Her level is incredible; she went to a bilingual/French school from a young age so I'm not surprised.

She is so fluent. I'm a native French speaker and I'm not ashamed to admit that she speaks a better formal French than I do.
She went to a French Lyceum in Los Angeles.
Maybe it's just me but I always heard everybody say plus proche l'un DE l'autre. Are there someone use À or other?

Jodie Foster went to a Lycée Français, as did I. There are schools of this type all over the world. They are demanding but they are worth it.

In fact, we should say "Plus proches l'unE de l'autre". We're speaking about "les personnes" = feminine world

Au demeurant, le français de Jodie Foster est excellent, et oui, bien meilleur que celui de nombreux français eux-mêmes. C'est remarquable !
I don't know if it was mentioned before, but Jodie Foster is actually SO fluent in French that she makes her own dubs!

She went to a fancy private french school in the USA since she was a little kid, so don’t feel bad if you aren’t up to her level. Whilst she may not natively be french… I would hesitate to say she went through the same learning curve as you(people who don’t have this background) and whilst she seems to have put a lot of effort into keeping it up, keep in mind you all didn’t have this privilege so don’t beat yourselves up when learning gets hard 🙂!
I had no idea Jody Foster spoke French. I understood everything she was saying as a French Canadian living in an English city.
Jodie Foster speaks perfect ( like 99.99999% perfect) French. Her knowledge of the language is impressive. Sometimes she makes tiny mistakes like ' le monde de finance ' instead of ' le monde de la finance'. Her pronunciation is so good, really. And French is my native language.

Growing up and seeing her on French tv I thought she was French but because she was famous in USA everyone was saying her name Foster with an American accent, how disappointing it was to find out that this gem was not ours 😅
She attended the Lycée Français de Los Angeles, a French-language prep school. She delivered the valedictorian address in French.
Jodie Foster's french is almost perfect (not to mention her accent), though she sometimes makes some gender mistakes like "le monde DU finance" instead of "le monde DE LA finance". There are some here and there, but it's not a big deal. She's fantastic.

Hello ! First of all I want to say that Jodie Foster's french is wonderful ; its something I've known for ever ; she uses expressions that sound so french ! You can hear her very very very tiny accent in some words, when she says "l'impression" for example ; but it's funny cause when she says "tous les trois" I dont think there's any mistake. Very nice video, thank you.❤

At 8'40 she says "l'un de l'autre" in a very daylyfrench speaking contracting the "de", she actually says "l'un d'l'autre". She is absolutly correct
Jodie's mum used to watch french movies in LA in the 70's. she was a great fan of François Truffaut. Jodie grew up in this atmosphere. Her sister used (still ?) to live in Toulouse and she often comes to Paris to see french expositions. We saw her in the queue waiting for to come into a painting exposition in Paris last year...
Même si elle fait quelques fautes de français, je trouve que c'est celle qui parle le mieux le français et son accent est juste parfait !! Son niveau est incroyable elle parle mieux le français que beaucoup de Français eux mêmes.
My takeaway is that the French education system is superior, probably by far the best in the world. It's beyond just the language (which is rich and beautiful), it's the whole package of the content they teach and the behaviour they instill in the children. Been to France 5 times and i am continually impressed by their kids and they way they comport themselves.

What strikes me most about Jodie Foster's French is that with her pronunciation and intonation she sounds like a native speaker even though she makes some mistakes.

Elle a fait la totalité de ses études en français et a obtenu un baccalauréat au lycée français de Los Angeles (ce qui explique qu'elle parle couramment le français sans aucun accent américain).

@@babelbabel2419 perhaps not. But some are worse and some are less severe. I’ve heard native French speakers say things like « ils croivent » or « c’est la chose qu’on l’aime bien ». So really what’s the difference? My point is there’s no just thing as a perfect speaker, not even a native. One can nitpick on anyone’s language faults.
I grew up speaking two languages. I admire anyone who goes out a learns new one.
She learnt French as a child, so she is bilingual. Yes learning a second language as an adult requires a huge amount of work. I’ve met lots of people who speak three or more languages.
Very interesting! Little remark: Jodie Foster " plus proche l'un de l'autre" and not "l'un à l'autre". She is correct, as we say "proche de...", and not "proche à...". Otherwise she sounds sometimes exactly like a native French speaking person!!!! Incredible!

I’ve always loved her, for many reasons. When I saw “A Very Long Engagement”, speaking French the whole time, I was super impressed. It’s a tiny handful of American actors who would dare to work in another language, whereas there are tons of ESL who flock to Hollywood.
Very good analysis ! Jodie Foster is so impressive in the way she speaks fluently and naturally while expressing deep ideas and concepts. Actually, at 8:38 you didn't heard correctly. She said "plus proche l'un DE l'autre" which is the proper forme in French, but not the right gender, as "personne" is feminine. So it should be "plus proche l'une de l'autre". You could translate it as "closer to one another". For the rest, you did a great job ! (I'm French by the way ;-))

Thanks for this. I love Jody Foster. She's such a brainiac and what a femme! It made me aware of the importance of developing a bunch of random, elegant filler phrases to supplement my vocabulary. She does it so naturally.
i need them to slow down my feelings of anxiety over leaving large gaps in the conversation, but gaps are good. They show a lack of anxiety if done right, especially while searching for something relevant to add to the conversation. It gives the listener a sense that the speaker cares about the person he or she is addressing.
She does make small mistakes once in a while (often using the wrong preposition, or not using one when it's needed) but her accent is impeccable. And about the French R sound, it's spot on, like a native. The thing with many English speakers who reach a good level of French and attain a good French pronunciation is that they would say the R too strong, to kind of counterbalance the English R sound, which will sound almost correct but not the way French speakers would say it. But Jodie Foster got it perfect, basically like a native.
Her English is top notch. Impeccable!
She really speaks as a French person. I would not know just by hearing her.

Great video. Really instructive and a very sensitive handling of what could have come across as rather sniffy.
« Proche l’un de l’autre » is the good sentence, and can be “l’une de l’autre” in feminine form, while “l’une à l’autre” is not a correct expression, not in this kind of sentence. But hey, you make an amazing job, it’s not easy to analyze a language that is not our native language. For me it’s French (je suis Québécoise), so it’s easy to point this, but I wouldn’t be comfortable to do this analysis of English ! And Jodie has a so good French, she often double herself in the French version of her movies. I mean, how many people can do that ?!

Well, there are a few errors of interpretation, in my view:
2:47: "le monde des finances" (pas: "de finance")
2:40 / 3:03 / 3:24: "tous les trois" - she clearly says that, no need to pronounce the French "r" in a very visible way - except in songs where this is done ... So, the French "r" usually is very "tender" ... and so, that has nothing to do with a lack of practice or not exercising that muscle ... I would even say, whosoever has attended French school has a good feeling for how things are pronounced ...
3:37: "Le monde des finances est guidé par une technologie qu'on a inventée ..." - that's the way it is written in French and the reason for that the object / accusative here comes before the "que" ... In such cases of influences the writing.
3:48: "... mais pourtant on ne peut pas maîtriser parce que ça nous dépasse".
Certainly, the combination "mais pourtant" would be a little bit unusual in French - but in the spoken language probably still acceptable, in the sense of "exchanging one word for the other", like: mais ... pourtant ... but that's not the main problem I see here:
The problem - as I see it - although it's not a big probl - is that, in the subordinate clauses, the "que/qui" should have been repeated:
Like in: "mais qui ne peut être maîtrisé" / "et qui ne peut être maîtrisé" ...
That's the real problem here, in my view.
BUT ... now I see, she even said it - but it cannot be found in the transcription, on 3:38 ("mais qu'on peut pas maîtriser ...")
So, the structure of tge phrase she uses - in my view - is quite correct, even the repeated "que" is not lacking ... otherwise, perhaps, one could say it would be a gross error ... just the "mais pourtant" - but without "QUE" - WHICH would make the structure a bit unusual perhaps ... - but it is there, in her speech ...
6:22: "Quand je vous entends à travers ..." (NOT: "je vous entend")
So, "j'entends" is always conjugated with "s" - like in "je prends" - It's the verbs on "-re" ("entendre", "prendre" ...)

I’m a beginner-beginner French learner by which I mean all I’ve got so far is an eAudiobook from the library and what I find on the internet lol. So all that to say, I’m already quite overwhelmed (can you tell I’m American by how I’ve used quite?😆I’ve been told y’all use it opposite of us haha) and was reluctant to add yet another French TH-cam teacher to my subs, but I loved your perspective! It’s adding another dimension for me, thank you! I’m a full adult, low on time, and scared of all the warnings people keep tossing at me about learning past 12, but Im determined to learn enough to at least understand French speakers. Ideally, I’d like to also be able to reply 😂. Thanks for the great tips! It’s helping me keep the motivation and hope for this French goal 🤞🏽!
If this can help you, I would recommand watching kid stuff such as disney movies in french (I guess there is the option on Disney+? ), as it's intended for a kid audience, they are super careful to use easy words and to have a nice pronunciation ^^

You cannot tell listening to her that she is not French born. You can notice a very slight accent, but only if you really pay attention. She is awesome !

I just find your channel. Your videos are very well constructed. You do an amazing job and it must take a long time. I am learning English but it's interesting to see how English speakers also learn French. Jody Foster has a very good french and some of her mistakes can even go unnoticed by a French person. She says "l'un DE l'autre" not "l'un À l'autre". Her mistake is the gender but the expression is good : l'UNE de l'autre" but again this is a very slight mistake. She also says "monde DU finance" instead of "monde DE LA finance" . We use "DU" to replace "DE LE" not "DE LA". She also forget "POUR" when she say "POUR qui que ce soit" But again she's great. I hope this little insights help you.

My native language is Spanish and I speak English 100% and my accent there is very strong but I never minded making an effort to change it or make it softer because I just use it as a tool, but as french is something I’m learning for pleasure and because of the way it sounds (I find it beautiful) I wanted to sound correct... Jodie Foster is absolutely stunning in french. There are a few glitches here and there:
- le monde du finance (I heard "du" honestly) that should have been "de la", le monde de la finance,
- tapisserie, as in tapestry. That word is used in english in its own right, and will give the general idea in french but... image in french would be sharper I guess, as one would not focus on canvas nor history, but rather on the final result. Either that, or one would spend more time explaining history and rather use the term conséquences,
- deux personnes plus proches l'une de l'autre would be the the usual statement. Proche de is close to,
- il y a très peu d'femmes. It is stunning how she masters liaisons. And not only in this segment: un p'tit peu différente... Immersion you say ? :)
- qui traite de l'humanité... you deal with, analyze, describe. You don't deal... well unless you enslave or judge humanity.
Concerning your own comments, here are a few thoughts I'd like to share if you allow me to:
- dans et à travers are really different. Dans implies a static state, à travers means going through, so the device counts for nothing. What is important are the emitter and the reciever. Dans means the device gives me the information. There is something subtle here, eg "I hear you" and "I get it" and this information will pass through either in formal or common language,
- arriver à: your explanation show how much into french you are. Impressive.
Bon! (ie Right, Okay, So), I hope my comment wasn't rude to you, b/c it certainly wasn't from my perspective. I'm just adding something to the pot.

8'40'' She said "plus proches l'un d'l'autre", which is a sort of contraction of "l'un de l'autre". And in french we more speak about "le monde des finances" rather than "de finance".
Jodie correctly says l'une DE l'autre. And it's quand je vous entends (S à la fin !!!!) Also, she doesn't need to know the specific word for earpiece (oreillette). It's perfectly fine to say "appareil", everybody understands. Her French is very close to perfect (le monde de la finance, but seriously it's so good we don't even care) It's very clear she is very at ease when speaking French. Always a pleasure to hear from her.

Except tiny mistakes she makes sometimes (but even us, native speakers, we make mistakes, and i even consider she got a better french than most of us) she sounds more than fluent, she sounds like a native speaker. Which is simply incredible and very rare to reach that level in any language :)

I suppose "treats of" for us is a bit archaic, but since I'm archaic I might use it. For example, I don't know, Dr. Johnson's treatise treats of topics familiar to the gentle folk of a bygone era.

After more than 30 years living in the US, my French accent is still with me. Ms. Jody Foster succeeded in reducing a American accent to just a slight color almost non-existent. It makes her French speech so charming and personal.

The reason why Jodie speaks French fluently is because she went to a French school from an early age. She is de facto a native French speaker. In fact because of her privileged education she speaks better French than most native speakers. So what if she makes the occasional grammatical error. We all do in our native language. Acting in a French film was not brave it was natural for her. This is not cruising Jodie she’s a great actor.

Foster speaks perfect French like a french. She only makes sometimes grammar mistakes which is weird for a french listener.

Je trouve vos vidéos très pédagogiques. Autant pour les anglophones désireux apprendre la langue de Molière (façon de dire la langue française), que pour les francophones car vos interventions font suite à une séquence francophone et on peut ainsi recontextualiser vos interventions et par la même occasion se perfectionner dans l'écoute et la compréhension de la lanque anglaise.

Correction from the video: Yes, it's "l'une à l'autre" but because we say "proche de quelqu'un" it should be "l'une de l'autre". Both Jodie and I got that wrong :p.

D'ailleurs j'ai noté une autre petite coquille de Jodie Foster que tu as reprise : La finance est féminine, donc on doit plutôt dire "de la finance" plutôt que "du finance".
Sinon j'aime beaucoup tes analyses, elles sont vraiment super sympa à suivre ! Si tu veux des idées d'autres célébrités à analyser j'adore écouter l'accent enjôleur de Darren Tulett sur bein sport :)

Jodie Foster is excellent in French she is fluent , you should have showed Also when she was child she was just as good and did many French tv appearances .
