Hey you! Yes you there, the thousandth person coming down here in a hissy fit to tell me how mean and nasty and unprofessional I was to that poor, poor, ignorant flat earther. Stop. You have zero perspective on this situation. Weiss is a con man who lies for a living. He knows he's wrong, he just spews a script of lies to make money on the internet. Politeness is a window to gish gallop and spread more lies, and you can clearly see how angry he got when I pinned him on every lie in his script, pressing him to respond to things he knew he couldn't respond to. He does not deserve respect. He does not deserve decency. He deserves annihilation. He deserves public humiliation. His remaining followers are impervious to facts and logic, so the only thing that works is a demonstration of what a sniveling, lying, pathetic little toddler he is. Also, no, he was not polite. The first words out of his mouth were to slander me regarding the content on my channel, and all he did was call me a "dick" every time I proved him wrong. He's a douchebag. And guess what? Even if he wasn't a con man he still should be treated this way, because politeness toward this "issue" would give the illusion of two "opinions" with equal footing. There aren't. The earth is objectively a sphere, as we've known for thousands of years, and anyone who says otherwise is actively calling all of science a lie, and literally all scientists liars. That's insanely offensive. This is how you deal with flat earth con men. Get on board or get out of the way. Got it?

In my experience it's a lot easier to convince someone of something if I don't refer to them as subhuman vermin. I wholeheartedly believe that this guy deserved everything you gave to him, but I disagree with the general sentiment that politeness toward a person you have a disagreement with gives weight to their argument. You can unwaveringly insist that someone is blatantly wrong about something without insulting them.
One more time to be absolutely clear though: Fuck FlatEarthDave

You could convince more people if you didn’t interrupt him and literally gaslight him into thinking he’s interrupting and changing subjects when it’s really you who never even acknowledges or understands his “stupid” point of view. You’re debunking what you THInK he’s saying and but it’s not what he’s saying half the time. Your Neil deGrasse Tyson tactics look better on his rude ass, with the actual TACT of patience and understanding the subject he’s trying to insult. Grow up and gain a perspective. You don’t really know Jack till you start acknowledging u don’t know everything about everything and everyOnE. We share this damn egg-shaped planet, and you’re a huge socially crippling, emotionally crippled, toxic douche of a human. Big words. You manipulate people to stoop to your level. Can’t believe I bit. Gross content by a gross soul. Be kind. And get your tech working. Let a poor fool defend himself just once if you’re so certain. Or don’t publish your incompetent attempts.

My favourite is flat earth Dave's insistence on an explanation for the sun orbiting the earth in order for the Eratosthenes experiment to have validity. It's an experiment in and about _geometry,_ and the geometry is valid provided there is relative rotation, regardless of where the centre of rotation is. If you think about it, it's only really once people started understanding gravity and its consequences that they had a way of distinguishing between geocentric and heliocentric models.

Think of FE Dave as a pigeon trying to play chess. Lots of people are cheering this pigeon on, but that doesn’t change the fact he doesn’t know how to play. Dave Farina knows this, so rather than try and beat the pigeon in chess, he does his best to prove to the pigeon’s audience that he has no idea what he’s doing. He’s not entertaining FE Dave, he’s demonstrating live that he doesn’t understand what he’s saying.

Heck, for the issue of impossibly long days in the southern summer you don't even have to go that far: the FE model breaks down _noticeably_ far sooner. I used to work with a guy who is a flat earther. I never dismiss someone's beliefs out of hand without giving them serious thought and consideration. For that reason, I bought this book: 100 Proofs Earth is Not a Globe. I honestly believed and expected it to contain well written, thought provoking proofs.
However, the vast majority of the proofs were of a form similar to this: [statement that clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of an area of science] followed by, therefore the earth is not a globe. A good deal of the others were simple personal incredulity: I can't believe that, therefore that's not true, therefore the earth is not a globe.
I had several discussions with this co-worker. I even created a diagram based on the flat earth model to demonstrate that what we see does not agree with the flat earth model. What I learned from these discussions is that science is wrong, math is wrong, geometry is a lie.
What I eventually realized was that flat earth is a religious belief and like all religious beliefs it does not require scientific proof. For that reason, providing scientific proof that counters the flat earth model falls on deaf ears.

This is the terrible downside of the internet. It's allowed the stupid and idiotic who would normally get shutdown by the majority IRL to loudly voice their sense of 'I'm special' and to find the people who not only already think like them, but to also manipulate and influence those who are vulnerable and prone to thinking like them. Those that feel misunderstood, oppressed, disenfranchised etc with their beliefs (rightly so). To now have the conformation and validation of others with similar reality denying and lack of fact acceptance trauma. Those who question hard facts and logic due to their association of it with and their dislike of authority and things beyond their mere comprehension and understanding. To seek each other out, group together and via emotional fuelled vengeance and white-knight platforming against ‘authority’ (aka those who actually know what they are talking about and so they have the right to inform you of things such as when you’re wrong and when thinking is flawed). Compounded by their use of the Dunning-Kerger confidence low IQ boost to be to too stupid to realise how little they know, thinking and believing they know more than they actually do. To infect and corrupt the minds and connect with more of their emotionally and cognitively insecure kind. The easily emotionally swayed and paranoid ‘big antigovernment sheep-following group thinkers’ amplified by algorithmic echo chamber of likeminded ‘others’ to them. Further confirmation biasing their thoughts and instilling a stronger self-confidence in their beliefs, both of themselves, and naturally, within their communities of delusion. Even group defending what they ‘believe’ their group thinks (emotionally, group attached and motivated. Can’t think for themselves as they depend on the group for bias confirmation and their false cognitive security) furthering the acceleration of nonsense spewing and disinformation-confusion spreading all while profiting of it via either attention, (controversially, negative or otherwise. As the ego-obsession for attention is greater than none at all) or profiting by money (and the encouraging support and applaud from their cult), only further confirmation bias that they ‘must be’ doing something that has value within it. As they gain from it, even a little is extremely motivating if they’ve never got much attention or recognition from anyone beforehand.

Look at the beginning of any new media. They all enabled the spread of awful information. One great example and comparison is steam powered printing in the middle of the first half of the 19th century. It created a massive boom in newspapers, and with all those newspapers came a huge demand for content. This is when tabloids started. These papers also would have been a great place for actual snake oil sales to thrive. My personal idea is also that this new media boom enabled The Know Nothings who were around in the US a bit after 1850.
All of this really matches up with how social media has boomed, and how the subsequent demand for content has enabled the spread of misinformation.
It's also worth noting that the current flat earth stuff is taken almost completely from a similar movement that was around in the late 1800's and early 1900's. There were books and public debates about the topic at the time. According to a history of publishing article, this was a time when there were a lot of new publishing houses opening, and book printing technology had made it feasible to print as few as 1,000 copies of a book.
There are definitely other examples that had varying impacts. Some are small media innovations like direct mail, email chain newsletters, and infomercials. Those definitely helped spread misinformation at a faster rate.
So, the question I ask myself is what could possibly be the next big media innovation that throws us all for a loop while we figure out how to become literate enough to consume it safely? We think we're super advanced now, just like they did in 1899.
      Too long. Sorry.

If you use spherical mathematics, you could prove that the earth is a sphere. Leonhard Euler (a swiss mathematician, physicist, astronomer, geographer, logician, and engineer ) postulated that in the year 1753 ! If you draw a triangle on a flat surface, the angle sum of α + β + γ is 180° . If you draw a triangle on a sphere surface, the angle sum is slightly more than 180° The deviation from 180 degress is proportional to the area of the triangle.

I’m a retired professor of medieval lit and history, and the person claiming that people in the Middle Ages believed the earth is flat - NO. There are references to the earth as a globe everywhere including The Canterbury Tales and medieval manuscript illustration, which I have seen... Also, the Greeks had already proven the earth is a sphere centuries earlier. The nonsense about the medievals believing in a flat earth was never a “thing” until the 18th and 19th centuries as part of Protestant backlash against Catholicism - they made up nonsense to argue that medieval Catholics were stupid. Sadly there seem to be a few stragglers living in 2024 are now taking all of this seriously. Sad.
