After rewatching the video now it's on TH-cam, I think the 6k is the sharpest, not sure if this is because of something that happened in the render or I just called it wrong at the time I was doing the voice over.
I have personally conducted comprehensive tests and can corroborate your observation: at first glance, the 6K image appears sharper (yet simultaneously somewhat more digital), but as you zoom in and delve into the specifics, a direct comparison reveals that the 12K image exhibits significantly more discernible details, even though the image may appear slightly softer.
I love this video boss! I recently acquired an Alexa mini but URSA mini G2 has been my main cam for the past 3 years or so. Definitely one of the most underrated cams in my opinion. Best camera decision I ever made. Probably will continue to be my go-to on 80% of my paid work. Continues to make my life easier and produce beautiful images.
Impressive test, though I find the slow-motion comparison somewhat misleading. The 12K at 4K or 8K, 120 fps, maintains an uncropped and natural image; it's only at 240 fps that the image quality noticeably declines. By the way, on my URSA 12K, there's no noticeable fixed pattern noise. I would always prefer the 4K, 240 fps over the 2K, 120 fps of the 6K, and certainly the 120 fps of the 12K in any case. Interestingly, color variations, especially in blue tones, seem to be influenced by different resolutions - don't ask me why, but I've noticed this in a test video I've created. This distinction even exists in the regular recording mode without slow motion, when comparing 12K, 8K, and 4K.
I did make a mistake on the slow-motion test, and I am looking back now. It was from a place of thinking the 12k would run away with it. My thinking was if I did them all at 120fps, then it would not show the 12k capability, and it would just be par with the older URSA. That backfired then, and i got FPN. What now, everyone tells me there is no FPN on the 12k. so I am not sure what happened at all. The biggest suprise to me was the color difference, I just had the idea in my head that they would all match really well. It was only my 3rd time using the 12k so next time I get my hands on it am going to run some more test and hopfuly get better results, because I love the images our of thay camera!
Interesting. I'm leaning toward to the new BCC6K despite it's shortcomings (main ones being rolling shutter and lack of good high frame rate options!) I always thought the big step up for me would be the 12k but the Ursa 4.6k g2 is always whispering in the background!!
I have my BCC6k on order. I can not wait to put it trough test vs my other Blackmagic cameras to see how to compares. I am also hoping Blackmagic have a 12K ursa with an L mount in the works as I think that could be an amazing camera.
With an IRIX Cine prime and an 98 V-Mount Battery the URSA12K is not too heavy to work with it a longer period of time. And the image quality is superior. I've also owned the 6K but just miss it a bit for its size. As you said you should consider an Easy Rig by the time.
You are Awesome; an instant subscribe from me, my Brother!! BMPCC Original owner here, but I love *any video* featuring any of the Blackmagic Cameras. 👍🏾👍🏾
All of my Blackmagic cameras are older than those, so no longer supported with updates, etc. I am considering the pocket right now. Fortunately, I have so many generic accessories that rigging it won't cost me much more than I have spent already.
My main 2 cameras are 6K Pros so if anything I appreciate the validation I got from this video. Although, I really didn't need it as these cameras have proved themselves time and time again on a wide variety of projects I've shot.
You've hit a nail on the head with every point! By the way, I've installed a rawlite filter on my 12K and it really helped with those true blacks, and freed some space so I don't have to screw on IR NDs as is the case with my pocket camera. 🙂
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a 12k with an OLPF. As you mentioned, I think it could be just what that camera needs. Thanks for commenting 🙌
@@OBP_ You’re welcome! That’ll be great to see your comparison with Rawlite OLPF and OG Blackmagic OLPF, and maybe vs an off the shelf IR cut. Interesting that the 12k has the best dynamic range in your test. The g2 has been tested, and is listed as 15 stops of Dynamic Range, while the 12k is listed at 14.
dude, rigging the 6k is no different than any other camera. The ursa does not come with a vmount plate. you need to rig the ursas up. you need a top handle to hold it. I own the 12k, 6k pro and a 6k. I owned an fx3 and fx30. had to rig those up as well. With my 6k pro, I slap an npf battery plate on top and the.SSD in the small rig cage slot and I can run and gun for 5 hrs with 2 npf-750 batteries. My 6k pro fits on my RS3 pro, start and stop through bluetooth and I dont have a fuss.
Total Sony guy here, but BM is dope and innovative which is good for everyone. I value ergonomics and versatility a little more than image quality. Sony FX3/6 still have incredible images but the ergonomics and versatility are fantastic. The FX6 is made to capture consistently and fast. BM’s got a great image though..
I am sure the 240fps on the 12k is sucky, but you should have showed the 8k 120, that would probably wipe the floor against the G2 or Pocket. Would have been nice if you lifted the shadows for the dynamic range test. Thanks for the comparison though. You are right, the ergonomics are way more important than the IQ alone.
I'm getting the Ursa Broadcast G2 since it's essentially a 6K pro in an Ursa body which is what I need going from the Pocket 4K and needing a camera that works well for cinema, docs and event shooting. Rolling shutter can be fixed in post and as long as you take into account about a 20% crop you should be fine. Love my Pocket 4K, but I always feel a little embarrassed at how Frankenstein it looks compared to the Ursa when rigged up in front of clients.
Solid choice, one of the most overlooked aspects of pocket vs. URSA. Is just how easy the URSA is to pull out a bag and shoot without screws coming loose and wires everywhere.
Did you add rawlite filter to the G2, I just ordered one because of the 3k price drop but I'm almost wondering if i should have gotten the 12k with olpf instead. What do you think?
5:40 = For me the 6K is for sure 100% the sharpest, aand when I zoom onto the windows it still is, maybe Its because of VP9 interframe codec ? Seems weird
100% agree. After rewatching the youtube video, the 6k looks sharper. I feel like the 12k has taken a massive hit after rendering into H264 for youtube. Strange one
I wouldn't say there is a BEST camera, but maybe a near perfect camera. The best camera, from a DOP perspective, is the one you are comfortable shooting with. You can make great images from almost any cinema type cameras these days. My 2 cents
I'm in the middle of a camera purchase deliberation right now. There are many aspects you need to think about. Things to consider: - Ursa pro G2 has better I/O, and more professional ready to go body than PYXIS - Ursa has better dynamic range (check CineD charts), much better rolling shutter and better slow motion options - Sensor size difference - what kind of lenses do you have or plan to use? Most lenses fit PYXIS but not the Ursa so you need to prepare accordingly. - Weight, rigging - Additional accessories. Ursa, depending on the package, is ready to film. PYXIS needs a lot of accessories to get there. You might get an Ursa package used that is double the value of PYXIS in terms of usability. And right now Blackmagic has a -40% limited time price cut for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K FF, which is insane value. If you only care for the box shape, go for PYXIS. If you care for value for money, buy the FF 6K now.
I was looking at the pyxis too, but now that the ursa mini g2 is the same price I'm picking up a ursa. The ursa also offers interchangeable mounts so you could use ef or pl which is a big win in my book. I heard sale ends on the 31st though
I find it odd that you think the 12k slow motion is unusable. Perhaps something isn't translating in youtube, because the only issue I'm seeing at 4k on my HDR screen is the color shift,a nd a lower contrast. the Point of focus is also slightly further forward on the 12k for some reasons, but the rim is is sharp and clean in all three. The 12k is also slightly more zoomed in than the others, and texture wise I think the other two are more interesting because they have additional water splatter on the inside of the jar, and in conjunction with less of a yellow color shift, it makes those more appealing compositions. They also finish faster due to their lower frame rate meaning they spend more time in the viewers eye. All the issue I have with the 12k are not deal breakers, as I think every thing I'm seeing is fixable, but again it's not an apples to apples test do to all the little differences. Anyhow, it's just my opinion.
Cool video, good insights. I have a winner for you. Check out Ursa Broadcast G2 (or Ursa Mini Pro 6K as some BMD employees was callingit on IBC in Amsterdam;) )- basically Ursa mini Pro body witk pocket 6K sensor inside. I went with this camera over 1,5 years ago, going through comparisons of all these cameras you've shown. Cheers!
Why not just film at 8k 120fps for comparison if you didn't like the way the 4k 240fps came out. Same frame rate as the other 2 cameras but double the resolution. In my tests the 8k 120 is gorgeous. Great video though! Thanks for doing all these comparisons. Super helpful for someone weighing out which camera do buy/ rent.
Yeah in Hindsight, the 4K 240fps was a mistake (although it's still very disappointing to me) I was trying to show that the 12K has better slow motion. I think by the time the 8K 120FPS was uploaded to TH-cam it would have been very close to the other 2 cameras. Thanks for the comment 🙏
Much appreciated video, @2:01 what setting do you configure to have your right monitor screen displaying the full screen image while the left is in the color management tab?
I do this with a blackmgaic IO card (decklink 4k). Although you can do this for free in reslove. Under workspace tab along the top, select dual screen on and then under the same tab, select clean viewer and pick you 2nd monitor. Hope this helps 🙏
The OG is Awesome, yes!! I have one, myself. It is still good for some people, but not the best for most professionals who use film cameras. It depends on the individual and the requirements for the project.
You had me at hello. What a pleasure in every way. Btw not totally sure why you have your camera above eyeline. Maybe to get the background. No big deal but interesting. Meanwhile couldn’t agree more about g2. Not really sure why you dont use an fx6 though? Maybe you do on the sly. Up against the 6k it doesn’t have as much detail maybe but a little sharpening and noone would know. The image is crisp and the blacks are black. I gave up on black magic because of the general weird ergonomic design and power issues with the pockets and lack of olpf and clean blacks. The g2 has always looked exceptionally great but maybe autofocus would help every so often. Of course there are work arounds and sometimes i find it slightly irritating that in the grade it is quite difficult to make the bm look real and unfilmic. I couldn’t get beyond its filmic look when sometimes it is nice to build up a look from a very neutral base. The reds are fantastic at that. The sony can look very “real” in a good way and that coupled with full frame and shallow dof and autofocus even, can create a very venice look which i think has replaced the filmic look in my film lexicon in terms of desirable looks. See lost girls or topgun maverick. Ironically though we have fx6s for rental i almost never use it as i prefer the Komodo feel when rigged and reds raw workflow. The image of all these cameras are great with the exception of issues around the blacks. Again im surprised you are not a canon user either. C70? Amazing image and raw. Appreciate if you like working on the shoulder then things get tricky but that’s why the Komodos versatility means its a go anywhere camera. All in all the g2 has a great image is designed to go in the shoulder and has an evf all great. But the screen is too small to be anything but a menu source and that means the camera get bigger than it already is out of the box. Agreed its an easyrig candidate but so many situations in doc especially where a low profile is everything means the ursa is a hump at best and a permissions magnet at worst. Meanwhile loving the content and delivery. Thx
You are totally right. I should use an FX6 or C70. Would make my life so much easier , I shot on the FX6 maybe 3 or 4 times now. (Never used a C70). It's just somthing about that dam blackmgaic look always brings me back 😂 if I had all the money in the world I would shoot alexa 35 with a full team on every shoot but that's not reality and that's probs where i struggle. Also, I totally agree about the "real look" one of the reasons I moved my youtube camera over to the lumix. There is defo a time where having a filmic look is a bad thing.
Yes, I used 400iso to keep it native on the pocket but added more light to get the false color to place the green in the same places like the white on the lens chart and my skintones. Etc.
@@OBP_ Got it. Btw, the native ISO thing is absolute horsesh*t when it comes to shooting raw. No need to stay at that number. In pro res? Sure, native ISO is helpful, but no such requirement in raw. 800 is a perfectly good way of testing against other cameras and minimizes all the work and variances. Cheers
Personally I think BM should bring back the big Ursa with 10 inch flip out screen. And give us a full frame 8K global shutter sensor. Atomos make those sensors
Helpful to compare these 3 to each other. I have 5 pockets and a couple 4.6ks and have been considering getting a 12k but this shows the flaws on it i’m trying to avoid.
PL & EF mount can both be netflix approved, but they need the OLPF fliter fitted (this lives just in front of the sensor, i believe). You can buy it fitted or pay blackmagic to fit it to an older one.
It's pretty crazy to me that you gave the slow mo test to the 6K when the slow-mo test you set up was literally designed to compare each cameras slowest frame rate. You can't give it to the 6K when the 6K can't shoot at 240fps at all. If you wanted to compare the picture quality in slow motion then you should compare the lowest common denominator max frame rate each camera can shoot which would be 120fps. Then you'd be comparing a cropped 2.8K to full-sensor 4.6K to full-sensor at 8K.
This video is geared towards professional users, and most professional filmmakers would not use a BMPCC OG, as it doesn't fit the requirements for what most clients ask for. That being said, yes the BMPCC Original is definitely still an excellent camera, with a very natural film-like look to its footage. I own one myself. 👍🏾👍🏾
Your slow motion test is flawed for the URSA 12K. Why did you only test it in the Super16 4K 240fps? That is not it's main slow motion mode. It has 17:9 8K 120fps and even 2.4:1 8K 160fps, those look better than the Pocket 6K and 4.6K G2 hands down. Please don't publish such rubbish tests if you don't own an URSA 12K. A camera for hire vs an actual owner is way different.
Yes, I made a mistake on the slow-motion test. That was from a place of thinking that if I did 120fps across all cameras, it would not show what the 12k is truly capable of. I did say at the end of the video that the 12k is the best image, and I stand by that. I love the lookout of the camera. But I did get FPN, but I'm not sure why, and I have had multiple ppl tell me that the 12k dose does not have FPN, so I'm not sure what happened. It was only my 3rd time shooting on the 12k as you mentioned it is not a camera I own (yet). I'm going to redo more tests the next time I get my hands on one. Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙏

I think the main difference between those three great cameras is to have a good script or not.
Agreed!
Which firmware version did you use for the 12K? Your clam of fixed patter noise on the 12K is false. How were you exposing the shot?
What was your ISO on the Pocket 6k? It looks like you went to ISO 400, which would be darker. Is that what you did?
Yes, I used 400iso to keep it native on the pocket but added more light to get the false color to place the green in the same places like the white on the lens chart and my skintones. Etc.
@@OBP_ Got it. Btw, the native ISO thing is absolute horsesh*t when it comes to shooting raw. No need to stay at that number. In pro res? Sure, native ISO is helpful, but no such requirement in raw. 800 is a perfectly good way of testing against other cameras and minimizes all the work and variances. Cheers
The 6k looked sharper to me
totally agree after seeing it on TH-cam, now sure if it was a mistake by myself or something in the render that changed.
Personally I think BM should bring back the big Ursa with 10 inch flip out screen. And give us a full frame 8K global shutter sensor. Atomos make those sensors
atomos and blackmagic are not best friends. they have to produce there own sensor I believe.
Awesome vid🎉
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment!
Helpful to compare these 3 to each other. I have 5 pockets and a couple 4.6ks and have been considering getting a 12k but this shows the flaws on it i’m trying to avoid.
12 k is insane. I think it would be unwieldy lol
Is only the OLPF Netflix Approved or would they approve a 12K Pro with EF mount?
PL & EF mount can both be netflix approved, but they need the OLPF fliter fitted (this lives just in front of the sensor, i believe). You can buy it fitted or pay blackmagic to fit it to an older one.
@@OBP_ Awesome, thank you!
Love the accent!
4.6 Broadcast g2 and 12k go 2 setup but look at 4.6k Broadcast
did you use full frame or crop on the 12k slomo?
why didn't you include the bmpcc original? For $500 it's worth its wait in gold.
on my screen the 6k is the sharpest
4.6k easily 😁
G2 has more dynamic range....watch the sky......
I am struggling to understand your accent. Ensure you manually generate subtitles for your videos.
Blackmagic is to Tesla as RED is to NASA.
What jah forgot is us who already own a bunch of L mount glass.....6K babay
Not to use one, my boss would throw me out of paramount if I mentioned it
pocket 4k is the best
6k pro

👏👏
Why do you hate the Blackmagic 2.5k cinema camera 😂
😂😂 because it felt like it was made in someone garage, although it has a place in my hart 🫶🏼
Mostly St. Pancras station. London
Floor, where you may see how Eurostar trains departure to Paris and arrives from it. 🙃
