  • @PaulHojda

    Running out of gas can damage your fuel pump, as gas acts as a lubricant, and without it, the gas pump runs dry, causing it to overheat

    • @PaulHojda
      @PaulHojda 8 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      +Paul Hojda Also, if you run out of diesel, you need to bleed the entire fuel system, which is quite a pain...so just don't be stupid and run out of fuel

    • @Re_Kitty
      @Re_Kitty 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      +Paul Hojda gasoline does not act as a lubricant, only disel does. What running out of fuel can do is clog up your fuel filter with the debre that floats around the bottom of the tank, but that's no big deal. A gas pump will know when there is no more fuel and stop, its controlled by computers.

    • @turbodistortionirmc

      +Paul Hojda true for diesels but petrol has barely any lubricating properties, more than air but its not so bad

      yep very bad to run the fuel pump dry. always best to keep more than a quarter tank because the fuel also is what's keeping the fuel pump cooled.

      djafar mobin which car have you been driving? running out of Gas once won't destroy the fuel Pump. It Can Last more because sometimes it Can Happen that you run out of Gas, so it's supposed to not Break Down once you run out of gas.

    • @2011Transformersdotm
      @2011Transformersdotm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      djafar mobin i Know your Point but the fuel Pump cant be destroyed so easily. People Act like as if He fucked up his car By just going out of of Gas one Time. That Pump Can hold that damage For several times but don't count on that.

  • @Thumbii
    @Thumbii 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    1. Don't try to start it with an empty tank: Fuel pump is lubricated by fuel.
    2. Prime the system first, don't try to start it right away (turn ignition on/off a few times to let the fuel pump pump some fuel)

  • @mitchelplanken4441
    @mitchelplanken4441 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    1. Never run out of gas intentionally. Critical parts of the fuel system are either cooled of lubricated by the fuel that passes through these components. Also, when the tank is almost completely empty, debris from the bottom of the tank can make it's way through the fuel lines into the fuel filter, which in turn can get clogged up. Running out of gas doesn't necessarily mean that any of these things will happen, but keep in mind that there's a risk of it happening.
    2. Never drive with your foot on the brake. This will result in increased brake wear, and most likely will cause overheating of the brake rotors and pads. Once these components have been overheated, they need to be replaced. To check if your brake rotor has been overheated, look at the color. If the outside of the rotor is red/pink, it has been dealing with extremely high temperatures and won't function like it would normally.
    3. Pumping the gas pedal before trying to start the vehicle (2.57) might only work on carburated engines. Doing this on a modern day engine won't do anything other than moving the throttle valve. Also, when cranking the engine whilst trying to start it, don't apply any throttle either. This can also cause damage to the injectors. (He kept his foot neatly off the throttle whilst cranking.)
    Note that I'm not trying to be a smartass by any means. I go to school to become a mechanic and I've worked on a lot of different vehicles in my life.
    I just can't stand people who are trying to make an informative video, whilst not knowing what they're doing. People who've got no knowledge about cars might be having less luck when trying to do this.That way people can get quite a repair because they're encouraged to do these kind of things.
    Please don't encourage anyone to do stupid shit like this, but inform them about the risks of running out of gas, and what this may do to your vehicle.
    -Mitchel

I'ts good practice to prime the fuel pump every time you start the car. People love to just jam the key in and immediately start the car.

    Back when I worked at Mazda, we did dealer trades with another Mazda dealer about 80km away. They were always new cars that came right off the truck and maybe had 3 to 4 litres in them. I always made it a goal to not fill it up and make it back to our store. 3/4 times, I ran out. After I ran out it was easy, get my boss to pick me up and fill a jerry can, put about 3 litres in the car, turn the key on and off a few times to prime the fuel pump and fuel lines, crank to start and they would always start like when the had gas in them. Don't know why your Honda was giving you such issues about that.

      Feras AlGhanimi Hahaha yep. I asked a few of our techs if it's damaging and they said not to gas engine high pressure pumps since they're built very well. On diesels, the pump durability is "dumbed down" due to the lubricity of diesel fuel, but when the lubricity is gone, the pump grenades. VW has bad issues with those.

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Milton Yup, turning the key on(not the car), to where all your dash lights come on, listening for a hum or buzz noise from the back of the car(that's the fuel pump running). It'll stop after a few seconds, so then you turn the key off, wait a few seconds and redo the procedure about 3 or 4 times.

    • @juliencrawford9257

    • @Mr.Legend_Speaks

      Yup, I think it's because air goes through the pump and fucks it up. Worst part is that it's hard to get to it. A friend of mine had the same experience.

    • @dave0161
      @dave0161 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Electric fuel pumps will, since no liquid (gas) is flowing through it to cool down the fuel pump

      @Iphadtouch1243 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Educ8 why?

    • @TheOriginalEviltech
      @TheOriginalEviltech 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Iphadtouch1243 He might be referring to the old diesels that need to bleed all the air out of the system, which might also cost you a battery and a starter motor. New diesels have fuel at low pressure continuously circulating to just before the high pressure timing pump or the pumping nozzles. That means that if there is fuel again in the tank turning the ignition key will switch the fuel pump on and pump the air out without turning the engine.

  • @Rfc1394
    @Rfc1394 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I've never run out either, but have had to bring gas to friends occasionally. I'd say if you have to add gas carry a 5 gallon can. If the car is on a hill, it can require at least 3 gallons before it can reach the engine due to the tank being tilted.

      +Re Good try, but diesels won't die. It just takes a really long time to prime the air out of the lines. If you don't prime a diesel enough before cranking you can air lock it in which case a mechanic needs to purge the air. A diesel fuel pump is about as durable if not more so than a gas pump.

    Another thing you should know driving with very low fuel and the gaz light on can eventually brake your fuel pump because the fuel pump needs to be lubricated by the fuel to work efficiently if it dosn't have enough gaz anymore it's gonna start sucking air and it's gonna eventually brake, this is why when the gaz light is on its recommended to fill up as soon as possible cause that when your fuel pump can be dealing the most damage.

    I know he was doing this for the hell of it, but for anyone who does not know, if you run out of gas, you need to prime the system when you refill it before you try to start it. Basically you need to rebuild that fuel pressure before it will start back up. To do this turn the car on and off about 5 - 6 times and that will make the fuel pump prime the system and you will be good to go.

    cycle your key from the on and off position, pausing when on the on position for the 10 seconds. it willl cycle the fuel pump to reprime your system. when your vehicle is completely out of fuel it takes a minute for it to pull fuel into the injectors with pressure in the line to keep them fueled to start the motor. You dont actually need anymore than a gallon, you just need to let it self prime properly.

    well, there is always a first time for everything i guess. and yes, i ran out of gas today. my first thought was, oh no i broke the gas pump, after i had poured about half a gallon of gas in my car and tried to start it. then i looked for some help in TH-cam and came acoss this video. so i went to get more gas and after pouring another half of gallon, the car started without a problem. thank you milan you made my day.

    I suspect you'd have to really submerge the fuel intake to help the pump suck it up and prime it. I would have also kept the key on ignition for a while before turning it over. When the key is turned from accessory to ignition, the fuel pump will generally prime. Considering the fuel had to travel all the way from the tank to the engine distribution - it probably took the time you took with all those attempts

    • @DistractedTrader

      Ps my biggest worry is miss-fires and pistons not moving where they are suppose to - as fuel isn't delivered where the ECU thinks it should be :P If someone can tell me if thats a legit concern or not, cheers.

    As someone who's run out of gas quite a few times:
    My 1998 skoda felicia needed about a liter and a half to start.
    My 2000 honda hrv needs about two liters to start.
    My skoda did about 60km at a consistent speed after the fuel light started blinking.
    My honda does roughly 60km at a consistent speed after the fuel light turns on completely.

    Man..if you have such a situation all what you have to do after putting a bit of fuel is to start the engine from the first time you crank it with your accelerator fully depressed since your lines are full of air and you need to drain that air through your injectors ,the more accelerator position you perform the more opening you get at the ends of your pipe lines and fuel then will come fast and recover your engine...thanks

      +Bashar Rikabi That is not true, the "gas pedal" is actually only controlling the amount of air the motor is getting. The fuel injectors are controlled by the computer and the MAF sensor. The only way to get air out of the lines is to cycle the key on and off 4 or 5 times to get the fuel pump to cycle on and push the air back into the tank through the return lines.

    geez.. turn the ignition a couple of times WITHOUT trying to start the engine to fill the fuel lines with fuel (using only the pump). Use 3-4 sec long bursts. You will hear the sound of the pump is changing after the lines are filled properly. Then you can start your engine without killing the battery.

    The closest I came to running out was in my pontiac sunbird v6. I cut it so close that the engine started to sputter as I pulled up to the pump. The car had a 14 gallon tank and I put 14.3 in. I'm guessing the extra .3 was the filler neck. haha

  • @gagejopek9175
    @gagejopek9175 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First off gas cools your fuel pump and if you run out of gas it overheats. You can also blow a fuse by doing that. And another tip is if you run out of gas and put more in you should turn the key to the of and on position multiple times to allow the fuel pump to fill the fuel lines as its very bad to run the engine with out gas.

    Strikes me that once you knew the tank was empty, you shouldn't have cranked the engine to test. That may have caused your fuel pump to draw air into it, which can be hard on it. You might have had a successful startup attempt if you hadn't cranked it before filling the tank back up. Though I realize you were only trying to demonstrate.

    my bronco gets about another 40 to 50 miles on e before the engine dies. that one gallon can is enough to start it on flat ground. you have to turn the key on and off at least 5 times to get the fuel to run through the line and get enough pressure for the injectors to mist the fuel. when you turn the key on wait at least 3 seconds at a time before turning the key off. some fuel pumps will run at least 5 seconds before shutting off if you dont start the engine.

    that is because when u empty ur gas tank the tank and the fuel housing gets evacuated and void. After that when u open the gas tank for refilling the air in the atmosphere will enter into ur fuel housing ie the tube that made a connection between the tank and the combustion chamber on ur engine that air will prevent the fuel to get into the combistion chamber, so it will take some time to get the air evacuated from the housing.
    after that ur vehicle will gets started

      pigandro Depending on the injection system, some diesels you need to bleed the fuel system of air which is f_ckes up.
      Also diesel is primarily an oil, which helps cool and lubricate the parts it comes in contact with. Those parts include the fuel pumps and the injectors. When you run out of fuel, parts tend to heat up, more-so the pumps than the injectors, because at least the primary pump will continue to try and pump with having the aide of the fuel to cool it.

    This method puts tons of wear on your fuel pump. The best way (for your fuel system) is via the schrader valve on the fuel rail. 99% of vehicles will have it. It looks like a valve stem for a tire. The valve is there to perform service on the fuel system. This is tricky if you are alone. You want to place a rag under it so you do not spill fuel and turn the key on to engauge the pump, and use something small to depress the valve and let the air out of the system. With someone helping you will get it the first time. Depress the valve until fuel comes out and it should start on the first try.

    When you poured the first can in, the fuel line and pump were empty. Weight of the fuel didn't fill the empty fuel system and the pump didn't have enough suction to get the fuel moving. The second canister upped the total weight of the fuel amount, forcing the fuel to hoses and the circulation and the pump was able to provide fuel. This is my educated guess, for all those wondering.

    If the car is pointed "Up hill' it will be harder for it to drag what little gas it might have in trough the empty pipe. Also, gas is really really dirty. It's not like 100% pure. So when you run out you are pumping a lot of dirt into your engine. Try to never let your car run on the reserve because that is the dirtiest portion on your tank.
