      Was at the game, the staff took it away from the guy who caught it soon after. The staff who did it got boo'ed heavily by the whole arena. They gave it to the Preds trainer who switched it with a different stick and gave it to the fan, he then hoisted it in the air to cheers of the whole arena. Was pretty hilarious.

    So that stick throw wasn't even a "throw", more him sliding it down the ice. Loose definition the NHL has there. If the stick is thrown at a player or out of the rink like Stamkos in Boston years ago (I was at that game), THAT should be a penalty.

    • @KWally
      @KWally 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to do with teams trying to circumvent the rule as a way of defending, so hockey in general, not just the NHL, has a no stick throwing rule. You can legally pass the stick to another player, but it must remain in the hands of a player at all times. This is even a rule in Minor hockey.

    When it comes to the throwing of the stick penalty, I can see where having the rule be cut and dry would be beneficial. By and large, I am in favour of rules that make the officials' jobs easier, rather than harder. I know they're professionals and should be able to handle it, but if their job is to ensure the safety of players and audience members, I say it only makes sense to help them out.
    Besides, when has ambiguity or grey areas in the rules ever worked out? I mean, just look at goaltender interference. In the past few years, everyone from coaches, to players, analysts, fans, and probably officials themselves (from behind closed doors) are completely fed up with how dumb the rule is, and how inconsistently it is called.
    And let's face it, not every throw of the stick is going to be so black and white. The moment players know they can get a way with something, they will exploit it to its furthest extent and all of a sudden it becomes a judgement call by the ref. It's unnecessarily ambiguous for a rule that almost never occurs in a typical game. Leave it be, and give the refs one less thing to worry about.

    • @oskforalltid
      @oskforalltid 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So they could make the rule state that one may not throw a stick within 10 feet of an opposing player, then you can't do it even if you throw it to your teammate behind you when your team is on the offence and an opposing player skated by you on their way to defend but it would still leave Nurse in the green for what he did

    • @dylancraven3979
      @dylancraven3979 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oskforalltid Sure, but unless the NHL puts scale markers along the boards, that's still a judgement call by the refs. That change could definitely work, I just feel awkward changing a perfectly reasonable and objective rule into a perfectly reasonable, but subjective one.

  • @davejs
    @davejs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can imagine a scenario where players break their stick and then the bench is throwing sticks down the ice. I think the rule makes sense. You might say, "ok, then no throwing sticks from the bench." but there's also a grey area where players start throwing sticks to block passes or to distract opponents. and that would just be chaos. I think any rule that would allow this specific play but not allow a bunch of other crazy plays would be so complicated and hard to fairly enforce.

    I think it was a penalty. But in my opinion, the penalty should have been illegal equipment, not just throwing the stick. We saw this happen last year, where a Vegas player dropped his stick, while simultaneously another player got his stuck in the boards. He grabbed the stick out of the boards and the refs called a penalty for it. I thought it was ridiculous at the time, but this a completely different issue, the goalie was using a skater's stick. If for example, the refs would call it for a forward using the goalie's stick, its only fair that we do the same for the other way around.

    I learned this lesson in peewee hockey... I slid my stick to our goalie who was no more than 10 feet away...got a penalty for it. Argued with the referee about it, got 10 minutes extra.

    Paul Byron getting suspended 3 GAMES last year for a hockey hit. The only reason why he got suspended was the Boston Bruins made such a stink about it!!
    A legitimate cross check to the Head and nothing!?!? Utter f**** b*******!!!
    If this doesn't show League (Especially when suspensions are doled out.) I don't know what does!
    Kotkaniemi was taken out for like eight games this year, on a text book Slew Foot, and nothing!

    Wikipedia says that Players can be fined up to 50% of one day's salary, up to a maximum of $10,000.00 for their first offense, and $15,000.00 for any subsequent offenses (if fined in the last 12 months.) But yeah, 5000$ are peanuts when you make 3,75 millions $ a year. if my calculations are correct, $10000 is the maximum fine that Chara would have had if his salary's paid over a 186-day period because a half-a-day fine would exceed 10000$

    Assuming someone of Zdeno Chara's age has worked every year since they were 18 years old earning the median annual US personal income of $31,099 (2016 data), they will have earned a total gross income of $746,376. An equivalent fine for that person would be $38.

    I thought that the penalty for cross-checking a guy in the face was 5 games suspension. To be exact 5 playoff games, which is supposed to be equivalent to 10 regular season games. I guess the DOPS said " Well, He's really tall, so how could he NOT crosscheck guys in the face? Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn't mean to do that." DOPS is ridiculously inconsistent. I'm not trying to imply that Chara's cosscheck was as bad as Kadri's, but Chara should have at least got a game or two for that. Seems fair.

    I'm done with this show. He's an idiot. You can't throw equipment. Stick, helmet, gloves, skates, there is no portion of equipment that is throw-able. And there are no exceptions. It's not like the rule book says "you can't throw your equipment but in the following cases we'll allow it: 1- You really felt like it would help your team, 2- It would make Dangle cry 3- You're a Bruins player"

    You compared his career earnings to someones yearly earnings. Still not a serious punishment but not accurate. If someone made 100k a year for 27 years it would be way more than $5 as their punishment. Thanks for the laugh though and next time I am in trouble with the law I will ask if the Chara punishment option is available because it is only $135 (if you make 100k a year).

    I was at that Wild/Knights game. Not only was Reaves down on the ice for a while after the nutshot, when he finally made it to the bench, he was kneeling in the doorway until they made him move so they could close it. He was then sitting on the bench for a second when play started again but then went immediately back to kneeling on the ground for a good 2 mins until he could go back to sitting.......that HAD to be painful!! But, the game started chippy.....30 seconds in, they were fighting

    I'm surprised that the own goal made by the preds against the Oilers wasn't in this, afterall they were leading 3-0 and that own goal gave some energy back to the Oilers enough to come back and win the game ......... Right when the preds were about to catch back to the playoffs. That's a dangnit for them. Or the Montreal Canadians against the Coyotes when twice at the end of the game the Coyotes didn't receive a penalty for too many men on the ice which led to a play that got the Montreal Canadians a penalty ..... During wish they got scored ...... With 1 minute left to the game. Dangnit. Also Danaut got a puck to the face

    Oh come on, Chara doesn't have the ability to cross check someone lower than the neck! BTW, my 15-year-old hockey player son made me watch, show is highly entertaining. Great clips and hilarious commentary! Only thing I'd suggest is that when you show a clip where there's a specific focus, either show it a second time with a closeup or somehow point out what we're looking at. In the Kapanen thrown stick clip, as an old guy, I was focused on where the puck went so it took me forever to find where the thrown stick was.

    I don't think Nurse sliding(not throwing) his stick back to the goalie should have been a penalty. Like you said, if it was towards the play or interfered in some way I understand, BUT nurse was looking to chance and it was behind the play so I don't see a problem with it personally.

    Must be the same Boston officials from game 1 of the third round of last years playoffs against the Canes who gave Hamilton a minor for being checked after they let a massive crosscheck go by Boston. The refs changed the whole game in a matter of 5 minutes after the Canes took the lead. The "Original six officiating" started with that game! This has been a real issue this year.

    All stick throws should be penalized. If you start allowing some, you start getting into the gray area on weather it should be called or not. Much the same way with the delay of game call for shooting the puck out of play in your own zone. Just call a penalty on stick throws so it doesn't become an issue.

    It shouldn't have been a penalty - see www.hockeycentral.co.uk/nhlrules/Rules-53.php
    First the stick was not thrown, so not even sure this applies, but that's what it was penalized under so let's investigate further.
    The rule specifically states that you need to throw the stick at the puck or an opponent. Further on it states, "When moving a stick that is not broken, no penalty shall be assessed as long as it does not interfere with the play..."
    Case closed

One thing that doesnt make any sense to me is that this is one of the most violent sports, players are in danger almost constantly and i think thats ridiculous that players get so harshly penalized by somethings like throwing the stick.
