  • Here we show how to remove an instrument cluster (Dashboard clocks) on an Audi TT Mk1. This was to replace the centre display screen & replace the processor that controls the gauges & the display - If you need a new display fitted to an Audi TT Mk1 or a full refurbishment then visit us at ECU Connection by clicking on the link below:

very informative, i myself managed to successfully replace the screen, but still have a problem with the fuel gauge (was faulty before). When reassembling and attaching the needles, the fuel gauge always went to a different position, same with a replacement stepper motor. Since i couldnt solve the issue i put the original stepper motor and everything back together and into the car. But now the needle stay at off position and low fuel light/beep comes on all the time.
Before i opened the cluster for the screen replacement i also suspected the sending unit to maybe be the problem, but with the needle going crazy at the bench without the signal, the cluster itself must be the problem, or am i wrong with that?

Hi & thanks! These units are pretty old now & can have many problems with dry joints, usually on the SMD resistors - best to reflow all of them on the board, also the software in the 2J47Y can get corrupted or the 2J47Y itself can be faulty & also the voltage regulator can give problems.. good luck & give these items a look!

Can I ask why you replaced the processor? I have a problem with the speedo on my MK1 TT cluster. When I run the output tests via VCDS the sweep does not go to 100km/hr. It goes to about 97km/hr. If I reposition the needle to 100km/hr it does not return to zero. Could I need a processor replacement/reprogram?

Hi, thanks for watching!.. personally I always set the speedo & rev counter at zero (ign power on) before doing the output tests & don’t worry about where the needle sits at the end of the output test - the important needles to set are the temp & fuel needles, these must be exactly at the midway point at the end part of the needle sweep test, I don’t think you have a processor fault.. In this case we swapped & reprogrammed the processor due to the fuel & temp needles over reading constantly, we replaced the display & reflowed the circuit board & reprogrammed the processor previously but this particular cluster refused to behave!

I am looking at getting a mk1 tt and the mk1 tt i have viewed the lcd screen in the middle contantly shows this symbol "---------------" across all of the lcd screen would a new processor and screen fix this issue? , im thinking the screen works but the processor is broken? any ideas?

Hi, thanks for watching - sorry but without having the cluster in for test & repair it’s not possible to say what the problem is, it may well be the processor but it could easily be something else causing the issue…

The rpm and temp gauge of my cluster isn't working anymore. I changed both motors but it still not working. Do you have any clue of the problem?

Possibly the circuit board will need reflowing of all the resistors, this can often be the cause, also it could be the 2J74Y processor / software glitch on this processor or maybe even the voltage regulator on the PCB..

Hi, yes this is a known issue we fix - the actual fault is corrupt Eeprom data in the MCU, it’s recoverable & we offer this service on our website:
