Cafe Hon did quite well after the episode. Denise retired and sold the business in 2022. One of the few restaurants that did well after nightmares.
Probably because she didn’t like Gordon’s changes but she was hiding behind retirement child
@@DEC19775 Her restaurant survived for so long compared to most restaurants in Kitchen Nightmares. She obviously likes Gordon's changes.

Copyrights should not be issued for colloquialisms. The fact that she was able to trademark the word “hon” is absurd.
Copyright wouldn't be involved, its just trademark law; she was probably the first to officially register the trademark in the domains of catering and clothing, but if it actually went to court the other party would easily be able to show prior use. Basically her trademark doesn't cover what she thinks it does, at most she would be able to protect "hon" written in a particular colour and/or font.
@@WolfbloodJakeWilliams Kind of how Taylor Swift trademarked '1989' and 'This sick beat'?
WORD!
@@HighSierra1500 If you are in a store wanting to buy her 1989 album you don't want to buy it just to get home and find out it's not actually her album. That's what trademark is for. You can use '1989' for anything other than to scam her fans.

I think if she just trademarked "Cafe Hon" and not just "Hon", the city of Baltimore would've understood.
Eh, another comment says the biggest issue with the trademark was a small souvenir stand that had cafe hon merch BEFORE she opened the restaurant, then when she opened it and made her own merch with the name, eventually sends the souvenir shop the cease and desist. Eventually the souvenir shop had to shut down and she basically said she didnt care, then the newspapers ran an article with her comments and THATS what made Baltimore hate her so. She put someone out of business with a name she basically stole but trademarked first
@@littlemissunoriginal4337 - can't really blame her for that one. If you don't trademark your idea before someone else, then you're at risk. This has happened all through history. How many knows Antonio Meucci, who probably deserved credit for inventing the telephone, over Alexander Graham Bell?
@@arcadion448 You're not wrong, but there could've been a partnership between the two, especially since she got the idea for the name Cafe Hon from the souvenir shop.
Maybe but the food still would have sucked
I was thinking this the WHOLE time. If she stopped there it would have been different
Anyone else notice her non apology? The good old, "I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.' approach.
"I was just doing what business people do." "It's just a word." "I'm sorry for the animosity and the hatred."
I'm glad she figured out how to rein it in enough to save the business but I doubt she changed all that much behind the scene.
I was just thinking about this, that apology is very cringeworthy...
39:34 I do not believe a word she said.
A truly despicable person. CON. NOH. We get it. It's shameful.
its like with criminals that cry in jail, they cry because they are caught and not for what they've done. She cries because she got punished by the community and lost money, so she cries
When Gordon, after the meeting with the citizens, said that it was though in there and she went "There was so much hate directed in my direction." I wanted to scream.
What a narcissist.
Getting mad because the person she made angry is now angry and not because of what she did to deserve it...
Gordon smelled her bs out immediately 😂
She’s actually certified crazy as they come. I detest people who give a backhand
apology, I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. No I don’t accept that at all, you know you hurt my feeling and that’s not an apology or taking responsibility for your actions..I’m sorry I hurt your feeling……..
Chef Ramsey should
Don't bullshit the bullshiter
Indeed lol
I was wondering how much of the actual story they would tell. I read about Denise and Cafe Hon in a newspaper in Illinois back in the 90s when the whole Hon debacle happened. Her restaurant was never a success in the beginning. She was a successful caterer that deicded to open a restaurant. She saw the name wasnt trademarked after seeing it on several items at a souvenir stand at a high traffic area for tourists. Immediately after trademarking it she made all of the same items that were selling at the souvenir stand. Then went to the souvenir stand which was just a simple one person business that was barely making it and had her lawyer threaten them by sending a cease and desist letter. The souvenir stand went to the newspaper and the city blew up at her. She could have apologized for it and let it go but instead she acted just like she first did with Gordon. She refused to admit what she did was wrong and would not let up on the souvenir stand. It got really bad for her when the souvenir stand had to close and she basically said she didnt care and was not backing off her trademark. The newspaper ran the story again with her quotes after the souvenir stand closed and Baltimore absolutely hated her after it all. That is pretty much the whole story or what I remember of it from 30 years ago.
You're right. I'm from Baltimore

I love that the production team maintained the essence of the restaurant with the renos and Gordon did with the menu. The flamingos and the pink decor was a nice, thoughtful touch. One of my favourite revamps.
This was the only revamp I didn't like. I love that there are so many different ways to view anything. LOL.
I can't help feeling that if Gordon had walked in and saw the flamingo chandelier for the first time, he would have thought it hideous.
I think my fav revamp was the place with all the greenery and the plants that were hanging from the ceiling. I can't remember the name of it but it was the place with the host guy and the sweaty armpits LOL. But yeah that revamp was good

I am floored that any attorney would have successfully trademarked a colloquialism used by users of the English language. I really don't get that.
No for real, everyone is talking about how rude it is that she did it (which yeah, agreed) but tbh I'm more impressed that she was even able to get the trademark in the first place lol.

1. Good people have fallen on hard times and have lost the spark and the passion.
2. Narcissists that should have gone to therapy YEARS ago.
I think we know which one Denise is.
the word HUN is NOT exclusive to Baltimore , we use in Australia and have done so since i was a kid .... I'm 61 now.
They didn't say it was exclusive to Baltimore. It is a universal nickname which is short for honey.
The south uses it a lot
I have to say though I'm still confused how she got a single word like that trademarked and get legal standing.
Imagine Apple going after everything that has "Apple" in their name, so weird.
I would also like to note though that anybody could write a cease and desist. You don't need a lawyer to draw that up.

Apple has been doing that actually. They've went after people who use apples
Apple isn't an informal word, whereas hon is.
She may have gotten the trademark for restaurant names only, but then c&d’d people who wouldn’t be affected by that to bully them out of business anyway
Hon is a partial word. Part of Honey. Really was surprized the big outdoor flamingo stayed. So gaudy.
“Execute order 86”
If she's going to sue anyone that uses the word Hon, then she's going to have to sue a lot of judges because that's what they use as the abbreviation for "Honorable."

I love Gordon Ramsay of how he tackles the difficult situations he meets and bring out the joy in the staff to work in a better environment. 800 Dollars worth of food wasted...crazy
That's a lot in my currency

At first I hated her and really wished the restaurant would go down. But honestly it took guts to go on TV and say and do what she did. I forgive her for being a b**ch. Hope she does well.
She was retired last year, and closed the restaurant. But the restaurant survived for a really long time, and that's really good !

This is the favorite episode I've watched so far. Something similar happened in the gardening community when a family trademarked the words "homestead," "homesteader," "homesteading," and "urban homesteading." In fact, they trademarked about 20 commonly used gardening words and started sending out C&D letters, forced people to take down established websites and even take books off of shelves. The problem was, they did this to the wrong person, a lawyer who was determined to defeat them. The whole gardening community got behind him and financed his lawsuit. He won! The trademark office cancelled all of his trademarks. Then there was Mark Zuckerberg, who tried to trademark the words "face" and "book." Talk about an uproar from the internet community! He got knocked down too. Just don't be an asshole in pursuit of profit and you'll be fine.
The fact that she was switching between crying and not crying so quickly during her "apology" makes me not believe a single word of it. Plus, people like her are never that easily changed. I'm glad she changed enough for the business to do well though
