A gentleman never will drink too much. So he will not end up on the ground. If you always empty a bottle once it is open that is definitely not gentlemanlike
The funniest part is when Sven says how "the most elegant way is to put your thumb into the back hole" (of the bottle). Although putting your thumb in the back hole conjures some inelegant imagery, you may want to use the correct term for this, which is in fact the punt. Along the same vein, it is important when describing placing your thumb in the punt, to enunciate well to avoid any misunderstandings.
In regards to a noticable "pop" when opening a sparkling wine, the person who taught me on wine (one of the most highly ranked sommeliers if my country) said that popping the wine is tacky/showy and that it's better to learn how to "silently" open the bottle. Oh, and I've also tried the saber opening and completely agree that it's very messy and best left for extremely special occasions.
Three things I've come to enjoy in the autumn years of my life. A good Champagne, a fine Cigar and music. And to top it off a fine meal. Call me shallow, but it's something that keeps me going.
One additional tip for opening the bottle... I like to use the metal cage to grip the cork better than just with a bare palm. Less chance of cork slippage in your hand.
NO 8-10°C is drinking temperature so serve it much colder. and a true gentleman always opens his champagne with a sabre. great videos thank you for making them
Now THAT'S the way you do it!!!!! If there is such a true "perfectly done." YOU HAVE done it. Bravo! People are born with class and later develop it. You Sir, are born with IT.
Hello!!! I just have to say that I absolutely adore your channel! And your personality and knowledge and many, many other qualities, I have learnt sooooo much from you and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing! I'm a lady, but I watch your videos because I have a 7yo boy and a lovely husband that is all about ASOS fashion (I'm not demeaning anyone who uses the brand, I do too, but elegant and classy are not the first words that come to my mine when someone says ASOS) and my son gets the same look! As we go twice a week to church meetings and go out preaching, is very important for me to learn to have a good taste on clothes, we're from overseas and fashion is quite different from where we're from, and what I like the most about you is that you're not the model type who would look good on anything, but you're like the rest of mortals who are not models but can be elegant! Is like breaking a barrier, when I feel worthy of being elegant and classy even if I'm not the model type, if that makes sense :S well that's how you make me feel and just wanted to thank you for that!
Emirates airlines is filled with some lovely staff who will always serve you a flute filled to the brim of Moet and Chandon. That was the first thing that came to my mind when you mentioned the full glass.
I smiled to myself as I wondered if you would address the sabrage, and then you did! As I understand it, it is important to use the back of the blade rather than the edge. This would suggest a sabre with a flat spine like a French model 1822 or the American model 1840 "wristbreaker." A gentleman would reject the 1860 model for sabrage because it has a rounded spine. It does seem like a messy process, but, also fun. It might be best to practice first on empties, move up to the cheap stuff and then be done with it. As always, safety first!
I place my champagne glasses in the refrigerator so that they are approximately the same temperature as the champagne. No thermal shock pouring champagne into a room temperature glass.
Nice closing video on the year. I started watching your videos this year and can't thank you enough for the knowledge & confidence I've gained in such a short time. Happy new year & looking forward to the videos ahead. Cheers!
Hi Sven! I have something to say. I used my black suit with a black bow tie and some black shoes 2 times, and here comes the question, should i use the same suit with the same accessories at new years eve? My friends and other people have seen me wearing the same suit already, so should i change suit with a tie or something?
not to be a nit pick but a true professional opens the bottle without it popping. Just release the gas in a slow and controlled way. that way you never get any spray
True. But as I wrote above, in a celebratory context, the cork should pop and fly off. And if it crashes something, then the damage should always remind you of that joyous occasion.
Addition: Make sure to arrive at the table with flutes already set, bottle in hand along with a clean white BAR MOP (towel). You may think that the champagne won't spill, but it happens to the pros. Wrap the folded towel around the bottle as you hold it, whilst pulling the cork in the opposite hand. If when pouring, it's too heavy for you to punt with one hand (don't be ashamed and risk a disaster!) use the other to support the neck that is still wrapped with the towel. When you are done with all the pouring, place the opened bottle in an ice bucket (on table or stand) and drape the towel along the bottle. Don't take the towel away and don't throw it on the table! I have been served champagne where the server insisted she didn't need a towel. 1. She struggled to open it, then had to go get a towel while my wife and I stood looking at the de-foiled bottle at our table. 2. She then spilled a bit when pouring and had to wipe it up (w/ the towel she didn't need). Think of the towel as elegant insurance.
A very well produced video. It looks truly excellent. It was a nice bit of humour when you shook the bottle, part of me was “having kittens” at the thought of doing that to a bottle of Dom.
Raphael; I have watched your video most carefully. There is just one thing about opening the champagne. In my book, there are two ways (in addition to the sabre); like you've demonstrated, when you are with a lady (we wouldn't want her to lose an eye), or with company in a non-celebratory context. But when you are celebrating, the cork should definitely pop and fly out. The pop should resonate loud, and if the cork should hit something, then the damage will be there to always remind you of that joyous occasion. A somelier once told my dad "you should NEVER let the cork fly out; because that affects the taste of the champagne". To which my father replied; "you understand nothing."
As someone with really weak arms, it terrified me every time you demonstrated pouring the dom with one hand from the bottom. I love the category "indulgent delicacies." Hahaha.
Dear Raphael, I know this is a channel for men but I would be so happy if you could also make some videos about womens clothing/ style and behavior. Some time ago I already asked if there is a youtuber with a similar channel on youtube, but I was not successful with it (you also replied and said you unfortunately would not know). As a woman I love watching your videos cause I think I can still learn from it and I like the decent way you speak and inform us about things I never learned at home. Anyway, keep on doing this great work and thank you very much!
zaco21 but she’s looking for a youtuber who has a deep understanding of the art of clothing and style. Someone creating videos based on research of trends from the past. Schneider is a pearl in the ocean currently.
My recommendation is learn from him even though his target audiance is men. Dining and etiquette are the same for men and women. Also I would just adapt his clothing tips to a womans wardrobe. Ex) red velvet blazer paired with black knee length skirt. Embellish with a silk neck tie and Statement shoes. Try looking at sophisticated preppy styles on pinterest...brands like ralph lauren, lacoste, Burberry all are great for inspiration!
I prefer the coupe glass, because it makes the initial taste less sharp, instead spreading the taste more evenly across the mouth (or at least makes it feel that way)
A great addition to the article about Champagne i just read on your website. This New Years celebrations will get even classier this year! I would like to thank you for all the helpful videos and articles you made for us this year, it helped me a lot to become more of a gentleman and all around more knowledgeable. I wish you the best in the new year and i hope to se more amazing stuff from you. By the way i absolutely love your outfit in this video, great combination! :)
you’re mostly right..i would consider slightly higher temperature to drink champagne..the reason is that we use less and less dosage ( sugar) in champagne..to balance the acidity of the wine ( champagne) you need higher temperature than before ( average dosage is aroung 7 gr/ liter it used to be more around 12 in years past)..the ihigher the dosage the chiller the wine…( think coca cola..exactly the same problem..balancing sugar and acidity)
I love champagne, sadly I’ve been spoiled now and that means I don’t like cava or prosecco because they don’t have the depth of flavour of a nice champagne. Champagne is *not* just for celebrations, I drink it for no reason. My favourite glass is a tulip shaped flute I got from Paris, although I do sometimes use an old fashioned champagne saucer just for fun.
Nuts... I really like your video. I was just hoping that since you were actually opening a Dom Perignon you were going to show us how to remove the cage without removing the foil (typical only of DP). I haven't been able to find a video of that anywhere on You Tube. Even so, thumbs up.
As swords, while classic and old-school, aren’t very utilitarian or accepted in modern times, is there a certain knife you would suggest? Is it better to go flashy with a balisong, or classic with a multi tool? I know this isn’t something you would probably consider, but it is something I wanted to know your opinion on.
Every time my dad pops up a Champagne bottle, the cork always hits my mom in the head. Now that I know how to do it elegantly, I will have a take on this task :)
Great video Raphael! I have been waiting for a champagne video ever since you made the Scotch video! Awesome facts! My favorite champagne is Dom Perignon 2006.

Could you do a video about about alcohol and food? I find champagne is far better if I have fruit to eat with it. In fact I won't generally take it without fruit as I find it too acid. p.s. a video about the difference between champagne, crémant, spumante, cava, prosecco frizzante, or tranquill might be welcome... I think you'd enjoy making it! ............especially if you have fruit to eat!
Given that it's predicted to be going down to 8 degrees F in my area New Years eve, I don't think anyone will have trouble with warm... anything. Just set your bottles outside and wait a bit. That's all it'll take. No messy ice buckets required.

I'll bet Raphael had some fun making this video.
I always have fun ;)
Gentleman's Gazette wrong glass
how are french champagne flutes the wrong glass?
"Oh darn, I messed up the shot. Guess I HAVE to go refill this champagne glass..."
Your next video should be how a gentleman gets up off the floor after quaffing a bottle of champagne 🍾
A gentleman never will drink too much. So he will not end up on the ground.
If you always empty a bottle once it is open that is definitely not gentlemanlike

How is it possible to open it without the pop being heard at all? Seems impossible.
Can I drink Champagne on casual clothea or should I put on a suit?
Ruben The champagne tastes better with a nice fitted suit.
Neither. Wearing either a tuxedo or a smoking jacket is the only way to truly enjoy your Champagne. ;-)
🤣🤣🤣
Your birthday suit is the best choice.
😂
Three things I've come to enjoy in the autumn years of my life. A good Champagne, a fine Cigar and music. And to top it off a fine meal. Call me shallow, but it's something that keeps me going.
What a classy gentleman! Amazing fit! Thank U and Happy New Year!
Blending With Henry it’s now 2019
One additional tip for opening the bottle... I like to use the metal cage to grip the cork better than just with a bare palm. Less chance of cork slippage in your hand.
I wore my Tuxedo for this video.
I'm gonna try the technique with the thumb on a Jeroboam next time
NO 8-10°C is drinking temperature so serve it much colder. and a true gentleman always opens his champagne with a sabre. great videos thank you for making them
How to drink...:
1. often
2. at brunch
3. with orange juice
Simp
Sven, You are a true Prince of Style and Class, my friend. You are my Style Guru.
Now THAT'S the way you do it!!!!! If there is such a true "perfectly done." YOU HAVE done it. Bravo!
People are born with class and later develop it. You Sir, are born with IT.
I can't believe he actually shook the Dom Pérignon for that short clip ^^
It was probably empty
@@mertyatgak4930 and you took a joke seriously
I feel so elegant after watching this.
I can’t drink anymore, but that outfit is my absolute favorite I’ve seen on you. I love burgundy.
The pout face with the bottle shake - priceless. Thanks always for the straight talk combined with a sense of humo(u)r. Spot on and Cheers!
That grin in the thumbmail, though. "Don't take candy from strangers" ^^

Nice closing video on the year. I started watching your videos this year and can't thank you enough for the knowledge & confidence I've gained in such a short time. Happy new year & looking forward to the videos ahead. Cheers!
Merci!
The best of videos about anything for the modern gentleman.
What a lovely video. Informative, thoughtful, not pretentious. Thank you!
Just bought a 2002 Vintage Dom Pérignon. First ever. Now I don’t want to drink it until I’ve tried some other champagnes and buy that jacket!
Hi Sven! I have something to say. awesome video and very beautiful Christmas tree in the background
This guy for president, classy dude!

True. But as I wrote above, in a celebratory context, the cork should pop and fly off. And if it crashes something, then the damage should always remind you of that joyous occasion.
And never take the cage off. It’s there for a reason a,
Also, who holds the glass while pouring? Leave the glass on the on the table! This guy is clueless.
Is a glass necessary if I always drink the whole bottle?

Thanks, Raphael! I'll definitely do my best to incorporate this information and add a bit more charm to the New Year's Celebration.
Love your videos.......the back hole at the bottom of the bottle is called the punt.
Raphael; I have watched your video most carefully. There is just one thing about opening the champagne. Practice n the fact the the well is so deep are the only things that I can say make it easy lol
Here's one question I have always wondered about.
Why do people only fill their glass halfway?
I’d like to know as well. Maybe to show “I’m not greedy “ and anything less means not enough..
Dear Raphael, I know this is a channel for men but I would be so happy if you could also make some videos about womens clothing/ style and behavior. I suggest Justine Leconte. I feel like she's pretty knowledgeable when it comes to women's clothing
Women need to cook. Not spend time on youtube.
My recommendation is learn from him even though his target audiance is men. Dining and etiquette are the same for men and women. Also I would just adapt his clothing tips to a womans wardrobe. Mathieu Dostie I couldn’t say it any better.
Your channel has grown fast, i subscribed when you had only 50k, now you're already at 150k. Keep the work Rafael!
I prefer the coupe glass, because it makes the initial taste less sharp, instead spreading the taste more evenly across the mouth (or at least makes it feel that way)
I really like this channel. mostly because in my country these educations are not used even by elite or politicians.
A great addition to the article about Champagne i just read on your website. This New Years celebrations will get even classier this year!

Great video, very well explained. And that outfit is just amazing!
I feel so high class watching this video lol!
this is like one of the good YT channels i watch! keep on going man youre good!
Thank goodness for this video! Now I know I've been drinking campaign wrong all these years.
Saved my new years eve. Thank you.
I just finished watching an episode of dynasty and I'm here to feel fancy😂
I have a GH Mum since 2008. I haven't opened yet, should I open it or I throw to the trash directly?
Just try it and tell us here, please. As far as I know you should drink it within two years.
Bravo Sven, Bravo. BTW you have a beautifully decorated home from what I can see in this episode. Happy New Year Sir. Martin

Sven... THANKS! Enjoyed the video and picked up a few tips.

Champagne is *not* just for celebrations, I drink it for no reason. My favourite glass is a tulip shaped flute I got from Paris, although I do sometimes use an old fashioned champagne saucer just for fun.
Doesn't the saber method cut the glass back and then you may end up with little pieces of glass in your drink?
Thanks, my French friend she got me into champagne.
Sometimes I feel like I don't know what I'm doing, but it's a gentle reminder to be told that I look like I don't know what I'm doing.
Nuts... I really like your video. I was just hoping that since you were actually opening a Dom Perignon you were going to show us how to remove the cage without removing the foil (typical only of DP). I haven't been able to find a video of that anywhere on You Tube. Even so, thumbs up.
You know you should have mentioned rare owls with your flying cork disclaimer… great video! Learned a lot!
Dumb and dumber ? 😂

Is it better to go flashy with a balisong, or classic with a multi tool? I know this isn’t something you would probably consider, but it is something I wanted to know your opinion on.
Those coasters are beautiful
Please make video how to drink VODKA ))
Drink it straight up raw!
Ask russian
Every time my dad pops up a Champagne bottle, the cork always hits my mom in the head. Now that I know how to do it elegantly, I will have a take on this task :)
What about family traditions? XD
Great video Raphael! I have been waiting for a champagne video ever since you made the Scotch video! Awesome facts!
My favorite champagne is Dom Perignon 2006.
It's is not messy to open the champagne with a sabre. I have have done it multiple times and it is way easier than it looks. Would I recommend it, no you release all the pressure at once which is not recommended but I looks damn cool to decapitate the bottle.

Just set your bottles outside and wait a bit. That's all it'll take. No messy ice buckets required.
Bro can u do this with Milk
Top ?
Gentlemanly is it appropriate to super analyze a champagne that may be extraordinary or maybe low end common? I don't want to give the wrong impression either way?
How to pour a Methusaleb (up to a Melchizedek) bottle elegantly?
To everyone watching this, Dom Perignon is a champagne designed for the american consumer. It has a sweet core that the typical consumer likes.
Such a handsome thumbnail 😍♥️
Never ever let the cork pop, if you open a bottle of champagne the right way. Also, use a hand napkin to cover the cork and to hold the bottle while serving.
l have a question.how to improve the palate sensation?its very hard to distinguish flavors .is there a book on it?i need help.my job requires me able to pick up these flavors in champagne or whisky or gin or other spirtis.
Very classy!!! I just add ice cubes if it's too warm.
You should have also mentioned how to handle the cup
I opened a bottle of wine last year, and it scared me shitless, as I was afraid the cork might fly towards my face. However, the pop was satisfying. 🍾🍷
It's new year 2022 and I'm watching this video at home without champagne😂
I thought that if the bottle pops you opened it wrong, right?
Happy New Year!
How to budget when you love champagne...🥂
A very enjoyable video!
I already knew most of the facts you presented but I still enjoyed the video very.
Hey Raphael, really nice video, like always! There's just one thing about pouring the champagne. I've read that actually pouring it into the glass by holding your thumb in that little hole is actually the way a waiter is supposed to pour it, so the client can actually see the label of the bottle. Alles Gute im neuen Jahr!
The bottle must not pop when you open it! And usually you have to use a hand napkin to cover the cork while you open the bottle.
im surprised he messed that up
I think it depends on the setting. In a restaurant you don't want the pop, but at a party or celebration, such as new year's eve, the pop is acceptable.
A loud pop is a faux pas, but a small pop is fine.
If the purge was real, the first thing i would do would be steal your wardrobe. Can you do a livestream where we show you outfits and you tell us how to improve them?
Amazing video! I’ve been waiting for the velvet bow tie to show up in the shop!
0:44 so right now ok thanks hahaha
Happy New Year 2021.
Can I️ use a sippy cup for champagne?
1:05 your face says "this is the greatest thing I've ever tasted"
Brilliant video, Raphael.
with a sabre it is not a mess at all.... if you don it right. :) but yes it is more for show :)
i couldnt find a link to your premium champagne video. If someone could comment the link, that'd be great :)
Wow you look like a boss when sat down on the couch
One remark that I always heard is that the cork shouldn't pop but rather make a smooth "shuuj" when opening. But this comes from someone who only serves champagne, not drink it ;-)
you are a good host bro thank you for your video keep it up bro good vibes and blessings
This guy should've been born in 1900
