Its so nice to come across a short, concise, quality video that is straight to the point and isnt stuffed with fluff and garbage for the sake of hitting a 12 minute video mark. Thank you Rob
Keep in mind that in some cars it's quite inaccurate. My car once ran out of fuel and suddenly completely died while the fuel gauge wasn't even on E yet.
Hey Rob, I just wanted to add on what you said at 3:25 about losing brakes and steering as soon as the engine dies. While it is true that the steering will get heavier right away, the brakes won't for that exact reason. With vacuum style brake boosters, the check valve that keeps the brake booster from pulling air back in also holds vacuum in the system so that in the event of an engine failure, you still have a few pumps of assisted pedal action. Still an awesome video and something that I've wondered about myself!
It is still a lubricant for non mechanical driven fuel pumps. The older 1950's and earlier era it did not matter, as those were generally a rubber diaphragm. But the new style electric pumps need lubrication by the fuel, and even more importantly cooling from the fuel.
+Da Ca And what exactly is wrong with being gay? If you can give me 5 arguments that aren't backed by some shitty religious answer, props to you. Good luck!
That's what happens when you don't take care of your car: Your car then doesn't take care of *you*. But it's a lesson, a very expensive lesson to learn...
SI0AX if you live where there's snow you'll actually get rust from the gas tank in the ground. Or you have an older car you can't help the tank going bad over time. When you run out of gas the return line instead of spraying under the gas line it sprays above the gas and stirs up trash in the tank and makes it get sucked into the system usually there's a filter before the pump.
@@SI0AX Sometimes shit just breaks though. I blew an alternator before 40,000 miles and have always stayed on top of maintenance. Replaced it in my driveway and it ran just fine.
@@shadowthehedgehog4737 Yeah, but that should be a pretty rare occurrence with good maintenance, unless you have an unreliable car like a German vehicle, and many low quality domestic brands.
Ashish Patel Bit of an old wives tale I believe, and applies less so with modern electric fuel pumps. I've routinely let my fuel injected cars run right down near or below E (never actually died of fuel starvation) and in 18yrs and 4 totally different cars, I've never burnt out a fuel pump.
That may be your personal experience, but its still stupid to run your fuel pump dry. Its going to run hotter than when submerged in liquid regardless. Gases have worse heat transfer than liquids.
My 2009 Ford Focus had the same setup, and it would always give me weird readings, I tried to avoid looking at it. With the needle on E and 0 miles on the display, I got about 30 miles from it. It's definitely nice that there is still that safe buffer zone to get you to the next freeway exit.
Idk why some people do this. Fill your shit up at 1/4 so you always have gas in the tank and don't have to worry about getting low. It ain't that hard, gas stations are everywhere.
i ran out of gas a few times in my first car and i remember it cutting out and then roll starting itself (cuz it was a manual) and for a time that was what i used to determine when i got gas cuz i was in high school at the time and didnt have a lot of money
Distance till empty is an estimate of the max you can go before needing to find a fuel source. not distance until complete shut down. A lot of vehicles in the 1990s had a extra low fuel lamp or check gauges lamp for when the gauge showed 2 to 4 gallons left. The whole point is they are trying to do everything possible to keep people from running the vehicles out of fuel. Including the safe range they estimate you can go on the fuel left.
I've driven 36 miles on a car that said "0 miles to empty" lol. I think it has to do with the angle of the gas in the tank(the sender does float so that makes sense)
I was driving my 67 gto when i ran out of gas. Because it was a stick I left it in gear so the power steering pump was still being turned by the motor until I came to a stop. And the engine kept making vacuum so the power breaks kept working. It did come to a stop real quick due to the engine breaking. Hardest part was getting fuel to fill the float bowls on the carb. Killed the battery cranking the motor. Mechanical fuel pump.
hey Rob. You might want to add that if you do this in a direct injected car you could damage it. if it was a v6 you may have been getting a tow, the DI pump can get air in it and then you're stuck.
Pretty sure car manufacturers don't wanna risk getting sued by people because "it said I still had 1 mile left when it died, the range lied and put me in danger".
When my f150 said 0 km till empty. I had 75 km range. Tested it once. Now I know for sure no matter how I drive once it hits 0 I for sure have 50km to find some gas with a 25 km buffer. When your always broke you find these little things out.
On my 1993 Fiesta it's a bit different as I don't get a chance to know how much I've got left in the tank for miles. It's all about guessing and when it does run out, luckily I don't have power steering and brakes aren't that hard to push. When the needle is on the low end of the red, I've got 100km left in the tank.
Experienced this in my subaru...not 2 weeks after getting her...turns out there's no gas stations open between Ottawa and Northbay (butt fuck nowhere) at 2am...though I made it close enough to my destination call a buddy to bring me a jerry can.
It's most likely to compensate for uncertainty with the fuel level sensor, since it can never be a 100% accurate with the gas moving around while driving
GM didn't give you any grace period intentially. The range to empty is an approximation based on the average fuel economy and how much fuel is left in the tank. Actual fuel economy may not match average fuel economy over those last bits of fuel, and thus you get a range. I owned a CTS-V just like in this video, and saw anywhere from 40 to 100 miles to E when the low fuel market comes on at 50 miles to E.
reason why is back in the day gm offered free road side assistance and they got tired of people running our of gas so they added just enough to get you to a gas station
Maxwelhse well no shit. Think about the amount of fuel that is laying flat in the tank that isn't enough to lift the fuel level gauge, then what's in the lines and then what's, and then just before the injectors that's a decent amount of unaccounted fuel.
just a little tidbit about gas range, if it's summertime and it's really hot outside the sensor shows more range than you actually get. I once ran out of gas on my motorbike even though it said it had 15 more kilometers to go.
Some do, some don't. My car runs out between 13 and 63 mi to empty (3 times! Will never happen again). Plus, its direct injection, it abruptly runs out. No sputter, no re start.
When your engine dies you don't run out of power assist you have about 1-4 stops for the brakes and a couple steering wheel movements before your accumulator which stores extra fluid runs out.
I ran out of gas in a Toyota Sequoia 3 times. Twice we beat the range by about 20-30 miles and then one time we ran out 5 miles before the range said, which was extremely surprising since we had just got off the highway.
well if you think about it, if you add any extra weight to the car other than the single person the company probably calculated for, its probably not accurate
well with old cars, when the light came on that meant you have about one gallon left. so what ever millage your car got was how many you could go before it ran out.
You actually don't lose brake booster vacuum immediately. There is enough reserve for a few good stabs of the brakes before it goes to fully manual actuation.
Your car's fuel economy system assumes you won't be foolish enough to run the sump (fuel) pump dry. there's a liter or two in the fuel lines between the tank and engine, but running your lines dry will cause damage to your car. This is where that extra ~20 miles comes from.

dont steal spaghetti's sauce.
I can't wait for the RX7 start up

Haha love the captions in the animation "Fuck" haha!
For sake of your fuel pump try not to do this. Your fuel is a lubricant for many moving parts of your car's fuel system.
Not for gasoline I think, I know that diesel acts as a lubricant but I'm not sure for gasoline...
At least it keeps the pump cool.
It is still a lubricant for non mechanical driven fuel pumps. The older 1950's and earlier era it did not matter, as those were generally a rubber diaphragm. But the new style electric pumps need lubrication by the fuel, and even more importantly cooling from the fuel.
Well there's nothing else to lubricate it so you could expect that.
OK, the more you know I guess ^^
Could have mentioned to never try and start a car that's out of fuel. You might blow out the fuel pump.
kounga leblanc if you do it for a long time or it's an old car with an old pump can damage it but if it's a newer car you'll probably be fine.

Btw running out of gas messes with the fuel pump. You should never let it get to the "e" it burns out the bearings in the pump.
Not true.
The fuel in the tank helps cool and lubricate the pump, but running out once isn't going to hurt it.
