- Sushi-Ko? Sushi-NO!
Season 3, Episode 12
Gordon is at Sushi Ko in California. Owner Akira was a successful sushi chef at someone else's restaurant so he and his wife Lisa decided to branch out on their own. When they started, business was booming but it soon slowed down. They're losing up to $20,000 a month and Akira is a shadow of his former self. Gordon is Sushi Ko's last hope.

The wife is really something. I feel like the restaurant was not his idea. I feel he was pushed to do it and now he is stuck. Her hammering into him expectation after expectation made him disassociate from everything. The kids...gosh the financial relationship...I cant imagine the pressure. I hope the family as a whole is in a better place now.
sometimes you need a push and push is part of marriage sadly
@@athony2620not that kind of a push. There's a difference between supportive push and a forced negative one
That guys wife is the reason he was so emotionally withdrawn and depressed. Being emotionally abused and belittled will change you rmind setting. She's standing there being a spiteful person while he's working & enjoying himself. Mind you it's his first time in back of house for God knows how long. This lady really needs to get herself together and support her husband.
He should leave that toxic female. This is partner abuse...
Happens more than you know with women…. It’s a damn shame
Ikr
That's what I thought at first, but then after watching the full episode, although I agree that the wife could be more supportive, I believe that the guy has no perseverance to run a business and has built a high ego that was not letting him see the mistakes he was making. Also the women getting upset when she saw her husband excited and cooking again, can be a result of her not being able to bring her husband's motivation back through the years like Gordon was able to. Remember that it's the easiest to judge someone based on a video without knowing the whole story and what she had to be put through throughout the years.
anybody else dangerously addicted to watching the full episodes
Oh it's been like crack to me lately
Every damn night at dinner time.
hey atleast out attention span isnt fried
@@FunnyFavorsame!
Define "dangerously". I ate four days ago so I'm fine....I'm fine I tell you...
Can’t help but feel sorry for the guy, usually the owners are held back by their egos but there’s nothing more sad than a guy that’s completely given up on himself.
So chef Ramsay had to tell her how to be a wife lmao I thought she was ok at first but soon as Akira actually started to change she was still shitting on him
Akira looked depressed and was probably feeling unvalued. A woman can’t respect a man who isn’t a fighter. He’s a gentle Japanese man used to submissive or well mannered Japanese women.
@@RestWithin Western women are actually very disgusting by attitude gremlins. if I ever date someone it's going to be Arab or Asian woman.
@@RestWithinAfter that many years that would not be true. Maybe if he was still in Japan. Even now the claimed submissive Japanese girl is not really true now. He simply just shut down and she tried stepping up but in reality made it worse.
The fact the wife said that Akira wasn’t doing enough when he was fully thriving and smiling behind the sushi bar is infuriating. Like damn, give the guy a break and give him some time! He isn’t going to be perfect overnight.
It's absolutely crazy that instead of the parants being financially supportive of their kids, the kids are the ones working their ass off to pay for their parents' irresponsibility
Nothing wrong with it🙄 The son should have said he’d only do it if they changed the way the restaurant was ran.
It is called fielty. Sacrifice for family elders is foundational and Americans need to learn about this a little more. It's not complicated... Don't sell grandma, or the kids for more profit.
@@kusheranYou don't owe your parents your life. They made the choice to bring you into the world, that doesn't mean you need to repay them for that choice if it's detrimental to you.
@@nsmit907You don't owe them your life, however sons and daughters owe their old folks respect and care.
@@dorothykilgallenwasmurdere16531
I feel sorry for this guy. He married a bad wife. That's simple
Some people wanting to be looked up to don't have what it takes to earn respect, so they try to tear others down to below their own level. Akira and his children deserve better. No victim of such emotional abuse deserves that.
Salute to Gordon Ramsay sir for really helping like these families out 😢
This was such a shame. He was clearly a skilled and capable chef. Just struggled to find his place as an owner. Can criticize men for our egos, but a man that cant, or doesnt have pride in what hes doing, feels lost in purpose or worse, a failure, and is a broken man. Thats just the way it is. These men need comforting support and vote of confidence. Not constant criticism. Trust me they are their own critic and worse enemy.
And his wife really broke him with her behaviour by making him lose face/ridiculing him instead of supporting him.
Sure, it's not easy for her but losing face breaks a Japanese man. She should know his culture better being married to him for so long! I'm glad he found himself again and has a greatly equipped kitchen!
I hope they're all well nowadays as well!
@@shantinaturechild3239 EXACTLY!! Even in 2024, smart Japanese women never disrespect their spouse.
I don't trust you.
@@kusheranSmells like mysogyny. Nobody should be disrespecting their spouse, but men are not excempt from criticism purely because they are men. That would be babying them.
I have to agree, a spouse should be supportive, only critical when it's actually necessary, but never forgets to tell their significant other what they do well and the areas where they succeed. You can't constantly rip on someone and expect that to help, very few people actually improve with that kind of treatment. Especially from their spouse...
Gets "Best of the best" equipment.
Sells the place.
Blessing squandered.
Gordon always seemed to give the wrong people the new equipment but that's tv I guess
The equipment can be moved, or it can be an increase in the sales price. Squandering it would have been sitting in the location and letting the restaurant go under anyway.
They probably moved it when they found a better place, you’d be a fool to leave all that equipment behind
@@louisporter6030they opened another restaurant?
@@louisporter6030 You should do a Google search before saying things. They could not find a new location and the mounting debt nuked the company.
19:30 As many times that Gordon asked Akira a question and his wife walked all over him and did not let him speak... WTF! That is like abuse.
I heard the restaurant has a new name now, under new owners, but they kept the restaurant interior design because they like Ramsey’s design.
It's an Organic Juice shop now. I think there was another restaurant in between Sushi-Ko and the Juice shop, but can't remember which. (Don't listen to the articles that say it has become a California Pizza Kitchen, that's in a different unit within the same shopping center.)
I actually teard up a bit when the family talked to each other 🥲
Me too
Me 3
He doesn't want to cook anymore, that's obvious. Problem with some people is that they will nod, smile, and tell you what you want to hear & then do the opposite.
I can feel those 2 kids, because even i am 40, I have been helping my father ( can't open about the business ). Trust me I am happy now thinking that I could give him a support! fight for it kids!
I'll give you a toast to family businesses. This one's for your dad and mine.
all it took akira to get happy was a new refrigerator
Oh yeah that’s the guy who had the pizza sushi mmmmmm lol what a delicacy 🍕🍣
Fish does NOT belong on pizzas. Although, when I worked for California Pizza Kitchen they had a shrimp pesto pie that was fairly yummy.
bro is making 2 countries mad at him
I know places around here that have things they call sushi pizzas. Its a plague and gordon hasnt stopped it from spreading😔
@@pixels161 Two great cuisines blended into one is just too powerful, so it ends up bad.
ITS A JAPANESE HEALTH HAZARD!
Gordon being the best of all of us once again. Well done, sir.
@@Joel-qz6sd He can be hard with people but it's mostly to help them. It's a shock therapy to push restaurant owners who are about to lose everything, in the right direction. At least for short term, to give them a chance to not lose all they have. This man has a giant heart when you move past first degree.
The spouse who persistently undermines him exacerbates the situation. Instead of providing support, she incessantly tears him down with a flood of negative comments. It's truly disheartening. I harbor an intense dislike for that woman beyond what words can convey.
Place was closed before this episode even aired.
How come
@@robvazquez2074 I don't know for this specific case, but it is very common for these to fail. It is much harder to fix failing restaurants than this show portrays.
if I were to guess about this case, based on the fact that they moved, they probably sold it to benefit from all the new equipment and interior design, and then used the money to pay off debts.
@@Hedning1390 damn...
@@robvazquez2074usually the amount of debt these places had was too much to overcome even when they started getting more business. Vast majority of restaurants Gordon visited closed within three years
Just from the intro alone I know that I hate the wife.
"You think you ever work too much?"
"It's because he doesn't know how to get off his skinny ass and work."
Which one is it, lady?
she is toxic allright...hope they divorce , if not he will contiunue to sink down...she is not a person around you want to be
Had no idea the daughter, Hana Hatae, played Miles and Keiko O'Brien's daughter on Deep Space Nine the first time I saw this.
For real
I didn't know that! That was her in that one episode??? No way!
I looked up what happened after: unfortunately, Sushi Ko was closed before the episode even got to air as filming took place in 2009 during the Great Recession. The restaurant that took over the spot failed pretty quickly as well.
Hana is an absolute sweetheart, she is so beautiful and has a very beautiful soul, she is dedicated to her family both her and her brother Sammy. Wish I could be apart of their family cause there is so much love there
Poor guy
You can tell he isnt like other owners
Why is the music for the UK version always nice and calm but the music for the US version endless tension
It needs to match our news cycle
😂😂😂
its a little known fact that all americans have adhd so shows have to be maxxed out drama and tension to keep them watching
Because it’s interesting
Because we are dramatic 😂
She's toxic...those spiteful eyes watching him enjoy being behind the counter for the first time told me everything I needed...you can't make her happy ,your damned if you do dawned if you don't type of chic!
So not suprised they closed a few months later bc they couldn't find that other location..
I love how Gordon told the wife to shut up! My man !!
man the wife is so toxic
My thoughts too. Glad I'm not the only that sees it
I'm sure Akira would agree with you if he were ever allowed to speak up
the one part when she shows her true self is crazy, most of the time in kitchen nightmares the wife/husband help each other but this is next level of toxicity
She is from another culture! A toxic culture. He is a Japanese male, another toxic culture. It takes skill to be on an inter-racial team! We all should learn something.
Glad someone sees that
Yup wife is a major problem
Watching these shows, and Hotel Hell makes me feel even more content to eat/sleep at home!
Have I seen this episode many times before? Yes.
Will I watch it many times more? Also, yes.
Remembered this episode and always hated the wife lol
Is this place still open? The wife seemed to me to hammer the husband even further down.
The episode is from 2009 i think and the place got closed around August. Same year
Unfortunately no, they closed a long time ago. Apparently they tried to find a new location with lower rent but I assume they couldn’t find one in time, so they just stepped out of the restaurant industry entirely.
Akira is now an importer for Japanese and Chinese products, and Lisa basically job hops from restaurant to restaurant as a server.
Don’t know what the kids are doing, but Hana kinda recently did a reunion fan-episode with some of her costars from Star Trek, since she was a child actor.
Best thing he could do now is get a divorce and the place will be running great
Such a lovely family. I wish them success and happiness.
They closed not long after the episode aired
Pretty sure they closed before the episode aired.
Thanks for interesting and valuable video as always ❤❤❤
Akira may be a great chef but he's just not an owner. He'll be good working for a boss but not as a boss.
Why is the wife smiling while she's saying that her husband is a broken man?
Cause she is a witch haha 😂
Because she is a toxic female partner abuser... If it was the genders reversed... That man would proably be in jail-
Watching this show from Dubai it’s amazing I love chef Ramsay
Gordon is a fucking legend.
Awesome Video Gordon 😄😄
I think the mom is just showing love for the sake of camera
That wife is such a shrew.
I love this!!! So much❤️❤️❤️
I’d bet my entire paycheck that the wife is cheating on him as well,,, the way she talks to him and resents him like that,, #1 red flag
I think you pick up on the red flag, but off centre, when the wife saw her husband rebounding for the positive, she deliberately tried to sabotage his improvement, as his depression was her centrepiece for leaving, the intentional efforts to belittle him, were self preservation by the wife
Wife basically can’t handle her husband having more success than her. It’s really plain and simple from what we see here, assuming this isn’t edited for this reason. But really, it’s clear that she is hyper competitive to the point she’ll sink the entire family
😮mn no
I REMEMBER THE ICONIC SUSHI PIZZA!
Another banger
Imagine his kids getting "kill assist" Just after a customer happily ate there and never came back💀
I bet the wife is the actual fault and the husband is to much of a man to cause any insult to his wife.
I just bought Gordon Ramsay's frozen meals and its god sent.
I won't ever be able to actually taste a freshly cooked meal by this man, but his frozen meals are absolutely delicious. Full of flavor. Just wanted to say that.
I love the Mac and cheese but I can't justify spending $6 on a frozen meal!
@@blueactor672 it's like five dollars and a few cents. I have ebt and treat myself with a frozen meal here and there.
@@blueactor672 also ebt doesn't make you pay tax
Just gonna say it though… kinda funny he is so against frozen food… but has frozen meals 😂
@@Rae.Harper wow. I did not know that. Kinda hypocritical of him
40:00 Honestly best part it got me a little emotional
This is so emotional
A man that's not afraid to cry.... That's a real man and that's who akira is
Holy hell.. his "wife" is such a negative person.. no wonder he shut down.....
This is one of the sweetest families I have ever seen. Hope they are all doing well.
Too much debt. Lisa needs to stop B-tching.
One of the realest marriages in this show
Who in their right mind does sushi Pizza🤢🤮.. and that wife glad I don't work there.. no way would I put up with a mouth like that
She needs to respect him. He is struggling--and Ramsay needs to put the pants on him.
one of the most saddest episodes
Thank you Mr Ramsey for helping them
The place closed after ramsey and crew where there.
From yelp:
"They hammered the menu - damn you Ramsey! You DONKEY!
Also it seemed the quality suffered as well and the sushi was not on par. Overall after seeing what happened to it after, as being there before, they should have let things alone. Plus I always saw people there, the last time it was a Ghost town."
Hammer 🔨 Show mal wieder. Gorden Ramsay, Profi! Grüße 🖖 alle Gorden Fans aus Deutschland 🇩🇪 crazy kitchen *MANNHEIM*
This episode, Gordon really had to put on his Therapist Ramsay shoes.
Ah yes, sushi ko. I remember this episode.
The comments are open so this is the only way I can do it I think the family needs to help Dad to stay focused that he is a chef and he should be honored as one and every time he comes out from behind that counter unless they have a meal for himself or a breather send him back tell him he's not allowed to touch dirty dishes he's not allowed to serve dishes only to make them because he's a talented and experienced chef and a sushi chef at that wow he is to be honored and to be cherished😮❤
Turned this on as background noise while I made supper...and it's just hit me that I paired a salad in a sesame soy dressing and almonds with my farafelle and meatballs in basil marinara. 😂 Mixing Asian and Italian. I was just trying to use up my salad dressing, i swear.
But, hey, at least I didn't combine them.
the guys face when there was all that new stuff omg
I've subscribed Ramsey coz you have kinded heart❤
Everything worked out initially. Akira just needed some anti-depressants. Like a Ronin, lost his purpose and brought shame.
Gordon! You are the Best!😅😊
Very great idea i like very much
Let us remember that this episode was filmed, like what? 15 years ago?
Even then, in regards to the situation between Akira and Lisa...in my opinion, already y'all were too quick to judge.
There are 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And what may have been depicted in this episode may not really have been depicted behind closed doors in all those 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week in the family's lives OFF CAMERA. In other words, not everything was as it appeared to be.
However, it should be noted that earlier in the episode, it was stated Akira's change in demeanor was due to the drop in attendance (as stated by Lisa herself) of the restaurant, but more importantly that there was no mention of her being a factor or cause in all that, and that is despite of her own demeanor shortly before the relaunch where Gordon had a talk with her about cutting him some slack.
That being said, unless Akira or the kids themselves say otherwise, Y'ALL CUT LISA SOME SLACK!!! Damn.
Oh, something else, Hana made a post on Instagram as recent as literally a year ago that pretty much proved what I was trying to get across in this post: That the family are still together, so obviously, whatever those issues were, Akira and Lisa have since worked through them. So for those advocating for their divorce, JOKE'S ON YOU. While their restaurant ultimately did shutter for good, guess what? Their marriage didn't and neither did the family.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Anyone notice that the only person around with that length of grey hair is Gordon? lol js

Where's the comment that says what happened after?
The owner is clearly a broken man at first..... his face says "I don't want to be on this planet any more..."
The samurai was nice though

The show remodels the restaurant and the first thing the owners do is look for a different location? What the fuck?
GOD bless that kids
I kinda feel angry with the wait staff laughing they are there make money on tips but how can they survive if the food is terrible and no one comes in if that was me I would find another job
At 25:09 when the wife said and be friends I genuinely felt soo bad for Akira. His wife is deffo cheating on him. Such a cool, humble, down to earth guy. The wife is scum I just don't like her!
I would have loved if Gordon actually liked the sushi pizza.
