    I like the idea of Colombia being the most average because the official language is one of the most spoken on earth, their religion is largest denomination of the largest religion, and they're ethnically diverse as well. Even their government is average, being on the fence between flawed democracy and hybrid regime.

    Broooo as a Colombian, I've always described my country as "Earth's middle class" basically
    We're not Sierra Leone or Haiti levels of poor, we're not rich like Germany or Japan either. We're not a big or small country. We're developed in some areas and underdeveloped in others. I've always felt like in every statistic we lie somewhere between 37th and 80th place. We have decent enough protections and freedoms, but the government does shady shit all the time. We're mostly conservative, but a very good amount of the country is quite liberal and progressive. We're not in constant economic turmoil, but never doing great either.
    We're VERY average

    Looking at the FIFA rankings (football being the most popular sport) we have 210 countries and the average is a hypothetical 105.5th position. Kosovo is 105th and Guatemala is 106th. But of the countries mentioned in this video, we have Thailand at 100th and Azerbaijan at 111th. Both equally close to 105.5.
    So congrats again Thailand and Azerbaijan, you are also average at the most average sport.

    Malaysia makes a lot of sense as being “very average” because it’s a mix of three different cultural spheres in Asia: Malay, Chinese, and Indian. It’s a very religiously and culturally diverse country with both large metropolitan areas (like the capital Kuala Lumpur) and vast swathes of wilderness (the rainforests of Borneo). Additionally, its economy is newly industrialized, meaning that it’s well developed compared to other countries in Southeast Asia but it still lags behind most of the West. And like much of the world, it’s a former English colony and a large portion of its population knows English as a second language.

    Azerbaijani here.
    The thing is we are also really close to the middle of the world map.
    But if Azerbaijan is the average country on earth, it is a little bit sad. As any Eastern European country, our youth relocate to Europe to study and work there. Society is not that open to experience new things, etc.
    The thing is Azerbaijan will give you just enough opportunities to leave the country but not enough to make a great living in here.
    Besides, our passport is also a bit problematic. Going through all that visa hurdle…Complete bummer.

    • @SignoreGalilei
      @SignoreGalilei  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      Yeah. I've heard those kinds of problems are fairly common in so-called "middle income countries" - you don't have the same kind of extreme poverty as the poorest countries, but you also don't have the opportunity of the wealthiest.

    lol I'm Venezuelan and I immediately guessed "It 100% HAS to be Colombia" before I even clicked on the video. It just makes intuitive sense not just in terms of the types of statistics you used in your analysis, but also culturally, ethnically, religiously, economically, and even geopolitically. I would also venture to guess that most Latin Americans would comfortably and intuitively call Colombia the most average Latin American country without even thinking much about the question. I think the only major ways in which it isn't average would be in how young of a nation it is ("Colombia" as an idea is only about 200 years old, and even the bulk of the people who live there have only been there for ~500 years or so) and how biodiverse it is (#1 in the world by various metrics).

    Having been to Tunisia, I like the idea of it as an average country. It’s a country that really feels like it’s between two worlds. It’s got some beauty to it but mostly it’s things other countries also have. It’s middle income. It’s culturally pretty mixed. It seems about right.

    I can't believe you actually suggested using a logarithmic scale for determining how close a parameter is to the mean. A much more sensible way to find the most average country is to calculate how many standard deviations from the mean each country is across each domain and find the country where the sum of the standard deviations is closest to 0.

    Really interesting video, however I do have 2 issues with how the formulas were created. There is no set way to do this so your way I will *not* say is "wrong", but it suffers from a high importance granted to GDP, and that the closest and furthest countries to the median are around 200x different, even second closest to closest is 3x different.
    With the GDP I would have averaged them, and they would have had the same weight as the other parameters. The different parts of GDP aren't unimportant but they don't deserve to each have the same weight as clearly different qualities such as size and population.
    With the balance of scoring I think if you used a log of the distance, it makes the closest and furthest a difference of 6.6x rather than 200x and so any single outlier doesn't affect the rest as much. A country that is super average for 4/5 parameters shouldn't be entirely obliterated because the 5th is substantially off. Countries that are very average will still be the most average, but it's less punishing to be away from the average.
    Good video

    • @SignoreGalilei
      @SignoreGalilei  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely a fair comment. I think reasons like these are why I multiplied the ratios to the arithmetic mean instead of adding them, and why I included the reduced set of 5 stats. It may not have fully addressed the issue though.

    For the means, did you look if there where any outliers for any of the measurements? Since the mean can be skewed by outliers, it would be relevant. Also maybe it would have been better to use the z-score for ranking the countries based on mean, although I’m not sure if that would change the results.

    • @SignoreGalilei
      @SignoreGalilei  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Niue is often an outlier since it's just so small (less than 2,000 people vs ~10,000 for the next few smallest). Most of the distributions are closer to an exponential than a normal, so not sure how useful Z-scores would be. I did try a log transform (and a Box-Cox transform) on the data in the same analysis that got me the North Korea result. I might make a bonus vid about that if enough people want to see it.
