  • Airfix Heinkel He.111 H-6 in 1/72 scale by The Inner Nerd
    Instructional time lapse video of the painting and weathering of the 1/72 scale Heinkel He.11 H-6 by Airfix in as shown by The Inner Nerd
    The first part of this video shows the use of Photo Etched parts and scratch building techniques to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays. Locitite 406 CA superglue is used in this process combined with CA superglue accelerator/activator to join the two dissimilar materials.
    The second part shows surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty modelling filler/putty and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts using a range of sand papers from 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000p dpi grit papers.
    Also Black Basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1000, 1200 & 1500 Finishing Surfacer" thinned with cellulose lacquer thinners to prime the surface ready for painting, sprayed through an airbrush using Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
    The third part of the video demonstrates the BLACK-BASING technique used to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
    Also included in this section is the Engine Exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers (Airframe Aluminium, Aluminium, Steel, Jet Exhaust, Copper & Pale Burnt Metal) and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect.
    3 layers of Tamiya X-22 Ts-13 clear gloss seal the decals in. This can be decanted and sprayed through an airbrush such as the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo or sprayed directly from the aerosol spray rattle can.
    Decals follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes and panel lines of the surface which you can see in the video.
    Next is the weathering of the model. This is started using Abteilung 502 & Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with white spirit to a wash consistency. Then used as a panel line wash the oil is applied across the model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including Unthinned Abteilung 502 Oil Paints to create streaking and water marks, along with AK Interactive weathering Pigments (Gun Metal, Russian Earth, Europe Earth, Medium Rust and Pigment Fixer, Worn Effects, Dark Streaking Grime Rainmark Effects) concludes weathering.
    The final part of the video explains the final assembly of small parts including landing gear, lights, antennas and canopy fitment as the model nears completion. All final assembly is completed with Loctite 406 CA superglue.

    I think you're probably the most accomplished modeler on TH-cam when it comes to painting. I't incredible the layers and the depth of layers used. Your use of mottling gives it the most realistic effects.
    Thanks

      BennyCFD Thank you! that means a lot 🖒 I would say the paint stages of the builds are my favourite. I like to try and replicate the effects as true as possible to the reference photos I use, with a little added imagination too of course 😉

      Thank you. This is one of Airfix's best ones in my opinion. If you've done 4 you should be ready but what does it matter. If you want to do it go for it! Enjoy the build for what it is and learn :)

  • @cerec69
    @cerec69 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m just amazed at the quality of the kit that gives results like this without modifying the parts significantly. I’ve had a B17 for 2 years now and still not started building it.
    Couldn’t decide whether to invest in an airbrush. Having looked at real aircraft such as Spitfires and Hurricanes the paint finish on the real thing looks so slapdash. Looks like the paint was applied with a 6 inch brush rather than spray painted.
    Great end result and inspirational. 😎👍🏻

    @grantv2313 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Really enjoyed this video. I made a nice model of an He 111 25 years ago and I’m getting ready to do another one. Looking back at this video what would you have done differently? The initial paint job was really neat. I thought it was going to be a unique camo and then you basically covered it all up. What was the idea behind doing that? Was it trying to imitate raw steel before painting? It seems the final coat of paint mostly covers anything underneath. Great job on masking off the canopy. I used tape for my canopy frame which was also tedious. I plan to do a lot nicer model this time although my first one was pretty good when I was young. There’s so many paint schemes and versions to choose from. It makes it a very interesting aircraft. Some models did have a little tail gun, idk if all did. It basically pointed straight back and couldn’t move. Probably had limited effect.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thank you. Looking back I wouldn't have used dark washes on the topide at least - I would have made it more dusty using yellow/sand washes. The painting techinique is to build up severval thicknesses of paint so that the overall colour is more vaired than spraying it in even coats of the same colour. It's a process called black basing and the last couple of layers are used to blend everything into a sightly more even tone, it doesn't destroy the work underneath, just smoothens it.
      The metallics underneath were to lay down the metal of the airframe to then chip away the top coats for more realistic chipping and wear. I had to apply this to a lerge area as it would be covered later so I'd effectively be working blind on it's location.
      Good luck on your models and thanks for watching :)

    Looks good. I'm not sure about the 'marble-like' effect underneath, but otherwise very nice. Btw the dorsal gun position didn't work like that - the rear bit of plexiglass folded back into the main part, if that makes sense!

    Is your airbrush a standard model or is the 0.15 nozzle an accessory? Difficult to pinpoint with so many choices our there.
    Thanks!

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you and thanks for watching. Yes the 0.15mm is a spare part. The airbrush cam with a 0.2mm as standard. Be aware that you’ll need both needle and nozzle to be matching sizes so if you’re swapping you’ll have to order both for it to work as it should

    No idea why people are complaining about the weathering. There shouldn't be any rules or judgement, and you shouldn't have to paint to satisfy someone else. Painting models is an art form with different styles, some you may like, some you wont. Personally I appreciate the sense of drama heavy shading and OTT weathering produces on some models, and it works really well on this 111

      i get your point, but at the same time, sometimes there are rules and judgements as there as contests for modeling, and we are building models of a specific subject with individual markings that existed in history. (so if tyou are dooing a "what-if" then all bets are off) Extreme overweathering and uneven weathering at that, just seems way to common these days, forinstance allied bomber crews flew 25 sorties, and had a 30% chance of survival for those 25 sorties, some of them flew more, but point beeing, the planes didn't last long enough for the extreme weathering to occur in the European theater.
      The sun drenched salty corroding pacific theater is a different ballgame. BUT if you are still making a flying wreak (artist prerogative), then the glass and decals needs to be weathered to the same extent, otherwice it just looks wierd (these are my personal thoughts on the subject, your "No idea why" triggered this responce. so its not meant as hate just info)

      I appreciate both points and I use modelling as an art rather than a snippet of actual time of an actual aircraft. That level of modelling is too restrictive for me and I like to exercise my artistic license at least a little on each project. I don't apply to modelling competitions because this is a hobby for me, I don't feel the need to compete against any competition or make it competitive in the slightest. Having said that I also agree with @Claes Wikberg where some weathering can be overdone and not look consistent. It's been a couple of years sicne I made this one and I have changed my approach to weathering significantly since, so the people judging my current work against this are mis-informed about my skill level now, hence some of the quite harsh comments about it being too much - thing is, if you never try you'll never learn, Push the limits of what you can do to learn how far to take it next time. Anyway thanks for the comment and thanks for watching :)

      Hello,
      My response was meant as a generic responce to Gary's "no idea why" question, so that's why i deliberately didn't comment on your HE 111 model in particular, it was more of a "why ppl disagree on the subject of weathering.."
      hence the:
      "(these are my personal thoughts on the subject, your "No idea why" triggered this response. so its not meant as hate just info)" in retrospect maybe I should have made it more clear that it was a generic response on that matter
      I didn't read through all the comments, but it's sad that some ppl feel the need to trash on ppl instead of focusing on constructive feedback.
      keep building!

    It is important to clean your He.111 every day twice for 2 minutes and use He.111paste to protect it from nasty chips and bullets.
