He had a head injury. That needs to be called dead. The trainer needed to get out there. NHL. A head injury is always a serious injury. If you have these things to prevent or mitigate concussions, the play needed to be called dead.

Punching somebody that is being restrained by an official and can't protect himself should be treated the same as sucker punching somebody, and both should be more severely punished than spitting on somebody.

Can we talk about what a class act Petterson is for trying to call attention to the down player repeatedly and even stays near him and doesn't really engage in the play but rather protects Calvert. That is what hockey is all about.
I agree. But I still think there should be enough sportmanship in NHL that the Canucks would have given the puck to Avs so the ref would stop the play(which should have been done). I get that winning is everything but still. Just last weekend in my game my teammates leg hit the opponents goalie in the head and he went down...REF didn't stop the play and my teammate just shot the puck out of the rink. I know it is not samw to compare NHL and my countrys 2-division but that is sportsmanship.
@@teemup9247 what's really odd is what you described is how it is handled in soccer and I'd very much so like to see teams start with the puck if a player is injured on the play and it gets rid of the potential change of possession by getting rid of the faceoff and the team of the injured player no longer has to get the puck back just to get a stop

Meanwhile Pekka Rinne gets pulled against the Blackhawks after saying his last game against them was the easiest shutout of his career. He wasn't wrong but it was hilarious having that happen

Refs don't see the blood, he's conscious but down, have to wait till his team has the puck, however Pettersson stopping right away there and then trying to keep the play away from him and leave a chance for graves team to get the puck, is the only thing that kept it anywhere close to trying to be fair!

It was the team with primeau, the hughes brothers, Oliver walstrom, joel farabee, etc. I domt know if it was the game game that joel Farage got a hat trick in the first period or not, but that team should have beaten kaapo kakko and team Finland.

And the puck possession is a thing you do in ringette (with a ring) and should happen with hockey in that sort of instance.
the crazy thing is in soccer if you’re team has the ball and you go down with an injury in the middle of play the officials will give your team a chance to score but if the other team has possession or takes possession when you sustain an injury play is stopped. kinda makes a little more sense to me that way

That play was brutal vs the aves. Even pettersson was trying to call the refs. Stopped playing and was pointing at the player on the ice. I hope he is ok.

Legally, spitting is considered a larger degree of assault than punching due to the biohazard. No reason for it... at all.

That is a rule that needs to have been changed a while ago. Fine maybe if the injury is away from the play let them play on shorthanded but when they're passing around the guy who's on the ice because he's bleeding from the head or whatever just blow the whistle. Is it doing to take a person getting further injured before the NHL changes it?

Refs that just straight up don’t care about players being OBVIOUSLY SERIOUSLY INJURED disgust me so much. It’s one thing to ignore a penalty that wasn’t that serious (even if it was dirty), it’s another to ignore A GUY BLEEDING ON THE ICE OH MY GOD. What would these refs have done in the clint malarchuk situation? Just let him bleed out? It’s a damn good thing some of the more serious injuries were in games reffed by people with some humanity 😒

It's things like this, that make me feel like the refs in the NHL are being held to no standers, and absolutely need to be. It's one thing to ignore a tap on the legs or a questionable cross check but to see a player bleeding from his bucket and go "nah this isn't that bad, keep playing boys" is inexcusable.

Something similar happened with that Canucks vs Avs game in a playoff game a few years ago against Columbus and Pittsburgh. I dont remember who got hurt but the Columbus player went down and Pittsburgh eventually scored. I'm pretty sure the Columbus player ended up having something in his face broken (jaw or orbital bone maybe?)
That was Zach Werenski. He says this play should have stopped. Then he added a more politic tweet about the refs being in a tough situation, blah blah blah

That play shoulve have been bloand dead once you could see it was an apparent head injury. Plus, I agree you should just let play resume with Vancouver having possession so at least there is some semblance of fairness to them, and if a guy fakes an injury in that situation, call a dive, and maybe even award a penalty shot.

my first reaction would be to try to punch back, but that would involve punching a ref out in order to punch gudbranson . as a caps fan, hathawy should not have spit, but the whole thing could have been avoided if the refs just let them fking fight
also, for the nucks-avs thing, i get the whole "game-changing play" thing, but if half the opposing team has stopped play, and a guy's fking bleeding out, you have to stop play. there's no excuse for that. i personally feel that those refs should be suspended w/o pay
Just a quick correction he was not bleeding out that implies a major artery got hit he was bleeding and the play should have been stopped but he was not bleeding out
The play should be blown dead when a player is down due to anything to the head. No matter who has the puck.
I was thinking that, then I thought no that’s stupid, any hit to the head would be called since every hit to the head is illegal, and would result in a stop In play and a penalty. Then I saw him get hit in the head with the puck.
Im a Caps fan (better get that outta the way) and yeah it was messed up, (make that totally f'd up) that Hathaway spit on Gudbransen. But that said and here's what nobody has talked about. about 2 seconds before he spits Gudbransen looks around makes sure neither of the refs or linesmen are looking and pops Hathaway right in the mouth. It's not an excuse to forgive the spitting or anything like that but, maybe it helps to explain the frustration that lead to it. You got a guy in Hathaway that's spoiling to fight with anyone that'll go with him and you got Gudbransen getting up in his face while the linesman is trying to separate them and then throws a cheapie at him. Not pardoning Hathaway but, in his skates i'd be steaming too.

You’re wrong about the caps goal. The goalie and d were still engaged in the play. If the play was instantly called with a goal disallowed after a fight breaks out, then hitting would be removed from the game altogether.
I think he was saying the Leipsic check should have been a penalty. I don't agree but I don't think it was the scrum alone he was referring to as a reason it shouldn't have counted.
@@adamg7984 He called it a clean hit, and "pretty sure it was interference", but it wasn't. Puck was at his feet he just whiffed on the clear. So I think he meant because the fights broke out. Agreed that the spit was gross though
@@chainfire yeah I didn't think that it was interference and I felt that the Ducks initiated that scrum and that shouldn't have cost the Caps a scoring chance. But hey people see things different.
