- Raiden II is the second game in the famous Raiden series. It was the game that first featured the effect of shrapnel flying everywhere from explosions, which was really crazy for its time.
Raiden is the series that's pretty much the epitome of old Toaplan design. Almost everything shoots fast aimed bullets at you and you need to make sure you know all the locations of the enemies in order to not get sniped. There is also a heavy focus on pointblanking enemies and bosses for quick-kills. Like most old shmups, your hitbox is pretty huge and bombs take a second for them to actually go off (at least with the red bombs).
Raiden II is pretty notorious for its difficulty. The first loop is already about as hard as a 2-ALL of other games that follow the old Toaplan formula. This game loops infinitely and gets harder and harder every loop.
These old Raiden games are pretty much one-life games. Once you die once it's extremely hard to recover, if at all. I got super lucky this run since I got a full power item from a death, making it actually possible to recover. Getting a full power item from a death is extremely rare.
The color of the items are random. This can be really annoying and is often the cause of deaths (like in 2-3). Grabbing the wrong weapon is also instant death sometimes.
For secrets there is a secret medal randomly placed somewhere at the end of the stage. You can usually get these by remembering landmarks and sweeping horizontally at the bottom of the screen.
If you shoot a tree in stage 1 and 4 then you can get a fairy to pop out. These give you 10k points and also give you extra items when you die (usually doesn't help anyway).
For the stage 3 secret extend you need to have the popcorn tank run over the box. Easiest way to do this is to use the nuclear missiles to destroy the item carrier and then switch to homing missiles.
The easiest way to score in this game is to keep picking up the same type of bombs and not use them. If for example you have 7 red bombs in stock and you pick up another red bomb, then you get 50k.
The item order got a bit messed up because of the death in 1-5. The first item carrier in 1-7 is supposed to have a weapon drop but instead had a bomb drop. Luckily the second carrier still had a weapon drop.
I accidentally grabbed the nuclear missiles in 1-7 instead of the homing ones. This meant that I had to pick the red weapon for the latter half of the stage because otherwise I'd have no defense against the random popcorn.
This run was pretty much over as soon as I died in 2-3 but I still managed to limp to the 2-4 boss somehow.

This game reminds me of my childhood in the end of the 90s. Back then the U.S. Armed Forces still had military posts in the Republic of Panama; and in Fort Clayton they had the Recreation Center. I used to go there every sunday with my family, and I remember that there they had the arcade game itself of "RAIDEN 2". I used to love playing this game. My dad was always sure that I had enough quarters to pass the game!! Waaoo; those were really the good old days!! 😢😣😔
This cabinet was in every PX/BX and rec center overseas. Good times playing this growing up.

Wow, this game is like the battlefield 3 of shmups. Everything feels like it reacts rather realistically, and there is a lot of detail put into environmental effects. (for the time anyway.)
The way debris falls to the ground and leaves a dust cloud or splashes in the ocean, that tank in the water left a crater UNDER the water, the tank tracks, etc.
The part where I thought the detail was crazy at was at 18:00 - if you pay attention to where the bomb is dropped, there's a tree there...after the bomb, the tree is on fire. Seibu could've just removed the tree in instances like this, but they actually took the time to create the graphics for a burnt / burning tree.
The greatest shmup on Arcade :)
The walkers in the first stage also leave footprints and the bomber over the neighborhood, depending on where you shoot it down will destroy the house or knock off the part it hits
Goes to show you how much love and thought the creators put into this gem.

Back when both sidescrolling shooters (Gradius) and top-down shooters were popular this game still stood out, so ahead of its time graphically. This is still one of my all time favorite arcade games.

Yes it really is, they can keep the bullet hells the music and the graphics in this are amazing. I actually play a lot more of the original Raiden for the simple reason I don’t get my ass kicked, Raiden 2 is close to impossible on normal arcade settings.

I discoverd Raiden 1 in arcade, like everyone, and i loved the game. Later, maybe 1996, my father bought me the playstation, and, sure, i took Raiden Project with the console. I still have the game today, and run it sometimes... like, just few minutes ago.

This brings me back when I was a kid, I remember a pizza place I use to go to had Primal Rage, Tekken 2 and this game, Raiden II.
people these days don't understand that the new version of this game is actually too fast. it genuinely felt like it ran slower because of the slower hardware

I have a blast playing this masterpiece on PS1 emulator, switched my screen orientation so I can play in a TATE-like screen. Played on Major/Medium (Colonel is Original/Hard and General is Hardest) and my highest is 5.2M on MAJOR.

I used to bunk-ff school to play this in the arcades for hours on end. I've played A LOT of sh'mups but nothing ever comes close to this. The graphics, sound, music and gameplay is incomparable to anything else.

clouds are also reflected, every detail on this game is what makes it epic.

I remember I was like 13 around 1996. This game was 1$ to play once. The best I could do back then was reach stage 3... Good times though.
I really like the music in this game and I can clearly see some influence from it into Zun's themes for the Touhou franchise~

I was checking on Raiden 3 and 4. Explogion fragments animation is not even close Raiden 2. Some Grate animators work this Game out to this detail some of us Can apreatiate and some others cant see. Notice that this 2 animations are hand made, 3 and 4 is CG. Realy a grate game. To bad its so dam HARD.
I find it really strange that 3 and 4 have a higher resolution (at least it looks that way) and perfect animations but although all that they don't look better but worse. Just like the Simpsons. New episodes are smoothly animated but soulless, while the old were drawn and are more fun to watch (not to mention they're funny). They look a lot better in (my opinion) although or because they do not. Hard to explain.
Probably Sprites can't be beaten after all.

i just noticed the two red tri that leave every boss, what are the red tri's?
The red crystals are the aliens (could be life or machine), their special ability lets them control almost all the weaponry and war machines on the earth, so you are basically fighting a bunch of crystals that control the whole earth's army. You can read further information and background story in playthrough of Raiden V.

Purple laser has its use in stage 7, since it's better at getting rid of the random asteroids than Vulcan can. Apart from that all the other shots just do everything that purple laser does better.

No way purple is weak. Only weak for bosses. If you press it and take a seconds break it’s actually as strong as blue, but once it’s in its tracker beam state yes it’s not as strong. I kick ass with purple. Reds only good if you play close like this guy.
