    RIP Toshihiko Koga. He was such a savage and inspiration back in the 90's

    I'd add Yamashita to that list. 4 time world champ, olympic gold medalist. Guy was unbeatable for a large portion of his career.

      Definitely! I agree! He would fight injured, too. He had guts, heart, strength and great dignity. I love the way he bowed also. He was humble (IMHO).

    Unfair to judge past generations with today’s standards. Old time judokas would destroy in ne waza any modern champion hands down. What about judo original old rules allowing leg grabbing?Not a fair comparison IMO. Kano had no competitive achievements but he was philosophically, intellectually and pedagogically ahead of not only many judokas, but many human beings. But nowadays this side of judo is totally forgotten, especially by competitors

    • @Slymo11
      @Slymo11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and wasn't Kano kind of against the whole competition for the sake of winning? He was more into self development and your opponent was a tool towards helping you achieve that, whether you won or lost. Kano could also apparently hold his own with Saigo who was mean to be the best of that time wasn't he? Mifune alos highly rated him. On a side note I would also love to see Travis spar with Roger Gracie. Roger has good judo by all accounts but not at level of Travis and vice versa with Travis against Rogers ground work

    Nomura was the generation after Koga...

  • @rickdeckard9810

    But the reason the judokas now have the results they do is because they're riding on the shoulder of giants who have paved the way and evolved the sport incrementally to the point where it's at. So you have to respect the OGs its like that with anything.

    Kimura was the beast. ( they literally call him oni, and still they call him that .)

      So does BJJ, if you look at the kinds of banned techniques that are banned in BJJ competition today, you can see that it is walking the path of Judo. If you want the sport to become popular, you need the protect the practitioners. Try pulling guard on the street, you'll get stomped on immediately

      This is false. A throw can literally kill a person. Break their ribs and arms. A Judoka beat Helio Gracie in a fight. He didn't use double legs that everyone cries about. You can pin and submit with a kimura today just as you could then. Bjj guys are so stupid. They can't even take people down. Bjj guys are only effective against un-trained opponents. Butt scooting doesn't work in real life. If you can't take them down you're a fish out of water. I respect the gracies because they learned all aspects of fighting, but modern bjj players are deranged and helpless.

Yes he is a freak physically walking around at 287LBS of muscle. So yes, his weight and size have everything to do with his victory. @@jeffreyromeo3317 true. its like creating a textbook and newer guys releasing the same book with improvements whether small changes or significant ones, a new edition. improvement should be expected, would be more surprising if it got worse given knowledge they have access to. when comparing modern practitioners to old ones, perhaps better to look at their context and how far they pushed the sport more than who would win. new ones are given an advantage of also having older knowledge available to them
