    I’m not a new follower or a novice hunter happening upon your stuff. I’ve had similar health issues at the wrong time before and I wanted to leave a note that I respect the hell out of you telling a story like this. It’s years old now as a tv program, but it still strikes me in the heart to see you struggle with health, pride, and what it means to tickle that line between tough and stupid. I appreciate the full spectrum and I will make it a point to catch up on these older seasons as the winter wears on this year. Its a good reminder that I need to get working out to be prepared for my next opening day.

      Thanks for that comment. It is a fine line, for sure. Sometimes my mind doesn't listen to my body and I end up in situations like this episode shows. It has happened a few other times. As I get older, I get a bit smarter in how I handle it and I seem to be better and knowing when it is time to let my liver rest. Thanks for watching.

    As a new hunter, a fellow Nevada grad, an Elko resident, and someone who also suffers from a disease prone to flair ups, I feel for you Randy. Thanks for the shows, and best of luck to you on your next Nevada hunt.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wish you did not have flare ups. But, my reason for showing that was to try illustrate that even though this hunt was a bust, I try my best to take each day as a blessing and take advantage of all future hunts that come my way. Best to you.

      Well said, and you're right, it's part of the journey. Not every day will be sunshine and rainbows, nor every hunt for that matter. But it makes us stronger and strive to take advantage of the opportunities presented to us. Hope you have a good, healthy season.

    Randy, this a great lessons learned video for folks unfamiliar with western climate. People that have never hunted in this dry, arid climate do not understand how easy it is to get dehydrated; it sneaks up on you and by the time you feel it, it's too late. I've lived in AZ now for 13 years, and I still mismanage my hydration from time to time; this weekend on a mountain bike ride as a matter of fact! Plus we're not as young as we used to be!

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeremy Courtney - Very true. Add to that fact I have a strange liver condition where dehydration is very harmful and it was a tough few days. Hydration is key in arid climates, even in cold or heat, and especially at high elevations,

    Much respect Randy. I searched this video out when it was mentioned in another of your videos. I too have a hidden debilitating disease that I work thru as I hunt public land and teach my twin sons how to hunt. You just became my top role model and most relatable TH-cam star. Thank you.

    I love everything I see you in from TV to your podcasts and as a guest on other's podcasts to TH-cam. I love the authenticity you bring to the story and the passion for DIY hunts on public land. Not all of us are in perfect shape nor young as we used to be. I learned hiking with my scouts years ago that we don't sip water in Nevada, we gulp with gusto, and that still might not be enough. I've seen you in a few Nevada hunts now and I'm glad about that! It seems to me that Nevada is treated as the red-headed stepchild of western hunting, so to speak, even though there are some real trophies to be had in some magnificent country throughout the state. I shot my first deer in an area not far from where you're hunting in this video. Great memories. Glad you made it out, and I hope to see you keep making fresh tracks.

      I graduated from college in Reno and lived in Nevada for almost six years prior to moving to Montana, so I have explored much of that amazing state. I will take any tag I can get in Nevada. Thanks for the kind comments. Good luck this season.

    I love that they show the so called failures of the hunt. Nevada is definitely a hard place to hunt and most of hunting is just that. It is hard. But I consider what people call failures a learning experience. Not all my hunts end in a successful hunt but really more lesson learned and preparation for the next hunt. Great show and keep up the great work.

    Fred Bear said it best... "A hunt based only on trophies taken, falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be". You truly proved it in this episode Randy. Great show and fantastic country. I'm glad I found your channel and am looking forward to watching many more great episodes!

    How often do you come across rattlesnakes on these desert hunts? All those rocks looked like perfect habitat - this Canadian would have been on high alert looking for snakes as I'm not a fan ...

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite often. They usually move along with no worries.

      Good to hear. I think I would be worried about putting my hands up on a ledge or stepping over a rock/log. But then many people are very concerned about bears up here in Canada and for the most part I don't give them a second thought!

    Thanks for doing this show, its because of these episodes i feel better about getting into hunting, i'm doing it all on my own, just bought my first rifle and put in for some tags this year. i'm learning so much, i have a long way to go, but i'm learning so much. i'm glad to see in this episode, how its really done. Any advice for someone just learning?

    Great vid Randy, I know how hard those mountains are my dad had a tag there last year. All I can say is cardio training is needed before a hunt on these mountains!

    That Nevada high country really wreaked havoc on your liver condition. I am glad you made it out ok. That is some big big country that is very deceiving and steep. I hiked that same area two years ago scouting. I was above Greys Lake. I found some quality bucks. I ended up hunting that season more into the Ruby's rather than the Humboldts. Thanks for sharing your story. I plan on going back in there this season, should I draw a tag in the second draw.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good luck if you go. I should have rested at our truck camp another day or two. My liver was giving me fits before we left, and the hike, dehydration, and altitude only amplified it.

    There is nothing wrong with showing hunts that you go bust on It's not new to hunting, but I think for non hunters they need to see the joy is not in the kill, but in accomplishing a goal and that hunting isn't what all the rest of the hunting shows lead people to believe!

      Thank you. I continue to struggle with this liver condition. I wish it could be fixed, but when I look at some of the problems others deal with, I smile and give thanks that I am still upright and able to hike the next ridge. Best of luck to you.

    Randy - I am not sure what exact liver disease you have but I hope by now you've done extensive research into the benefits of CBDs on liver disorders. Especially since you get flare ups and swelling everywhere. I can't help but believe during those painful periods a solid joint or pill of CBD alone or with THC would have helped you during the hunt and/or sitting at home. Check other natural supplements as well. Hope you're better, keep up the fight on public lands and state land transfers. You've inspired this 31 year old public land hunter to get off my butt and actually call and write our congress to express my feelings as well as donate to the likes of BHA. I am pushing this agenda to every public lands recreater I know!
