Absolutely loved this movie. I was in gradeschool when ai saw this in theaters and to me it was like watching a live-action Daimos movie, but taking the idea of having the Mech mimic its Jock/Pilot’s movements up a notch. Then more than 2 decades after Robot Jox, the amazing Guillermo Del Toro brought us Pacific Rim and I was instantly brought back to being 8 again.
I have mentioned this before. For a b-movie, Robot Jox was a head of its time. Practical efforts will always outdo cgi, in my opinion. I noss cinema of the 80s and 90s. Back then, not everything had to be box office.
I doubt Ron Cobb had specifically Gundam in mind when designing those. Feels in part more like some of the "classic" Japanese robots. I think the "rocket punch" at the end is a good hint.
