Honestly Joel, this is probably the only channel on YT I can sit and watch the entire video without skipping. That 2 hour video a few weeks ago felt like 20min. Great work man
Major respect for you to be able to build a engine like this bro. Your car will feel wayyy more intimate now that you’ve opened her up, don’t stick your weewee in it tho
Yeah, it's his second engine in this car. So he's definitely done this before, good part is he actually has a shop that he can do this in, instead of a tiny garage
@@XidiasThat engine wont last 10 000miles🙏 Its gonna blow up. I guarantee... There is more to building en engine that in stock form made 250hp and now push it towards 700hp...Yes bmw could make 1200hp on its M12/13 a 1500cc 4cylinder but it would last 3laps...Its pure cliche😂
Glad to be following your project. Pay close attention to the turbo (exhaust side) being so close to the valve cover as it is made of plastic as you knwon. They are prone to crack over the years and the additional heat from the turbo and exhaust pipe on the area might reduce the lifetime of it or start to melt. Keep it up.
he has a metal one (m56), hes just using this for the start up (as he will re torque the headbolts after the first run) believe this one is cracked at the back.
@@kujtek bruh yeah idk y I said m56 yesterday, he has this metal cover thing covering the plastic valve cover on the exhaust side. That what I meant. Mb. Also believe he has another one or getting one but using the old one for now.
Dude, I can't tell you how much I actually appreciate the detail you leave in these videos Joel. Everyone skips over so much and packs in their vids and these are just *chefs kiss*. Please keep doing it this way. Need more car youtubers like you that actually tell us how to do it, mistakes and all. Mad respect.
nice work Joel! quick tip for pouring something out of such a dumb container like the degreaser in the beginning: if you rotate it 180 degrees so that the nozzle is on top it should flow out easily without running down the side. of course, as it gets empty you won't have this problem and can pour it normally but it's a good trick if you have a new, full one.
Joel I love these videos man you do a great job, the transparency you have with showing your mistakes is awesome too. Most of the car videos on TH-cam just jump cut to stuff being installed and pretend like there are no hiccups. Its inspiring seeing you do all this stuff on your own on a budget, makes it feel like its possible for me to do the same one day
The pilot bearing trick is use a small bolt and nut that will barely fit and turn it slowly with a wedge on the opposite side. Take your time and go evenly on both sides. It will come out. A actual pilot bearing puller is nothing more the a metal sleeve with a bolt in it. You can jerry rig one yourself.
Next time if you do not have drilling fluid for your drills and taps , just use pork fat ...we use it in a shop on a lathe all the time , works same as the aftermarket one
Thanks to your video I've been reminded I need to order a new pivot pin retainer clip asap. Thanks! On the topic of clutch install - be very careful with your grease application! PO of my car packed the pilot bearing hole with grease which quickly spread over the entire flywheel and clutch disk resulting in sadness and disappointment...
Why on EARTH would you use a $15 amazon Chinese crank sensor? That's the most important sensor on the entire engine. I guess you need to use the front sensor location because it's not an m52 block? If you're going to use that sensor location you need to check/set base timing on the ecu. Mark your timing marks, get a timing light, warm up the engine and set ignition lock to 0.25 deg and verify it with the light.
The funniest builder by far. I watch with my head turned sideways because I dont know whats going to happen next. Lol. Also when mixing bolts, make sure they are equal in quantity because if you only switch out one which is different in design, cause might be they are different in weight which might throw the balance off.
SICKKK!!!!!!!!! Glad everything started up just fine sounded like it was happy super happy for you man cant wait for the first drive video thats gonna be awesome
Bro good call on the torque wrench oil filter cover. I've accidentally snapped a bolt because I thought I set it correctly and I didn't. Also trust your instincts. I thought it felt like a lot and keep going .... Fml
I’m about to start up my m50 turbo next week. I had planned on running a gt35r extremely wastegated turbo but I wasn’t happy with the fit in a bottom mount application so now I’m waiting on a gt3076 internally gated turbo
Great content. Was able to sit and watch from start to finish. Watching you gives me confidence to turbo my own e30. I'll be rolling with the m20 engine for now until I build and swap another later down the road. Goodluck! waiting for the next video
Uhmm.. 🔥🔥 Great job!! I waited for that video :) Good work with editing videos for that long (1 hour) and brought this video to us. 💪 And I'm brave to see that you are happy and.. makes us happy too + sharing ur own experiences and stuffs with us. 🙂 You rebuilded the engine and this engine first startup sounded so great! 🔥 I know we all have to slow down for a minute and not rush. And I saw that oil pump there with old oil. But ya, waitin for next video! 👋
Mineral spirits will clean out oil well. We used it in our oil trucks to clean up and separate oil. I don't think it will ruin as nothing unless there it a bunch left in the engine. Flush the motor with cheap oil then put in you oil you will leave in it.
Forgot how funny these videos were.. I Havent watched in a while but im excited to see how much power you'll put into it (if you decide to put more) also excited for some doordash videos
I just deleted the black spider pipe /coolant pipe. No real reason to run it. Just need a few Barbed t's for a regular hose (I cut the ends off of m52 hoses ) Also I like to use a paint marker on my twin disc for disassembly. Flywheel bolts are a certain length and one time use.
When you pour the spirits from the can, turn it sideways, not from the corner. You should get a better result =D Looking forward to seeing this doing some doordash again ;-)
Love your videos Joel! I'm slowly stacking up parts to do a turbo build on my M54, you're inspiring me to document the process once I start building it :)
Sounds nice and healthy but dump that oil at least a couple of times from the mistakes 😉 as you want to remove any last remnant’s of that degreaser stuff through there 🤔🙌
HF has a cheap sliding hammer with some attachments you can slide inside the pilot hole. i tried the toilet paper thing once and didn't have enough patience for it lol p.s. her water broke at the end lol
Hey! I absolutely love your videos! I am buying an e30 318i tomorrow and hoping to swap the engine. Ive been watching all of your engine building videos all the way through! May I ask how you learned all of this stuff? I am a pretty quick learner when it comes to most things, but something about cars intimidates me! Did you gradually build up to it or work with a garage? Or just jump into it and google things when you got stuck? You seem to have a ton of knowledge and a great ability to figure out what needs to be done next! Respect! And thank you!
Honestly Joel, this is probably the only channel on YT I can sit and watch the entire video without skipping. That 2 hour video a few weeks ago felt like 20min. Great work man
thinking the same exact thing. good work joel. so entertaining!
YUP 👍
Same. That's a crazy thought. I usually skip around so much but not with these.

Quick tip for welding nuts and bungs onto stuff is keep a bolt or plug threaded into the nut so that the threads don’t deform with heat. 👍🏻

longer vids > shorter vids

I was about to comment the same thing he’s the first person I’ve seen do that edit it’s satisfying lol
The same torque wrench is from harbor freight right ?

when you have a container like the mineral spirits one where the hole is offset pour it on it's side with the hole up, a lot less spillage
Proud to see it runninng
Was hoping to see the transmission go on like in the e46 wagon video 👀 but this is still sick, good shit bro !
Always pour the opposite side of the lid, so there’s no air. This will prevent for spilling all over the floor
