My husband of 32 years and i considered The Eagles our band...Hotel California best song ever. My husband passed away 2 yrs ago...thanks for playing this.
The music to this song was written by Don Felder (on that Gibson double neck in the video) on a 12 string guitar. Then he and Joe Walsh (on the tele) put together the duet guitar parts. Don Henley (drummer) wrote most of thevlyrics with colaboration from Glenn Frey (12 string acoustic). The lyrics were written separately while Walsh and Felder hung around shooting pool and chilling out. Felder actually had to re-write/transpose the music in 3 different keys to match up with Henley's vocal range to get it right. The two electric solos aren't really a duel but a call and answer duet that blends so perfectly it is other-worldly. If this version blew you away, check out the acoustic version from the Hell Freezes Over tour opener in New York in 1994. Its on a whole other level where Henley only sings (with some hand held percussion bits) while another drummer handkes the kit. Timothy B Schmidt (who replaced Randy Meisner mid '77 tour) uses an electric bass but all other guitar parts are acoustic (Felder and Walsh on 6 string, Frey on a 12). Some additional percussion lends to the Spanish flavor of the mostly "unplugged" performance and it fits perfectly with the song's story that Henley so magically told. How do I tell you I'm a huge Eagles fan without saying it in so many words? 😁

Hey Shon, I was in that audience when they filmed this song😃...........It couldn't have turned out any better if they had recorded this song in the studio; in fact I believe the audience brought out the best in the Eagles 🔥🎸 (plus NO auto-tune, AI, or other tricks). All of the songs were written by the band members, & they always told a story (& you could understand the lyrics). My favorite band & song of that era ❤🔥

Even the last song after 3 hours of playing (mostly on the drums) Don still hit every note of Desperado pitch perfect with power and conviction..... in his 60s..... Don Felder plays the double neck. Joe Walsh plays the 2nd lead. Each of them are masters in their own right, but together they are incomparable. This is truly a masterpiece. Musically, this song has a definite Spanish flavor. Lyrically, I always thought of a lone rider, way out in the SoCal desert at dusk, riding into The Twilight Zone.
There is a video out there, when Stevie Ray Vaughn is playing such a double neck guitar with his brother Jimmy. Both Brothers on one instrument same time . incredible talents both. The back standing cannot even see the instrument, wrapping his arms around his brother.
Your reactions are spot on! You described the meaning of Hotel California better than anyone ever has! I'm 66 and saw The Eagles back in the late 70's and the first thing I did was buy the Eagles Album, which I still have and play. We lost one of founders of The Eagles, Glenn Frey in 2016. RIP Glenn.Don Henley, the drummer is singing but every single one of them were lead singers. The guitar solo with Felder & Joe Walsh is the best ever done.
This song, for anyone wondering, is all about life in the fast lane, as a rock star. Touring, drugs, alcohol, different women every night, throwing themselves at you. The heaven, or hell part is basically explaining how when your trying to make it, the life style looks so inviting, but when you get there, its exhausting burnout, drug addiction, alcohol addiction, STD's, women trying to trap you. The rock and roll lifestyle has been the ruin, and even death of a lot of talented stars over the decades.
I actually used to think this song was about a man who got into a car crash and wound up in purgatory. "Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light" would be him driving into the headlights of another car, then "My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night" would be him dying. "This could be heaven or this could be hell" is him wondering where he wound up, "we are prisoners here of our own device" and "you can never leave" hinting at the nature of where he is. Even though I've since learned the intention was that the song is based on the celebrity industry, I still love my own interpretation of it lol
Phil Collins is another badass lead singer/drummer combo. 🙌. He was in the band Genesis and also had an incredible solo career. Enjoy that rabbit hole!!!! ❤ (start with the song "In the air tonight". 🔥🔥
Thank you sir for helping bridge a generational gap of music, I grew up on some of the music you react to, it is so refreshing to see a younger audience discover and enjoy the same music I grew up on!! So Thank You for doing what you do!
There was a lot of speculation about the meaning of this song, but Don Henley (lead singer on drums) finally spoke out and said the song is basically a metaphor for how life in California in the world of celebrity, can jade you…you become a slave to the lifestyle.
this album was recorded in part at Kemper Arena in KC Mo. I was there, it was FANTACTIC. If you open the album up, you will see a man leaning onto the stage taking photos. THATS ME!!!!!!!
In Oct. of '77, at the old Chicago Stadium, I was fortunate enough to see/hear this configuration of the band. -- 3 of the 4 original members ( Bernie Leadon, the banjo-picker, had left by then, & Randy Meisner, the late bass player, who would leave at the end of the tour), plus Don "Fingers" Felder ( the double -neck guitar player), & Joe Walsh ( previously from the James Gang). It was the first time i had heard "Hotel California" ; don't think i'll ever forget it.
@beatleschick1000 Yeah, probably the best, but I miss Bernie's 'country-rock contribution to their sound, like his 5-string playing during the last minute or so of the original recording of "Take it Easy", or his vocals on tracks like: "Train Leaves Here This Morning".
White hillbilly boy from WV here. Loved your honest and charming reaction. Liked, Subscribed, and gonna follow you. Stay yourself, never become fake, and the sky’s your limit.
There are many interpretations of the meaning of the text. Personally, I think these methaphoric lyrics most likely reflect the California-centric American dream that draws fortune-seeking aspirants to Hollywood, from which they can (usually) never escape, even if they check out when things don't work out as desired... Masterpiece! All best from Germany and a happy new year to you!
One of the greatest bands ever!! They’re referring to Heroin, steely knives, you’ll always come back looking for that first hit!! You can check out but never leave
You just did a reaction to Jackson Browne. He is closely associated with The Eagles, particularly in the early years of their careers. One of the most significant connections between Jackson Browne and the Eagles is the song "Take It Easy," which became one of the Eagles' signature hits. In the early 1970s, Jackson Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy" with Glenn Frey, a founding member of the Eagles. The story goes that Browne had written a portion of the song but was having difficulty completing it. Frey heard what Browne had and suggested some changes to the lyrics, leading to the completion of the song. "Take It Easy" was released on the Eagles' debut album in 1972, and it became a major hit, reaching the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This success helped launch the Eagles' career, and the song remains one of their most iconic tracks. While this collaboration is one of the most well-known instances of Jackson Browne's interaction with the Eagles, it's worth noting that Browne and members of the Eagles maintained a friendly relationship over the years, with occasional collaborations and performances together. Their connection through "Take It Easy" is a significant part of both artists' musical histories.
We loss the beautiful bassist Randy Meissner last year. You should react to him singing 'Take It To The Limit', it's simply amazing. It's my most favorite song from the Eagles Also check out ......... 'New Kid In Town, Lyin' Eyes, I Can't Tell You Why, Best Of My Love, Take It Easy, Heartache Tonight, One Of These Nights, In The City, Desperado and Life In The Fast Lane' These are my favorite songs from this amazing band!
I loved Randy Meisner so much! Always my favorite eagle. Not just talent, but everything I heard him say or written about him, he was the nicest guy around in the 70s rock world. Very humble and shy, which ended up making him leave the band when he didn’t feel he could hit that last high note for every concert on take it to the limit, and Glenn Frey bullied him till they fist fought, and Randy quit. RIP dear man.
@@beatleschick1000 ....... I'll be honest here! Because I was a little girl, when I first heard 'Take It To The Limits', I knew who the Eagles were, just didn't know who was singing or any of the band members were. It was years later when I discovered Glen, Don and Joe, and that they were part of the band. It wasn't until I discovered the wonders of youtube and found the video and that's when I found out that it somebody else singing!...lol... Which made me fall in love with the song even more! Randy just made the song even more special. I saw the Reels 'Breaking The Band' and was very disappointed in the way Glen and Don, mistreated both Randy and Don Fielder (did I spell his last name right?). Just downright disappointed in them! 'Take It To The Limits' will always and forever be Randy's song!!!
The drummer/singer is Don Henley, he most of their lyrics on many of the Eagle's hit songs. The double neck guitarist is Don Felder was the co-writer of Hotel California.
So the drummer/ singer ( Don Henry )..is in the rock hall both with the eagles and for his solo career as is . the acoustic guitar player ( Glen Fyre ) who was mentored by his good friend from age 16 or 17 by a 20-21 year old Bob Seager and the " other guitar player ) is in the rock hall with this band , another band ( the James Gang ) and for his solo career and one of the best guitar players ever...Joe Walsh...who Stevie Nicks ( F ). Of Fleetwood Mac , Fame called the love of her life even though they had split many years ago but remained friends...the double neck guitar player Dan Felden is/ was vastly underrated , the bassist ( Timothy Schmidt ) also did some lead vocals...incredible talent in one band
I love your reaction.im a 68 yo grandmother. I dig that you got the song from the beginning. I love that you didn't tackle through the song. So many young people make fools of themselves listening to our music. I'd love for you to check out the Edgar Winter Group. Especially, Frankenstein, the studio version and Tobacco road. Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven. The 70s had so many great songs it would take you months to enjoy them all.
I never tire of watching people react to this for the first time. It just never gets old. This has to be one of the top five songs of all time! Joe Walsh is a guitar God! 🌺✌️
"Tumbleweed desert type of feel to it". Wow! what a great description of a song I have listened to 10's of thousands of time by now. Your reactions continue to be worth watching!!! Great insights as your journey to raise your consciousness manifests before all of our eyes!!!!!
Glen Frey (May he rest in peace) is playing an acoustic/electric guitar. There’s a pickup in the body of the guitar that picks up the tone the guitar is resonating at and amplifies it. I’m sure he’s got a sizable amp behind it, because you can hear the rhythm guitar (his) in this recording. Don Felder is on the double neck Gibson and Joe Walsh is on his Fender. Both amazing guitarists and artists in their own right. Fun fact: Joe Walsh is married to Ringo Starrs’ wife’s sister, so they’re brother-in-laws. That’s why you see him show up and participate in Ringo’s All Starr Band occasionally. If you want to see some great finger picking style on electric guitar, check out Dire Straights “Sultans of Swing” live in London. It will ROCK YOUR WORLD!
It really speaks to someone who lived the decadence of the seventies through their university years in SoCal. Left physically to live in the PNW - "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave..." mentally.
Many a simpleton might underestimate a shirtless brother with the mushroom cloud hairstyle, but not I. You have some of the most insight of all the reactors that I've ever watched and never cease to amaze me.
Joe Walsh (Red Bandana) is one of my favorite artists. Check him out solo in "Life's Been Good" & "Rocky Mountain Way". The guy could party his ass off, slightly insane, & is definitely one hell of a guitarist. His Eagle bandmate Glenn Fry one called Joe "an interesting bunch of guys." That about sums Joe up 😂
The Eagles (and a few other artists) are the soundtrack to my childhood. This song to me is like an old friend. I was finally lucky enough to see them live in 1995 on the Hell Freezes Over tour. I kid you not when I tell you it was like a religious experience.
Sometimes when we think about heaven and hell, we think literal clouds or fire, but until we feel that dread deep-down, that true regret that haunts us at our very core, we really don't know what it's like to be trapped in hell. I love that Hotel California is about whatever you need it to be about. It can be about addiction or about a brothel or about infidelity and it works, no matter what. The human soul knows how it feels to be bad, and it can feel good, until it comes time for it to be over, then we have to pay the check. That feeling of existential pleasure and dread at knowing that you can never take back what you just did, it's forever haunting and it's the story of all of our lives. I love this song so much.
They also have solo careers. Don Henley’s (drummer) Actual Miles is excellent. Glenn Frey’s “the one you love, “smugglers blues”, the heat is on”, and “you belong to the city”.
I did try to tell him . I hope he sees it . I hope the eagles can stop hurting g their fans by doing this . All it does is hurt them and the new generation from being fans . Why hurt the little guy ? It’s no different than a bar !
1977 year I graduated high school and you know how many times can you be driving down the road in a 69 Barracuda fastback with a 383 Super Commando with only 37k for $650.00 in mint condition. And all of a sudden you hear this song from Heart come over the airwaves and Ann and Nancy Wilson releasing Ohhh,"Barracuda ", like that just doesn't happen anymore not ever. And you're listening and all of a sudden you hear this beautiful voice saying ewww, Barracuda. And you mash the brake pedal to the floor and say wtf, wow. Because you're driving a freaking kick ass car and out of nowhere comes this song, I mean when would that ever happen today? It never would not in a lifetime. You have to think about how the times they are a changing. Whew, it's hot in here.
Don Henley (singing this song and on drums) and Glenn Frey (acoustic guitar on far left - wearing univ colorado shirt) were co-lead singers for the band. All of the members added vocals to songs from time to time though! Joe Walsh (illinois sweatshirt on far right) also sang lead on a few songs. Don Felder on the 12 string and Joe absolutely shred on this song. That guitar solo is iconic.
I was at the “last” eagles concert at the Meadowlands 1979 in New Jersey. ‘When hell freezes over”. Guess what. Hell froze over and they returned. But they were the music of my youth before that.
The song is a metaphor about the allures of California. Also the music industry to a degree. People go to California because of the pretty image in their minds. Beautiful beaches, beautiful women, free love in the atmosphere, and also the fame you can get if you make it. But when you get there, you realize there is a dark side that no one talks about. You only find out when you get there. Lots of metaphors in there about beautiful women, sex, drugs, addiction, etc. Even in the beginning, he talks about the warm smell of Colitas rising up in the air. Colita flowers were named after a Spanish photographer who often talked about femininity and sexuality. Great storytelling, great symbolism, and it does a really good job making you have imagery as you listen. The later half of the song is about the feeling of being trapped. After experiencing the dark side, they want to escape, but can’t for one reason or another. Addiction, contracts, etc. and even if you are able to leave, the record labels still owns your name and Music. So you may be gone, but they still have you. even if you die.
The drummer is Don Henley and when he went solo he made some bomb singles, including a track called Boys of Summer. You should definitely check it out!

I’m old and I tell you this is one of the best songs ever
YEEEESSSS! Welcome to the rabbit hole of The Eagles!!!!
Love Felders work on the Heavy Metal soundtrack.
Just so fun, to watch it over and over. I LOVE watching the faces of these young ones, when I I’m thinking, just wait.
You interpreted it really well as it’s absolutely a metaphor about drugs and addiction. One of the best.
There is a video out there, when Stevie Ray Vaughn is playing such a double neck guitar with his brother Jimmy. Both Brothers on one instrument same time . incredible talents both. The back standing cannot even see the instrument, wrapping his arms around his brother.
Love to see your reaction to this music. That's exactly how we felt in 1977!!
I listen to this song and I feel so much gratitude to exist during the time where such great music existed
The Eagles were one of the very few groups that used 5 part harmony in their vocals.
I always encourage any Eagles fan to watch their documentary. Very entertaining and informative.
I love the end of this video when Felder and Walsh are playing dueling guitars. Looks like they're having the time of their lives.
Honestly could be the best rock song, ever.
You get it. Thank you for actual listening
Eagles were a big band, all of them sang and played.the drum work on this song, while he sang was amazing.
I think this young man has a real appreciation for music and really think the reactions are genuine and fun to watch.
Phil Collins is another badass lead singer/drummer combo. 🙌. He was in the band Genesis and also had an incredible solo career. Enjoy that rabbit hole!!!! ❤ (start with the song "In the air tonight". 🔥🔥
He reacted to Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight” 7 months ago.
Don’t forget Levon Helm with the Band
@captainkangaroo4301 GREAT example. No one ever remembers them. 🤘🏼😄
Thank you sir for helping bridge a generational gap of music, I grew up on some of the music you react to, it is so refreshing to see a younger audience discover and enjoy the same music I grew up on!! So Thank You for doing what you do!
Eagles have so so so many legendary songs
Back when music was great and the world was full of kind happy people.
Saw them do this live in concert in Las Vegas with my wife now dying of cancer. Epic. Once in a lifetime.
So sad to hear what you both Are going threw I'm praying for your wife
There was a lot of speculation about the meaning of this song, but Don Henley (lead singer on drums) finally spoke out and said the song is basically a metaphor for how life in California in the world of celebrity, can jade you…you become a slave to the lifestyle.
Everything about this song is perfection 🔥🎯💯 Don’t forget Phil Collins as drummer & singer also.
Don Henley
@@BigOz517 yes, I know. I was referring to the fact when he said he didn’t know others who were the drummer & also the singer ✌🏻
Rare Earth also where the drummer sings lead vocals.
@@suecook1326Hi, yes you got that right. I guess there are many more but Phil came to mind at the moment. Thanks for the reminder ✌🏻
And, of course, Ringo Starr had a couple memorable lead vocals for the Beatles. The all-time best singer (who is also a drummer) is Karen Carpenter.
this album was recorded in part at Kemper Arena in KC Mo. I was there, it was FANTACTIC. If you open the album up, you will see a man leaning onto the stage taking photos. THATS ME!!!!!!!
Saw them LIVE in 1977, in Auburn, AL. 21,000 lighters high as hell!! One of the BEST times in Mt life!!
In Oct. of '77, at the old Chicago Stadium, I was fortunate enough to see/hear this configuration of the band.
Best lineup they ever had in my opinion!!
@beatleschick1000 Yeah, probably the best, but I miss Bernie's 'country-rock contribution to their sound, like his 5-string playing during the last minute or so of the original recording of "Take it Easy", or his vocals on tracks like: "Train Leaves Here This Morning".
Still love the Eagles but they’ll never be the same without Glenn Frey. Miss you so much Glenn, R.I.P. 💔♥️
The dual guitars at the end make it worth the wait.🤩🤩
It's a head trip, man. You should have lived through the 70s. This describes the vobes perfectly. 50 years later, still know every word.
@@ajijamison That might be true as well. The above just is my personal opinion, although I believe some aspects added in that I heard about before.
It's my most favorite song from the Eagles
Also check out ......... 'New Kid In Town, Lyin' Eyes, I Can't Tell You Why, Best Of My Love, Take It Easy, Heartache Tonight, One Of These Nights, In The City, Desperado and Life In The Fast Lane'
These are my favorite songs from this amazing band!
They were loved in the UK in the 70s .The whole album is good. They made us want to go to the USA.
i cant imagine how hard it would be to sing while playing drums, like id be breathing so irregularly
It’s about bands getting caught up on the music industry in 60’s-70’s in California.
The guy who wrote the music for this song, Don Felder, is playing the double-necked guitar.
Maybe one of the most musically talented groups top to bottom -- ever.
They sure can make those Guitars Sing
The song's about the dream of the mystical land of California! How so many people went there to change their lives.
His Eagle bandmate Glenn Fry one called Joe "an interesting bunch of guys." That about sums Joe up 😂
And don’t forget ‘Walk Away’ from when Joe Walsh had the James Gang.
The double guitar is being played by Don Felder. The other featured guitarist is Joe Walsh, who is a legend as a guitarist and singer.
The band went up in talent when they put in Joe Walsh great reaction rock on
They also have solo careers. Don Henley’s (drummer) Actual Miles is excellent. Glenn Frey’s “the one you love, “smugglers blues”, the heat is on”, and “you belong to the city”.
You are about to see some of the best guitar playing ever.
The Eagles. The most corporate band ever in history. Surprised this is still up.
I did try to tell him . I hope he sees it . I hope the eagles can stop hurting g their fans by doing this . All it does is hurt them and the new generation from being fans .
Why hurt the little guy ? It’s no different than a bar !
I view Life in the Fast Lane as the real world example of what this song is about.
One of the greatest fans of all time and one of the greatest songs of all time!
Don Felder on double guitar and Joe Walsh on single. In my opinion the best duet ever!!
The man with the white guitar wrote this song. His name is Don Felder.
