Adding a Crafting System to my Game || Keeper Devlog

  • In this video I add crafting to my indie survival game. The original idea was to have a UI where you can select items to craft, but I decided to just allow the player to smash two items together to create a new one. I also added in the ability to travel the ocean and I'll talk about the music for the game, made by AJ Booker.
The game is made in the Unity engine. Pixel art is made with Aseprite.

Hey everyone, a few things I forgot to say in the video.
    1. I'm planning to have some giveaways for free copies of this game once it's released. That'll be happening on Twitter, so you can follow me if you're interested. Link in description
    2. In the last video I said I wasn't going to upload for another two weeks, but then I only waited a week and two days lol. This time I'm actually going to stick to two weeks because I've been really really busy and I actually have not done anything for the past few weeks that wasn't university work or this game ahaha. I also have midterms next week so there's that.
    Thanks for watching! -Mickey

If you still have the flipping collider issue with the rocks, you can put the both the sprite and the collider as childrens of the player, and just tweak the rotation of the sprite children, in that way the collider doesn’t rotate, but it will still work as a collider and stick to your player. Can’t wait till your next vid!

Hey! I love the style of the game, it looks really cute!
For the pointer, I like the little transparent circle that shows pick-up-able items! I think that it'd be cool if the square tile selector (the yellow one with a tile range of 2) would turn gray and transparent if far away as well. I think that it would convey that you can't select something from that distance just as well as it disappearing, but imho, I think that it spontaneously vanishing looks a little odd. Of course this may just be me, but I don't think it'll hurt to experiment with it!
Great progress, and I think throwing two things together to craft is adorable!

    B. Keep in the collision changing with rotation as an Easter egg, to find some secrets.
    C. Take the spear and shield off of the default sprite. Add them in when you equip the respective item. Right now it's really confusing.

For recipes, use a map rather than a list - searching using a map runs at the same speed no matter how many recipes you have. A specific implementation could use an unordered set of all the items in the recipe, in this game a pair, or ordered if you want the item thrown to make a difference. Map this set to the resulting item crafted, and search the map using the pair as the key and the resulting item as the value whenever two items collide. This is especially useful since it allows for searching to be super quick with an infinite amount of items, and prevents searching through the entire list if an item doesn't exist since the mapping will just return a null value (no recipe) without having to do a full search through a list.
If you want to add mod compatibility, this is especially important as mods could add hundreds of thousands of recipes (such as Minecraft) and doing linear time searches through a list is slow enough to cause frame drops at those sizes - maps scale practically infinitely and suffer from no such drawback, and take up practically the same memory footprint as a list of recipe structures, if not less!

Hey, love the progress, so far. What if you would make it so when 2 craftable materials collide, instead of immediately transforming them into the result, transform them into a Result's Prototype. So if you combine a stick and a rock you will get a Stone Spear prototype. And if you pick it up you get the spear or you can continue adding resources and changing the output result. That will allow for much more complex recipes in my opinion. Keep it up!

The camera is one of the most important aspects of game development I think. A bad camera can completely ruin the player's experience.
I advise you 2 ways to make your camera:
    - Center the camera on a relative point between your player and the cursor (play on the distance from this point between the player and the cursor and the speed of movement of the camera to see what works best) this camera works well for top down shooters and it could also go very well with your game with a decentralized camera close to the player (maybe 10% of the distance) if close combat is more frequent than long distance combat.
    or
    - Keep the player's back close to an edge of the screen and therefore center the camera towards its walking direction
I think the first way is better it gives a bigger feeling of player control.
Also sorry for my English, I am French.
Good luck for the future !

Maybe you can make some kind of elemental monster (like the slime but different) that give's you effects (poison ,nausea ,etc).
And for the combat idea ,you should add knockback.
Could also add death sounds for the monsters ,and for the player. If the player dies ,he respawn at the campfire ,his loot remaining at his corpse ,which can be turned into an zombie that needs to be killed for the loot!

Also since it’s a smallish game , if you want it to be replayable you could make it in a similar style to games like realm of the mad god, not necessarily multiplayer but certain areas there are bigger bosses to grind for, grind for better weapons that drop from better bosses and maybe a levelling or stat system, as it’s a survival game instead of RPG maybe combine it so you get rarer resources from bosses to make better armour, fight even harder ones etc, this may take a while but just some random ideas! One thing I've learned making games so far is that, the more you can simplify your controls, the better.
The possibility to play the whole game only using the keyboard makes it really accessible and consistent, for all kinds of people.
(eg.: using 1-4 number keys to select items from inventory, and so on)
Also, the camera smoothing feels a bit unnecessary as well. As most games in the style (retro tilebased open world) have fixed cameras (either to the whole layout or fixed to the char's position). Or at least make it really subtle (like only a few ms of delay to centralize to the char).
    best of luck,
And the crafting system looks really cool

Your game looks neat, mate, keep it up! An idea for your poison potion: it could give the player some temporary advantage in exchange for that bit of life. Like additional speed or strength.

    I have a couple of idea’s.
Maybe is it a idea to have like a “starters island” (like the great plateau of Breath of the Wild) were you learn the basic's of how to craft. (it doesn't spoil the whole game when you just say: "here is how to craft". So that would prevent you from missing importnat information in the beginning.
And another suggestion: Instead of just instantly have the ability to go anywhere with your boat. You have to craft the boat first.
My last idea for now is to add fruit to some of the trees. Which you can then turn into salads when you combine different kinds of fruit (from different parts of the generated world). That would add a higher urge to explore. The better the fruit and combination, the better restoration of health.
Btw, the game looks very nice! :) Keep up the good work!

Nice content btw. Just a tip for the camera: Anticipation. If you move to the right accelerate the camera towards that direction and decelerate when it is like 1.5x from the center. So you avoid the sickness of heavy follow, the hero can see ahead towards his direction and the camera can tell a history too

Enjoying the content! Keep it going, and good luck with uni.
Also, in regards to your course dev program: not sure of you were making a joke about Windows aero shake, or if aero shake is legitimately crashing the program when it tries to minimize. In either case, you can disable aero shake!

here are some ideas i think you can use :
1.you can craft the health potions from flowers t
2.you have to click on the resources a couple of time before getting the material
3.make potions that give you an ability (such as:getting faster/stronger) that look exactly like the poisonous potions so the player has to test his luck

Advice for your crafting system. Look at using scriptable objects. You will find out quickly how complicated it is to manage many recipes. The useful thing about this is that you can have a folder called Recipes and just right click and create new recipes in seconds. Therefore you can name recipes and change them without redoing a ton of things. I like the progress so far though :)

The slower view is a good idea, but keep in mind that the player probably want to see more where he is going and less where he is coming from. Your camera does that in reverse. You could also make the go in between the player character and the cursor so the cam looks where the player has its cursor.

For the camera movement, try adding a overbounded tween to the camera movement. This consists of tweening the camera to move just beyond the player's position by setting something like (1.01 * player's change in position vector) as the camera's tween target, then stopping the camera movement and correcting it to snap to the player's exact position when it exceeds the player's position to achieve a smooth camera effect that locks on to the player's exact position

nextProgram hey! Did have a couple, since the game is about protecting a fire, how about there be a mob that wants to destroy it, and you can build a type of fence that, when (and if) they come at night, it slows them down. A type of pixalated ray shield could do but this game seems more primitive themed. If you decided to add housing, walls, etc something that imo be interesting would be ladders, stairs, small chests and beds to add a depth to building. Hope you like the ideas, really like the game you’ve developed so far

Minor tweak I thought about while looking at the code on 4:26. I think this is a perfect use case for a hash map, if the list of items is too long it may eat performance. But then again maybe is too early to do performance tweaks. Loving the progress on the game dude.

  • @fish7540
    @fish7540 4 ปีที่แล้ว

This is really great! I love the crafting system! The only thing I would change is to remove the outline from the hearts, sticks, spears and the boat. I think it looks kind of weird if the rest of the game is smooth, without a black outline but specific items have black outlines. This also counts for the enemies, but for those it kind of works because they are supposed to stand out I guess? Maybe you could give them softer outlines, which are not completely black? I also think it might be a good idea to add Hotkeys for selecting specific inventory slots (1-4)

You can implement something like traveling merchant, where you can buy some hard to get resources, maybe bow, and you can build out of logs and with new item, leafs you can build roof. Also night and sleeping system. Maybe building some pillars and then building on them in water. I really love your channel, I shared it with my friends and they love it too. I think this has a very good future, continue your work and you will be super sucesfull.
