- Ever noticed Greenland showing as 'No Data' on world maps? In this video, I explore the surprising reasons behind this phenomenon and uncover the truth about Greenland's mysterious map color.

Imagine he just says: well we can’t get the answer as I have not been able to get data about Greenland
😂😂😂
I find it so bizarre that greenland is a part of Denmark and Denmark is in the EU but Greenland isn't a part of the EU.
This feels like if West Virginia decided to leave NATO
So true🤣
*Denmark, please
When the UK was in the EU, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey were outside as well.
@@troelspeterroland6998ya territories aren't in the EU but overseas regions like French Guyanna is. It all depends on what the member state considers it's land vs it's territory
Greenland, Faroe Islands and Denmark are all 3 part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The Kingdom of Denmark ≠ Denmark.
They are separate entities. Greenland and Faroe Islands are autonomous countries just like Denmark, but they are all apart of the same kingdom
Probably because they close down their seaport the second someone coughs.
@@Kawaiitwo Love that reference 😄
underrated as hell
@@eazyaviation Thank you so much!
4:40 European countries: Hey look at that beautiful autonomous region I got.
*Laughs in Spanish*
In Spain it is basically the administrative division of the entire country
🇬🇱 It has even its own emoji!
*it even has
@@lochlanmuir2291Their phrase isn't incorrect. They're just different tones conveyed.
@@wolfxlovernobody would ever say it like that.
@@deathrowlemon7367well someone just did you dip
@@wolfxlover no, it's straight up grammatically incorrect, there's no justification here
now if it said something along the lines of “it has even _gotten_ its own emoji” then it'd be valid
I think the visual size of Greenland (particular when it's exaggerated by some map projections) and the majority of the area is just ice, means that even if the data is available (either separately or the data for Denmark also applies) painting that whole area on a map might be somewhat visually misleading or not visible on the scale used anyway if the data is something population related per square kilometer. I.e. you'd end up having to either paint the whole of Greenland as having a something population related density of 0 if you the data doesn't show less than 1 digit per square kilometer which is somewhat insulting and just as meaningless as painting it with "no data" or if you decide to use the ceiling function to round it up to 1 per square kilometer, not only doesn't it say much when most other regions on the map have much higher number, but you've also overestimated the population by doing so by almost 2 million.
Loved the "Is that Greenland?" map
I didn't realize all of Spain's subdivisions are considered autonomous regions. Interesting
give this man recognition! terrific work!
Even Google Street View reached Greenland, so why not statistics
I suspect that most of these "data maps" you see are made by combining a data source that maps country codes to data with a base map that maps country codes to shapes on the map.
I therefore suspect that different standards for what constitues a "country" between the people collating the data and the people making the map then leads to "no data" on the map.
bro, this dude is underrated GIVE THIS MAN MORE VIEWS!!! MORE SUBS!!!
NGL I WAS SURPRISED WHEN I SAW THE SUB AND VIEW COUNT, THIS MAN DESERVES MOREE!!!!!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
I never thought anyone would make this video
Interesting.. Good work . Please continue to make same concept videos
Also for a lot of countries it makes sense to include the autonomous regions into the rest of the statistics data of the country
Be it because of geographical proximity, it being a national statistic (say, for average number of languages spoken by people, you'd include the Basque Country and Catalonia to get the national average for Spain)
But Greenland being on a different country and having virtually no cultural connection to Denmark it wouldn't make sense to include them in most maps about Denmark, nor to extrapolate Denmark's data to Greenland. (The former because it would significantly alter Denmark's data, the ladder because Denmark's and Greenland's data would likely not be the same or similar)
I mean, in Spain all of the regions are autonomous, not just those two
@@DonPedroman But they have the biggest degree (specially in terms of Language since they are allowed to teach Catalan and Basque)
Damn I really forgot that trump tried to buy Greenland lmao
really nice breakdown.
only thing you should have added when talking about its size on the map is that the size is also inflated (Greenland _is_ big, but it appears _even bigger_ in common projections)
oh, and just out of curiosity (i hope you don't mind me asking, feel free to ignore): do you happen to be from the Caucasus region or something? thought i noticed something in your accent there (i'm a big linguistics nerd)
@@fariesz6786 So true, thank you very much for your comment!
My favourite map projection is Robinson, so Greenland looks somewhat normal sized there. It makes no sense for Greenland to be as big as Africa 😂
Also, nope I am not from the Caucasus region 😄
I saw some suicide rate maps that had Greenland not many other maps that have Greenland sadly it’s just there rates being the worst in the world. On top of that they plan to be fully independent by 2030 so that should put them on more maps for data when it comes to maps listing every UN member and such.
I mean...no surprises, we know for quite some time that living so far north isnt good for physical or mental health.
@@alexturnbackthearmy1907 you’d be surprised how many people don’t know that about Greenland 🇬🇱
I must recommend "The First Crossing of Greenland" by F. Nansen, as an excellent summer beach read.

BRUH, MOST OF CANADA IS UNINHABITABLE AND CANADA HAS THE NORTH POLE! WHY IS IT NOT MOSTLY NO DATA!
it’s independent, and it has millions of people
@@Snow.-1000 key word, most.
Because the territories aren't autonomous regions.
Bc it’s a country with millions of people, most of which are clustered on the border between Canada and the US
@@theresa.y5221not even most the uninhabitable parts are extremely North, like northern islands north
So it is basically that they do have data but map makers just don't know how to get it. Or somehow it's more preferred to not show any data on it by the big eu and un committies ?
4:48 Spain is literally 100% autonomous regions, is that true?
It kind of is. Every region in Spain is called an autonomous community, but in practice, the level of autonomy they get is not really massively high, and definitely less than what they'd get in federal states such as Germany. So it's more of a semantics trick than an actual autonomous state like Greenland.
I’ve always wondered this! I’d love to see a follow-up video about why New Zealand is flat out missing on so many maps, as that’s another cartographic mystery!
OH MY GOSH! NEW VIDEO FROM MY FAV TH-camR! THE BEST 5 MIN I HAD!
If i were the one who made the maps i would put Greenland data the same as Denmark because Greenland is part of Denmark
They address that
As a Dane, I can safely say that doing this would lead to horrific consequences as Greenland's own data would be drowned out. Denmark might be small but 6 million Danes is gigantic next to 56.000 Greenlanders. Greenland is ethnically and culturally different, their climate is totally different and so are their laws and social dynamics. It IS a different country and some map makers being absurdly lazy isn't a reason to screw them over.
@@Zinras I don't agree

N-No Data? Just mark It as Denmark
In a lot of maps it would make no sense to use Denmark's data for Greenland
@@nathanwaterser8218 It will It’s their colony
@@gamer-adi9837Maybe in geopolitical maps but if it's a map like "most people per kilometre" and you're counting Greenland's avg towards Denmarks, then it wouldn't work on Greenlands population density is much more sparse than that of Denmark.

All of Spain is an autonomous region?
Exactly! 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities
@@GeopoliticsExplainer Note, however, that Spain's autonomous regions are so mostly in name. They definitely have a degree of autonomy, but it's noticeably smaller than what you'd get in federal states such as Germany or Switzerland, and way less than what Greenland gets. Thus it's a bit unfair to compare these directly.
@@n4d13LOLZ AFAIK, a lot of Spanish regions like to say they're autonomous when they're really not. As some have said, Spain is a number of distinct cultural regions smushed together and forced to get along, some with more success than others.
