More specifically, they're a type of yokai (demon/spectre) based on a paper lantern. You can also see an umbrella yokai for a second earlier in the video. That whole world is based on spooky stuff, and Nintendo being a Japanese company incorporated some of their home country's mythology that is considered creepy.
I was cool that they incorporated old Japanese buildings in a Mario stage. That hardly ever happens in Mario games before Mario Odyssey came out.

Love these Videos in which people beat games while challenging themselves.
This is definitely the most original and inventive 2D Mario game. You got 6 brand new themes, something I wish Nintendo would do more today **cough** NSMB, a brand new boss, and a more open world style hub and gameplay. My only problems with this game are that it's a bit too short and too easy imo, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the best to this day. Not to mention it has aged pretty well, especially when played with the DX hack adding color!
I love coinless runs. They just make the game so much more interesting, and I love the content creators.
Fun fact: the space zone boss called Tatanga was the final boss of Super Mario land, the previous game in the series! He also has a new robot suit!:)

Those 2 coins can be skipped:
1. Go to Pumpkin Zone 1 after completing it.
2. Go down the pipe. Once you start going down the pipe, press start and then select to exit the level.
3. Go to Macro Zone 1 and hug the left side of the screen.
I don't know if power ups matter, but I did it as small Mario.

7:55 Fun fact - this level is not intended to be made with Lego bricks! If you go underneath the stairs at 8:02 and go all the way to the right, you can see the letters “N&B” on the side of one of the bricks. These letters are a reference to N&B Blocks (basically rip-off Legos) which Nintendo sold in direct competition with Lego while they were still a toy company! :)
This game is really underrated imo. Really enjoying these vids Nico!
The bosses are god awful though. You can just hover over them with a carrot after you hit them the first time to combo them each and every time.

I was trying that but you have to spend money on the exits so what I tried is only getting 10 or anything like 20 or 30 because you can throw away coins in form of one big coin with 10 of value I'm stuck on the second boss but I know it can be beated.

When I didn't see the title yet but only the thumbnail, I thought it was Mario 3 for some reason.
Here's an idea for a video, one that goes against your deepest held habits: instead of going for the lowest score possible, why not see how high you can get it in New Super Mario Bros (for the Nintento DS)? Scores used to MEAN something, now's your chance to make it happen again.
A couple ground rules, to make it interesting:
Killing the same enemy more than once doesn't count- no farming up 99999999 points off of some Goomba in 1-1 that you repeatedly respawn, or stomping a Dry Bones repeatedly. If a pipe infinitely spawns enemies, you only get the points off of one of those enemies. And just to clarify, any other tricks or whatever that grant infinite points? Banned. No cheese here.
It's probably be best to track your points outside of the game, like Ceave Gaming did in the Lowest Possible Score in Luigi U videos. Route to your heart's content, but no repeating a level for extra points.

10:51 There is a really complicated glitch that warps you directly to the credits. Sadly, the pipe glitch is a bad choice, because you can't get to $A2D5 without collecting a single coin that easily (if it's possible at all). But with the game end glitch, it's possible to beat the game coinless, but it's so hard that no human up until this point actually performed this glitch. But it's theoretically possible.
I tried that too but couldn’t do credits warp coinless. I did however use the pipe glitch to beat Macro 1 and therefore the whole game coinless th-cam.com/video/c-KNb9lmzj0/w-d-xo.html

You can actually beat the game without touching a coin by playing version 1.0 of the game and going down the first pipe in pumpkin zone, pausing then exiting the stage and then you'll fall through the floor and enter an area known as glitch world. And then after that pause the game and then go to youtube and watch a+starts video on sml2 to figure out what happens next to get the credits warp because I forgor

Wait Wario steals coins quite often yet there's no coins in his castle with soooooooo many coins you would expect for there to be at least a few here and there in his castle maybe he spent all of them on his castle. Those traps that try to kill Mario are pretty effective I must admit.
This game is different in that you use coins in a store. I guess they didn't think you'd want to go back to the store after getting to the final level.

I noticed the lack of coins became a more standard thing in boss stages with later Mario games.

also, funny you should joke about Legos being "expensive", since N&B block was potentially an expense too great for Nintendo to continue to sell their Lego ripoff. Yeah, it's an odd thing for the game to reference, but Nintendo used to sell knock-off legos to japanese children.

Just a little Nintendo trivia: The blocks in the final stage of Mario Zone aren't Legos, they're N&B Blocks! Nintendo used to produce a rival to Lego back in the 1960s (maybe 70s?) in Japan, called N&B, and if you look at some parts of the level you'll see the N&B logo on the blocks.
