Malaysia makes a lot of sense as being “very average” because it’s a mix of three different cultural spheres in Asia: Malay, Chinese, and Indian. It’s a very religiously and culturally diverse country with both large metropolitan areas (like the capital Kuala Lumpur) and vast swathes of wilderness (the rainforests of Borneo). Additionally, its economy is newly industrialized, meaning that it’s well developed compared to other countries in Southeast Asia but it still lags behind most of the West. And like much of the world, it’s a former English colony and a large portion of its population knows English as a second language.

I was a bit confused halfway through since in my country of Denmark we don’t call a median average. We just call it median. Average only means mean average. IMO the first mean average is the one to be used for this video
I can't believe you actually suggested using a logarithmic scale for determining how close a parameter is to the mean. A much more sensible way to find the most average country is to calculate how many standard deviations from the mean each country is across each domain and find the country where the sum of the standard deviations is closest to 0.

Listening to all the stories happening from like every different countries, i, a malaysian, thought huh, my country must be the most average country in the world, and this videos showed me that i was not far off.
I haven’t watched the video yet but I find it hard to believe that a small country could be on 2 different continents depending on who you ask, has a Capital City below sea level, a significantly large exclave, is named after an ethnic group that mostly resides in a neighbouring country and has the worlds largest KFC could be anything but average. But still, I haven’t watched the video yet so idk
Now what's the most forgotten country? I could list a few countries that people forget about: Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Malawi, Brunei, Macau, East Timor
Ultimate big brain: The average country would be the median country in the ranking of median because the most average person would have things about him that are not average
Real talk: I looked at the title, thought about it, and said "the answer has to be Azerbaijan, or maybe Paraguay." *Bam!* I didn't think of Jordan or Tunisia though, because I was thinking their weird population density issues may skew things.
As a Tunisian, I understand how we are placed the second on how average our country is, due to us being so irrelevant, especially when people think that Tunisia is Indonesia
The interesting thing is that a median person in the world does not live in a median country as there are many more people living in powerful countries.
Really interesting video, however I do have 2 issues with how the formulas were created. There is no set way to do this so your way I will *not* say is "wrong", but it suffers from a high importance granted to GDP, and that the closest and furthest countries to the median are around 200x different, even second closest to closest is 3x different. With the GDP I would have averaged them, and they would have had the same weight as the other parameters. The different parts of GDP aren't unimportant but they don't deserve to each have the same weight as clearly different qualities such as size and population. With the balance of scoring I think if you used a log of the distance, it makes the closest and furthest a difference of 6.6x rather than 200x and so any single outlier doesn't affect the rest as much. A country that is super average for 4/5 parameters shouldn't be entirely obliterated because the 5th is substantially off. Countries that are very average will still be the most average, but it's less punishing to be away from the average. Good video
Definitely a fair comment. I think reasons like these are why I multiplied the ratios to the arithmetic mean instead of adding them, and why I included the reduced set of 5 stats. It may not have fully addressed the issue though.
Different variables are better suited for different means (maybe for another video), besides the difference in what you want to emphasize between mean and median.
For the means, did you look if there where any outliers for any of the measurements? Since the mean can be skewed by outliers, it would be relevant. Also maybe it would have been better to use the z-score for ranking the countries based on mean, although I’m not sure if that would change the results.
Niue is often an outlier since it's just so small (less than 2,000 people vs ~10,000 for the next few smallest). Most of the distributions are closer to an exponential than a normal, so not sure how useful Z-scores would be. I did try a log transform (and a Box-Cox transform) on the data in the same analysis that got me the North Korea result. I might make a bonus vid about that if enough people want to see it.

I think you could have done with using positive scores for countries above 99.5 and negative for countries below
Very interesting idea i like it
As an Azerbaijanian I never thought that my home country would be average, happy I learned that, also loved the anthem at the end
I really liked the idea of video thanks a lot for that information.
You're welcome!
If I’m average citizen then I might be the most average person in the world (I’m Azerbaijani)
Hey, that's pretty cool!
@@SignoreGalileimost average person is half Indian half Chinese living in Tokyo named Mohammad Li 😊😅
I was thinking this a geogusser video
Nah. Geoguessr is pretty fun though
Now what's the most forgotten country? I could list a few countries that people forget about: Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Malawi, Brunei, Macau, East Timor
Hello. I am Azerbaijani. And I am happy that there are some people research my country.
Ultimate big brain: The average country would be the median country in the ranking of median because the most average person would have things about him that are not average
Wasn't expecting my county to be the most average
American exceptionalism is real, USA USA 🇺🇸
Definitely not average!
Real talk: I looked at the title, thought about it, and said "the answer has to be Azerbaijan, or maybe Paraguay."
*Bam!* I didn't think of Jordan or Tunisia though, because I was thinking their weird population density issues may skew things.
"I found why North Korea is mathematically the most bizarre country on Earth" well I mean I don't think you needed math to prove that
Loved it!
Bro just explained Mathematica medians
respect this man for using the Azerbaijani Anthem in the outro🤣🤣
Thanks haha
As a Tunisian, I understand how we are placed the second on how average our country is, due to us being so irrelevant, especially when people think that Tunisia is Indonesia
its not about being irrelevant, its about being average
The interesting thing is that a median person in the world does not live in a median country as there are many more people living in powerful countries.
You think azerbaijan is average til you hear the banger of an anthem
When bro said north korea, i thought this was a real life lore video
I wish you also showed what was the median country in the scores list for median countries 😅
good content
Absolute banger vid
Thanks so much, glad you liked the vid!
I think Poland is the most average. It has decent size, population, history, football team, culture, food, GDP per capita and HDI.
Greetings from Azerbaijan 🇦🇿
As an Azerbaijani i even look half European half Asian
I like how Colombia seems to be the winner in the comments.
bro be calling people mid
Different variables are better suited for different means (maybe for another video), besides the difference in what you want to emphasize between mean and median.
This video is so interesting
Thanks!
The countries that immediately came to mind for me were: Slovenia, Senegal, Argentina, and Malaysia. 🇸🇮🇸🇳🇦🇷🇲🇾
Well Malaysia at least is featured in the video. Feel free to check the spreadsheet to see where the others fit in.
Slovenia? They are quite too developed to be considered as the average country
Not Slovakia, Spanish Speaking Italians, and Kacang Masin Land too rich.
Senegal far too poor.
@@lontongstroong Argentina? Rich? About 60% of the whole population has poor conditions of living
@@cantrusthestory Still way higher than the global average
Tunisia its good to see you not last
I like the style of your videos a lot.
Thanks, glad you like it!
You could exclude population and weigh other values by population to get idea of an average citizen (If I math correctly)
Good video
Thanks!
Wtf i guessed on colombia (my country) before watching the video
I can't believe it's actually here
Like, average size, average economy, spanish speaking, catholic, plays football, right wing, average population, average density
You cant be more average 😭
Azerbaijan is more average
