I'm currently experiencing this acid reflux thing and it affected my speaking/singing voice. I also developed cobblestones in my throat. I just have one question, do you suggest that I should rest my voice and stop singing for a while? Thank you! This video really enlightened me.
I noticed that acid reflux makes me cough when I sing. It dries my chords out so I've had to adjust my diet. I noticed my vocal range isn't as wide as it used to be, either. It's a real bummer. Billy Porter has gone on to mention that acid reflux has effected his vocal quality, as well. Which is actually comforting to know that a professional even struggles with this. There's still hope!
Absolutely. Acid reflux issues does not mean the end of your voice. You need to find what works for you and maintain the acid reflux symptoms in check. I just published another video on this topic if you are interested: th-cam.com/video/8X1fly0VHV4/w-d-xo.html
Katarina, thank you for the great information. Especially the correlation between singers and LPR. I am a singer who works on cruise ships and sings for 100 days at a contract, but had to cut short lately as my voice went out from strain. Part of it I know was LPR. I was diagnosed with GERD, but didn't have any of the regular symptoms, Heartburn etc, just a clearing of my throat, a slight burning in my throat and coughing after eating. Now from you I realize that all the singing is a major influence on the LPR. As you know most ENT's will throw PPI's at you which do nothing for LPR. Seems like so little knowledge in the ENT community of LPR, and they think it's GERD. I have changed my diet but I wonder does the sphincter go back to normal eventually, seems if you keep singing at very long and hard levels it's going to keep being unable to close, even with proper diet. What is the protocol then so singers can keep singing. Thank you so much again.
You're an angel! I've been experiencing this for a long time! And I was wondering why I'm more affected than my family members are by acid reflux as we all eat the same food! Now I realise why.. coz singers are more prone to acid reflux. I've been avoiding all the food causing acid reflux and it's worked wonders! Hope to recover soon!

I was diagnosed with lpr along with mild sleep apnea which my dr said can be related. I followed a high alkaline low acid diet, no caffeine, do not eat past 6 pm, lifted my headboard of my bed...it worked, I lost 20 lbs.. no globus sensation or mucus in my throat .also use oral appliance during sleep and I do sleep better....but after reflux started getting better I developed voice and tight muscles from my shoulders up. Covid stress, mask wearing and other personal events kept me in such state of high anxiety..I have a follow up with my ent but I suspect mtd ..also low tongue posture ..a habit of tongue thrusting I developed over anxiety from mask wearing. I am extremely claustrophobic..I hope therapy helps. The massages you showed has helped along with cbd vocal spray from my dr. Thank you
Hi Laurie, well first of all congratulations on finding a solution for your LPR problem! That is a big accomplishment because it is never an easy or quick fix. Regarding the tight muscles, don't jump to conclusions about MTD. Talk to your doctor. Our voices are definitely affected by stress and high emotions. I'm so sad. I lost my singing voice as well as my talking voice. Sometimes I have moments if clarity but mostly I talk and sing false etto. I'm often misunderstood. I'm taking your advice, I have begun to change diet. I'm quiiting coffee and beer, I am going to change my bed next. Medacine didn't help I have nothing left to lose, I am praying for full recovery. Thank you for your tips.
I am not sure if you have been seen by a laryngologist. I would start there. Dietary changes may help but they most likely will not completely solve your issue. I suggest that you speak to a voice professional and see if voice therapy may be an option for you.
Katarina, I suddenly started getting a slightly husky voice when I started doing yoga. Its been husky for about 4 weeks. My Dr has given me PPIs to try. Have you heard of the yoga connection before?
Sometimes, exercise can induce tension, for example when you strain during the exercise, when you hold your breath or when you breathe in and out loud. It seems that you are doing something during the exercise that puts strain on your voice.
Thanks! Great information. I have great digestion and never have symptoms of acid reflux; I have a great diet. I used to fast before gigs, mostly because I could feel the food when I got nervous. Hi Joshua, I am sorry to hear about your vocal issues due to acid reflux. However, I am not a doctor and I would not be able to solve your acid reflux issue. My role is to teach people how to apply behavioural changes in their life style and provide information on various approaches that there are. Are there any singers here who's currently experiencing this? I'm really struggling right now on my gigs. What do you usually do before your performances to at least lessen the globus sensation? Whenever I try to hit high notes, the mucus build up on my throat is destroying my range and it sounds like I'm cracking. It's really embarrassing and I'm still having 2-3x a gig per week.

LPR medication takes time to work (at least 3 months). Globus sensation will diminish when the LPR is more under control. But also use some meditation or other approaches to changing your thought process about your voice and vocal issue. Your negative thoughts may adding to the sensation of something stuck in your throat.

@@healthyvoicetips Yeah PPI that didn't do anything , after like 5 months of suffering , it got worse with nauseas so doctor prescribed me H1 antihistamine for the nauseas and wow my dysphagia got 80% better so does my voice !! , Thank God for that
Since most doctors sadly are pretty useless so i did my own research and took a Dao enzymes as a kidney beef extract supplements and that alone helped me quit antihistamines , Thank God for saving my life i was super depressed
Would the special bed leg supports not possibly break the bottom legs?
No.
My through hurts if I sing to much and when I talk and I have acid reflex
I hope your voice is feeling better today. Have you seen a laryngologist?
My coffee is decaf can I still drink it?
Yes.
I am so sorry to hear about your vocal issues. Have you had your voice properly checked by a laryngologist?
@@healthyvoicetips I was diagnosed with lpr and I'm currently on medication. I'm trying to look for a way to at least lessen the globus sensation :( It is really frustrating
LPR medication takes time to work (at least 3 months). Globus sensation will diminish when the LPR is more under control. But also use some meditation or other approaches to changing your thought process about your voice and vocal issue. Your negative thoughts may adding to the sensation of something stuck in your throat.
So sad i can't sing as my acid reflux has diminished my saliva and talkinh is difficult. I also have chronic axiety and noone can tell me how to get my saliva back
You may not get the saliva back. There is artificial saliva that you can spray in your throat if that tis the last resort.
@@healthyvoicetips i use it but its not good.
After 2 weeks still i have a hoarse voice i had acid reflux few days back I don't have pain in throat but my voice ain't getting better
Have you talked to your doctor?
@@healthyvoicetips not really but it got better after having herbal lozenges and black mulberry syrup
Hi mam,,yesterday i go to the ENT doctors to see my vocal cords and he did not found vocal nodes,,but he found that i had an acid reflux that cause my vojce to horesness,,now my question mam is should my voice come back like before that i can sing with freedom?
To manage acid reflux can take a few months but many people can go back to their "old" voice.
@@healthyvoicetips Thank you mam,,i
@@healthyvoicetips Do you mean mam that what had my voice right now it will remain like this?
Do acid reflux tightens the vocal chord? I have restricted my range both from higher and lower notes. Please help
It makes my throat tight too and holds back my range
Have you been assessed by a laryngologist? That’s the first step I highly recommend in solving vocal problems.
I've been having acid reflux in my throat for months upon months, maybe a year.
What have you done to change it?
