"Stargazer" is an epic classic that is superior vocally, musically and composition. One of the best songs ever recorded. In 1977 Rainbow did a live concert in Munich Germany for TV, there is some great footage from this magical concert that should be reacted to. From this concert the songs, "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow" are the stand out masterpieces, however the other songs "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Long Live Rock n Roll", "Still I'm Sad", "16th Century Greensleeves", "Do You Close Your Eyes", and "Kill the King" are exceptional as well. This band is packed with talent.

The audio on this video was the studio version of Stargazer, dubbed into live clips, but of all the singers in rock, Ronnie was one of the few who was just as good live as he was in the studio and, at times, even better! He retained that quality in his singing spanning six decades. I don’t know of another singer about whom that can truthfully be said. His lyrics and way with a melody took you on fantastic journeys. RJD was a one-off and has gone down in the annals of music history as The King of Metal. To top it off, nobody treated their fans better and had more reverence and gratitude for them than Ronnie. He wrote his music to lift us up and indeed, that’s exactly what it did and does. Ronnie once said, “It’s not how long your pencil is, it’s how big you write your name.” To his fans, his name is scrawled across the very cosmos for all time! He will be deeply loved, sorely missed and loudly cranked forever and ever. Amen! 🤘🏼

I remember going to Minneapolis, MN in 2000 to see Dio in concert at the (now defunct) Quest Club on the 'Magica' tour... I was up front when Ronnie James Dio took the stage and blew my ears out w/ Dio - Craig Goldy (guitar), (the late) Jimmy Bain (bass), Simon Wright (drums) & Scott Warren (keyboards)... It was the first time I had experienced him live 🤘🤘🔥🔥A night to remember!!!
Saw Dio again in 2002 opening for Scorpions & Deep Purple... this time w/ Doug Aldrich on guitar. He played Rainbow's 'Man on the silver mountain' that day.
3rd and last time I saw Ronnie James Dio was w/ Heaven and Hell (Dio-era Black Sabbath) in 2007 w/ Megadeth opening... hearing those classic Black Sabbath songs live was just... legendary 🤘🤘🔥🔥 and I was up front once again!

Easily one of the greatest rock/metal songs ever written. Even for someone who's heard nearly every major rock/metal band and album out there from the 70s to today this song still stands out as one of the pinnacles. Pretty much every element is perfect, from Cozy Powell's virtuosic drum intro and fills, to the grooving bass of Jimmy Bain, to that instantly memorable keyboard/choral progression from Tony Carey, to Ritchie Blackmore delivering one of the best guitar riffs AND solos in the same damn song to... well, of course, the GODLY vocals of RJD. One of those perfect song that every element is at its highest level and changing anything would diminish it.

17 hours ago I said that this was the best male vocal performance ever in a rock song. I’m really happy that you enjoyed it as much as you did. Now you know why there was a clamour for it. I’m not sure if there is a video available on TH-cam, but you have to listen to “Rainbow Eyes” from the album after this (his last with Rainbow). Not sure if you reacted to “Gates of Babylon” from that last album either. If not, both of those are absolute musts. Lovely to see someone who wasn’t born being so moved by something that I’ve been listening to for nigh on half a century.

This was the studio recording with a collage of video and still shots. The guitarist (Richie Blackmore) was renowned for creating guitar solos that were both melodic and organic (i.e. they fitted the song context rather than just added for the sake of having a guitar solo\) - live this song was even more epic. Dio was a powerhowse vocalist and the drummer at the time (Cozy Powell) was also a huge presence at the back of the stage. A great ... but short-lived band.

Blackmore was top dog when this band was formed, but by the time Rainbow Rising was released with the addition of Cozy Powell on drums it was clear Dio was the star of the band. 3 alpha males in one band. By the time Long Live Rock n Roll came out, it was Dio's Rainbow. I had the privilege of seeing the band on the Long Live tour and Dio was the Star and Ritchie knew it and tried to draw attention to himself..."hey, this is my band." He has a big ego, but RJD had stolen the spotlight. Anyway, check out the entirety of Rainbow Rising. One of the absolute greatest metal albums of all time. A masterpiece. Great review also. I think tension is the word you were looking for rather than anxious. Good music builds tension and then resolves it much like a good story has a build up, climax and resolution. If Stargazer had been the only song Rainbow ever wrote, it would be enough to categorize them as an epic band. Dio certainly is one of the top five rock/metal vocalists that ever graced the planet. We miss him dearly.

I would also add that there are few other musicians who can write lyrics like Dio. His songs are packed with such depth and mystery they are a never ending source of meditation and catharsis. Equally so, I know of no other guitarist more meticulous than Richie Blackmore who had a profound influence on Dio's performance precision. Thank you for honoring him, I love how you phrased it that "he has made a place in our heart," it has never been said better. I've had the privilege of seeing him in concert, he truly and dearly loved his audience, of whom you have joined. Thank you.

Saw this lineup 1976 here Frankfurt Germany, Jahrhunderthalle. Supporting act AC/DC!!!!!!!! - ticket price 8 Euros!!!! AC was more or less unknown at that time here in Germany (with Bon Scott) and they gave Rainbow a hard time, But both bands were fantastic. No tattooes, no fucking smartphones, no overweighed people. At "Catch The Rainbow" the crowd went still. Those were them days, I can say " I was there". Musicwise the 70ies- we had a gas.

Your face is as expressive as Dio's voice. About a year ago I came across the Stargazer video and watched it a bunch of times. The emotion Dio projects, especially at the end, brings tears to my eyes. Then I got a message from the girl I regrettably broke up with 21 years prior. I asked her to take me back, and she did. Whenever I hear Dio's soulful lament to "take me back", it reminds me of the emotions I felt in the week between her first message and the hug that made us both realize we belong together. Keep on Rockin' and reacting!

Dio was such an amazing vocalist and from all the interviews I had seen from different people he was an all-around good person. HE would go out of his way for his fans. It is mind blowing that he had very little vocal training. One of his best vocal performances was the song Mistreated by Rainbow, the live version from 1977 in Munich.🤘

OMG I cannot wait for the look on your face. The greatest guitar player in rock history coupled with the greatest male vocalist in rock, backed by the powerhouse drumming of Cozy Powell. Of that trio, only Ritchie is still with us, and he’s still the master. The outro is the best male vocal performance in a rock song ever.

Unlike most other guitarists, Blackmore's solos almost never feels like just a filler. He is equally good both when he goes completely bananas and slow and melodic.

She's still probably just gonna comment on the bass xD That's what has happened many times when a sick guitar solo has started playing. Nothing wrong with that though!

RAINBOW was the personal project of Deep Purple"s former (and founder) guitarist RITCHIE BLACKMORE.
After he quit Purple he picked the members of ELF, (except the guitarist of course). ELF was the band that opened the concerts of Purple in 1975; with them, Blackmore formed the first incarnation of Rainbow, including Ronnie James Dio on vocals.
With Blackmore, Ronnie received tha opportunity he was expecting for a long time and started to shine by himself and by his very unique talent and vocal style.
STARGAZER is one of the songs from Rainbow second album called 'Rising', maybe the best album of the band.
Dio recorded only one more album and quit, because of musical differences with Blackmore and start to shine solo.
For a time he joined Black Sabbath, but finally he formed his own band called simply DIO.
He appeared with Deep Purple in 1999, when they celebrated 30 years of the 'Concerto For Group and Orchestra' and sing a couple of songs with them on that show (with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall), you can check, and react to that performance too here: th-cam.com/video/lxaCl7Ce95M/w-d-xo.html

    Just a masterpiece.

Sadly, this video, while brilliantly cut together, is not a live video. The music is the original recording, including the Munich Philharmonic orchestra at the end. Stargazer is one of my all time favorite songs, so it's always great to see others discover this titanic piece of music.

@@alexandernicholas7150 I was going to write that this is not a live version, but Ulff beat me to it. It sounds exactly like the studio version, so I suspect it is. Clearly the guitar and singing are not synced to the video. This is my favorite song of all time. (For another great Rainbow song listen to The Temple of the King. It has quite a unique 'dreamy' guitar solo.

Great reaction to the song & the solo! Ritchie Blackmore was the master "snake charmer" of solos on this and many other Rainbow classics with Dio. His solo on "Gates of Babylon" is one of his best and also one of his favorites. Well worth checking out. Also have a look and listen to "Love is All" with Dio on vocals from the Butterfly Ball album. Cheers!

Dio, Blackmore, and Powell were all three the best at their crafts of all time, you put them together, well this song shows it! Please enjoy many more Rainbow songs! "I see a rainbow rising"... That line still gets me, chills and goosebumps every time! Masterpiece is an often overused word but in this case it's fully justified. OK, so this is the studio version synched over the live performance, so I'm guessing maybe the original live audio quality wasn't too good, but take nothing away from the actual song itself. I've listened to Stargazer so many times down the years I've lost count and it's still as amazing now as the first time it blew me away over four decades ago.
