      The Japanese at the Kodokan have ironically maintained more of the old judo spirit, even though in sports format, compared to the rest of the world. Unless you go to a highly technical school focused on the complete curriculum.
      IF you notice, the Japanese Olympic competitors have a more complete Ne-Waza (Ground) repertoire, while the Europeans are lazy on the ground and focus on getting the referee to stop the fight and stand them up.

    • @realtruth1448
      @realtruth1448 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Quidoute the issue with grappling is that the person can fight dirty, which isn’t accounted for in grappling training even for mma, eye poking, biting, etc etc, of course if you go for a quick takedown that eliminates dirty play, but also factor in if this person is by themselves, or with a group, and everything in between, also nobody is that tough, especially on their legs, roundhouse kicks are like getting hit with baseball bats, 2-3 roundhouse kicks to someone’s knee they won’t be capable of properly walking anymore, and their leg will go stiff after the 4-5 shot, of course imo the best thing to do in a self defense situation is a single leg snatch takedown, stay on your feet and control the person’s ankle, and then from their look around and see if this person has any buddies around, if he does, kick him a few times and just repeat the same cycle, single leg takedown, but use force with it to really rough up the next guy, if he doesn’t have any buddies, kick him and run away, but never run away with the opportunity that someone(especially a group) will chase you, the reason why that’s actually a bad idea is because if you gas out, and they catch up to you, you’re in big trouble, also running away you can slip & fall, or get hit by a car or anything, just isn’t a good idea to run away with the opportunity of being chased, stand your ground

    What he said about judo applies more at the super light weights. They throw themselves around like human crickets and the combustive energy can cause catastrophic injuries. As you advance up the weight classes you reach a sweet spot for dynamic athleticism, technique and strategy (Ono Shohei). It's also a spectacularly beautiful sport when you see the feats achieved. What makes Judo struggle is that it never had progressive thoughts to growth and expansion. How and why judo should be taught is a completely separate argument. But the concepts of the founder aren't really enforced and taught as a life changing and immersive experience built on the best concepts of being moral whilst engaging in a physical activity that makes dancing between life and death in real life super fast and mostly very safe. Judo has been downgraded over time for too many reasons. However everything being technically cyclical...

      @@harunbogdanic2077 If you go onto Statista and look at memberships and active members in the relevant associations the bigger countries have been going down steadily for at least 30 years, covid became a huge catalyst towards that. I'll give you an example, one book I read about Britain and it's formative years of Judo had an active membership base of over 100,000 people. Statista is showing a gradual drop from 30,000 or more currently. With the internet Judo has not faired well in claiming it's fair share of the marketplace. Whereas in Brazil you have a demographic of very hard working people who thrive on martial arts. Keep in mind the amount of Germans and Japanese in South America it makes sense that the martial arts are further embraced. Compared to many expensive hobbies Judo is successfully replicated in very poor countries at low levels.

      Khabib, Makhachev, Ankalaev and all the other Dagestani and chechen fighters practice sambo from their early age. Basically what they do is dominant Judo+ a bit of wrestling and later in careers when they start having more finishes and submission wins that means that they also mastered BJJ.

    Love practicing judo, I also practice Taekwondo and Hapkido, in my experience (black belt since 1980) from various self defense encounters, judo has helped me tremendously in confidence of close up situation, however I have always been able to control my distance and use my kicks , sidekick to the solar plexus and down he goes, his buddies retreated and ran off, generally speaking I stay out of high risk areas , yet I have been attacked by a gang of three thugs in my own dojang, no retreating acceptable, any honorable black belt will not accept defeat in his own school, no mercy all cobra Kai! To their surprise that “karate shit “ did work. But if they had managed to get in and grab me judo would have been useful, but usually they come swinging for the ko and taekwondo (we do old school karate style hands , feet , elbows, knees, head butt) , or good striking is good to have, I will say that judo gives one great awareness of defending any grappling, like the attacker reaching out to grab or strike and either taking a grip and doing a throw or avoiding, with counter ; but my preference is to take em out with a powerful kick, mid to low section, but one must adjust the distance to have the space to do that, and strong kicks take lots of practice, probably more so than hand techniques or throws and submissions. The best way of cocking knee high and tight with proper extension and quick retraction is a harder skill to acquire than most others in my experience and opinion, so I feel those that put down the use of striking martial arts due to their lack of ability just don’t put in the proper practice with quality instruction

    "I am the shark, the ground is my ocean" ... don't play their game and stay on shore then lol ... learning bjj is about as useless as learning portuguese or learning how to surf, it's good to know if you find yourself in these exceptional situations but why would you go to a hellhole like Brasil, why would you surf in shark-infested waters, why would you willingly put yourself in danger in a self defence scenario by going to the ground willingly, at least judo will teach you how to get back up and LEAVE the Danger Zone instead of prolonging your risk of getting headstomped ... maybe bjj is useful to learn if only for 1 thing and thing only: to develop an understanding on how NOT to do self-defence :)

    Johns wrong in describing jiujitsu as a "series of blunders", its's just that it's far more in depth and intricate. In all those other sports you have that home run aspect, in jiujitsu there's no such thing. You have to work and grind it out to earn that submission and that takes a great amount of technical expertise alongside conditioning.
