The memory of RJD fighting Denzil....man....that was crazy to a youngster like myself back in the day....it has always stuck with me...but not as strongly as his RJD's voice....man....that incredible haunting voice.... good times.
I remember when it happened... my dad and I were driving down the road and it was announced on the radio. We went home and pounded Dio for days.... the neighbors were mad but we didn't care!
Let's just take a moment to appreciate the collosal drumming of Cozy Powell. Brutal precision. Seamless quadruple bass and toms on the intro. Very difficult to play.
"I see a rainbow rising, up there on the horizon" - for the last 35 years literally every time I have listened to it, I get goosebumps at exactly this point, like clockwork. One of the greatest songs ever.
It hit me like a ton of bricks. We all knew it was coming, hoped it wasn't, but deep down those of us following his battle with cancer knew. It affected me so much that I went to the public memorial at Forest Lawn. It was one of the best AND worst days of my life. It was amazingly good to celebrate Ronnie's life and be around all those people who loved him, but it was horrible knowing that he was gone forever. I'm extremely glad that I went. I'll never get over his death, but it helped me deal with it.
When I heard of his death I had to blast through side 2 of Rising and "Something's calling me back Like a light in the black Yes, I'm ready to go I'm coming home Home, yeah! I'm on my way back home Look to the sky There in the sky I see a star" had me in floods. A true star, now singing with the celestial choir.
Ronnie James Dio loved being in Rainbow when they were in their heyday. I’m sure that’s why he mentions ‘Rainbow’ in a lot of his songs after he parted ways with Richie Blackmore. I mean he even mentioned (or sang) the word rainbow in the Band Aid but better Hear N Aid collaboration song! I feel so bad for Elizabeth that she never got to meet him (well I could be wrong, maybe she did?) I’m sure she would have loved to have interviewed him for the Charismatic Voice and I’m sure Ronnie would have enjoyed talking with her also. Such a huge loss. RIP Ronnie James Dio, you made it to the top of the tower and became a star that will never be forgotten.
Agreed, but with me the goosebumps come and the tears fall when he cries out "Time is standing still. Give me back my will! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!" And again with "My eyes are bleeding, and my heart is leaving here. Wish, not hope! Wish, not hope! Oh!" I know the official lyrics appear to be different, but I'm pretty sure they're wrong.
I had the honor... (that word doesn’t even say enough) of spending a few moments with Ronnie.. still have his number in my phone (can’t delete it). Dio was an actor, he became the song.. he put himself in role of his characters in his songs. He was a great great man. A perfectionist and some would say difficult to work with at times, but his results were second to none. The world is a lesser place without him... but he left us so many gifts. From his Ronnie and the redcaps “An Angel is Missing” where he is singing 50s style music, all the way to the power of Strange Highways with the song Jesus Mary and the Holy Ghost. Ronnie was one of a kind and i for one am absolutely fortunate enough to say he filled my childhood with joy and later... proved to me what an artist is... and to this day i can’t help but get choked up hearing the man... on the silver mountain.. he will always be.. the man.
I had the pleasure of meeting RJD in November 1984. He was a gentleman, a pro's pro. And what a voice! I would love to see Elizabeth's reaction to "Kill The King," "Lady Of The Lake" or "Rainbow Eyes."
Thus there was some stuff taken from Zeppelin's Kashmir... Not enough to be sued for plagiarism (or J.Page was so much into dope in 1976?), but still very noticeable
@@jamiemascola6614 : Cliff Burton and Steve Harris were absolute fans of King Crimson... Ever listened to Starless & Bible Black (1974) or Red (1974) albums as well as Larks' Tongues in Aspic (1973)? And even the song 21st Century Schizoid Man in 1969? There was fuzz even on the voice! The Call of Ktulu was a simplified carbon-copy of Fracture, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Pt.2 intro is already true blue power metal! And I wouldn't be surprised if there were Magma fanboys too : lisen to the song "De Futura" on their 1976 Üdü Ẁüdü LP!!! The influence of MC5 is also often quoted for both power-metal and punk-metal... "Kick out the Jams MFs!!!!" in the middle of the flowerpower era! Actually, the Rainbow/Dio era is more hippie than the prog guys in King Crimson or Magma who were surely prog, but no hippies at all...
I never heard Stargazer before tonight. What a thrill beyond words. I cranked it up.Then I found Elizabeth's analysis and I knew I had to listen and watch her face while she absorbed this song. What an experience. I'll never forget this. I'll be back plenty of times to go on this journey with Rainbow again. Loved it.
This song was Ritchie Blackmore's answer to Led Zeppelin's Kashmir. Dio's outro here is just epic mixed with the keyboard fade out. Blackmore was absolutely on fire as well. Just an absolute masterpiece.
RJD was Edgar Allen Poe, Pavarotti, Da Vinci, and Robin Hood rolled into 1 guy. He gave back to the fans so much in many ways. His canvas was the stage. Greatest songwriter and storyteller that ever picked up a Mic and sang. Generational. By all accounts, he was an even better human being off stage.Very generous man.
Don't forget Ian Gillan. Pavarotti called him the best rock singer he's ever heard. A force of nature. If you look on the internet, you will see Gillan and Pavarotti performing together live. I believe in the Sydney Opera House. Ian Gillan picked to do Jesus Christ Superstar lp. RIP RJD 🙏 Both exceptional singers in their own right.
...I was lucky enough to work at a small record store that hosted Dio for a "Meet-n-greet" deal on the 'Magica' tour cycle. As great of a singer as RJD was, he was an even more impressive human being. He walked in and greeted my bosses who he had met ONCE - like...decades prior - "Hey, Brian! Hello Don! How is your mom doing?" It was ...unreal. He was so gracious with his time and energy - met and spoke at length with every single person who came out to the event. I have friends who were there and they all still comment about it and how ...awesome he was. After the last person had been through the line, Ronnie did a little shopping and asked what was new and good and we all told him about Opeth - he grabbed several of their albums. When he was done shopping he did something really weird - he went up to the register and wanted to PAY for all of his selections. My bosses about fell over themselves explaining "Look - this is the most business we've had in weeks - we arent taking your $ ...please!". He insisted. He then got every employees name and put us all on the guest list for the show that night. Which, was simply incredible. Being an older guy - Dio was one of the 1st shows I ever went to back on his 2nd solo album tour. This show was even better. Magical. Made all the more so simply knowing what a kind and gracious and engaging human the man was. I hope that as time goes on, his work will keep being discovered by kids everywhere. It certainly deserves to be. Love your channel. Keep up the good work!
We aII get there, those of us always seeking something more. I've been a metal head since right before Master Of Puppets dropped. Now my grown older son and I both go to metal shows. 😎🤘🙌
I was very fortunate to have been given Ronnie's Connecticut home phone number by him in 1978 after a brief but extremely cordial conversation with him. I had this access through my good friendship with Black Sabbath's personnel manager Mark Forster who was friends with Rainbow's road manager (they all know each other). A few months later, I called Ronnie at home and spoke about song construction and how they took the Yardbirds melody to recreate the Gregorian Chant "Still I'm Sad", and though we talked about Stargazer, he was particularly fond of the song "Rainbow Eyes" from their just released "Long Live Rock and Roll" album in 1978. and encouraged me to listen closely to it, that it was a departure yet so very proud of it. So, Elizabeth, mine and Ronnie's recommendation for your next review would be "Rainbow Eyes".
Rainbow Eyes is such a beautiful song. I think I heard that he made it for his wife Wendy. This song show he can do it all. We know he can belt out a song, but this is closer to the heart. Nice choice.
Another vote for Rainbow Eyes. An interesting fact about this song is that, for whatever reason, it is slighly sharp in pitch. Might be a conscious decision or just an artifact from the recording process.
Not for nothing but that was a hell of a lot of name dropping just to recommend one of the better songs from Rainbow. You even mentioned Connecticut which is impressive
Since Dio’s death, the end of this song makes me cry. The coming home line and the rainbow imagery just melts my heart as I imagine him leaving his mortal coil and ascending to the next plane of existence.
Me too on the crying part. Miss him so much. I finally watched the documentary they did on him. Really dont understand Blackmore refusing to participate. Anyway, I cried like a baby at the end.
This is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Dio's vocals are so pure, emotional, and intense. If his vocals in this song doesn't hit one in the feels, they have no emotions :-)
I always thought that this is a fundamental power metal song. Dio was an inspiration to a lot of power metal bands and this songs was probably one of the most epic pieces composed in '70 if not the most epic.
I have probably listened to this song 1000 times over the years. Ronnie’s performance, particularly in the last couple of minutes, never fails to give me goosebumps. The look on your face and in your eyes during that part (and in all of your Dio reactions) perfectly reflect that same sense of awe. Thank you for helping to honor his absolute genius and expose it to new generations. I was lucky enough to meet Ronnie and was in awe of how humble and down to earth he was. Thank you for helping to keep his memory alive.
Stargazer is one of the few songs that I still remember the first time I heard it. It catches you instantly. I specifically enjoyed Elizabeth's face expresions as she heard it through. It shows the feeilings and deep emotion that this song generates and, to me, this is what art is all about.
By the conclusion of your video I literally had tears in my eyes. The way you reviewed this masterpiece of song, both technical and emotionally let me and millions like me know that you, in all of your musical Knowledge... GET IT!!! You have expressed what we Dio admirers have felt and experienced for so long, so elegantly and elucidated so clearly. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the validation you have given Dio fans all over the world. I just wish he'd have lived to hear your words. God bless you.
It's good to see Ronnie finally getting the respect he deserves from the Classical community. Years from now, Universities will dedicate an entire music theory course to Dio.

I love when this channel does metal reactions. Pantera, Iron Maiden, Dio. Us metal fans know how technically impressive these vocals are, but it feels so rewarding watching a trained vocal coach validating what we already know. So happy to sub to this.
One of the best songs in the history of rock music, after Dio's passing this song inevitable leads me to tears, so emotional and so pure. Looking forward so much to this, Thank you Elizabeth.
Indeed Dio is missed a lot. This song and the whole Rising album for me is a mark in rock/metal history, it influenced so much bands in the years to come, especially power/neoclassical metal.
This is the tip of the largest vocal iceberg in history. The sheer scope of Ronnie's music has taken me over 50 years to digest and experience. Every time you think you have heard all he had to offer, he would do something else to completely blow you away and the bar would be even higher than you ever thought possible. I have over 100 live unedited live bootlegs from his entire career and there isn't ONE bad SONG, let alone performance. He was simply the most consistent and brilliant singer I have ever heard.
I have never heard him have an "off" night, ever. EVERY single time he took the stage, he brought it 100%. An outstanding talent and a true professional in an industry full of divas.
This song is incredible. If you want Lord of the Rings rock and haven't heard it, consider "The Battle of Evermore" by Led Zeppelin. Haunting. Might be my favourite wind-down song after a night out
If you like literal Lord of the Rings music you need to listen to Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middleearth album. Speed and Powermetal at its best! Their singer Hansi has wonderful pipes too, one of the most recognizable bands that still pump out godly albums and tour to this day.
As a Ronnie James Dio fan since the Elf era, and a rock journalist for 45 years, I think I just watched some of the finest breakdown and analysis of a hard rock singer's voice and vocal style in my life. What a treasure trove of voice and music knowledge you are! Not only that, you totally understood the story and meaning of the song, which was one of our anthems in high school in 1976. I know very few young people who fully get "Stargazer", but you nailed it. Bravissima! Thank you so much. Count me in as a new fan.
Elizabeth you are a joy to listen to explaining singing in general. Being a music lover but not an aficionado u help a lot by ur explanations. Man, I wish RJD was still around for you to be able to talk to him that would’ve been so amazing to hear that convo/interview. I tell you what he would’ve been so gracious and humble to hear the great things that u were saying about him. Thanks for your honest love of one of my greatest heroes
The great thing about Ronnie wasn't just how powerful and technically excellent he was, but the CONVICTION of the delivery. He meant every note and it comes through in how it sounds. He used every part of himself to project his voice. He was a god among men as a vocalist.
Obviously i love RJD, but "Mistreated" is David Coverdale and Deep Purple song, and Davids voice suits this song the best. I recomendet California Jam 1974 live version, i love this show, and this is amazing version.
God designed special vocal chords for Ronnie James Dio. His pipes are thermonuclear and he sings literally right through the audience. Those of us who saw Dio perform with Rainbow will never forget it. For $10 he assassinated me; a privilege and honor I won't forget. His band mates are world class too-- an incredible composition. Glad you dove into this one Elizabeth!!
This is one of those instances where the whole is much more than the sum of its parts. I don't think Rainbow ever matched this in subsequent lineups, even if later iterations did have some good moments.
This is in my top five albums, ever. I remember reading an interview with Ronnie James Dio about this song; its a group of slaves serving a wizard, who believes he can fly. They build him a tower, which he ascends, and when he jumps of, he falls to his death. The end of the song is about the slaves not knowing what to do, and having conflicted feelings about what to do next. Can't wait to see your reaction. Ronnie James Dio, RIP.
So the reason he’s singing “why? Just to see him fly?” Is because the promise and the reason for the sacrifice of the builders was that the wizard, Nimrod, was supposed reach Gods throne and kill him, and take His throne. Obviously, a fools errand, but it’s the same mission that has been sold to this generation of fools. LHC is the new Tower. And FWI, it’s similar tech to the tower back in Babylon. We are not the most advanced or smartest, we are the dumbest generation. Devolution is real.
That's exactly why Dio stood out. Apart from his powerful vocals, he was an amazing storyteller, he could make you believe his visions and his lyrics fit perfectly with the music
One of the most phenomenal rock tunes ever recorded. The flow, a phenomenal guitar solo, the effective use of "the drop" to build and release tension, the passion in Dio's voice, and the orchestra coming in as a climax. Absolutely superbly structured. Just wonderful.
Ronnie James Dios was a trumpet player before becoming a singer. He implemented the way he breathed when playing the trumpet to his singing technique and there you will find his secret for his godly singing.
The Stargazer saga continues on the next track. "A Light In The Black" is "Stargazer's" less appreciated twin sister that deserves to not be forgotten. I highly recommend reacting to it.
Definitely. Maybe not as impressive melody-wise but A Light In The Black is another epic song. A pity they hardly ever played it live. I read that it was exhausting especially for the late Cozy Powell to play it live. I think the guitar and keyboard solos are awesome. All in all, Rainbow didn't play much of "Rising" live which still makes me wonder... but they would play Mistreated from DP (that Ronnie re-invented, btw)
@@Marctull66 oh I know I think they didn’t like playing songs from rising much also because dio didn’t really like the album if you see some of his interviews he gives he says didn’t like making the album. the best concerts in my opinion with dio Is live in Munich 77 or the ultra rare box set tournee I have those
@@shiftstart I know right but 🤷🏻♂️oh well & he absolutely hated rainbow in the dark but after a good while he lighten up about that song think those three songs he felt it was too poppy & commercial
Elizabeth, my dear... I’ve come across your many “takes” on our great rock singers. Your passion and expression is so genuine. A ton of us old-school metal heads have known RJD’s, Bruce Dickenson’s, Rob Halford’s and Geoff Tate’s prowess since the late 70s through the late 80s. I love your reactions and it only reinforces our love for these great vocalists. It is SO refreshing to see others “discover” what has been there for over 30 frickin’ years! Keep it up my dear!
I also want to say that having discovering your channel has reignited our love for the classic metal bands. Bands i ignored for a short time. Or better yet I'm listening to the vocals in a different light.
@@Lonestar1430 But the keyboard playing and the participation of the Munich Philharmonic orchestra gives a very important "lift" to the song. I love that
@@KennCramerHanberg You're right, the orchestra give the song an incredible ending. In fact, almost all the songs of that era of Rainbow, specially that album (Rising) are masterpieces.
Ronnie had the voice of a giant. His ability to almost effortlessly project this amazing voice as if all he had to do was let it out has amazed me for decades. Wonderful man by all accounts too.
That whole outro when he's going "I'm coming home!", I was driving from NJ to far upstate NY and listening to the tribute show Eddie Trunk did just a couple days after he died, and so many rock and metal artists called in and talked about Ronnie for hours...but he played Stargazer and I had to pull over and literally cry during that outro. It's like he was already calling to us from the afterworld, saying "I'm alright". Maybe a bit silly but that's how much this man and his music meant to all of us.
@@patrickharris1340 Rainbow Eyes is a gorgeous song. It was one of those songs that I listened to on repeat the first time I heard it. Catch the Rainbow is also a good song.
This version of Rainbow was an absolute powerhouse! Dio on vocals, Blackmore on guitar and Cozy freaking Powell on drums. Shame it didn't last, but it was great while it did.
You really broke down, laid out, & explained one of the significant songs of my teens. Im 60 and it still moves me & gets the housework done. Awesome seeing a nice singing teacher like yourself responding to it too. Peace in an imperfect world. D
One of the greatest drum fills of all time opens this track, and the late, great Cozy Powell is the not-so secret sauce to this amazing, timeless song. Glad you enjoyed it so much.
Fun fact, Dio learned and developed the breathing technique he used while singing, from playing the trumpet. Saw him live with Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath) in Oslo shortly before he died, the man had such a incredible presence. You need to listen to Rainbow in the Dark, one of my absolute favorite songs from his solo career.
Never saw that tour, but I do remember hearing a few tracks from Killing The Dragon, at which point Ronnie was in his early 60s. His voice wasn't quite as strong as it was in the '80s, but it was still strong. I'm sure a lot of that was he learned the proper way to sing, unlike, say, Roger Daltrey.
Ritchie Blackmore in his peak, with a legendary lineup of his Rainbow, Cozy Powell on drums with double base and the best Rock voice that walked on this planet!!!
@@stevenbirchall8554 But you could also say that if it wasn't for Jon Lord and Ian Paice collectively, nobody would have heard of Ritchie. Wheels within wheels my friend!
If you're looking for another Dio/Rainbow song to do, you should listen to the song right after Stargazer. It's called A Light in the Black. It's the after story of the time after the wizards death. Please keep it in mind.
Honestly, this song is one of my favourites of all time. It means a lot to me. I've heard it tons. Watching your enthusiasm and excitement in key moments that often would stir an ASMR tingle in me has left me full of emotion. I'm in tears. Thank you for pointing out the beauty of this song
I just started listening to Dio lately and I’ve never heard a song like that in my life the way it builds and builds and builds and his voice just carries it through effortlessly, phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal !
Thoroughly agree... This is a masterpiece by itself, but if you take into account how much this have influenced rock and metal, it's absolutely huge! The epic side of metal comes from this. This piece embodies the thought that rock/metal is not just about aggression but also emotions and atmosphere.
Metalheads were so lucky back in the 70's and 80s. Dio, Halford, Coverdale, Plant, Dickinson, and yes Ozzy too. Some of these guys could sing too. Every singer, present and future could stand to learn many lessons from these people. I was so lucky to see RJD when he visited Australia just a few months before he passed. To see one of my idols so close up, giving his all as usual. Stage presence personified! I very much doubt we'll ever see another vocalist with such a talent for the dramatic.
Add Ian Gillan to that list as well. Seen em all multiple times in their primes. Yes, the late 70s to the early 90s was truly an awesome time for live music
"Despite being known for his powerful singing voice, Padavona [Dio] claimed to have never received any vocal training. He instead attributed his singing ability to the use of breathing techniques he learned while playing trumpet." ~ Wikipedia
OMG, I absolutely LOVE your expressions and reactions. They are so precious and genuine and fill me with such joy, the same joy I get from listening to music. I am so happy I found your channel.
In my very strong opinion of Dio performing Stargazer, it was the best vocal performance by anyone, on any song, ever. I'm yet to hear anything else that comes close just in the raw emotional depth of feelings I get from this particular performance.
One of the best. I love Pearl Jam’s Black MTV Unplugged as well, and Alice In Chain’s Nutshell MTV Unplugged. Deep Purple’s live Child in Time. All of those performances are amazing!
Elizabeth you are the embodiment of the human capacity for joy and as amazing as that song is , its only made more incredible by the genuinely raw and honest feelings you expressed while listening to it. It was a double gift in watching you take so much pleasure in it. Thank you. I sense an amazing person in you with a genuine soul.
I felt the exact same way. This is the first video I've seen of hers....and I was blown away by the genuine joy and 'caring' she brought to this. It made my night watching her react to a song I've loved for 35 years.
I don’t have any musical experience, just a fan of music. This song touches the listener emotionally and viscerally. I literally tear up every time. There’s something magical and special about this song. Seriously, it’s more than a song, it’s an emotional experience.
As someone who has absolutely loved Ronnie nearly my entire life, watching your videos and following your journey into more and more appreciation of him puts a huge smile on my face. If you're interested in learning more about him beyond his musical career, his autobiography Rainbow In the Dark that was released last year is an amazing book to read. My girlfriend at the time got me a copy signed by Wendy Dio for my birthday and following his journey as it was written is almost overwhelming.
@@steveguse4481 sadly I haven't seen it yet. The only two nights it was showing where I am I already had plans with both my kids, though I did manage to take my young son to his first Iron Maiden show that same weekend, so the trade-off was acceptable 😂 Still hoping to catch it as soon as I can though
Ronnie James was an amazing man...so nice , so kind besides talented...he was the one that explained to a lot of up and coming bands over the years...like Lindsey Hail among so many...No matter how tired you are , no matter how many cities and places you go , remember to treat your fans with respect , you wont remember it , but they will remember meeting you forever
That's something a LOT of celebrities today forget, or twist into a "I'm the important one so your worship of me is expected" bullshit. THE FANS ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS
one time here in my city Monterrey México he invited to eat with him and the band on the table...!! in his hotel before a Festival with Dokken, Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister!! :)
Dio always had time for his fans. He understood his fans made his career. Well, that and his amazing vocals. Also he invented the "sign of the devil" ImI ImI
Dio was an amazing singer and an amazing frontman, but he was an even better ambassador for rock and metal. Obviously skills pay the bills, but his personality was just as important to his legacy. Such a wonderful human being.
Ronnie Padavona was an ego-tripper. He thrived on positive reviews. Negativity on his behalf was a no-no. That's why he clashed with Blackmore and Iommi. Small man, huge ego. A bit of a dick, really. Still a great singer with an incredible voice, mind.
For me, a 35 year metal fan, you've just reacted to perhaps the greatest metal song ever. It's hard to not miss Ronnie when listening to this. Especially towards the end f the song, where you can just feel the emotion coming off of him.
@@TheCharismaticVoice the amount of self-control to not listen any of Dio's other epic songs for reaction purposes, must be killing you on the inside... and, is this song on Beat Saber? I'm curious.
I'm a guitarist myself, and as far as what influenced how I play a lot of it came from players like Hendrix, Clapton, Alex Lifeson, and David Gilmour. But I've always been fascinated by Ritchie Blackmore.
Your knowledge, expertise and training does not blind you from the emotional drive of the artist. You totally get it and the fact that you catch all the different cultural influences is so amazing!
I was very fortunate to see Dio the band in a relatively small venue ..about 1500 people ..half way through All the Fools Sailed Away...he turned off his mic..threw it aside..and kept singing over the instruments..almost effortlessly (although he was taking in deeper breaths)..Dio was amazing..the best

Saw him in Düsseldorf/Philipshalle in (Germany) way back in 1978 I think. Has been the very best concert I ever visited. And I`ve seen a lot in the late 70ies and 80ies.
That's awesome. I saw him live with Heaven & Hell in 2007 and he was still kicking so much ass. That whole band was so great; probably one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
"I SEE A RAINBOW RISING!" that's the moment when the tears start flowing. Ronnie James DIO is, and will always be my favorite singer of all times and genres. Pd: You should listen to Children of The Sea. DIO displays dinamics on that one.
Oh, man. That line hits me just the same. Tears, every time. Beautiful line, and the way he sings it... This song is a masterpiece from start to finish.
It would be great to analyse the next song on the album, Light In The Black, basically part II of Stargazer. It was only rarely ever played as a pair in concert, sad. So it would need to be the studio version.
U have brought a tear to my eye, to hear your interpretation of one of my most adored singers of all time. I have seen Dio live twice once in the old Spectrum in Philadelphia and then in a small venue in Smyrna Delaware where I was able to get all the way up front and had the best concert experience of my life. The joy in your facial expressions are priceless, you are a true doll l love you!!!
Dio will appeal to the voice teacher in Elizabeth, as well as the swords and sorcery geek in Elizabeth. She truly never had a chance to evade Ronnie. She fumbled her save with a 1. And we get to cherish the carnage.
Thank you! I remember dropping Stargazer in the comments a couple of months back so this made me happy 😁 Cozy Powell's drumming right at the intro hooked me to this song and ultimately led me to Rising, which I consider to this day the greatest hard rock album ever. Some other songs you should check out: Kill the King, Man on the Silver Mountain, Catch the Rainbow and the continuation of this song, A Light in the Black ❤ Also since you like Fantasy, I think you'd enjoy Uriah Heep. Perhaps can start with Lady in Black or The Magician's Birthday (and no worries, take your time not an urgent request). Have a great weekend ~

I have been listening to this song for well over thirty years, and I still get goosebumps every time I hear the line, "I see a rainbow rising."
I only discovered Rainbow a couple of years ago. I've been making up for lost time ever since.
In my opinion, this is the greatest rock vocal performance of all time.

Ronnie was one of a kind and i for one am absolutely fortunate enough to say he filled my childhood with joy and later... proved to me what an artist is... and to this day i can’t help but get choked up hearing the man... on the silver mountain.. he will always be.. the man.

By all accounts, he was an even better human being off stage.Very generous man.

...I was lucky enough to work at a small record store that hosted Dio for a "Meet-n-greet" deal on the 'Magica' tour cycle.

Ronnie could make both Angels and Demons go headbanging like crazy, embrace each other and just enjoy true ART. Just like we did.
Can't argue with THAT!
It’s my opinion that Rainbow Eyes is the most beautiful piece of music ever written.

This is in my top five albums, ever. I remember reading an interview with Ronnie James Dio about this song; its a group of slaves serving a wizard, who believes he can fly. So the reason he’s singing “why? Just to see him fly?” Is because the promise and the reason for the sacrifice of the builders was that the wizard, Nimrod, was supposed reach Gods throne and kill him, and take His throne.

To me this is not just about Dio but Rainbow as a group. Everyone in the band made this song fantastic... a true masterpiece!
That's what happens when 3 genius get together: Dio, Blackmore and Cozy.
Something Ritchie Blackmore was never able to comprehend.
The way Cozy all most plays the melody - freaking loves it - Dio and Robert Plant will forever be the top of Rock `n Roll singers
Maybe a bit silly but that's how much this man and his music meant to all of us.
love that story ! I'm going home....going haooooome, my eyes are bleeding and my heart is leaving here !!
yeah bullshit
The outro always gets to me but the whole song stirs up so much emotion in me it will always be the best song ever written.
@UCi8p1-O4v5kWPtDMp9tIN0A eff off
You just made tears come to my eyes.
I nominate "Catch The Rainbow" for the next Dio analysis. Just for the chance to hear Dio rocking a softer song and doing it amazingly well as usual.
Rainbow eyes and catch the rainbow are easily some of my favourite songs of all time.
The live in Munich is a great version
Check out his performance on "Wonderworld" (from the album Elf - Trying to Burn the Sun). Another amazing one.
I'll second this suggestion. Dio's vocals combined with Blackmore's haunting guitar are truly amazing on Catch a Rainbow
Dont forget the great tony carey on keyboards !! 😊😊
...or Jimmy Bain on bass!
Cozy was a freaking MONSTER
First time I saw Dio, around 95 at a dive named Zippers. The last time was that same tour with Heaven and Hell before he died, RIP Ronnie 🙏
Dio also sang Doo-Wop and early 50s styled rockabilly too. Check out Ronnie Dio and the Prophets!
@@cisana98
Ritchie Blackmore in his peak, with a legendary lineup of his Rainbow, Cozy Powell on drums with double base and the best Rock voice that walked on this planet!!!
Tony Carey on the keys rocked too
And let us not forget legendary bassist Jimmy Bain who was also in the Dio band.
Great voice but if not for Ritchie nobody would have ever heard him!!!¡!!!!!!!!!¡
@@stevenbirchall8554 But you could also say that if it wasn't for Jon Lord and Ian Paice collectively, nobody would have heard of Ritchie. Wheels within wheels my friend!
@@colrhodes377 yes they were the big three but Ritchie was too good to never be heard from
If you're looking for another Dio/Rainbow song to do, you should listen to the song right after Stargazer. It's called A Light in the Black. It's the after story of the time after the wizards death. Please keep it in mind.
Your genuine enthusiasm for and enjoyment of this is infectious. I’m smiling along with you. I’m so happy I got to see him live.
I'm always brought to tears by the end of this song. It's power is undeniable... Ronnie is undeniable!
Gets to me every time.
Always.
I thought I was the only one, have no idea exactly why but my emotions go through the roof when I listen to this epic masterpiece!
Dio is the kind of singer that I regret not knowing about earlier so I could have spent more of my time enjoying his music.
it's never too late!
No doubt.
@@davidmiller8055 what do you mean when you say poser?
@@davidmiller8055 still a great voice ,Lemmy was real no doubt but you cant call Dio a poser ...come on !
Honestly, this song is one of my favourites of all time. It means a lot to me. I've heard it tons. Watching your enthusiasm and excitement in key moments that often would stir an ASMR tingle in me has left me full of emotion. I'm in tears. Thank you for pointing out the beauty of this song
Me: I've heard this song like a zillion times.
Elizabeth: Do it again.
Me: Don't mind if i do.
Paul Rudd: Say it again.
The man tells stories about wizards and dragons, ... you had no chance Elizabeth :D
He has songs of wildebeests and angels. He has soared on the wings of a demon.
You must give your cape and scepter, to me! And a smaller one for KG!
He has rocked for a long, long time.
Lol
And sings like an Opera Singer. She really couldn't resist!
I just started listening to Dio lately and I’ve never heard a song like that in my life the way it builds and builds and builds and his voice just carries it through effortlessly, phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal !
"Catch The Rainbow" off of their (Rainbow's) first album is my recommendation for you. Great to see such love and appreciation for Dio.
Love the live '77 version too😊.
One of the greatest pieces of art humanity has ever created.
...абсолютно точно! Една от песните, след които не мога да слушам друго, а просто да пускам отново и отново...
Thoroughly agree... This is a masterpiece by itself, but if you take into account how much this have influenced rock and metal, it's absolutely huge! The epic side of metal comes from this. This piece embodies the thought that rock/metal is not just about aggression but also emotions and atmosphere.
Love this description!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeap. Think you are there lissen live and be high. That would be epic trip.
Bonn Scott RiP too had a fantastic voice, as good if not better than some mentioned above.
The burn album with Coverdale on vocals but Lord, Paice, Hughes, and Blackmore playing was just too fantastic.
Not exactly metal... but Steve Marriott.
Not to mention Geoff Tate, Sebastian Bach, Klaus Miene amongst numerous others
"Despite being known for his powerful singing voice, Padavona [Dio] claimed to have never received any vocal training. He instead attributed his singing ability to the use of breathing techniques he learned while playing trumpet." ~ Wikipedia
At 3:52 you can see his fingers mimick that
So he literally blew music and came out a singing god because of it?
Brass joke
I think the breathing technique was acquired from battling dragons
Ronnie was a savant. He picked up most of his singing technique from listening to the radio, including the operatic stuff that he used.
@@symbiosisai Until he took an arrow to the knee?
Of course you are right. Ain't it odd that people reply to these opinions with their lame favorites
Look up Heavy Metal, an animated sort of heavy rock opera, released years ago. I'm pretty sure this song is on the soundtrack. Very epic. RlP RJD 🤘
What'd you think of his documentary this year?
@@steveguse4481 sadly I haven't seen it yet. The only two nights it was showing where I am I already had plans with both my kids, though I did manage to take my young son to his first Iron Maiden show that same weekend, so the trade-off was acceptable 😂
Still hoping to catch it as soon as I can though
I have listened to this song on repeat all weekend. . .
@@TheCharismaticVoice the amount of self-control to not listen any of Dio's other epic songs for reaction purposes, must be killing you on the inside... and, is this song on Beat Saber? I'm curious.
@@TheCharismaticVoice I had a feeling you might! Enjoy! 😊❤
You might be the only one in the world who can interrupt a Dio song and it's completely ok. Great job!
My favourite Rainbow song, probably my favourite thing from all of Dio's work. I look forward to your reaction to his mastery.
🤯
Damn, that must have been bitchin. Saw him at a small place in Santa Monica, made my way all the way to the front, it was great.
My all time favourite band Rainbow in my opinion stargazer is the best heavy rock song ever written .it has everything including rocks best singer ever and a amazing line up of virtuoso musicians.Blackmore at his very best ,guitar playing from the gods and Dio vocals out of this world.dont forget cozy powell either a drumming legend 🤘💯
It feels like we've completely rewired Elizabeth's music taste. We getting a metal record soon? 😄
Are we? That would be simply epic for us lot...!!!
@@TejasShelar2498 Girl's gonna be using COMPRESSION TECHNIQUES!! 😍
Yes, and I was the 100th to give a thumbs up for that awesome comment.
I feel Dio knew that the Ancient Egyptian Pyramids were a catalyst in becoming an imprint of the stars and universe upon ones death.
Oh please x.x
Dio was on fire in the Rainbow/early Black Sabbath era ('75-'82) and even early solo material ('82-'85). So much power and greatness.
Yes he was!!
"I SEE A RAINBOW RISING!" that's the moment when the tears start flowing. Ronnie James DIO is, and will always be my favorite singer of all times and genres.
Pd: You should listen to Children of The Sea. DIO displays dinamics on that one.
Definitely , Dio songs always brings tears to my eyes. I miss the little guy 😢
It was only a matter of time!
That's some heavy D&D comment, loved it!
A Dio concert was like live D&D. Especially solo when he would battle something on stage.
@@deed5811 haha, nice! I myself consider Holy Diver's clip as Dio playing his own version of Dark Souls or Elder Scrolls, totally D&D vibes too!
Trying to win the internet today? ,😜👍👍
Thank you! I remember dropping Stargazer in the comments a couple of months back so this made me happy 😁 Cozy Powell's drumming right at the intro hooked me to this song and ultimately led me to Rising, which I consider to this day the greatest hard rock album ever. Some other songs you should check out: Kill the King, Man on the Silver Mountain, Catch the Rainbow and the continuation of this song, A Light in the Black ❤
Also since you like Fantasy, I think you'd enjoy Uriah Heep. Perhaps can start with Lady in Black or The Magician's Birthday (and no worries, take your time not an urgent request). Have a great weekend ~
Grossly underrated band. One of the greatest
I cannot say it enough. Cozy was a freaking MONSTER
Stargazer - RJD, Richie, Cozy Powell ... we're all still listening in 2021! Gold!
This is easily in my top 10 videos all-time on YT. I wasn't fortunate enough to ever meet Ronnie, but I truly feel like he would love your reaction and analysis of not only his voice, but one of the greatest songs ever. Cheers! 🤘
