I think the fact that he is able to stay rational through this is the most impressive. It’s one thing to smash your head against the wall through that process, and another thing entirely to make logical decisions to optimize everything.

He wasn’t rational! Hives. Dehydration. Lots of craziness involved in weight cutting.

This is Travis’ MOST relatable story to regular competitive judo players, and the LEAST relatable story of mental toughness to the average person! After this, everything in life is that much easier.

As a Finnish guy, the sauna part dosent sound that bad

It's going into the sauna when you're so dehydrated, when your body doesn't want to sweat that sucks. I use sauna leisurely everyday, but hate using it for weight cutting.

@@Sonkens Are you implying that Finns usually use a sauna while extremely dehydrated? I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

I missed something, he weighed in (max) at 84kg on a Wednesday in Canada then flies to Russia and 2 days later on a Sunday he weighs almost 94kg. He was on a plane most of that time, how does one gain 10kg in such a short time? Water weight probably but still.

Sometimes your body plays tricks on you like that, especially if you have been doing extreme weight cuts consistently. Or he might have had a really big lunch

Our Philly Sambo team was in CA for nationals, and I will forever thank the local workout gym for letting us use their sauna for free!

Travis, you just need to ask Russians to help you to find a good Russian banya ( not Finish sauna) in Sochi! There are tons of them overthere!

As someone who has had issues with hives stress is a big factor and I went through a similar experience where I thought I was being bit by stuff and That I had allergies but it was stress the whole time😅

He had to cut 28 pounds. Ouch. I’ve been there for weight cuts but not 28 pounds! Been in a sauna for an hour with zero sweating because I was already dehydrated.

YOU HAVE TO MAKE WEIGHT. That was always my mentality but easier said than done. One time at a huge wrestling tournament an official took pity on me and two minutes before deadline (no sweat in sauna day) he put his finger on the scale arm and said “good”. I just stared at him. He said “get off the scale. You’re in.” I probably looked like death warmed over.
