Ninners were one of my favorite teams during that era. Rathman teamed with another Husker Great Roger Craig in the back field of some great Niner teams.
They’re not really comparable. Mike Alstott was a running back who played fullback. He was a much better runner than Rathman. But also a much worse blocker. Rathman was a perfect prototype fullback. Alstott was an amazing bulldozer type running back who occasionally played fullback.
To me Rothman exemplifies the quality of a great fullback. Short thick built like a tank. solid hands quick feet movement, fearless head down full charge ahead
@@rogermcguinn6926 He was second on the team in receptions in 1989 with 73 receptions behind only Jerry Rice. That is amazing. That team also featured John Taylor, Brent Jones, and Roger Craig.
Him and Craig deserve to be in. I may be a little biased because they are Huskers but damn were they good. I hope Nebraska can get back to that smashmouth attitude.
This was my favorite player as a kid. I’ve always loved fullbacks, and in the west coast offense, the fullback could be very productive. He would have TONS of receptions. Roger Craig played some fullback for Walsh. Harry Sydney would be brought in to lead block for rathman in short yardage. It is as if SF had three fullbacks on the roster at once.
He was a huge part of the 49ers success back then, the 49ers had nobody like him in the team that just lost to the chiefs just a week ago. I don’t think there’s anybody like him currently playing and may never be another Tom Rathman type player to emerge in the NFL again , sad but true
Different era of N.F.L. but that man was dominant back then. Someone explain to me why exactly this doesn't work in 2022 - 23?? Linebackers can become speedier stacking the middle but that just opens the edges. Rathman and the pitbull fullbacks of the 90's were so committed to carnage that if you didn't have a Top 5 Defense they (SF) were going to torch you. 1/3 of Jerry Rice's phenomenal statistics disappear without the backs that simply ground out yards from the opposing team. Every 5 yds. from Rathman, or whomever was handed off, earned the Niners 15yds. or more in the fourth quarter. Ground and pound is an N.F.L. term long before there ever was any UFC.
@@Six3SixTayAlstott got the Blueprint from Rathman you can’t mention Alstott without saying Rathman plus he did more than just run block and ran short route pass slots and was second in receptions to Jerry Rice one year.
73 receptions in a single season for a FB and 320 for his career. For perspective, Hall of Fame WR Lynn Swann managed only 336 receptions for his career.
Tom Rathman and Darryl Johnston were the best full backs in NFL history. Mike Alstott was a power running back and more athletic than Ratman and Johnstone.

There would have been no 49er dynasty without them.
Before there was Mike Alstott, there was TOM RATHMAN
yesss!! Rathman !!!!
Two of the most intimidating running backs ever!
Say that again bruh I told people on a Alstott video on here said you gotta mention Tom Rothman
Before there was Kyle Juszczyk, there was Tom Rathman.

One of my favorite all time players, along with Roger Craig.
To me Rothman exemplifies the quality of a great fullback.

As far as I am concerned best fullback of all time.
Man was that guy good. He should be in the Hall of Fame.

Huskers Craig and Rathman in the same backfield…. man o man, they were great
I was a fullback for a few years in HS and still am a 9ers fan. Tom Rathman was my hero growing up.
Rathman and Craig what a backfield
GBR!
I know the emphasis nowadays is on safety, but man, what an era to watch football
Rathman and Alstot were the last of a rugged breed.
Amen!
You can add Cory Schlesinger on that list as well. Another Husker out of Duncan Nebraska. Watch his highlights.
Rathman was a way better receiving threat, tho
The best enough said about Tom Rathman.
Rathman and Alstott were amazing .. great music for this !!!
Best FB of all time. I need to watch a Brett Jones video now.

John Riggins might have something to say about that
Tom, Rathman and Mike Allstadt needs to be in the Hall of Fame
I remember watching that Cleveland game on TV, the commentator shouting , "Rathman, runs over the top of Ellis".

Thanks for making this. Been waiting for someone to do it.

The fullback is a position that is effective, and some teams carry them. Some don’t
What a monster 🤘
Tom was an absolute Beast. Great hands. Great blocker and if you were dumb enough to get in his path you got drilled
Great blocker but he could catch the football all around fullback
lt shit a brick when he faced rathman
Such a beast! #MadRespect
Best fullback ever!!!
Ahhh not so fast I think Mike allstott was…& if not, a close 2nd.💪🏽

1:10 that's practically Eric Dickerson there! Good running.
From Rathman to juszczyk.
Kyle Juszczyk’s shirt brought me here.
Bring back the fullbacks!!!
1:12 was his first touchdown in his NFL career.
BEAST
Nebraska Kid right there!!!

Out of all the music ...this is what u chose
Exactly lol
What’s wrong with metal?
Tom Rathman and Roger Craig - both NU Cornhuskers - were KEYS to the 49er dynasty.
Catching the ball like that in those big ass shoulder pads. Talent plus want to equals ball player.
Husker POWER
My fave fullback for blocking was Devlin for the Patriots, though.
Roger Craig and Tom Rathman: "Nebraska Niners"
Old school TOUGH!
Mike Alstott’s dad right there!!
GBR!
so apparently my dad told me that he is my 3rd cousin can’t believe i’m related to one of the best FB in the league
Great blocker, great hands as a receiver, punishing runner. He made you pay for trying to tackle him.
He's a tank
I NEED TO KNOW THE SONG!!!??!?!?!!?😤😤😤😤
Tom Rathman and Darryl Johnston were the best full backs in NFL history. Mike Alstott was a power running back and more athletic than Ratman and Johnstone.
Is there a FB scholarship available every year for a grinder like this? #noexcuse
Farm boy out of Grand Island Nebraska
GBR
There's no achievement when facing the Browns ! It's not a highlight.
