    The Korean Kovea Spider Stove
What it is : The Spider stove from Kovea is an iso-butane system that was designed for use in not only warm conditions but cold conditions as well.
This stove can be inverted, it will run on liquid gas and guess what, it really works well!
MSR is an example. Snow Peak is too.

    Weight :
    Full Kit - 7oz
    Just the Stove - 6oz
Cost : $66 on Amazon at the time of filming. The price of this stove has gone up over $20 in the last year or so….
    Materials : Primarily Stainless steel
    BTU’s : 5,633 BTU’s
    What’s included :
Stove - Storage bag - Ignitor
    Features :
    Foldable legs
Adjustable flame all the way down to simmer
    Anti-flare tube
Low center of gravity makes the stove very stable
    Cold Weather Use :
An incredible viewer sent this stove in for testing, Michael, thank you brother! It was right at the end of winter here so my testing in the cold has been rather limited; I did get it out into the low 20’s for a camping trip and roared when the fuel can was inverted. In cold temps, the hose is rather stiff.
The stove features a pre-heat loop that is close to the burner head and that allows the stove to run on liquid gas in cold conditions. It heats the liquid fuel and vaporizes it.
You fire up the stove, turn it to low, allow the pipe to warm for around 30 seconds, invert gas can and you’re good to go.
It has to be lit in when in the normal position; if you attempt to lite it when inverted you will experience a fireball….you don’t want this.
Note : Not all stoves with a similar design can be inverted; do not invert a stove that you specifically do not know was designed to be inverted. If you do, you’re going to have a very bad day.
    Pros so Far :
    Excellent quality stove
Very good design - speaking of which, this is a product that hit the market in 2012 and it hasn’t changed in any sort of meaningful way.
    Very reliable so far
Very good performance - I have yet to be in a situation where I could complain and that’s in cold weather as well as warm conditions.
Very stable - locking legs are awesome
Cold weather performance has been excellent with my limited use.
There are a number of adaptors that can be purchased so that different types of fuel can be used - for an example, there is a Butane adaptor and a propane bottle adaptor.
Excellent adjustability - you can simmer or go all out.
    Stove folds up small enough
    Cons so Far :
The Kovea web site is shockingly scant when it comes to
Piezo Ignitor is a weak point; I’ve seen plenty of reports of people having issues, I’ve seen videos on YT of individuals having issues….have I had problems getting the stove to ignite with this?
Yes, it simply isn’t that good.
Tip : Add a bic lighter to your stove kit and if anything, use the included Ignitor as a backup…
Tip : Go flow on the stove, get the Ignitor directly to the burner head and go. That gives the best chance of ignition.
Not the lightest stove - there are systems out there that weigh much less.
    Rather poor wind resistance.
BTU’s on this stove are a bit low when compared to the competition. Does that really make a difference? No, when you are out in the field on your adventure, you will not notice a minute longer to boil.
    Pot supports aren’t exceptionally grippy
Small head doesn’t provide the best for cooking meals; stoves with a larger head will spread the heat over a larger area.
Included instructions are in Korean which needs to be corrected for safety reasons.

Thanks for the honest review, Luke!
For full disclosure, my store specialises in KOVEA stoves, adapters and official spare parts, so we have a lot of feedback from our users around the world in some fairly extreme conditions down to -20C / -4F. I’ve only just discovered your review and thought you would appreciate a few more observations which aren’t covered in the comments below.
Re power, fuel efficiency & boil time: If you add a wrap-around windshield, you can greatly improve both fuel efficiency AND boil time. We developed a DIY design made from beer cans, which works really well.
Re Igniter: the end of the igniter should be in contact with the top of the burner head, and the gas is on low to medium setting. This usually works every time at lower altitudes, but it stops working reliably above around 3,000m / 9,000ft due to thinner air.
Re instructions in Korean language: official KOVEA dealers internationally provide English language instructions with all products, so yours is likely a model made for the South Korean market.
On top of these points, recently some of our customers are telling us they like that KOVEA products are made in strategic ally South Korea, and not in a competitor country, where a lot of other low-cost stove brands are made.
Hope this is helpful (and food for thought). Cheers. Steve

I have been using this stove for many years and have taken it to Colorado and Wyoming. With a good windscreen and teapot style wide bottom pot, we used it for 5 days in Grand Teton and mostly boiled water for 2 people and still had 1/2 of a 4oz mini isobutane canister left.

I live in South Korea and have been here since 2005. Kovea is a very popular brand for camping supplies. I have reviewed many-a-Kovea products on my channel too. Great products imo. Thanks for the review. If there is anything you're interested in reviewing from Korea, let me know and we can coordinate.

Great review but I have several counterpoints. I knew the igniter was junk when I bought it so I trashed it immediately. I take a lighter and flint and steel. I believe this stove is intended for backpacking so it really is geared to heating water to rehydrate meals. Also with most of these stoves, you should have a windscreen to increase the heating potential in all conditions. I bought a titanium Bobcat Kovea Windscreen and baking plate from Flat Cat Gear to help with heating food/water in our Evernew Titanium pots and with all weather conditions. The baking plate is a great addition to extend what you can make.

I have the MSR version of that igniter. I fount it works better when I drilled a hole in the end to better allow flow of the gas into the lighter. I should have put in two holes. It may even work better. That will happen. Nothing to lose.

I have two of these. One lighter broke very quickly. The other one still works, but I just use my firesteel to light them anyway. I've had them both for years and LOVE them. I quickly bought a 2nd one after the first because the bang-for-buck is/was amazing, and I do a number of group trips where we will be cooking multiple things at once. The burner is small, but it throws the flame to the sides slightly compared to some others that just shoot straight up, so that helps a little with making it perform like a *slightly* bigger burner. I have often been able to cook and simmer using this stove with various pots and pans all the way up to the larger Fry-Bake pan as well as a 3 liter pot.

Wellllll... I still have and use my old Optimus 8R and Svea 123R. I have the mini-pump and special tank cap for that, mostly with the 8R because of the box having room for it, and it works just fine in winter. They use Coleman fuel, and I have some small Sigg bottles with special caps for that. They each put out about 5,000 BTU, and simply Work. And HAVE, flawlessly, for over 50 years. Just dont let them run dry so you dont have to replace the wick. Yes, surprisingly, you can still get parts for them! No they are not made of helium unobtainium with negative weight. BUT. Back when we started we had 80 lb Grumman Canoes, too. And yes we portaged them too. Ok, I have a nice light weight Graphite solo now, but still use my old Camp Trails external frame backpacks. Most of my stuff is old and heavy, but hey! It all Still WORKS! AND I dont have to 'properly' dispose of empty fuel canisters. Jerry

About the piezo ignition device: From what I understood is that these things work by catching gas from the stove into the tube and then give it a spark. So at 2:18 holding the piezo device more vertically to allow gas to enter and stay in the tube might result into a faster ignition and lighting of the stove.

I watch a couple of TH-camrs from South Korea. They don't camp like we do...Their camping sites are amazing...No roughing like do...They all "car camp". Most likely the reason this stove hasn't changed is because the Koreans are using them on proper table tops. Still that is no excuse for the lousy igniter. but then again, I don't see the Koreans using it either. They use the long nosed bbq lighters.

First off, I like your reviews. They have steered me clear of some products but I have been satisfied with some of the products that you have given positive reviews to. That being said, I am a Canadian Soldier and I willing to shell out some money for additional kit to make my time in the field more enjoyable. I have been using the MSR whisperlight stove and it works great in the "holy &$$& it's cold Manitoba winters. I found it more reliable than what we are provided with and it can take deiseal which is I nice option if I ran into an emergency as our vehicles use it. I do use white gas and gasoline which substantially cheaper than the white gas alternatives, and still preforms great in -37 Celsius. Strength and Honor to you.

In the electronics world, I normally hear "piezo" pronounced with a hard E in the first syllable. I find stoves come in two flavors: those designed to boil water fast and those designed to cook. I'm not a big fan of freeze dried meals and tend to go with cooking over boiling water,(except for Folger's Nasty). This might fit more with my style. I can give up BTUs for a good simmer. Enjoying the show. Keep doing what you do. Great review.

Have used the Kovea spider for about 3 years. Super reliable, folds down small, needs a wind screen in the littlest breeze. Not Super fuel efficient averaging 7 or 8 grams for 16oz boil. Being able to use butane cans is great $1.50 to $2.50 per. Haven't noticed much difference in boil times from Isobutane and straight butane.

  • @TDizzle5408

Have used this stove for a while. Good review like usual however the key selling point for me is the massively increased efficiency when utilizing a windscreen and fantastic simmer control. Any attached canister stove that is not remote like this is unable to safely wrap with a windscreen. Something folks should consider depending on their usage requirements. With a windscreen and the bobcat baking system I often bake bread and such utilizing a double pot method and the excellent very low heat control from the spider. Food.....for thought.

So, the Coleman stoves and lanterns using liquid Coleman Fuel have what they call generators on them that with heat convert the liquid fuel into gas. In time the generators burn out and can be easily replaced with a replacement generator. Can the liquid to gas tube, on the Kovea stove, be easily replaced when it burns out, and it eventually will? I've used everything from homemade tin can cookers, heat tabs, folding stoves using Sterno, propane, Coleman fuel, and fires with grates. All do the job, but this little Kovea seems just right for a back packing adventure.

BTU…. Does a stove that burns hotter/faster use more fuel in the long run than a stove that doesn’t burn as hot but boils water? I guess my question is about efficiency. If I slam the pedal to the floor I might outrun someone but run out of gas before the end of the race. Is that an issue? I probably didn’t word that very well.

    • @jamesellsworth9673
      @jamesellsworth9673 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You said it well. Yes, hotter and faster stoves require more energy over the same period of running time. In THIS test, the same amount of water boiled in HALF the time it took the slow-burning setup. That has to count toward efficiency.

    • @Omega-Survival
      @Omega-Survival ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jamesellsworth9673 Roger that, but if it burned half a tank of the liquid fuel upside down vice 1/8 of a tank in standard configuration that wouldn’t be a very good option unless it was an emergency situation. Same for other stoves in a standard configuration. Are they burning loads more fuel than the lower BTU stoves or is it a relatively insignificant increase in fuel consumption compared to the poorer performers?

The more moving parts there are, the more chances you have for part failure. I've had a pocket rocket for 25 years. It's still in perfect condition, has never failed, and is very light. If you are car camping, feel free to bring the biggest stove you can fit in the bed of your truck. If you're backpacking, get something else. Just my two cents...

Another advantage in cold conditions: You even can use the cheap butan only canisters with summer gas. It doesn't matter that butan stays liqud in winter because the pre-heat loop gasifies it. Keep your butan warm or heat it up in your clothings, shake it (the kinetic energy is converted into thermal energy) and use it upright the first seconds, then tilt it over, as mentioned. The propan part of the more expensive winter gas helps, but is not neccessary.

I don't care about how fast but doesn't longer mean more fuel get used up? See, I'm a small 'wood' (also can be used w alcohol)stove, uco mini flat pack person so I don't know the ins n outs of these types of stoves. Thanks Luke, your vids have helped me more times than I can count. Blessings Brother. Btw, its so loud it would prob drive me crazy, lol. Especially inverted

Yes and no. What most people don't consider is that the size and shape of the pot is just as, if not more important than the power of the stove.
Getting equal amount of water to boil in a larger(within reason)flat pot with lots of surface area will be significantly more efficient and quicker than doing the same in a tall narrow pot made of same material with same wall thickness.

I'm a degenerate and use an alcohol stove. It may take 15 minutes or way more time to cook food or boil water, but I'm used too wasting my time looking at the scenery while cooking. I just do not like burners like this. Each stove type has its' good and bad points and I agree with many peoples' thoughts.

Wolf's Den you could use the magnetic screen door help with a good air flow. But mostly the tarp system could be implemented to add a awning over the door so you don't have to hide inside when it rains again.

Yeah that is definitely a nice little stove. Because of that pre heat system and being inverted. But I'd like to see it in single digits. Lol but even up here in Michigan the winters have not been real bad lately. And a old long neck bick lighter would be a good idea for a replacement igniter.

I’m about to purchase a ultralight stove. I’m just curious as to how long do those Coleman gas canisters last?

    • @jamesellsworth9673
      @jamesellsworth9673 ปีที่แล้ว +1

These Coleman canisters last long enough to be a practical choice for a weekend of backpacking. They hold up for frying and boiling in the size of pans and pots Luke was using. 'Your results may differ'🙄😊: Run these on high heat and (surprise!) they go through gas faster. In cold weather, it takes more fuel to raise the temperature of whatever is 'on the fire.' The same is true in windy weather without a windscreen. My problem is more about how to handle partially-used canisters and ever-decreasing gas pressure.

When you say there are faster stoves for boiling times. This is a big consideration 1) how much more fuel does this stove use with longer boiling times ..2) how much more does a higher btu stove use to boil water, this is really the review that should be discussed. ISNT THIS THE NEEDED INFO WHEN DOING A REVIEW. a stove is a stove it weighs this it boils water, yeah we get it..let's get down to it, this review wasn't very informative. Omg it boiled water really that's it.

    • @NulodPBall
      @NulodPBall ปีที่แล้ว

Actually his point seems to be that it boils water, even when it's colder than the point at which butane normally won't produce a gas... you just have to keep the tank near your skin so you can get it started so the pre-heat tube can do it's job.
In my opinion, the lack of ability to do a liquid start is a negative, but still... it'll work more reliably in cold weather than your standard butane stove... of course, if you use a propane adapter you can lower it's useable temperature range by alot.
