Oh my. I'm so looking forward to this. Queensryche is one of 80s metal's best kept secrets. Their masterpice is the concept album Operation: Mindcrime, but picking any one song from that album to react to would be like watching one movie at random from the Harry Potter franchise. But it is well worth checking out for your own enjoyment. Imagine that voice and those musicians telling a story ranging from revolutionary hubris, to doomed love, to amazingly beautiful despair. Every song on the album is a masterpice in its own right and the whole is so much more than the sum of its parts. That said, if you ever want to react to an album as a live stream or something, you could do a lot worse than O:MC. Cheers!

    • @allieren

Totally agree. Queensrÿche were so underrated and I think it was all a matter of timing. In 1984, new wave was dominating and in the latter part of the 80s I feel like they were in the shadow of bands like GnR. I think Empire came out right around the time that Nirvana’s Nevermind album did and again, they were overshadowed by the phenomenon that was the introduction of grunge music at the time. I was a freshman in high school and Empire was definitely in the rotation, but like most of my peers I was totally caught up in bands like Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and The Smashing Pumpkins. I’m only recently fully discovering how awesome Queensrÿche really was.

I laughed reading this (you got teenage me pegged), because as a teenager in the late 80s I was all about thrash and punk and Queensryche was "too cheesy" in their sound for me. Until Operation Mindcrime; I was digging the concept album thing, at least. I like this now, though I think I can still hear some of that "cheesy" quality, like it pushes closer to the glam sound, which I have never liked, than it does classic metal like Priest or Maiden. If you watch a lot of the old concert footage and even pay attention to his speaking voice interviews over the years, his voice starting dropping during Operation Mindcrime, and continued to do so through the 90’s. He gained a richer low end baritone at the expense of his upper range. Some say it was cigarette smoking, but most guys continue to have their voices drop through their 20’s, so it might just be his genetics.

That being said, your reaction was the most informative and well done video by far! You just took top slot in the professional reaction category.
Also love that you put a lot of the comments or insights just as text, so you don't have to constantly stop the video to give your input.

I have been to seen Queensrythe since the mid 80s Geoff Tate was the best. I am 74yo and have seen him probably 25 times. As with all vocalists as they age their voice range diminishes. He was the best. My late wife loved them. I cry every time I hear “Eyes Of A Stranger”. It feels good.

Take Hold of The Flame was my introduction to Queensryche. I was in a supermarket at the time in about 1986 and this song came on over the speaker system. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I heard the band's name at the end of the song and went home and started looking through my Columbia House (no internet back then) papers to see if I could find reference to them. I found two albums (no CDs back then only cassette tapes and LPs) listed; The Warning and Rage for Order. Ordered them both and when they arrived played them both to try to find this song. I was so overwhelmed with all of the songs on both albums I couldn't even remember which song I heard over the supermarket intercom at first. I was hooked on Queensryche from that time onwards. They're still my favorite band even after all of the drama of later years.
