Great episode. That's where I grew up hunting. My second year in the Navy I hunted the Front in similar winds. Saw a huge non-typical that gave me the slip in similar fashion. A very memorable hunt. 28 years later I still feel that wind.
all the things you speak of with regards to shorter season, picking your weapon type, limited entry and roads all over the freaking place...well, there is a a name for that place and its called Utah!!
Joseph, I couldn't agree more. In a way I'm kind of thankful for the ATV crowd because they always seem to push elk and deer my way. I try not to hunt within a 3 HR drive from SLC or within a mile from any drivable road.
Randy, when you do voice-over narration it reminds me of the old Mutual Omaha Wild Kingdom shows or the PBS shows about wildlife in various places. Ever thought about a series like that? Would it be a marketable thing to get out? Hmmm....
That's interesting. I used to follow that show. As for marketing something like that, it would be hard in today's world. The platforms doing such are very big and have huge financial backing, so an small independent like me would get crushed.
Since I am sitting on maximum points for sheep in MT, I won't be doing an unlimited hunt, as I wishfully dream that some day my number will get drawn for a limited entry hunt. And, I cannot get a public land film permit in the Wilderness Areas where most the unlimited hunts occur.

Being in Montana , I will tell you our hunting is awesome, that said we are getting a lot of anti hunters here from more liberal states. This is causing a lot of tensions here in SW Montana between hunters and the anti's from California, Oregon and Washington. Randy I hate to correct you on elk and roads but we hit elk here everyday on the roads/ highways, they are not afraid of roads, thats is not a factual statement , I know I live here. Max Baucus, was cast out of office by Montanans 90 % of which are hunters whats that tell you, he wasn't that great.He voted for Diane Feinstein's gun ban, so whats that tell you as a hunter.

Hey Randy, when it gets really windy like that, do you think it's an advantage or disadvantage on deer and Elk being able to smell your sent?
Not sure. I will spread it further and faster, but probably dilute the smell faster, also.

Totally accurate. I still have a strong back and legs, so I still do very well in deep country.
