      What I find interesting is the last place camera on the list was also used as the action camera on some of the MCU movies, like, "Captain Marvel" and while only and action B-Cam was still used along side the Alexa 65 and Red Weapon 8k. Sure the pocket 4k wasn't available when the production started, but still that 16th place cameras still holds it's own.

    Nice video. BMPC 4K also had a global shutter. That's why it only had 12 stops of DR. Regardless we still use ours on almost every shoot. It's been incredibly reliable as well unlike the pocket and UMP cameras. As to the form factor for it and the original BMCC that you ranked at 14 (you used the BMPC 4K title card as the interstitial for this camera BTW) was really targeted at DSLR shooters that wanted to step up from h.264 4:2:0:0 highly compressed codecs. One of the things that was stressed about this design was it's very very sturdy metal case that you could drive a car over and still use the camera. There was no 2.5K version of the Ursa by the way, Not sure where you got that from...

    • @MichaelGreenwoodMG
      @MichaelGreenwoodMG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was surprised that the 2.5K MFT version wasn't mentioned or ranked more highly even thought the 4k pocket which is MFT was mentioned partly because of the MFT. Many believe the 2.5K has a more "filmic" look and the metal body will be more robust than the plastic. You're right that the 4K Production has lower dynamic range because of the global shutter I have two of these for footage that requires global shutter so I'm really surprised that the original URSA was a) ranked so highly because it was so awkward and huge b) the 4K Production had the same sensor and was more versatile in terms of can be rigged or used on it's own. Quite shocked that the original URSA v1 or v2 gets a top 10 position too because of the failed promise of the upgradeable sensor which never happened

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah! You know what, I totally got this mixed up. For some reason I thought that 2.5k was an URSA variation but you're right it was the original pocket ones. My bad on that one!

      @@FrameVoyager the 2.5K aren't the original pockets (they were 1080P), they're the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K which look the same as the 4K Production and were made before them.

      @@FrameVoyager For what it is I almost like my older BMCC 2.5K (EF Mount to be sure) better than my BMPCC 4K. I said almost. It is NOT feature laden but is VERY simple to operate and has been mentioned, it's like a military vehicle in terms of durability.
      It is really the perfect camera if you want something like a Super 16mm film and DON'T want the grain (WHY do people add grain to their work UNLESS they are going for an older film look for 60s-80s period pieces!)

    BMPCC legacy camera got an update and does Prores HQ as well, it's still an incredibly solid camera. Seriously if it didn't have the micro HDMI port it'd still be perfect.
    I still use 2 of mine as B/C cameras to this day. Don't knock these legends. Also whilst discontinued i'd argue they are still amazing starter cameras and you can get a rigged out one plus probably some lenses for less than a BMPCC4k.
    Is it in the right position in this list probably though, but it's got an amazing x-factor.
    Also, I just got a 2nd 4k instead of a 6k pro because ultimately it does everything I need and a 2nd one offered more than investing even more for the 6kpro.

  • @EpictheEpicest
    @EpictheEpicest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I was hoping you would have compared the cameras more as opposed to just a list, like price vs specs vs applications, etc. For ex. The micro cinema camera is still probably the best Blackmagic camera to mount to a car or use with a drone, you can use really affordable c-mount lenses, it records to inexpensive SD cards, high native ISO, and you can turn it into a fully-usable production camera with just external monitor. So for under $1500 you can have a pro-level camera/lens combo that is better form factor than a DSLR, only need 1 operator, and small enough to literally mount to anything. As opposed to, the Blackmagic Ursa, which has more formats, more resolutions, larger sensor, global shutter, multiple large touch-screens, and really meant to be operated by at least 2 people on a tripod or dolly/crane. And then you have the production camera 4k, which is like the best of both worlds.

    Not sure how the original URSA is so high and the 2.5k is so low... and I feel the criteria of "it looks funny--must be bad" on the 2.5k is a bit unjust. The original BMCC 2.5 was actually developed after BMD made a field-recorder + monitor to record direct to ssd from other cameras. They then decided to slap on an internal sensor and dummy mount and the camera was born. I still think it outperforms 95% of cameras on todays market in both usability, image quality and cost to own and operate.

    Not controversial for me, I agreed with every placement. I think the URSA G2 is the obvious choice for cinema production over the pocket 4K, but when you consider the impact the pocket 4K had, the much lower price it had, and the software support it had, it's really easy to put it above the URSA G2 as being the "best" of Blackmagic cameras because it didn't compromise that much despite all the drawbacks

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a multi resolution camera, is the way I look at it. You get FULL sensor readout at 12k, 8k, and 4k. And as you go down in resolution your rolling shutter speeds get faster. So just allows you to have options for certain scenarios. I like 8k for certain interviews as it allows me to punch in a bit more.

      @@FrameVoyager It was my understanding that RAW recording does not allow supersampling so I assumed that if you wanted to shoot BRAW at full sensor width (which is the reason I intend to buy a BMD camera), you would have to film at 12K.
      Of course resolutions over 6K have their uses but I think the use case of 12K is rather niche and I wouldn't sacrifice 6K full sensor width recording for that option.

    I mostly agree with your list. I'd have the studio cams a bit higher up...especially the micro 4K which looks fantastic and is super solid in a LANC controlled multi cam setup. My number 1 and 2 would be the G2 and the OG 6K, in that order, and the 6K could've taken the crown if it weren't for the rolling shutter articfacting. The 6K Pro to me was a missed opportunity with it's mediocre ND's, awful QC, even more unwieldy of a form factor and still the wobbly rolling shutter. That the poll taken had the G2 so far down is shocking...it clearly has the best image of any BM camera in my opinion. What on earth were these people polled thinking?

    I got my BMPCC 4K the day it came out. I just happened to go to my local camera store, and they where unloading it off the truck, so they sold me one, even though they had a waiting list. Only reason I got it, is because I had a bunch of lenses from my GH4. When I got it home, i realized that I didn't know how to color grade, and my computer wasn't fast enough to edit the footage. So I didn't even use it that much for at least a couple of years. I'm glad I hung on to it, because they have done a bunch of firmware updates to it, and now the camera is pretty easy to use, and because of that camera, I learned how to color grade in Davinci. I still have it. As cheap as they are, everybody should own one. I also just got an OG. I love it for it's form factor. It's tiny, and shoots excellent video. The reason it is only at 2%, its because they didn't sell that many, so very few people have one, but those of us that do, love it. Plus, it is the only camera on your list, that is going up in value instead of down. In a couple of more years, they will sell for more than they sold for new. Very few cameras, from any manufacturer, are going up in value. I suggest you get one while you still can get them between $500 to $800.

    A lot of people had already invested in DSLR gear specifically for video.
    Making the switch to BlackMagic at that time a more obvious choice than adding another 2k for a Sony FS700 or similar cameras.

    Nope, to put all what are currently 10-13 above 14-16 in my opinion shows an complete lack of knowledge of what14-16 were. While 14-16 might be old school by today's standards, all of them were used in REAL MOVIES. Not only real movies, but the last place, bottom of the list, #16 was use in the MCU movie "Captain Marvel" as, among other things, the action camera, because it was the first 2k cinema capable raw shooting action camera. Did people notice that it only had a raw resolution just shy of 2k even though it was placed next to footage from the Alexa 65 and Red Weapon 8k? No more so than most would notice the original Alexa classics were only 2k as well. Yes, they are slightly softer than modern cameras, but more resolution is a useful tool, content and good cinematography is ultimately far more important.

    • @FrameVoyager
      @FrameVoyager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And this is why I like making these videos! Love getting everyone's fiery opinions 😂 I will say, they are using the newer cameras in movies as well. If I'm not mistaken, the 6k was used in filming some of the cockpit scenes for the new top gun movie. But beyond that, there are several different ways to grade the cameras based on your industry. Would a production camera receive a lower grade because it's not been in a movie? There camera lineup is pretty hard to grade. But I think if I redid it I'd add the bottom ones up a little bit higher 😂

    BM cinema 2.5k (title card says 4k for some reason) - you said this was like the production cam but designed to be more portable, umm no, they're the exact same body essentially, and it's ranked above the production 4k despite lower res and no global shutter. I actually agree with the ranking (i think the 2.5k just has a better image, and an extra stop of DR), just not the reasons (or lack of) in the video.

    I see you like the MFT mount of the 4K pocket but my personal opinion is that the MFT 2.5K should have received more of a mention and a higher ranking. Also, the original URSA (v1 and v2) and 4K Production were the only cameras that Blackmagic have produced with a global shutter and they have the same sensor. I don't think the original URSA should be a top 10 camera because one of the selling points was the interchangeable sensor but Blackmagic never actually made this sensor available in this model?

    • @FrameVoyager
