely NO legal authority for the super LEDs and laser lights that Europe has which has been clearly shown to be a safety upgrade? It would solve the "Why are headlights so bright" The lights are continuously adjusting to keep out of the eyes of other cars coming and going.

19:54 so I'm going to stick to the top gear rules for this one. meaning a car has to have two of the three following characteristics to be a classic "rare, interesting, and/or beautiful" So the current Tesla Model X for example wouldn't fit that bill because while it is interesting, it's not rare and it's definitely not beautiful.
So, right now this is really kind of hard to judge, because lots of volume cars right now just not interesting or beautiful. The closest things that come to mind are the Mini Cooper SE (not many made, it's got the looks, and as the first Mini EV it's definitely interesting), there's also the Honad-e (while not sold here, it fits all three categories well). Most Mazda's will probably fit this category in some way (there's not a lot of them around, they all look good, and every one of them has some interesting twist on the segment)
depending upon how much you want to stretch the term "every day car" all of alfa could fit in here. the 4C fits all three to an almost comical degree. while the Julia definitely fits two.

In 30 years can an EV be a barn find? Will it still run or can it be made to run? Now we can find old ICE parts, but in the future a car will be only some suspension parts and only a few of the interior parts. Nobody will remake the electronics these need to run but I can get '65 GTO back on the road.

An EV really doesn't care about battery specifics. The AC motor sure doesn't discriminate where the electricity originates from. Group the right number of battery cells to achieve the right voltage and amperage .... and voila, you're 95% operational. Aftermarket BMS and battery cells/modules are on the way, why wouldn't they be?

The comment about calling electric cars as such. You guys have missed the root of the question. Yes, they are electric, but why constantly refer to them as "electric" when you don't refer to other electric appliances AS electric.

Hondas are highly overrated and grossly overpriced. " negotiating" with a honda dealer is like trying to strike a hostage deal with iran, north korea, russia, or china except that you are the hostage. even in its home market of Japan, Toyota, Mazda, and even Nissan are considered to be much more desirable cars.
but, here in the states, there are plenty of cult sheeple.

I had a 2003 S-10 pickup, basic work truck with economical 4-cyl, manual trans, 2-door, 6 ft bed, vinyl floor and seats, AC, PS, PB, and a radio. Years ago the Ford made a Ranger that was equivalent to it. Nobody makes anything like it today, and nothing on the horizon. Even the new Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz are only available with a crew cab and a much shorter bed, making the bed almost useless. The starting prices are supposed to be $21k, but I would be very surprised to find a Maverick on a dealer's lot with an MSRP less than $30k. SMFH.

I don't think that the discussion of classic cars was on point. Classic cars are cars people wanted when they couldn't afford them - whether they were really good looking or especially fast, etc. Or had a cult following.

Please stop calling the Mach E a Mustang. Ford has such a rich library of retired names is a shame Ford could not of used a more appropriate and imaginative Name!
Building an SUV, electric or not, and slapping the mustang nameplate and superficial styling cues on it is quite unimaginative.
The new F150 Lightning is an appropriate use of the nameplate. It’s still an F150 but the sub model name is now more appropriate if anything!
Carol Shelby once said in various ways, the name doesn’t make the car! The car makes the name a legend.
They could’ve called it a galaxy. If it’s good, it will be a winner the a galaxy name will soar.
If it’s a loser no name will save it! Including mustang.
I wish Ford had listened to Carroll Shelby this time around!

Today's cars going to be a classic decades from now? Seriously? You're kidding, right? That has the same answer as the question which of today's music is going to be a classic 50 years from now? None! And you say a future classic car has to be built in limited numbers? So, was a 57 Chevy, the ultimate classic car at most car cruise shows today, built in limited numbers? Of course not. And my dad had a Chevy SS you mentioned and I was very disappointed when I drove it. It's Corvette engine was detuned, and with the car's behemoth weight and large turning radius due to wide tires, it wasn't a muscle car compared to any of the 60's muscle cars, and it wasn't responsive in corners.

No one era in time has a monopoly on what can be "classic"; it's a relative term . There will absolutely be many things including music and automobiles which will be considered "classic" in 50 years.
