In this video I restored an old Coffee Grinder, made by 'Clarks & Co.' in England
Age: I guess it´s age to 80-100 years
Restoring time: - around 3 weeks
Facts:
This beauty was made in England, and came with a 'Japanning' Finish. Since there were threads everywhere, i wasn´t able to restore the knob in its original way.
Techniques/materials:
For this restoration I chose two main techniques: hot bluing and 'Japanning'.
I chose hot bluing, because it´s the most natural way of bluing, without using strong chemicals. Why? Because the coffee beans get in contact with the grinder, so I wanted to have it in food grade quality.
'Japanning' is a technique, close to powdercoating, but ways older. You mix tar with turpentine and linseed oil, let it sit for a week, brush it on the bare metal and put it in the oven. After baking in 5 steps the result is pretty resistant and deep black.
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!

Handbook rescue has a couple of episodes dedicated to 'japanning' recipes including a spray can version.
at 2:23 the inclusion of the OOPS moment and showing the handle was threaded and not pressed on is cool, the end result is awesome, im impressed that you did include the oops moment as it makes these restorations more real as it shows that we all can make errors.
I am not only late to the party I am late to a party where I am mentioned and you use my japanning recipe.
I am ashamed of my tardiness and hope you can forgive me one day.
Let's call the flour, vinegar, salt mixture devil's dough, because the stench is sickening and the mess just as diabolical.
Your restoration is wonderful. Your given information is more and better than ever and your balance between perfection and preservation of history has museum quality.
Thank you my Christiano Bronaldo ❤.
🍺In my japanning recipe, I always use food-grade turpentine🍻
I love that high pressure parts washer, thats *click* noice
Very neat indeed, CONGRATULATIONS, impressive, I am 71 years old, I haven't seen one of those since my childhood.
Приятно наблюдать, за работой Мастера!!!😊
Respect for Labor 👏👏👏
This restauration was brought to you by the word sweet.
Haha! Thats what I wrote!!! 🤣XooX
That comment was sweet!
@@lifewuzonceezr You did? Then I donate all upvotes to you. 😊
I think the white stuff is dried up, old yeasts. Since coffee powder is hygroscopic, it's an excellent substrate for common yeasts to grow on. Left alone, when they finally consumed all of the coffee powder they die and dry up, leaving that white patina (which is quite common on old kitchen tools, and also usually not dangerous for human health). Great job on the restoration, and the video editing as well.
Cool, dass du alten Sachen neuen Glanz gibst. Du und My Mechanics seid einfach on Point. Seid ihr befreundet?
Yes, sind Kollegen 🙂
@@misterpatina cool
Nice!
Thanks!
Прикольно!))
"...so I just unscrewed it"
We've all been there, lol.
Thanks for feeling me 🤣
So nice. Just one thing : you should not lubricate metal mechs with linseed oil because it will dry and make a sticking paste
Such a sweet job! I bet that coffee tasted just great too...
I can´t get used to this beautiful perfection. Every single one is a masterpiece.
Thank you so much! iam glad you like it!
I hope you made yourself a cup of coffee after that ☕️
I laughed when you unscrewed the handle after trying so hard to get it off. I love that you did not file the manufacturing marks off of it! It’s a part of the history of the piece, so thank you for preserving that!😊
Thanks! 🙂
"Breaded brass sauce" as a name for the mixture. All that would be left to do would be to fry it.
Great job, as always. Thanks for the video.
Haha, thanks for that!
🤣 Google just called it Homemade Brass Cleaner

Hi Mr P. Love your work 👍
Thanks!
This was such a lovely restoration. And really well done. I always enjoy your humor but you had me actually laughing out loud with this one! Mr. P, your videography was outstanding. The closeups were wonderful and I loved the pressure washer. That was great. It felt like I was in your shop and you were pointing things out. Thanks for this!
Thank you so much Vickie!
@@misterpatina I forgot to mention how spot on the storytelling was too. The video flowed nicely and was so enjoyable.😁
Lovely to see Mister Patina back at work
I've been gone for a few months so you can imagine how happy I was to see 5 videos that I haven't watched yet...Is that a new lathe?
Haha, welcome back! Nope, still the old one 🙂
Yep. popped open a cold beer, bag of chips and binge watched all 5......Retirement is grand.....@@misterpatina
Brilliant restoration of a beautiful old coffee grinder
Such a beautiful restoration. I love the contrast between the brass and the metal.
"does this mixture already got a name?" Clever! Nice looking finish!
One could say you were not threading lightly on this job😉. Love your work, man!
Haha! Thanks man!
0:52 looks like what you'd find in the bottom of a firewood stack, all the tiny little wood pieces lol
😄😄
You did a great job. What a dedicated renovation project. The end result is amazing
I like the high pressure washer. Don't recall seeing it before. New? The coffee grinder seems to be well engineered and built with good quality materials. Fantastic restoration! 👍👍👍

Molto ben restaurato! Bravoooo!
Gorgeous!!!!

Прекрасное преображение!
I was wondering why you didn't try to see if it unscrewed before trying the bearing puller LOL Love seeing Japanning going back one items that started out with it. Plus I think if done right it looks better than paint
It looks great and you did an excellent job restoring it as well!!!
I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Another great restoration, I'll have to remember the japanesing technique it turned out great. Thanks for making great content once again!

Applying an original type finish was icing on the cake. Very nice restoration, Sir.
Amazing work. Stumbled upon the stolen video on reddit and just had to sub. ❤
Thank you so much! And welcome to my channel 🙂

Very nice, beautiful grinder, never seen one built like this before.should last another 100 years.just keep doing what your doing and carry on.great video.kudos to you sir.👍👍👍😎😎😎
Thank you so much Tom! :-)
Wonderful work! Just what a restoration should be. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😊
A thing of beauty
I absolutely enjoyed this restore. Final result as expected was perfect. Keep it up Sir.
Thank you so much! I will :-)
Bravo! another finely done restoration. Careful attention to detail and well thought out choices. Love watching these! Great Job, Herr P!
There is a deep irony in the first time I've seen you restore something and preserving it's patina in some way, that it's a grinder that would need new burrs. But what a beautiful collectors piece. Please continue this restoration - maintaining the character of the piece!
Also I would have been fascinated to see how you would remake a part like a grinder burr
Wolverhampton. I learned about that place watching Cruising the Cut.
Excellent result, as always. Thanks for the very informative captions. It’s very relaxing, watching your videos.
Thanks! Iam glad you enjoyed!
Great job, Mr. Patina and very nice grinder.
Surprisingly relaxing to watch …
Perhaps because the chaotic world feels like it needs restoring
True!
I dont know why. But i love a proper flat head screw removal.
Oh, I love these old things! I'm sure you'll do an amazing job restoring this one!
Bellissimo restauro 👏👏👏👍
Amazing restoration! Would also loved to have seen the spring and screws that were restored off camera. Great work.
Yea Kai!
Another triumph!
My wife enjoyed this as well since she loves coffee. 😂
Thanks! My workshop was smelling so good at the end 🤣
'Clark & Co, Wolverhampton' that's where I'm from in the UK ☺
Love your restoration! I can smell the coffee from the other side of the world! (Australia)😊
🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹 stunning
I always twist an item first while opening it , works most of the times
Very nice "closeup" video work. Japanning was a nice touch.
So beautiful a restoration!
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you so much!
Finally, get to see someone who does not remove the factory character from the project. Well done!
Yummy! 😂 This guy is hilarious and seriously good at this profession! 👏 ❤😊
Thanks! 🙂
Sweet! It smells so good, the coffee, I mean.
I've watched more restoration videos than I can remember but this is the first product I've seen from my hometown Wolverhampton ❤
Greets from Frankfurt to WH ✌️
Very nice work as always M.P...
Thanks Gary!
What a nice coffee grinder ! Great job!
why is everything related to coffee so royal and classy ?
/r/oddlysatisfying brought me here. Love it, subbed.
Thanks and welcome to my channel 🙂
a other great job!
Thanks! :-)
beautiful 😍

That was COOL!!!!
Iam glad you like it!
Nice work 🖖🏾
Thanks buddy!
Beautiful work as always
I have always wanted one of these to crack corn for my chickens and ducks
looks great
You could not have done it better, turned out great.
Amazing restoration. We will never have these vintage appliances unless someone like you restores them. Thankyou for the video share.😊
Nice to see some more unusual restoration techniques (such as the porridge on the brass and the Japaning) and also a sympathetic restoration that leaves much of the original character - though the sound of the hot bluing makes me want to go and fry some chips!
Getting to this episode late. What an great restoration! The lacquer job was beautifully done, sir. As always, looking forward to the next project! Be safe. Oh, and the parts washer is freaking awesome. Glad you got the new edition.
Wow! Great job. I enjoyed watching this.
Iam glad you enjoyed!
Splendid job restoring the coffee grinder. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.
Bro, you are doing really awesome.
