    Carbon reactors are the best way to run carbon because the granules don't become crushed from tumbling. Carbon will last depending on the grade. Bituminous grade is the fastest depleted but removes a lot of organic, phenols, and chemicals. Lignite is a softer carbon which requires more rinsing but has larger pore size which removes more organics,compounds, and contaminants. A combination of the two is Rox. 8. This carbon requires about half the amount, and can last upto a year because it also establishes bacteria. Making it part of your biological filtration. Great video Deven😊

    I do wish I could have a filter roller but I have a smaller tank and the way the sump is set up it is either a filter roller, or filter socks with a refugium. I of course chose the refugium but maybe as filter rollers get smaller it could be a future project 😊

  • @skillz_311
    @skillz_311 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You forgot to mention the best option....Media cups with filter floss. Roller replacements get expensive and constantly washing socks is a task on it's own. Filter floss....dump and replace is the absolutely best way to do it! you can buy a huge box of floss for like $20 and it'll last so long!

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have done that on nano tanks. Feels a bit wasteful on scale but you could also argue that on a filter roller. Biggest thing is the span between changes

      Alum (a dirt cheap, non-toxic cooking ingredient in grocery stores) works better than any water clarifier or algae control additive. Clears up the water real fast. Pond people use it all the time.

    I have crystal clear water and very stable parameters (sps is growing nicely).So everything is close to perfect. The one thing that is annoying me is that I have to clean the glass almost every day to get the really clean look. What’s your take on that.
    An automatic class cleaner would be a game changer…

  • @TrevorHiller
    @TrevorHiller ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So you don’t run carbon after the ozone reaction chamber? People parrot the need to do that and I don’t by that it is necessary because I’m sure carbon gets used up quickly in the reef tank environment.

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have but dont currently, ozone has a very short half-life and disipates quickly. also only run a small amount and in the middle of the night when no -one is around the tank for good measure so i see little to no risk there. As for in water ozone i believe its mostly used up within the skimmer it self (assuming you are only running a relatively low amount)

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UV can certainly help and add to water clarity, (i completely forgot to mention it! ) I do have one but am not currently using it to avoid the added heat it ads to the water. .

    • @djmikefury1
      @djmikefury1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReefDudes interesting - I just ordered an Aqua UV 57 watt for our waterbox reef 220.6 - how much heat dissipation did you notice? Were your probes showing over temp even though your heater was off? I presume it has to do with slower flow through it for parasites versus algae/bacteria control (just guessing)....also, I spoke to Waterbox technical support on how to setup the UV - they said to use the supplied dual manifold and have the output go back to the sump...my only question to that is, isn't that just going to recirculate and "re-sterlize" the same water?

    • @skillz_311
      @skillz_311 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djmikefury1 I have a waterbox 220.6 and the Aqua UV 57. My personal opinion is that the manifold is a bad idea. I feel like you'll be sterilizing the same water as you mentioned. I used a sicce pump in the skimmer chamber....left of the skimmer and the output to the return chamber. So it's sterilizing water coming in after it gets filtered through the filter floss.
