I'm a chemist and have worked in a lab testing gasoline and diesel. This is for the protection of the consumers in our state. I'm pretty sure most states have a lab to do this. Most of the information in your video is correct and very useful. Thank you for making sure to emphasize the octane rating you see at the pump is NOT the energy content of the gas. It's all pretty much the same between 87 and 93, unless of course it has a higher percentage of ethanol (Uh can we say E-85? why would someone run this fuel 🙄). Ethanol will decrease the amount of energy in the gasoline, but it's added to make the gasoline burn cleaner and is good up to 10%. Something you didn't emphasize enough though is what "octane rating" actually is. It is NOT the amount of octane in the gasoline. There is little to no octane actually in gasoline (octanes are eight carbon hydrocarbons). The octane rating is the "equivalent amount of octane" in the fuel so that will resists knocking as if it contained that percent of octane. Gasoline is mostly made up of mixtures of toluene, and xylenes. If you ran pure toluene as your gasoline, you'd be getting about a 110 octane rating, but this wouldn't necessarily be good for your engine. When gasoline is made, the manufacturers control the mixture of hydrocarbons to get a clean burn and the proper vapor pressure (vapor pressure is the pressure of the vaporized gas above the liquid, not to be confused with the engine pressure). Also the gasoline must be protected from oxidation (this is why you add fuel stabilizer when storing for a long time) and contamination like water or particulates. Every brand of gasoline has slightly different proprietary ingredients to do this (as you've said at about 6 minutes). Also, the time of year will dictate what vapor pressure the gasoline manufacturers must make the gasoline to deliver to the consumer. Forget octane boosters. A pint of octane booster won't raise the octane rating of a full tank of fuel enough to make a difference. If you have a high performance engine that's been engineered for high compression, you're going to know you need a higher octane rated fuel. You aren't going to hit that 87 button. Are you?🤔 By the way, most mid-grade pumps, mix (in the pump itself) two parts of 87 with one part of 93 to get 89. But if you look at the price per gallon, they usually give you the "mid-price" between 87 and 93 for the 89. You'd be better off cost wise, by pumping 10 gallons of 87 and 5 gallons of 93 if you really want 89. I suppose mixing it well enough in the tank might be problematic for the first few miles. Really, you didn't need the 89 anyways. Octane Rating Tests Explained: One more thing you didn't explain well was how we get the octane rating in the USA. Yes RON stands for Research Octane Number. It refers to an actual test engine and ASTM method D-2699 for testing the octane rating of spark ignition fuels. My lab uses a RON called a Waukesha RON engine. It varies the compression of the cylinder to make the fuel knock while holding other variables at constant values (temperature, fuel/air mix, engine speed, etc). There is another test engine my lab uses, it's called a MON or Motor Octane Number engine and ASTM method D-2700. It too is a Waukesha engine that varies the compression of the cylinder but holds those variables at different values, mostly the engine speed is faster on the MON (900 rpm instead of the RON's 600 rpm), but I believe the inlet temperature of the RON is also kept higher. The RON and MON tests give slightly different results for octane rating due to the differences in these other variables. MON is always lower than the RON, by about 10 octane ratings if I remember correctly. In the USA, when you see the (R + M)/2 on the pump's octane rating label, it's telling you that the gasoline is rated by testing by both the RON and MON methods, and the final number you get is the average of the two test results. I rarely hear this average referred to as "PON", but I know it's not PUMP Octane Number. I had to look that up and if you want to trust Wikipedia it stands for "Posted Octane Number". In Europe, they only test with the RON method, as you've said, so this is why their octane ratings are higher. They don't have the lower MON test averaged into their octane rating. Great information in your video for all consumers. I gave it a thumbs up. 👍
Premium is the best but it cost more I used to haul gas they told us not to drop gas at the premium had more than one in our or 1 inch or less of water and regular could have over 3in and more trash in it you get more trash and water and regular than you do premium cuz we had to go pump the tanks
Ethanol is a renewable fuel source and can be locally produced when gasoline refinement or import is infeasible. For a chemist, you're remarkably short sighted.
We generally only have 2 different grades in the UK. I've only ever bought the higher octane when I had an RX8. Was always told high octane is just for sports cars. Now I know lots more on the subject. Great video as ever.
I've never seen or had someone teach/explain to me the difference in gasoline like the way this guy does. It's actually very informative and easy to follow. Thanks a bunch!
Interesting in that when I owned my 420 SEL Mercedes my Merc mechanic { who had no vested interest in the brands } told me to stop using V-Power Shell and switch to BP 98.
Can you do a video on supermarket fuel vs branded fuel. Because I was running asda supermarket fuel and even though it was the cheapest option in my area I realised that my fuel was running out quickly in comparison to shell fuel even though I'm technically getting less fuel for my money with shell.... And also I noticed on a different occasion that after running tesco momentum 99 supermarket fuel after about three tanks my engine started to sound a bit rough, but after returning back to shell fuel my engine became much smoother again... So I know that supermarket fuel is definitely not as good as branded fuel... Would you do a video on that...?

I've gone to bed every night for my entire life wondering what the difference is between the gas numbers. I can now sleepy soundly at night. Thank you.
Just cause it days in the manual doesn't mean its true. 2007 thru 2010 have coilpack issues and spark plugs that fail prematurely when ran on 87 octane. I had 3 denso coilpacks fail at 90k. I replaced the coilpacks and put new ngk spark plugs at 90k. At 112k i had 2 more coilpacks fail and 1 spark plug fail. The honda dealership recommended that i run premium and run lucas fuel treatment. Ive been running premium for over a year now. The car runs 10x better, no lagging, also it gets 5 to 7 mpg better. Lastly some gas stations have shitty gas like bp and certified. Smh
@@honda-s2k how about other mazdas that have double your mileage and never had any of those failures by using 87? there isn't a coil issue, spark plugs last longer than the recommended 75k miles interval... i'm also skeptical about any better fuel mileage. it's not like premium gas has extra energy (i may have extra detergents but no real 'energy bust')
This is one of the rare premium quality informational videos on TH-cam. I actually felt sad when I realized the video was ending, not realizing it had been 16 minutes already. Thank you for your dedication.
In Norway we have 95E10 and 98E5. 98 is actually ethanol free in Norway, but due to EU regulations we have to label the pumps with E5. The reason why we have 98 as ethanol free is because we have a lot of older cars that usually are parked during the winter. E10 is not good for older engines, and specially if the vehicle is parked during winter. Now we are working on getting 98 into more stations, as more and more people use it.
Asia have almost the same standard, We have E20, Gasohol 91, G95 and pure 98. E20 is 98 mixes with 20% Ethanol, G91 is your E10 and G95 is your E5. I do believe that the more ethanol the less energy because ethanol have less energy that petrol.
@@MutheiM_MarzBut we only have Unleaded95 and Unleaded98. 95 has up to 10% ethanol, and 98 has no ethanol. Lots of smaller petrolstations that had 95 and diesel have switched to 98 instead, as10% ethanol is too much for older cars. My 1991 Toyota runs only on 98 octane with no ethanol added.
In my country a new petrol car usually go for E20 and G91 or 95 is for bike. Unleaded 98 is for the old car like yours. But we have another one, normal diesel and B10 which is 10% biodiesel. I have Hilux Mighty X gathering dust and daily driver Hilux Tiger. In small station they must have B10 and 91 and 98. Government start to enforcing biodiesel and Ethanol mixes fuel.

Liked the video, but for the people going to the Netherlands and probably other European countries, please note that the gas standards have changed since 2019. The Shell V-power a.k.a. premium E-5 is the regular fuel from before 2019. That means that if you're driving a car that's older than 2019 and it says to use E-10(Euro 95) choose E-5(Euro 98 / V-power or premium. so E-5(Euro98) is the old E-10(Euro95).
Yesterday I passed someone on the road. Their 1990's era Ford Mustang sounded as though it's engine was nothing but hard knocks as it drove by me. I was like, "Whoa, dude! Your engine is dead, man! You might want to just get a new engine or something, man.".
Maybe add half tank of gas, then the additive, then the final fill, ALL in one stop. Or, optionally, speed up to 100 MPH and repeatedly jam on your brakes to ensure PROPER additive mixing in the fuel tank. Then, immediately, drive to a service station to replace brakes, tires, and the pants you peed in during the repeated emergency stops.
Thank you for helping dispel myths. PS - I tried to run 87 in my Jaguar (premium required). After a year, I had to change plugs and coil packs. Switching to 92 fixed the issue.
When adding anything to your fuel, always put the additive in first. Then, when you fill the tank, the fuel additive will be dispersed evenly through the fuel. Just a good way to make sure everything is mixed thoroughly. If you do add it after fueling, I would shake the car side to side for 30 secs or so to mix it up well.

Here in germany some gasstations like "Aral" even offer 102 gasoline. It's called Aral ultimate 102, but not a single car on this planet can work with such a high number of octane. It's more about the additives it contains.
I use premium because i do not drive but maybe 150 miles a month. I use sta-bl fuel additive to save the life of fuel. I do have higher use from time to time but 80% of the time is 150 or less miles. I bough a used ford explorer in 2012 with 197686 miles for $1000. It had not been taken care of. I fixed the problems it had. Front end comletely replaced. $575 in parts. Saved $1000. Drained all the fluids including the gas tank. Changed all the belts and hoses. Cleaned the fuel system, replaced all the bosch platinum plugs and wires. Fixed intake leak in gasket. Vacvumed car and washed it. Paint was in bad shape when i bought it. I stripped the paint and repainted with primer 5 coats and 4 coats of clear coat. I did it myself. I saved $1500 new tires and bought tire covers. The vehicle by blue book is not worth but $2000. But this Explorer is in better shape than most newly boight vehicles it gets 23 mpg and 14 city. Owners manual says its duppose to get 19 hwy and 11 in city. If people would just take care of their vehicles they will last. I don't have thousand of $ in tools either. I have good tools that are good enough for the job. If my parts are stress parts a bought better quality tools for those parts. I may have a $1000 in tools $400 just for a tool box to hold them. I do all my own repar work on both my vehicles my second carcis a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan bought for $2000 cash. It needed drivers sliding door repaired. Did it myself and saved $1100 dollars in repairs. New alternator save $ 525 in repairs good qualty tires saved $1500. Shop around. Deals are out here. Had TIMP defect from factory. Repaired it saved $1400 oil pump saved $400. Both vehicles run and drive like new.
Indeed but the "why" is particularly important. Anyone can tell you something but knowing why that is true is whats important. I could tell you, if you eat dirt it is healthy for you. Sure you can go out and believe me, but if I dont tell you why, are you really learning?
You say it doesn’t increase power but you can feel the difference in power for yourself. When my 2.5L 4 cylinder Camry is overloaded for long road trip holidays I can barely get moving or up hills unless I use premium. I’ve even pushed my luck and added an octane booster with a full tank of V power premium. Runs much nicer and allows me to hummer it as I normally do. Just filled up with premium for a 2 hour trip this weekend
For those of you who want a bit more clarification about the different fuel octane ratings: PON (Pump Octane Number) = RdON (Road Octane Number) = AKI (Anti-Knock Index) = (R+M)/2 These are all the exact same octane rating you might see in the US (AKI and (R+M)/2 being the most common) which is the calculated average between RON (Research Octane Number) (used in Europe) (Performance at low speed & low temp) and MON (Motor Octane Number) (Performance at high speed & high temp). AKA (R+M)/2 (add the numbers up and divide by 2).
So much more to gas choices at the gas pumps than I ever realized. Thanks for cleaning up the myths. Feel so much more informed and empowered with this knowledge. And able to make intelligent choices now. Again thank you for sharing.

October 2024 and watched video for the first time! Love that Shell 93 V-Power in my 15' Porsche Macon helping preserve that smooth engine at 123k on the ticker!
How can Americans even complain about fuel prices, in Belgium we pay 5,7 USD a gallon at cheapest. It would be dream to buy 1 liter gas for 0,90 euros instead of 1,35.
Watching this in 2024 and I've had -different people tell me different things, but this makes the most sense of all. No one EVER told me to look for what type of fuel I should use on my gas cap or my manual. I'm a 63 year old woman and obviously clueless. lol. I do have a question, though, @ChrisFix... and hope you'll see this and answer. I've been using the mid-grade Plus fuel type. If I should've been using Regular all along, does this mean I've been causing damage to my engine? You mentioned using regular when you should use premium may cause damage, but didn't mention the opposite... for someone clueless like me, I'd love to know the answer. Appreciate the video... if enough people watch it, could be a great time to buy stock in Shell. I'll be going there or perhaps to Speedway from now on, as someone mentioned it's also great gas with additives... is that true too, @ChrisFix? Appreciate the info... I've subscribed now and plan to watch more of your videos. :-)
Using mid grade in a car that requires regular won't hurt anything, but it is extra money for almost 0 or 0 gain so you are better off switching to regular. And as long as the fuel contains the necessary additives (or more like in this case) you will be good to go!
I just want to point out one thing with the “premium recommended” point you made, before you go pumping regular, double check in the owner’s manual that there isn’t a minimum either, my gf used to have a Mini Cooper S that said “premium recommended” but also said the minimum it could run was 89 octane, so please double check and make sure there isn’t any minimum either
Ehh the mini should be run on at least 91 my dad's owned 3 and 2 Cooper S's my grandmother currently still has hers the mini engine from 2000-06 ish have really finicky motors never had anything but problems when running lower octane on my dad's old minis
Elliott Grossman I feel like my gf just had some really bad luck with hers, if I remember right I think within like a month of owning it, she had to go take it to the shop because of something with the camshaft of the engine and the belts, and then in the end she sold it because of a failed fuel pump (which I’m sure was her fault because she never listened to me when I told her to never let her car run dangerously low on gas and she had a really bad habit of doing so) and she didn’t feel like dishing out more money into it (at that point they’d spent around $6000 in repairs, all while having bought the car for $9k)
Sometimes I come back to this video, not to hear about his argument or to know what gas I should use, but to look at the prices on those pumps. Those beautiful, low prices…
There is diesel #1 and diesel #2. The difference between the 2 is they add unleaded gasoline into 1 to help keep the diesel fuel from sludging up or freezing up in very cold weather conditions.
@@collomps we've had 2 different types of diesel fuels that anyone can buy at anytime where anyone has the choice to get diesel fuel with or without unleaded gasoline added. Diesel 1 and Diesel 2.

The best fuel to run in your car these days is the one recommended by the manufacturer since your motor is tuned to run the certain OCTANE. Dont run 93 octane in your civic lx.
Your car is tuned to run on certain ethanol content????? Really dude? Ethanol is a regulation that added into the gas. Its has to be 10% and only 10% all the gas at the pump will contain this ammout. As far as flex fuel goes. The computer is able to sense the mixture its self and your able to run a 50% e85 50% gasoline. Look up what your talking about before you comment
Actually you can look up gas price history for California and they were on par with the rest of country until about 20 years ago. Californication of the US is coming to the rest of the US. Buckle up
Excellent video. So grateful where i live i can get minimum 90 octane non ethanol gas. Love running the pure gas through my car. More expensive yes. Worth it yes. Put quality fuel system cleaner in once a month and the engine just purrs on down the road.
@@StijnNLDutch yea, all gas stations have essentially the same fuel. it all comes from the same place. @@Gobi-Wan indeed, here in the Netherlands where shell is coming from, there have been many consumer programs about the additives. They put 1liter in a whole truck full of gas (the truck that brings the gas to the station’s).
This is great information, and Chris touched on additives a little bit, but I feel like he left an important part out. Yes, you do go with the gasoline octane level that your car manufacturer recommends, but some gas stations have additives added to all three levels of gasoline, and some don't. The ones that do are called 'Top tier'. I only get gas from Top tier gas stations. In the video, he's at a Shell gas station, which is a Top tier gas station, so even if you get regular gas from them, it has the additives that will keep your valves clean. You can do a search online to find out what gas stations are Top tier.

Octane Rating Tests Explained:
One more thing you didn't explain well was how we get the octane rating in the USA.

Shell costs a lot more compared to other gas stations in my area but its good to know their fuel is much better and has more additives 😊
I was told to stop using Shell V-Power 98 as it was causing major problems from additives. I was recommended to use BP 98.
BP is Not a Top Tier gas (extra cleaning additives). Shell is Top Tier.

The answer is simple:
Use the grade of gasoline recommended in your vehicle's manual.
@em745a That's a Mazda owner's secret man. Not like anyone is gonna believe you even though it's true.
Usually it will say it on your gas lid. If anyone cared.... They should read it haha. Put people don't even know how to check oil levels 😅😅
@em745a I wonder how that's gonna be with the skyactive x engine that wants to run like a diesel... might Require lower octane to run right

When adding anything to your fuel, always put the additive in first. Then, when you fill the tank, the fuel additive will be dispersed evenly through the fuel.
These are all the exact same octane rating you might see in the US (AKI and (R+M)/2 being the most common) which is the calculated average between RON (Research Octane Number) (used in Europe) (Performance at low speed & low temp) and MON (Motor Octane Number) (Performance at high speed & high temp). Using mid grade in a car that requires regular won't hurt anything, but it is extra money for almost 0 or 0 gain so you are better off switching to regular. And as long as the fuel contains the necessary additives (or more like in this case) you will be good to go!

Easy to decide when you have a diesel.. you put diesel in it!
There is diesel #1 and diesel #2. The difference between the 2 is they add unleaded gasoline into 1 to help keep the diesel fuel from sludging up or freezing up in very cold weather conditions.
What's the difference between diesel and diesel excellium ?
@@BlueDroneBlues In old Mercedes manuals you can se the chapter "adding gasoline to the diesel fuel". Thats to avoid freezing.
@@collomps we've had 2 different types of diesel fuels that anyone can buy at anytime where anyone has the choice to get diesel fuel with or without unleaded gasoline added. Diesel 1 and Diesel 2.
Unless you are like me and build bad ass DT466s. Then you’re going to need something to drop into the old funnel. Me? I prefer old cans of lacquer thinner or some high quality varvishes. Nothing supes up my cornfield caddy like 2.25 gallons of miscellaneous paint supplies from the restore.
What a video! I knew these things and I still watched till the end.
Why do I suddenly feel smart enough to go take my engine apart and inspect the valves and pistons? What world is this??

may or may not be smart enough to reassemble the engine

Holy cow, what an amazing video! The effort you put into this is super evident, great work and thank you for such useful information :)
Thanks a lot!
The best fuel to run in your car these days is the one recommended by the manufacturer since your motor is tuned to run the certain OCTANE.
Dont run 93 octane in your civic lx.
2 dicksin1pussy
Your car is tuned to run on certain ethanol content????? Really dude? Ethanol is a regulation that added into the gas. Its has to be 10% and only 10% all the gas at the pump will contain this ammout. As far as flex fuel goes. The computer is able to sense the mixture its self and your able to run a 50% e85 50% gasoline. Look up what your talking about before you comment
@@firstonracingday3407 I meant octane my guy. My bad. I'll make sure I punish myself real good for it.
After watching this video, I started pumping diesel into my Toyota Prius.
How’d that go?
Well I started an addiction to huffing it😐
Any updates?
I have an addiction to sniff the air every time a bus or truck passes by.

Shell Premium V Power : $2.90
California Drivers : I haven’t seen those prices since 1874
Paying almost $4 for premium at the Chevron near me. Under $3 would be nice.
Must be one of the reasons californians converting to texans
5.50 near me
Actually you can look up gas price history for California and they were on par with the rest of country until about 20 years ago. Californication of the US is coming to the rest of the US. Buckle up
Hell it was $1.09-$1.29 when I was 16 In Michigan.
Excellent video. So grateful where i live i can get minimum 90 octane non ethanol gas. Love running the pure gas through my car. More expensive yes. Worth it yes. Put quality fuel system cleaner in once a month and the engine just purrs on down the road.
The longest Shell ad I’ve ever seen.
Looks all modest, filming with my cell phone, low budget, then suddenly high quality computer animations. Yeah, Shell helped out more'n a little.
And the additive is bullass. Its only to sell you the most expensive gas.
@@StijnNLDutch yea, all gas stations have essentially the same fuel. it all comes from the same place.
The answer to the title: look at the owners manual.
I know the answer was simple, but i appreciated all the information he gave.
Yeah but should I use 91 or 93 octane gas for my nissan 370z? Gas station near my house doesn't have 93
