- This first time reaction to Ronnie James Dio has been a long time coming and who better to introduce me to this iconic vocalist than someone who absolutely adores this singer and first suggested him to me? Incredible vocalist/analyst/educator, Elizabeth Zharoff from @TheCharismaticVoice will be showing me Rainbow's "Stargazer" for my first time hearing Dio. I watch this one two or three times a week. It's positively delightful on several levels. The flickering emotions on Julia's face are priceless, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for her. Look closely and there is a moment when she is in FEAR of how good Dio is. Elizabeth is tortured by attempting to hide the fact that she's clearly having the time of her life, an odd combination of factors. An epiphany occurs when Elizabeth finally drops her reserve. The technical comments are on point but as is mentioned, Dio's perfomance is an endless series of one incredible aspect after another after another, and it is impossible to analyze more than a small percentage of them. The honesty of the entire production is rare indeed, and most cherished. (except... do they know the vocals are not a live recording?)
Are there awards shows for reaction videos? This is easily the greatest reaction vid of 2023, if not of all time. It deserves 1000 times the amount of views it gets. Still, the virtuosity of Dio and Blackmore deserve 97 percent of the credit. Without those two, there is nothing.

@@2Times22 yes and no. Dio was going to be the best with or without blackmores help. It would just take Dio a little longer than what actually happened. You cant thank someone for finding or exposing someones talent when the talent was already there. He helped dio with putting him on the spotlight quicker than dio doing it on his own.

Forever, the 5 foot man with the 10 foot voice. We'll never get another Dio, but damn is it always a pleasure to go back and listen to the gems he left.
A great way to describe Ronnie James Dio. He was the sort of person who may have been small in stature but a giant of a man in terms of the person he was. His passing was a great loss to us all.
I went to a concert that Rainbow opened. Judas Priest I believe. Hey it was a lonnnggg time ago. I was laughing at this little guy in huge clog lift shoes coming out on stage. Then he started singing. I was stunned. Truly amazing. He had some serious lungs to go with that great voice.

Ronnie James Dio's father used to make him practice the trumpet from when he was 5 years old for 3 hours a day. He learnt how to use his dirapraym playing trumpet and transitioned the skill into his singing. It is all in the Dio Documentry "Dreamers never die". He was not only an amazing singer but he was an amazing giving person. The end of the documentry made me cry.

Dio had no formal vocal training but he learned to master breath control from playing the trumpet as a child. He sang in bands from high school onwards and began his recording career in the late 50s, so he had plenty of experience by this point in time.
I came here to say this. Just saw his Showtime documentary “Dio: Dreamers Never Die” last night and it was fascinating to hear how he practiced trumpet 5-6 hours a day as a kid and sounded so good singing doo-wop and early rock music before he became a metal icon.
From what i remember from the autobiography he started playing trumpet at 5 years old and he played it into his teens and actually did a lot of gigs playing trumpet which i didnt know before.

It was such wonderful training for Dio, because he sings the same way he would play trumpet in the 50's. He did it from his diaphragm, there’s a proper technique to do it. So, he just applied what he did as a trumpet player to that all the time.
I am 52 in November one of my biggest regrets I never got a chance to see Ronnie James Dio live and I really wish I had done.

Thank you Julia & Elizabeth. Been following Dio since his band Elf. No one, NO ONE, can hold a candle to RJD. Thankfully, he left us with an unmatched catalog of brilliant vocalization & writing. Dio & Blackmore... unrivaled talent... watching, or listening to RJD, brings both unparalleled awe & sorrowful melancholy. A true gentleman with a talent beyond measure...gone too soon. Some will fully understand me when I say that "I truly loved him, for touching my soul & filling my heart with magical emotions. Tears of both joy & sadness each time I hear him"...

And yet actually they are serious professionals. It's the emotion stirring from the music that turns them so. Joy to watch them this way and at the same time I am full of envy about how great artists in music have the ability to drive pretty women to nearly delirious state, using their talent rather than machismo.

I still think y'all are misinterpreting the story in Stargazer. One theory says the pyramids were built w/ help of aliens, & they were placed worldwide, strategically, to create a power source- lasers, magnetism, a wormhole even- to propel their ships into space. THAT'S the tower Dio & friends built- a pyramid. Why would he say "where is your star, is it far"? If they only thought it was a tower to fly off of, why would he think it was being used to go to the stars unless the aliens told them as much? Ancient humans thought earth was IT, had no concept of travelling to the stars- but it is a part of folklore in many ancient civilizations that say the gods came from the stars. Anyway. So once there was an accident, the pyramid device failed, spaceship crashed, "wizard" is killed. I know it sounds nuts but Dio must've read the same books I did. It's interesting to think Stargazer (even the TITLE references stars- how can this be wrong?)- yeah. Interesting to think the song is based in literal truth- or at least folk lore that actually exists- instead of being just a 100% totally fictional construct.

I had the overwhelming pleasure of meeting Dio in New Orleans. He was such a great human being. Humble and kind, a special person who was an asset for this world.
I feel I must express that Stargazer has a forgotten fraternal twin sister in "A Light In The Black" which completes the story and very much deserves to be remembered.
A Light in the Black is freaking fantastic, very little music since has come close to the brilliance of this Rainbow lineup.

Dio was my first concert with Sabbath in '79 on the Heaven and Hell tour. I was floored by his voice.... still am!
I saw the Heaven and Hell tour in Baltimore, Md. Hard to remember specifics from that long ago but I do remember talking about that concert for weeks afterward...

if you listen to the tail end of Ritchie's solo the high end and descending slide signify the fall of the wizard off the tower with the drums expressing the death knell collision at the end. Its story telling and musical synergy at its finest and yet in very simple terms that are so expressive. What a great song. No wonder it is considered a classic rock piece.

This song is absolute perfection on every level
I get chills every time I listen to Stargazer. The one thing about RJD, is that when you strip the vocals from the music and listen to just him, the voice is pure.
This is entertainment...
At one point they observe it's quite hard work to maintain the voice throughout the entire song. And vocalists like RJD do it throughout the entire show, 1.5 or 2 hours long. With no recitatives, orchestral parts or other _dramatis personae_ to fill the time. And with abusive rock'n'roll lifestyle full of some interesting stuff late at night, plus travelling from one city to another - in place of some opera singers' stringent routine of protecting their voices.
Even as the song is fading out, he is just pouring it on at full volume. What an absolute titan.
Dio was able to maintain his strong voice throughout his entire career, which is very rare for singers that hit such ranges and power.
I love Rob Halford but he couldn't maitain his voice in the long run .

Many of those that we consider “great” vocalists are reaching the extremes of their abilities in order to sound “great”. These singers tend to burn their vocals. The ones that seem to hang on to their vocal abilities train and stay within their range rather than pushing past.
Then there’s Dio. Dio is just that good.

@@ibrstellar1080 Agreed. But it’s not too often Jon Bon Jovi is grouped with the “great” vocalists. But agreed that there are many factors that can kill a set of pipes. But there are plenty of vocalists that have played too many gigs, did too many drugs, drank too much alcohol and other things that could potentially ruin a singers voice. Take a listen to Sammy Hagar or Jack Russell. Those two cats are old and have done plenty gigs, drank plenty of alcohol and whatever else, but both still have pretty solid voices. Hell, Sammy is 76 years old and still killing it.
My point was simply this. Dio played a ton of shows for so many years, and age and use didn’t affect him like so many others. Some vocalists are just superior to all the others.
R.I.P. Ronnie. A small man with a gigantic voice who never gave up his fight for life.

Ronnie was classically trained as a trumpet player, but self-taught as a vocalist! He explained that he simply applied the breathing techniques he had learned on trumpet to vocals at the time. Great video! Keep up the good work, much love!

Exactly what I came here to say. Dio adapted the breathing techniques for trumpet to his singing.
And he sang like this throughout the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s and he was singing in the 60s too. 6 decades at least.

Rainbow's "Rainbow Rising" was gifted to me as a 14 yr old living on a farm in New Hampshire. What a blessing. I had no idea what I was listening to and I became a huge RJD fan from that point on. I was very fortunate to see him in concert. His powerful voice blew us all away. RIP.

Ronnie was so underrated and sadly he hasn't gotten what he deserves and that is to be in the Hall of Fame. Ronnie didn't sell out. He stayed true to his craft and was known as a humble man by all who knew him. The fans were what mattered to him. He NEVER lost sight of that. He literally lived to perform for those who came to see him every night. Oh and by the way... He was , is , and will ALWAYS be The Man On The Silver Mountain.

Mostly... He had a temper and expected perfection from the performers and technical people around him.. ALWAYS.
He trained trumpet as a child. He said several times that when he started singing, he imagined his voice as the trumpet!! And also it helped hugely with his breathing.
It would be interesting to know if we could have better results by focusing solely on breathing techniques a lot before even trying to teach singing at all.
That's cool. I watched a documentary on notorious BIG and he had a neighbor who was like an uncle figure in his life. That man played jazz drums and they would listen to jazz drummers together. As he got into rapping, he would use his voice as the "jazz drums" on the track and I can never un-hear it.
@@robertmorano2372 if you're familiar with Harry Mack at all, he also has a jazz drumming background. It really shows with how complex some of the rhythmic schemes in his raps are (and is incredibly impressive)
As a child I think his parents listened to the opera singer Mario Lanza which also gave him operatic influence, love stargazer
Ronnie also played French horn too when he was young and played bass guitar in several things before Rainbow. I think that gave him more of a feel and flow in his writing style! I watched him 5 times live! He was such an inspiration!

To me the guitar solo captures the state of confusion and disbelief of the crowd after the wizard splattered onto the ground, then he revisits the sight of his falling at the end of the solo as you two pointed out. Brilliant 👏
Thank you for giving Ronnie's voice another forum. His power & control came from his training as a trumpet player in his youth... from the diaphragm. I've seen him live a number of times, several shows where he performed this song. Never had a bad night & always hit those notes with power & clarity. He was a force of nature, unparalleled. RIP Ronnie.
Not only did he train as a trumpet player in his youth, he also trained on the french horn. I remember reading this in a magazine article taken from an interview he did back sometime in the 1980s. He pointed out that playing the french horn requires the player to blow through at least 40 feet of tubing. Clearly this would involve building up some serious lung capacity, which would then transfer quite nicely to singing.
To hear another fantastic example of Ronnie's abilities, I would highly recommend listening to his performance on the song "Sign of the Southern Cross", when he was singing with Black Sabbath on their 1981 album "The Mob Rules". Furthermore, anything he did with Black Sabbath during his 1980/81 period with them is well worth checking out. Easily some of the best work he ever did.
I find it interesting that Dio's vocals in this song match his vocals in The Last In Line. Listen to both songs back to back. I'm not educated enough in music to fully explain the similarity. I don't know if the chords, scales or progressions are similar or what. I find it hard to believe the similarity is coincidental.

Great album but let's be honest Do You Close Your Eyes is kinda filler.
There’s no way you can be ‘trained’ to sing like Dio. Basics yes, but from then on it’s strictly authentic creativity.
Ronnie James Dio is one singer that was PHENOMENAL his entire career! Not only is not only a fantastic singer, he was an incredible person as well. I met him when I was 19 years old back in 1998, and he is to this day the nicest musician I have ever met. He is the greatest singer I have ever seen the three times that I have seen him. Just incredible how amazing his singing is.
100 percent agree. His fans were the world to him and he made sure each and every one he spoke to knew that. As well as just being a genuinely good person.

The vocals are extraordinary, obviously, but what makes this song for me is the Middle Eastern flavour of it. Richie's guitar work is just mind blowing. It is true genius.
The whole arrangement is masterful. Don Airy's(?) Keyboard work creates such a beautiful backdrop for the guitar & vocals. This lineup with Cozy Powell was the best rock group at that time IMHO.
@@phydauex Tony Carey played keyboards on this track. Don Airey joined Rainbow after Dio left, therefore Airey didn't record any albums with Dio.
You can talk about Sabbath all you want, but in my opinion, Dio-era Rainbow with Ronnie's voice and Blackmore's amazing guitar work was truly METAL and the inspiration of so many metal bands and metal sound decades following.

DIO was just a once & a lifetime talent, the greatest vocalist in heavy metal & hard rock. I’m not a singer, never been interested in singing; in fact this album Rainbow Rising along with Van Halen one made me want to learn guitar; but DIO that’s one vocalist I’ll always listen to & you know it’s him singing when the vocals come into the song. This lineup of Rainbow will always be my favorite band ever, this is one my favorite songs ever & Ritchie Blackmore is always a inspiration for me on the guitar. The album Rainbow Rising is perfect from start to finish, one of the greatest albums ever recorded

Not only is Ronnie's voice phenomenal on this track (and pretty much everything he sings) but this TRACK is (pretty much) the most kick-ass tune, EVER, in heavy metal/heavy rock. Blackmore, Powell, Bain, etc... PHENOMENAL. And Elizabeth is just sitting there GRINNING throughout... you SO rock, girl!

Im sure Ronnie is smiling ear to ear knowing his music is still be enjoyed (and especially appreciated by two Amazing vocalist as well) Cozy Powell is one of the cornerstones of his era (he played on so many hits from that timeframe) so glad you pointed out the drums.
He's a great drummer.

Ronnie makes it look so easy! Just stands there, on the stage, ..."through the heat and the rain"...and hits it all!
Dio was fully immersed, fully one with his performance. It wasn't an act, he was living the part so it was emotional, delivered with a purpose. The sound poured from his soul. You can see it in his expression and body language as well. Listening to him and experiencing his performance is quite a emotional and almost physically draining experience. It grabs you and shakes you to your core. So beautiful. I saw Rainbow on this tour, Rainbow Rising, in 1976. It was a special concert for our country's bicentennial celebration. There will never be another Ronnie James Dio. Another song on this album called Starstruck is another of my favorites. The band I was in back in the early 80s covered that song.

I'm 57 and I was listening to Dio in Rainbow at 12 years old then in high school when he replaced Ozzy and with the satanic panic and his solo career it was just considered noise and no one outside of metal even considered what a remarkable performer he was. Thank you for introducing so many new listeners to his remarkable talents. As a lifelong Dio fan Thank you again.
Dio is an amazing vocalist in general and as far as I am concerned the Greatest of the Metal Gods. I hope you were able to see him in concert at least once since you were around through his prime in terms of performance. Sadly I never got the chance before his passing. Amazing to see new people get introduced to his/his bandmates work.
Nobody liked him cuz they were faithful Oz, but ten Heaven and Hell hit and pretty much every track was gold.
Their next album was pretty much the same.
I still remember sitting in the theater on the opening day of "Heavy Metal" and the entire theater going barking mad when Mob Rules began playing. Legendary. 😁

I love that there's as much appreciation here for Blackmore's playing as Dio's voice. Both of them are amazing.
Besides Ronnie's vocal capacity, he's a master lyricist. The lyrics he has written throughout his career are just as satisfying and profound.

I love Dio! and Richie Blackmore's Rainbow and Black Sabbath with Dio. But my friends and I always made light of Dio's lyrics. They always seem to be about whips and chains and rainbows and magic, but I never cared. The lyrics were just words to say while one feels the music. (Unless you are talking about Rush who actually wrote Lyrics)
I love watching people discover RJD. He was the greatest metal vocalist we have seen and his vocals are unmatched. The Rising album is in the top 5 greatest metal albums of all time
His vocals were not only legendary, his song writing skillset were leagues above anyone who came before or after him! BTW Richie typically plays his solos using that Arabic scale. NOTE: The 2nd part of this song is entitled "A Light in the Black", check it out (Richie's solo in that session is mind blowing & of course Ronnie shines as always)…Thanks for the decades of memories Ronnie, and for you both for show-casing and appreciating the music we grew up on. I recently watched the new Dio documentary and it was phenomenal. Although he never had vocal training he attributed his ability to sing to playing the trumpet and that using both instruments comes from the diaphram. As a child his father made him practice trumpet for 3 hours every day which made it a more natural and comfortable when he started to sing.
He also listened to opera, Mario Lanza when he was growing up. Seems like a great recipe for a great singer.

As a fan of Ronnie James Dio since 1984, I have been watching Elizabeth's reactions to Dio for over 2 years......This video brings me so much joy (as a RJD fan) .... thank you both for making me smile.

In my opinion, there are three metal singers at the very top. Dio, Rob Halford, and Bruce Dickinson (the last of whom I just heard on the current tour, and he somehow hasn't lost a step). Hard to say which one's best. Halford has unlimited power, Dio has amazing technique, and Dickinson has perfect diction (and stage presence). I just consider them the metal triumvirate and leave it at that. No one else is in their league.
@@reliantncc1864 Agree, great opinion and very well founded. I love Bruce Dickinson too, I feel that his energy, his stage presence and, as you said, his diction, make him outstanding. I think he is also a great storyteller, he generates very special atmospheres. A very complete guy even outside of singing. IMO, Geoff Tate can compete in those big leagues, probably in my personal top 4, I think I say DIO, Dickinson, Tate and Halford, each with their characteristics.
Even so, they are still very personal opinions and everything is respectable, my favorites are DIO and Dickinson because they are the ones I listen to the most.

@@Chepo90 I'm not terribly familiar with Queensryche and Geoff Tate. I liked "Eyes of a Stranger" well enough, but most of their other songs I tried out didn't do it for me. That said, I didn't grow up listening to them the way I did with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and others. Got any suggestions for what I should listen to if I liked "Eyes?"
@@reliantncc1864 To be honest, I didn't listen to Queensryche that much either as a band itself. Just a few single songs and then the Operation Mindcrime album, which was always said to be his masterpiece. IMO, an excellent album.
I highlighted him as a great singer because from what I was able to enjoy him, it shows that he has an impressive vocal range and excellent resources as a vocalist.
So, at least that album if you're interested you can listen to it as a complete conceptual work. Long live metal, greetings!
Would agree, except for one addition- Geoff Tate. With maybe Ian Gillan (and you can argue Michael Kiske, although I’m not a Helloween fan, really), these are the Gods of metal Vocals. On Mt Olympus alone.
This was so fun watching you two ladies together!! Dio was pitch perfect every time. His last performance, when he had cancer, it looked like something was wrong physically but his voice was as strong as ever. The Elf with the Golden Voice aka The Man On The Silver Mountain.

I saw him many times but, like most young rock fans ( I think) I never quite appreciated him at the time. Sure he was special, great, stood out from all the others, but with these reaction videos, to see people who actually UNDERSTAND what made him so special, it's all so cool. That's what most of my friends said in the 1970s-"Dio, yeah, he's cool man." I'd try to explain that he was more than cool, he was the Best, but since I couldn't explain WHY he was the best, meh, it was just my subjective opinion and nobody listened to me. Hope that made sense...?

He sang from his stomach often, I was fortunate to see his last performance in ohio in 2010 with Heaven and Hell. He was 65 that night..sang as if he was 25..he is forever etched on my skin..he was/is King,so glad you enjoyed

I just can't help myself from coming back to this reaction whenever it either pops up in my feed, or when I've been watching a few others. A lot of it, og course, is down to the song itself being a masterpiece, but the combination of Julia's visceral amazement and uncontainable appreciation of the technical and artistic mastery at play (both professionally and personally); her pure first-time listener's joy, and the almost wicked tinge to Elisabeth's knowing grin and gleeful anticipation just makes this so much fun to watch! Favourite reaction on youtube, by far.

I wish Dio could've heard your analysis. He would sit down with you two and discuss this. He loved intelligent conversation about his work.
I think on some levels hearing the absolute love of his voice would probably make him blush. He was so humble of his skill and abilities. I mean, don't get me wrong, he was a vocal God and he knew it, but it never ruled over him. He would have appreciated it deeply though.

Nice piece of work, ladies! ... I bumped into Ronnie at the Graspop festival end of June 2005 while I was visiting a guitarist friend backstage - actually I kind of ran him over at a corner (as his physical size in contrast to his voice was rather small) ... while I only realized to whom I apologized, he shrug it of, looked at his plastic cup on the floor and asked "Want a beer?" ... what followed was one of the nicest five min conversation I had with a celeb - he was so nice, humble and welcoming to a pure stranger. Rest in peace, Sir.
The best thing of Rainbow songs is that you have to listen through at least 5 times to hear it all: once for overall sound, once for vocals, once for guitar, once for drums, then again for overall sound again! awesome levels of sound!

Absolutely mind-blowing! Ritchie Blackmore was born in the same town where I live - Weston-super-Mare in South West England.
This is one of the greatest songs ever written, and it shows Rainbow at their very best, which is scary good! I love that, besides analyzing Dio's masterful vocals, you were just as stunned by Ritchie's playing, and that's a normal reaction. :))) His playing is so unique and so brilliant!
... and largely informed by classical music I think. Isn't Ritchie known for preferring to listen to classical music rather than rock music in his leisure time?

Ritchie Blackmore's ascending run during the solo is possibly my favourite moment in the history of guitar playing. Dio's other "best" vocal performance is the version of Still I'm Sad from Rainbow On Stage. Maybe the best sustained note in the history of rock music.
This is my favorite Blackmore song. Really showcases what he can do. Let's not forget the work being done by drummer Cozey Powell.
