Both cameras are very good for different tasks. I have BMMCC because I planned to use it specifically for complex staged filming. And the decisive factor was the presence of the RAW 3.1 format. Although when I travel I want to have OG in my pocket. Thanks for video :)
That all makes sense! Thank for watching :)
No way, you finally did it! So excited I’m commenting before even watching haha
Hahaha, you bet! And thanks :)
Good to see a video that finally compares the two in depth.
Have both, love em both. But I mostly use the BMMCC for slo-mo. Everything else, the BMPCC is just too handy to pick up and go. And I agree with the slightly more filmic image quality. Hard to put you finger on, it's just something with the movement and it's maybe a tad softer than the BMMCC, resulting in a slightly more nostalgic image.
Great observations 👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks for watching :)
I have two BMPCC OGs and a BMMCC - so I have the best of both worlds. I end up using the BMPCC OGs more than the BMMCC and even my BMPCC 4K - just a handy little cinema camera to have.
Very handy for sure. Thanks for watching!
What is it about to OG that makes you use it more than your 4K? The size? Image? Both?
@@joshuahartwell9224 size without sacrificing image quality.
I bought two of the og pockets back in the day. One died right after I used it only once and they cost 1,000 bucks each.
THOROUGHLY enjoyed this. BM should have hired you years ago. Your thoughts on 1080p with these gorgeous cameras are spot on. I happen to own both and love them and totally agree with so much of your insight. Fabulous production and footage.
Hahah, thank you very much :)
Great comparison, and fair points. I was thinking of selling my BMPCC, as I don't use it much anymore, but seeing this has me reconsidering. It just has such a sweet look!
Thanks for watching! Definitely hang on to it ;)
This is Excellent, thanks for making this comparison, Will, my Brother!
Thanks man!
Great job Will! Thanks for sharing. 🔥
A fair and informative comparison. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
100% agreed! Glad to see you here, since I was just at your awesome channel as well, hehe. Cheers, Brothers.
Hey, Will… I still plan on getting one of your cages… Just saving so I can get everything in one pop, to save on shipping. Love what you do! thank you!
Hey! Thanks man, that means a lot. And thanks for watching!
Hi ! love the video, have you tried the BMMCC 4K ? Looking to see how it compare between those. Cheers !
Thank-you for this comparison! Have you found a SD card which can sustain RAW 3:1 @60p on the BMMCC or did you capture ProRes @60p via HDMI?
Thank you! The green Kingston cards shown in the video (and linked in the description) handle the 3:1 60p without a problem. I honestly never shoot ProRes, lol.
I always wanted the OG pocket when it launched but it was always too expensive for me as a teen. But now I’d love to try it out some day.
Grab one while you can ;)
Hey Lucas, if you look around the Net often, and are patient, you can find one for $500 to $600 USD, sometimes for even less. Good luck!
Great comparison. No bullshit. Just facts and awesome insight. Thanks for this! Great job.
Haha, thanks! I appreciate it :)
Is this a 8-64 that i see?!!? 😍 @ 6:39
I've 3 og and looking for a micro if a good deal pop up 🤞 totally in love with the OG's and with your cage. Thanks for protecting theses legacies camera 🙏 and for all the videos about !
It is! Good eye ;) Thanks for your support :)
Maybe I just had a "lemon", but I had constant issues with the Micro I had, and the fixed noise pattern was horrible even in daylight setups. But with the 3 OG Pocket's I've had, it has been mostly smooth sailing once you do a bit of research into overcoming the camera's shortcomings. The image quality has been the highlight by far. For me OG produces a filmic image more easily than any other camera. Also, piling hours of RAW footage onto a $20 memory card is awesome.
Thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear you got a lemon but glad the OG has been a hit for you. It really is one of my favorites :)
Now imagine if they released an updated Micro camera (and just like Blackmagic build it bigger but still call it micro), Super 35mm sensor, internal Braw with a V mount battery plate, Sdi, Timecode and HDMI out with a full sized XLR handle adapter, 120fps for slow motion and internal Nds essentially making a proper box camera similar to say a Red Komodo but pricing it like the 6K Pro
Or... hear me out... You get a Z-Cam E2-F6 Pro.
Those Kingston SD cards work for shooting in CDNG? This was a fun comparison and I loved your footage of Taipei!
Yessir, they work great. I would say they are the “go to” cards for current BMPCC/Mirco users. Thanks and thanks for watching!
I'm interested in purchasing your Metabones/Viltrox adapter lock for my BMMCC. Will it work with the SmallRig cage for the Micro?
SmallRig have long since discontinued their adapter lock so it looks like this is my only option.
It will not work with the Smallrig cage, sorry.
Will, thank you for your work. One of the sources which helped me put together my bmpcc og based rig for my projects 3 years ago, and I have to say even now its difficult to move to another camera. Super thankful for that.
I need some help though regarding Timecode. I am preparing for my next solo doc project where I have 2(sometimes 3) audio sources recorded externally. And I REALLY want to use Timecode. Do you have any insight/ experience regarding this for Bmpcc OG? Can I input LTC timecode from tentacle to OG's audio input? Else, I have to move towards BMMCC (i think it has timecode feature).
Thank you in advance!
So glad it was helpful! Yes, you can run a tentacle into then OG. Just about anything with an audio input will accept that timecode method.
@@WillvonTagen Alright, thank you! looking forward to testing the whole setup!
I'd give it to BMPCC OG too as it is the only one that can be used without being rigged out.
How do you eliminate moire in Resolve?
Thanks for this analysis. Love your edit on the "but, but, but ..." Your analysis leaves me more undecided on which camera to buy than ever. The new upgraded New Mini Micro 4K is due to be released any day now. Will you review it? Perhaps you will reconsider some of your conclusions.
Thank you very much! Yes, I am very excited for the new Micro G2. You will definitely see a review of it here :)
I'm hope that 2 Micro G2's can be genlocked in sync @@WillvonTagen
Anyone used the Metabones Nikon G to BMPCC OG 0.58x Speedbooster on the Micro? It says on the Metabones page that it's compatible with the BMMCC, but I found it to be a tight fit. I've heard other users having similar issues. Is it better to use the 0.64x?
Thanks for the video, Will. Always appreciate your valuable information and insights on these wonderful cameras. They do amazing things.
I’ve never used Nikon so I cannot say for sure.. but thanks for watching and for the kind words!
Nice comparisons weighing the fact first and giving own feelings second. I owned and used both and personally I couldn’t tell the difference judging by the image or motion. I’ve even used the micro striped out with just a lens and a mobile attached for monitoring and although it wasn’t too obtrusive it wasn’t not as pleasant to work as the bmpcc with its shitty screen. When I’ll get one again at some stage I’m sure I’ll go for the OG.
Great video, but I must disagree with you on the audio on the original BMMCC. I was one of the 1st people in the country with this camera and I have shot multiple short films with it and I still use it to this day.
It’s a great little camera.
great cameras! I wish someone would sell it with a kit / rig as a minimal kit for work with it . cuz cameras cost less than all accessories
the king is back !
Hahaha
Probably a fool's hope, but I'm hoping there will be a BMPCC HD G2. Actually, just a reissue of the original might be a better idea.
That would be cool but I don't think it would happen. If they did, it probably would have occurred at the 10 year anniversary or something like that. But BMD would rather move forward than look back.
@@WillvonTagen I think you are right. BMD is moving on. And so am I. I've owned a BMPCC OG for several years, but since my previous post I've decided to migrate to the SIGMA fp -- full-frame, 4k, RAW recording, compact, modular, easily rigged out form factor.
Nice! I’m about to release a cage for the FP as well 👍🏻
@@WillvonTagen Excellent! I've already ordered the fp and SIGMA's kit 45mm f/2.8 lens that goes with it and will be looking for a cage and accessories. Some of the rigging from my BMPCC setup will be usable with the new camera, but I'll keep an eye on your offerings for fp-specific things I may need.
first off, excellent video. second, i have to agree 100%. even with your cage on my OG, i can just toss it in my bag and when i take it out and do some shooting it does indeed look like some piece of crap normie point-and-shoot camera. even the lens i use (the lumix 12-35) makes it look even more "meh" in most people's eyes. i never really considered how important this was till earlier this year i was getting shots with my 6k g2, which was rigged out with matte box, a cine lens, monitor, rods, focus puller, etc. and just getting the hard stares from everyone!
Haha, totally! Thanks for watching and for your support. Hope you like the cage!
Nice comparison between the two. I have both cameras and I love them both. I asked someone else about the difference between the two cameras and he answered : " in my opinion, the bmmcc footage has a flat matte look while the og-bmpcc footage has a shiny glossier look. I like the glossy bmpcc look more. Others will swear there’s no difference. th-cam.com/video/cDJh-oURf2E/w-d-xo.html"
If it wasn't for the media recording issue then I'd say the bmmcc is a better camera by a long shot
What media recording issue?
@@WillvonTagen the fact 99% of SD cards cannot work with 60fps raw.
I got the recommended 256 Kingston canvas cards and it would often drop frames. I then tried lexar, Sandisk and many others with no luck. The Kingston canvas were the best and did 50 fps just fine but it's a real bummer
Could you help me, my blackmagic pocket cinema cinema OG updated, making it very bad, the menu is strange, missing settings, can you tell if there is a way to return the camera to the previous version. In need of your help
Version 2.1 was the latest update for the OG. I’m not certain if there is a way to go back versions, but I would stick to 2.1 and try to make it work for you. I think it has all the settings and more from the earlier versions (and actually provides more record time on your cards in some cases).
What settings are you missing, out of curiosity?
These functions have been removed, I can only record RAW and proxy hq or the other formats are no longer available, there is no option to format the memory card, the histogram is also gone, the audio reference is not available either, the 4:3 reference formats, 2:39.1 and others also left.
They ended the system, I already sent an email to Blackmagick support, because the camera is horrible with this update@@WillvonTagen
@@_lucasoliver.oficial I am not sure if you did the update correctly. i would try it again and be sure it is the v 2.1. You should have all levels of prores and ability to format your card. There is no firmware "update" that would have removed those options.
And I'll send you a video by email, so you can seer@@WillvonTagen

Rawlite OLPF - Must have
And the .58 metabones Speedbooster as well
Maybe not mandatory, but REALLY nice to have. With the SmallRig lens support, it just lives on our camera bolted to the cage
Can you use Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 as a webcam?
You definitely can 👍🏻
@@WillvonTagen But only up to 1080p / 60fps ?
The OG Pocket records 1952x1112 while the micro records 1952x1104 in DNG, with the DNG telling software to open the files as 1920x1080. So the OG has 16 extra pixels in each direction while the micro has 16 left and right, and 12 up and down. If you open them in something like Rawtherapee you can get some more resolution out of them.
The micro also reads the sensor 33% faster, which is why it can shoot 60fps and which also means 33% less rolling shutter. The OG's rolling shutter is really terrible.
The Micro has a cooling fan which keeps the sensor at an optimal temp for image noise. the OG gets hot
Both cameras can also have an OLPF installed (e.g. Rawlite) which will greatly reduce the color artifacts and eliminate infrared contamination.
Also I doubt anyone in taipei's tourist areas cared to see a tall westerner with a camera, its just your fantasy. for you it was a special trip in a foreign place. for them it was 禮拜二
lol what’s your point? You don’t think tourists from Taipei visiting western countries do the same? It’s the beauty of traveling and experiencing new places, and most people want to document that experience one way or another. Don’t get the point your trying to make
The Micro has the advantage when comparing rolling shutter. It’s horrible on the OG. Not too bad on the Micro.
Yup, better RS, raw 3:1, 60 fps, full size hdmi, better cooling fan…MICRO is clearly the way to go.
I don’t know that I would say “horrible,” but I guess it depends on how you use it and with what lens. Thanks for watching!
For new cards, these are the way to go Kingston 512GB Canvas Select Plus UHS-I SDXC Memory Card

We also use some of the old SanDisk ones for 60fps Raw 3:1 and one of the older Kingston Models, but the first one I listed should serve you well
Great job
