      Damn...I was about to say that no metal concept album touches it. Then I read a few more comments...but yes, Abigail is def one that ranks right up there too, but if you combine the actual album, commercial success, and the tour then Mindcrime is probably the best. Also one of the greatest concerts I've seen. Saw them twice that year. They opened for Metallica on the Justice tour. Metallica already played a min of 3 hrs back then, but you had that and Queensryche playing the entire album, from start to finish, as the opening act. Good, good times.

      Exactly. Listen enough, and Mindcrime feels part of you. At that point, you discover that the EOAS radio version--what she reviewed--feels very abrupt, like it's missing the richest dimension of what the Ryche is offering through this masterpiece. (Her intuition was spot on, that it felt like there should have been more to the song.) It'd be delightful to her her take on this same song after getting to know the story. It's like the difference between reading a poem, and feeling it.

    Tate was on another level, vocally, during this era. Very few vocalists in this genera could compare - then or now. As good as the vocals were, I think the writing of DeGarmo and the rythm and pocket that Rockenfield and Jackson laid down are often overlooked. The guitar work never overpowers the musicicality of these songs. This lineup was as complete a package as existed in this era.

    So - I've listened to metal since the 80s - and even to this day, where I've listened to more music - Operation: Mindcrime remains the sole "perfect" album that simply has NO bad songs - especially if you listen from start to finish - in order, because it's also a concept album - so it all tells a story. Operation: Mindcrime is a front to back masterpiece. Fates Warning is also one of the godfathers of prog metal. I got into both bands around the same time in the 80's and I fell in love with the genre back then. The intricacies, time changes and mix of classical elements were huge for me as a kid. I was able to see both bands on tour a couple years ago and it was kind of a dream come true. Both bands were amazing. Ray Alder (singer for Fates Warning) still sounds amazing 30+ years later. If you ever listened to the song resulting from RJD's Hearing Aid project back in the 1980s, there was pretty much Geoff Tate & then everyone else. No mistaking him. If you like guitar, it was the same with Yngwie Malmsteen on that project. So many metal gods were involved in that. If you're not old enough to remember those Ethiopian hunger days, you really should seek it out. Probably on TH-cam. Haven't checked.

      Yes that’s right. This album is a concept album. Each song is like a chapter in a book or a movie scene. In this clip the music got cut out early.
      The cinematic sound design was deliberate ahead of many bands at the time. Tons of production value. It was and is only done by progressive bands. Back when listening to music for hours and buying albums was an activity to loose yourself and take a trip.
      If you listen 🎧 to the whole album from the start you be assured goosebumps throughout 👌🏼

    This entire album Operation: Mindcrime, from beginning to ending is truly a wonderful experience. Many people probably have suggested that you listen the whole thing. Do yourself a favor. This album has been out for decades its message is as poignant today as it was then. Eyes of a Stranger is the final song of the cyclical story of how protagonist ended up in that hospital. I watch enough of your videos to know you love stories. And Geoff Tate is playing the main character of a tragic love story.
    Also, Operation: Livecrime their release of the entire album live. I still have the VHS and CD of Operation: Livecrome box set on my Bookshelf. lol. i don't have a VHS or cd player anymore :)
    This album has been on my list since I was a child driving to mountains with my uncle. As my understanding of the story and message increased as I got older I liked it that much more. Do yourself a favor, nerd out, you will not regret it.

    She makes several references to the lyrics here. Coming from a concept album you can't look at the lyrics strictly from this song but need to look at them in the context of the whole album. The lines about him looking into the mirror and staring into the eyes of a stranger are about him not recognizing himself as he remembers everything he did in the story. The line "rosary wrapped around your throat" is a reference to an earlier song where he finds Sister Mary hanging. The character in the story is definitely tortured.

      Absolutely! DeGarmo is killer at being able to create atmosphere and blistering solos that fit the track perfectly…they blaze but don’t overdo it, just long enough to enjoy but not bore you, etc. including his rhythm playing, very unique riffs and you know it’s him for sure just by hearing the style. Chris is definitely an unsung hero in metal

    Operation: Mindcrime is a complete story, start to finish. Essentially you are “starting” with the final chapter, so the institution might seem out of context for the song. I’d highly suggest giving the entire album a listen to appreciate the fantastic story (as well as the phenomenal music and vocals). This truly is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest concept albums ever made, and I’m a Rush fan, but this one album turned me into a Queensryche fan for life. I became a loyal member of their “Empire” fan club and saw them about 15 times live, including backstage meets with the band. Absolutely one of the best bands in my book.

    • @DD-ef2os
      @DD-ef2os 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree. While every song on the album is great as a stand alone song... to fully appreciate each song, it should be listened to in its entirety. Hands down the best concept album ever, in my opinion. A whole album review would be awesome, but I would really like to see something from MTV Unplugged reviewed. Since it's a live acoustic performance, she can get a really good dose of Tate's vocal abilities without too much production added. Though from the 3 songs she's reviewed, I can tell she picks up on all the glorious expression and nuances that make his voice one of the purest and best in rock/metal.

    Operation: Mindcrime is Queensryche's magnum opus, and was when Geoff Tate was at the peak of his powers. It's also one of the best concept albums in rock, ever. This whole album was my absolute favorite album, period, for quite a few years back in the day. If you want to do a review of the entire album, they had a concurrent release of a live rendition of the album, called Operation: Livecrime. The look on your face with every Queensryce song you that you react to. I have seen them live several times. Geoff Tate is the most soothing, intense, beautiful voice I know !! But hands down my favorite, queensryce concert was in a theater !!!! Merrillville Indiana, they performed, Operation Mindcrime 1 & 2. It was amazinnnnng. Geoff's voice echoed thru that theater, it was beautiful,,, rock/opera. He knows how to use the acutics in a theater very well. Living in Indiana in the 90s not a lot of my friends listened to queensryce (just the cools ones) had heard of. But I lived in Washington and another of people listened to them ad turned me on this journey loving this band. I love all queensryce music (especially Chris DeGarmo/Geoff Tate). I would suggest. Operation mind crime 1 & 2 back to back in private. So you can 25:1 listen straight thru on your headphones. Then listen to Jet City Women, EMPIRE.. definitely this one.. maybe then Bridge.. so many though I'd be here all day !! Have fun discovering more of their music !!

The stories they tell on Operation: Mindcrime are a provocative time capsule of 80s and 90s political, religious and pop culture. Some of the songs could be written today with just a few minor tweaks.
