    Hi everyone, thanks for watching. The modelling stand I'm using is currently unavailable. Sorry for this inconvenience but I plan to make it available again at www.theinnernerd.com
    I hope this video will be able to help you out if you're new to modelling or new to some techniques used when making one. I tried to cover everything that has been asked in the comments sections from my other videos but keep it simple at the same time. Sorry if I don't shut up for a lot of the video, there's a lot to cover! Anyway here I go again...
    Let me know what you think and if you'd like to see more beginner/intermediate tutorial styled videos in the future and if so what should they cover?

      I've been following you for a long time, I only have one request if you include in the videos the dilution, pressure and size of the needle you use. Always at the top

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay that's good to know. Just for reference for others too here is my working pressures using my H&S Evo Silverline. The thinning ratios are never calculated to measurement, more paint-by-paint, but if you see here 20:18 and here 21:51 in the video you can see how the paint should spray.
      0.15mm needle/nozzle throughout all paintwork.

      @@hubristicmystic Hello. I would suggest waiting until the next day. Although these AK Real Colours dry to the touch almost instantly, it's best to leave them to properly cure overnight before applying masking tape or it could pull to paint with it when removed

    I've been an award winning aeromideller since the early 1970s (and I was aeromodelling even earlier than that). I know (almost) all of the tricks, but I'm happy to say even I have picked up new ideas today. This video should be promoted by all of the aircraft model kit manufacturers. It is absolutely superb. I take my hat off. Indeed, one of my many professional roles is that I'm a consultant educator. Not only do you really know your stuff, but you are a superb educator. Amazing. Such a pleasure to have found you. Now, all I have to do is to find your name and how to get in touch with you. Fantastic.

      Wow that's fantastic to hear, there truly are 1001 ways to make a model. With the amount of views this video is receiving I hope that one day it will get spotted, fingers crossed. And I appreciate the kind words, I work hard to try to both capture and convey what's happening on screen in an accessible way so I'm pleased to see that is recognised.
      If you'd like to contact me personally you can email me at the.inner.nerdyt@gmail.com if you'd like to talk further :)

    On the spectrum of plastic model videos on TH-cam, this is on the "masterclass" end. I have this very kit purchased for 40% off at an after xmas sale (being as cheap as humanly possible is one of the challenges I set for myself). I don't believe spending money makes great models...spending time makes great models. This is a great model upon which you lavished time. Thank you for sharing and i learned a lot about patience, layering, and paint chemistry!

      @TheInnerNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well as I mentioned in the video this equipment is what I've built up over the 5 years I've run the channel and been modelling. I'm doing this alongside a full time job unlike some of the other TH-camrs. But I hope the message got through that you don't need the most expensive tools, just higher quality ones combined with some good techniques and processes can make a relatively good model at the end. The skills throughout the video are what is needed to make a model to this standard, whether people think that is good or not is another debate. But there are many more processes that I missed out or simplified in an attempt to keep the video beginner to intermediate friendly.
      The only tools to make this were the ones shown at the beginning at the video. So some snips, a pin vise, sandpapers, tapes and an airbrush, then of course the paints of your choice. If you're new to modelling you don't necessarily need all of these immediately to make a model, but you will to make one turn out like this. Thanks for watching :)

And what do you know, for my first project I just happened to have chosen a 1/72 Airfix Spitfire (the Mk.Ia kit). This let’s me go back to the end 70s beginning 80s where I was really into modeling! Especially early ww2 aircraft. I won many IPMS contests, reaching 1st place in 3 US state’s. It’s astounding how one stagers the search for more authenticity and perfection. Does squadron Green putty still exist? Or Flowquill airbrush paint’s?
    Airfix was in it’s mold details quite coarse, hasagawa and Tamina was the none plus ultra at that time. But not all models came from good mold’s and one had to adjust the details. One tends to over weather or detail , I think this is where the perfection starts. Often to large rivets or panel joints. Less is often more !
    Question does a silver paste still exist? I used it for creating bare metal optics, it’s somewhat oil based so if oversprayed one can use a piece of tape to pull of bits of deck paint on leading edge areas to simulate chipped paint.
    Nice to see that modeling is still going good. I wonder if kids still get into it? Or has the PlayStation taken all the room ?
    Nice vid

      So many of us older guys seem to be returning to this fabulous hobby. Speaking from my own experience, I tried to introduce my own children to the pleasures of model building but they just didn't get into it, in part because there are so many alternative attractions (including PlayStation and other video games) and also because they didn't have the same affinity for those classic World War Two aircraft that those of us born in the decades after the war felt. There was also an issue with patience! Back in the day, if the weather was too nasty to allow us to play outside, there really weren't that many other ways to enjoy play time but building a model aircraft was most certainly one of the most appealing ones for many of us.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for watching :) Starting cheaply and simply is a good method. You'll need to learn the basic techniques I outline in the video before trying them all out with the more professional equipment. The basic tools in my opinion would be; Snips, Tweezers, Sandpaper, Extra Thin Cement, Paint, Brushes and that's about it. That is the bare bones of what will help you make a scale model. All of the other stuff is to add the effects like weathering and to get the decals to sit properly - but isn't entirely necessary if you don't want to - that can come later :)
      There is a link in the description to a good starter setup for an airbrush. Don't go expensive straight away - learn the ropes first before you splash out on an expensive brush. And also a more expensive brush isn't actaully necessary. The airbrush in the description is easily good enough as long as you keep it clean. I think it's a myth that a super expensive airbrush will do a bette rjob. In my experience the quality comes from the paint and thinning along with pressure adjustment. Unless you're painting miniatures an expensive brush is a little bit overkill.
      I hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

I will use some of the equipment and techniques from this video in my next build and will probably return again to this video in future. So yes, for a simple build using paints, glue and a single brush from a starter kit, this video is over complicated but for a beginner who wants to take the hobby seriously and produce a decent finished model this video is probably the best of its kind on TH-cam

With each model try something new, something that’ll require you to get another piece of equipment. Over time you’ll soon build up an arsenal of equipment that you can use to make every model. Just from reading your comments accompanying the video I can see you are a perfectionist with professional attention to detail. I wonder if younger viewers still have the mindset for this in the new media driven throw away society. Your personality shines in the build. Is model building your only hobby sir? I am 66 and perhaps trying my hand at too many activities, As my father used to say - Jack of all trades and master of none. None of these supplies are available where I live in Eswatini Africa - In fact there is not a single hobby shop in the entire country. It does make the hobby extremely expensive as you have to import every single item - if you can afford to do so. Best build channel I have found to date. Keep up the great work.

      I try my best to share what I've learned to viewers, being that guide I looked for when I started to make models again. There does seem to be a younger audience still in this hobby which is nice to see. The TV doesn't always fill that void and need to actually make something luckily. I do have other hobbies which are all part of the channel - photography, film making, 3D printing - so that's also why I started the channel, one mega project to bring them all together. I'm sorry to hear that the hobby isn't accessible in Africa, I hope my channel fills that need for you. Thanks for watching :)

      It's not entirely necessary to to have all of this equipment, nor is it necessary to complete a model. But you'll need it if you want to complete one to this level. I'm hoping that viewers can use this as a reference for basic techniques on which ever area of model making they struggle with or have questions about. So over time they can apply it to various models rather than in one hit. I've been modelling for 5 years now and got to this level by trying things out.
      Starting cheaply and simply is a good method. The basic tools in my opinion would be; Snips, Tweezers, Sandpaper, Extra Thin Cement, Paint, Brushes and that's about it. @@TheInnerNerd That’s exactly what I thought you were doing: Mostly for a nice demonstration and partly for a “Test” or “Warm up” towards the high visibility important parts.
      I noticed you use silver for your chipped paint aluminum effect. Dad used to do that in a whiteish very very light gray. If you look at any aluminum that has a patina (age/oxidation), it’s a whitish color and not a bright silver. I’m not trying to be impolite to your “Mad skills” (As the kids say), but Dad and I built some great models. We did lots of 1/48 WWII fighters and bombers and also some nice WWI planes and a huge Gotha bomber where the thread rigging took longer than the model itself! Thank you, Sir.

      That’s right it does look more matte than bright silver. I’ll try that out the next time I get to use the effect. I find it interesting how our mind can trick us into seeing what we know it to be, not actually what it is. The same reason I don’t use black in my weathering (unless it needs it) because we think dirt is black, but dark blue or brown is often much more realistic.

      Hello and welcome. Your method is also good although I find it less controllable when relying on air to do the work vs a brush. Best of luck with your projects and thanks for watching:)

    I used to spend hundreds of hours building models, I loved it but my main flaw was painting, no matter how I tried I could never get a good paint job and so my models never looked as good as they could have. But what a superb job you did with that! Amazing.

      Thank you and yes, that's the main reason why I got back into modelling. They never looked like they did on the box or in my minds eye. It's taken some time and equipment but experience has now got me there I think, but I'll never stop learning on each one I make! Thank you again and thanks for watching :)

    I made the original 1/72 Mk IX Spit, 60+ yrs ago. Later, my younger brother put it into an airbrushed diorama. I'm in awe at your skills & attention to detail. Reginald Mitchel, Joe Smith and Alex Henshaw would appreciate your efforts.

      I think at some point every modeller has made a 1/72 Spit so that's why I chose it as the subject for this video :) Thank you and I hope they would appreciate my efforts too. Thanks for watching :)

    Great video, and I love the music, it was not intrusive and gentle. This video is one of the best. I used to build models as a child in the 70s and early 80s. I’m interested in doing so now in my 50s.

    A wealth of knowledge, and great tips and tricks. Thank you for sharing such great detail, and I like your approach to it having too much of the “cartoony” panel lines. Thanks again!

    Spent my childhood in the 70's building Spits, Hurricanes - a Westland Lysander ( Yes, they had one! ) and many more ... I'm keen to start building again, it's a wonderful hobby regardless of age!

      Well I hope this video has helped inspire you to build once more. It's changed a lot since then by all accounts but the feeling of building a kit still remans the same, go and get a kit and some simple tools! Best of luck an thanks for watching :)

    This is superb. Amazing workmanship. I started building Airfix kits in the late 1960s, painting them (crudely) with a brush and tiny tins of Humbrol Enamel, but this is a whole different world.
