Thanks for this video Simon. I recently switched from Sony to Nikon after owning the A1 and an FX3. I don't regret it at all, and this video echoes some my exact thoughts about the A7V and why I switched. I don't understand what Sony is doing and their weird "over-segmentation". Nikon isn't perfect, but I as a consumer understand where they are going and the value they are going to provide to me and my wedding videography business. That is worth much more to me than sensor technology being half a generation ahead.

@@contentm3893 Yep, but it appears Sony doesn't allow other companies to use the sensors that appear in their mirrorless line - A1ii, A7Siii, A7V, etc. now that Nikon owns Red, perhaps now we will start to see sensors fully designed by Nikon and just manufactured by Sony or other companies like Tower Jazz (who Nikon has also used in the past).

You make some really good points in this video. What stood out to me was when Andre was talking about the frames per second and how the "full 26 fps would be too close to the A1". You have to wonder just what kinds of cameras the industry could/would be producing if they weren't having to try and segement their extended lines. People love to talk about the Canon "cripple hammer", but it's not limited to just Canon.

And the A1ii being so close to the R5 mkii argument always misses some huge points that are important for sports/wildlife shooters, such as sensor readout time. Viewfinder magnifications and resolution, and that insanely useful LCD screen mechanism. Help, yes. Totally solve? That 200-800 is considerably longer and heavier than, say, the 100-500. The grip will help with balance, and regardless of what some may say, steadiness. It's about inertia. A big, heavy rifle is easier to keep steady, provided you can handle the extra weight. But if it's too heavy for you, you will always be unsteady.

I totally agree with what you said. Sony's marketing strategy is beneficial for them but hurts the consumer by making them buy multiple bodies to obtain certain features that may not overlap. Giving something as simple as 4k 60 uncropped in the A7V will completely eliminate the need for the A7Siii or future A7SV. As a Sony user, I really love what Nikon is doing with the Z8 Z9 and Z6iii as most of the crucial features you need are available between all 3 bodies. We'll see what Sony will do but I dont have high hopes for the A7V as I can almost garantee that Sony will pull something silly and restrict the A7V in some major way. As I ponder the landscape of consumer digital cameras these last few years the more I feel that each manufacturer marches to the beat of its own drum developing its own long-term strategy rather than continuously looking over its shoulder at what the competition is doing. If Sony was trying to second guess what Canon was going to do with the R1, would they have guessed that Canon would put a 24MP stacked sensor in the thing? As far as I am concerned post- Nikon Z8, only three “Wow” cameras were released: the Canon R5 II, and the Fujifilm GFX-100 II and the Sony A9 III; the rest have been evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
Let’s not forget that the A7 “X” is the entry level to the line. Those hoping for A1 II performance for the same price as the A7 IV is smoking something funny. Moreover, IMHO, the A7 never competed with the A7S especially given the A7S III’s sensitivity and dynamic range which goes unmatched for those Sony cameras not using its sensor. I’d reckon the A7 V will still take a back seat to Sony's more video oriented cameras. Sure, there should be a bump up correcting some of the A7 IV's shortcomings but expecting an 8K killer is simply unrealistic. Rather than that 44 MP sensor, my money is on a semi-stacked implementation of the 33MP sensor; the advantages outweigh its limitations for an entry level A7 model. The inclusion of a CFExpress 4.0 reader along with the matching PCIe 4.0 bus as well as a beefier processor would sure help speed up moving things around; a bold move that should take care of the rolling shutter issues people constantly whine about.
FYI, Simon. I went to order that Angelbird card reader you spoke about several days ago but I was unable to pre-order it so I got a sweet 32” QD-OLED computer monitor instead. I hope that B&H affiliate link was able to give you a cut.

I just think that sony kind of dunked on us with the release of the a9iii for $6000, $500 less than the A1. We are missing, a stacked 24-33 megapixel camera with a fast readout for around $4200-$4800. Nikon chose their route with the z8, canon chose to update their r5 with matching specs (close to z8)... Sony went nuts and gave us a global shutter, in the A9iii that costs wayyy to much to even compete with the other lines, and the a7r5 stays as a high mp, slower camera. if you look at Sony's lineup you can either buy a camera for $2500, $3900, $6000, or $6500 lol. its just insane, so for that reason alone im holding out hope that sony keeps the a7c as the baseline, and then start adding cameras to fill that gaps, if that's a 44mp A75.. so be it, because after the z6iii and z8, im tempted to just buy a nikon body and use my sony lenses on it.

Hmm, Simon .. feels odd when Sony would use the a7v to go after the old R5 while running away from the lower resolution but higher IQ position of the Z6iii and the promising R6iii with a rolling-free stacked sensor. I believe this market place is even more tilted towards video compared to the Z8/R5ii .. so I'm puzzled Sony would have no stacked sensor answer !!

@@OrdinaryFilmmaker indeed, but .. the a7iv seemed for the past years to dominate the segment between $2k and $3k which seems to be the sweet spot for large sales volumes in FF cameras. When it grows up to 8k video, it will move above $3k and distances itself from its competition which remains loyal to 24 megapickles for the foreseeable future. With the spicy pricetag of the a1ii, there's perhaps room for an el-cheapo a1ii with a rolling shutter, but not at the expense of no longer offering a hybrid camera in the sweet spot of the market.
The 8k sensor Andrea Pizzini mentions may will start yet another branch of the a7, like and a7a (for mini a1) but Sony marketing will likely dig up another character from the alphabet 🙈

I don't think there will be a direct successor to the A7S3. But that out of the way i also don't think the A7V will have a new sensor. It will be like a A7CII in a new body i think because otherwise it is too close to the A1II which has not changed much if it has 42MPX stacked. Or they will cripple the stack sensor to be only used in video.

  • @amermeleitor

I think Sony should focus more in simple things that matter and are cheap to develop:
    - Open Gate recording, even if it's only 8bit or line skipped 10bit
    - Record to an SSD via USB-C, that's a big thing not only for video, but for burst photography too
    - Better slowmo / high frame rates for video, with AF, even if it's with a crop, 8bit and line skipped
    - Reduce the rolling shutter even if that mean a bit less dynamic range.

    Hi!
Who knows really what Sony will do, I understand that people might cross fingers for a 44 mp sensor, would it be stacked, though? I remember that you did a video talking about this sensor and the rumor that it could go to the a9iii. However, having so many high mp cameras could indeed canibalize sales, but that's just what I think. On the other hand, I think people underestimate the versatility that a 24 mp camera offers, like the Z6iii for example: smaller files, faster transfer, less storage space. Event photographers really like these type of cameras. Also, what would be the price? still the 2500$?
Anyway, Sony has a tendency to keep the same sensor for 2 generations, so let's see what happens.
    All best!

I don't know what to think. Sony usually was 4 years in the future compared to the competitors, now Sony is 4 years in the past, except for the A9 III.
Sony needs to make a big step to beat the competitors.
This A7V will obviously have a new body introduced by the A9III, AI Processing unit.
Sony usually keep their sensors during 2 generations. The 33 MP sensor introduced on the A7IV can be used on the A7V with a faster read out speed, improved colours, noise reduction and dynamic range.
    Will it have Pre-capture ?

Well, idk. We have sony a7RV on the market already, so I don't think that a7V should surpass it so greatly (if we stick to Sony's logic). I think it will be similar to R5, only less megapixels. If we get 4k60 uncropped, it would be nice already (imo). The specs mentioned in this video most likely could be implemented in a7VI model, imho. It's not unreasonable to say that the Simple 7th Series are in a certain price range, and if they put everything in it that's said in this video, the point of the Simple 7 Series will be also lost and out of Sony's logic.

What I want from Sony is a camera with the same resolution as the A7 IV maximum but definitely faster read out speed (ideally a stacked sensor) and thus the ability to shoot 4K 60p (ideally 120p) without crop. The AI chip and the new style screen are pretty much a given. In my opinion, the biggest problem with Sony is that they have so many different cameras that it's really hard for them to bring something that can find its place on the market without canibalizing the other cameras.

They won't end up cannibalizing A1 II sales even with a bold A7V because people buy A7 series for it's value proposition at ~ $2000. So people will anyway never spend spend $6500. As more and more content creators are moving towards hybrid model, you can no longer keep people interested in a different A7S series. Most filmmakers who purely shoot videos are already on FX series. Rest of the target customers are hybrid shooters and will be considering A7V for next purchase instead of a new A7S model anyway.
With that said, I would actually appreciate if Sony focus on IQ improvement instead of more megapixels. 44MP would be a memory hog and introduce ugly noise levels. I'd rather have ~ 30 MP sensor with better readout, faster AI AF, and faster burst shooting.

well Andrea thinks it will have the same 33MPx sensor as A7IV. That 44MPx sensor is an option that he sees less likely. Also it would canibalise nothing. A7SIII is dead line (hopefully) and also its main feature is second base ISO at 1600 instead of 400, giving it much cleaner image in low light. That wasnt canibalised by A7VI, nor would it be canibalised by A7V with higher resolution. Only camera the 44MPx option would canibalise is a 42MPx A7RIII and not even that if they differentiate by cost. Also possibility is to discontinue it completely.
My quess is the same old 33MPx, just add AI chip and upgraded A9III style body. And if they really put that new 44MPx in it, the speed will be 15FPS just to not be too close to A1.

This is completely false. There is no way the sensor is changing 2 years back to back on the A7 series. Theres honestly no reason to increase the resolution either. The immediate competition for the A7V are the Canon R6 Mark ii and the Nikon Z6iii which are both 24mp which is so much better for a do it all camera. Sony needs to wake up because they are definitely in last place in my book when it comes to specs and usability.

The A7V can’t cannibalize cameras that are already obsolete. The FX3/A7SIII are dead lines and Sony knows it. Keeping 12MP allowed them to get to 4k120 easily. Now that everyone has the processing power for higher MP cameras to do 4k120 there’s really no need for a 12MP camera anymore.
8.7ms sensor readout speed was fast back then. Now the 45MP Canon R5mii has a faster sensor readout speed.
The real issue is how they put distance between this and the A1II. The 5MP difference will be a non factor for most so how else will they cripple it? No pre capture and worse body?
