My favorite Scelsi piece! thanks for sharing
Does anyone know if the name is referring to the Okanagan/Okanogan valley in central BC/Washinton state?
Hard to say, good question! Thanks for your interesting! 🎶
I've looked into this and can't find anything definitive. According to Scelsi, the similarly titled 'maknongan" has its inspirations from Philippines folklore. I know at this time in his music he was inspired by ancient spiritual beliefs, rituals and stories from around the world (Egyptian, Greek, Indian subcontinent) so I wouldn't be surprised if he was inspired by the Okanagan creation stories or other Native American stories/ideas. According to Sclelsi, he said the piece was supposed to represent the heart beat of the earth, and I know the Okanagan creation stories see the earth as a living being, so that lines up to some degree.
