Don’t forget, whenever you’re at any live concert, no matter the music style, you’re supposed to yell out PLAY FREEBIRD at the top of your lungs.
Decades of tradition can’t be wrong.
That is absolutely correct.
@@freebirdtonyI remember yelling it from a mosh pit once in the 90s, and the band laughing and trying it!
@@BasedBuilders
Cool story, that's one for the books.
Absolutely true ❤
Stairway to Freebird!! Every band HATES when you yell that 😂
Nah, this is Ronnie, his younger brother took over years later (Johnny). Get this the middle brother is Donnie Van Zant, singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the band 38 Special, check them out.
They are known for their hit songs, including "Hold On Loosely" and "Caught Up in You", among various other Top 40 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 during the 1980s and early 1990s, including "Rockin' into the Night", "You Keep Runnin' Away", "If I'd Been the One", "Back Where You Belong", "Teacher, Teacher", "Like No Other Night", "Second Chance" and "The Sound of Your Voice".
Met Johnnv, briefly. He was getting in shape for the first "Reunion" tour. He was great!
Ronnie died 1977 and Johnny took over in 1987 at the 10 year reunion tour that started at the CDB Vol Jam
So I say this as a total term of endearment and with absolutely no malice or disrespect whatsoever but I will sometimes call .38 Special Lynyrd Skynyrd Light
That's about right.@@Tbirdhaynes
@@ericleonard2835 and Donnie toured with LSB for a while as well.
So sad to know that such an iconic band 3 months after this day the world would experience a devastating loss of some of their members. Oct. 20 '77. Makes the lyrics that much more haunting. R.I.P.
3 months and 18 days. This footage is both fun to watch and upsetting to watch.
The plane crash was about 45minutes from me in Ms.. I was at the movie theater when it happened I was 13 at the time.
@@JohnSmith-mu4to ughhh, so terrible! I actually live in Omaha Nebraska and Clear Lake Iowa where Buddy Holly’s plane went down is about an hour and a half away. I have been there to pay respect
@@JohnSmith-mu4to, wow. I used to live in Ms. too. Grenada. In the early 80s in high school. Never thought about it much then. Do now.
@@Tbirdhaynes, the day the music died. Another tragic day in history. RIP to Buddy, Richie, and The Big Bopper.
I'm a 65 Yr old woman an this 1 is my all time fav song, just never ever ever tire of it, 1 of the greatest guitar solos ever. It needs youngsters like you to keep this wonderful music alive, luving ur enjoyment a great reaction. ❤❤❤
I am a 60 year old woman with a 38 y/o boyfriend. We both love this song even though he was not alive when it came out. btw... I am not a grandmother.. never will be.. lol
I was there
remember..... it's bingo and butterscotch pudding tonight ladies..... if you see the night nurse can you let her know I need a diaper change?
I'll be 65 in June. Skynyrd is still my favorite. If I'm driving, it gets turned ALL the way up. I've got the greatest hits collection, (4) C'D's. Listen to them all the time. I'll never be too old.
@@wadehines9971 Me too! Those were the days!!!
Its the original line up🤘❤️ the real skynyrd
Not technically the originals, but this is the last lineup before the crash. Some people get really testy about who is or isn't actually original. I separate them into Ronnie era or cover band. This is my favorite lineup of Ronnie era.
Not necessarily... Steve Gains was introduced a few yrs latr..(3rd album) and they may have a diff drummer.. can't tell from this vid. But I think it's the 2nd
@@LarsFunkRoad This video is Artemis, the 2nd drummer.
One of the original guitarists was Ed King.
@@Pokafalva No, the originals were Ronnie, Gary, Allen, Bob Burns (drums) and Larry Junstrom (bass). Leon replaced Larry, then Ed replaced Leon. Leon came back and Ed went to 3rd guitar.
The Singer was Ronnie Van Zant . He was the GOAT of frontmen ! The dude playing the slide guitar next to Ronnie was Gary Rossington . He was using an old ,old asprin bottle (Corasiden) to make the bird chirps and slide along with Ronnie's voice . Allen Collins was the maniac with the crazy hair in all white who went nuts at the end who really invented this song . 3 people on that stage were killed in the plane crash 3 months later including Ronnie .
Met Allen Collins in the Café of a JAX hospital late one night. I was on my lunch break with friends, and he was alone, worried, and stressing. Just a very polite man who needed to vent. We all talked for about 45 minutes, then showed him to the Chapel for privacy. Didn't need or ask for anything from him, just thankful to be returning a favor. ❤😢❤
@@mamabear9325 The deeper I dove into the band , I feel now that Allen was the showstopper of all the guitarists they had . Ed was great in studio ,but was in background live .Gary also seemed a bit on the shy side . Steve was a showman for sure and close to Allen ,but Collins was just explosive on stage and his timing always perfect . JMO .
Ronnie and Rober Plant my favorite frontmen❤
Allen Collins will always be my dream! I’m 60 and I’ve loved Allen since I was 14. Beautiful man and GOAT!
He absolutely was. It took some time for me to piece it al together but Allen was the defining sound of LS behind RVZ.
The finest live performance of any band or song that I've ever witnessed, be it in person or on video.
Btw, that is Ronnie Van Zant on vocals.
One of the greatest bands ever, and sad as well
@@juanitastephens3077
That is so true Juanita. Exceptional musicians and too much tragedy and untimely deaths.
They are special, that is why they live on, generation after generation.
Then you're in for a real treat when you watch Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird (Live 1976 at Knebworth Festival)! As killer as this one is, their Knebworth performance is as good or better!
I still miss them. Going to a Skynyrd concert was an EXPERIENCE. 🔥🤟🏼
@@SmokeyTreats
The icing on the cake was when Ronnie walked onto the (Rolling Stones) tongue portion of the stage, and called Rossington, Collins, Gaines and Wilkeson over to join him. I say this because Mick Jagger had warned the other bands to not go onto the tongue area.
This is one of those songs that should be required listening for anyone with even a mild interest in rock & roll, and this live version is one of the best in all of the "live" genre. If not for video footage, it may have been lost to time and maybe not even believed, as this performance is just mind blowing.
For a VERY cheap ticket price (a few bucks, usually!), we spent the best years of our lives watching absolute LEGENDS perform for us!! I feel blessed to have these memories & to count Skynyrd & other greats among those who made up the soundtrack of my youth. There will never be another time like that again.
That's Ronnie on lead vocals
Johnny was only 16 when Ronnie died. Gary Rossington playing the slide guitar in the beginning, and then Allen Collins shredding on the last half. With Steve Gaines on guitar as well, Leon Wilkeson on bass, Artimus Powell on drums, and Billy Powell on the piano.
Skynyrd was different, there live shows are bad@$$. Never to be duplicated.
Thanks for the reaction.
This is original Skynyrd. That is Ronnie singing, Allen, Steve, and Gary on guitar, Leon on bass, Billy on piano, and Artimus playing drums. Best group ever.
5 :String instruments sounding amazing together....3 lead guitars....1 bass guitar and 1 piano
And yet, they still call it a SOLO.
Congratulations you have just witnessed basically the pinnacle of classic rock, southern rock, anthem rock, etc. Watching a virgin react to this one is fulfilling. Thank you for your reactions.
I've asked my kids to play Freebird at my funeral reception/party and it will be the last thing I hear in this world as my spirit flies around the room during that solo and I touch everyone on the way out. Great reaction man. ❤️😎💯🔥😂👍
Same
YOUR reaction was PRICELESS! One of the best I've seen.❤ So glad you were open to listening to us Boomers' music! 😂 It was/is the BEST music ever. In all genres. Have you reacted to "Call Me the Breeze". Another fav of mine that's fire! Lol
I was right there standing on that stage that day. Met those guys in Atlanta in the early 70,s , and from that time on we all were like brothers. Now they've all gone to that great concert in heaven, I truly miss each one of them. October 1977 was a very sad and heartbreaking time for the fans, friends, and family's of those that lost their lives that day. Ohh how I wish I could play one more time with all those guy's.
Thanks for the reaction
Actually the drummer in this video Artimus Pyleis still alive and Gary Rossington just died last year.
@@sharonhoyt2133 Artimus isn't the original drummer but I know Artimus. Gary lived about fifteen miles from me we talked at least once a week, now that he's gone I still talk with Dale.
Lol my baby (Grandma) still smoking hot to me. 😍 Thank you for the reaction..
Allen Collins, was the guitar player in all white, long hair. Steve Gaines was the other guitarist playing with Allen in the end, tragically he left us when the plane crashed too, along with his sister Cassie Gaines, who was a backup singer for the band
A generational banger anthem, for sure. After the plane crash, I saw his brother’s band, 38 Special, in Jersey several years later. They paid homage to LS brilliantly.
Love your reaction!
This is my all time favorite song. I’m 73 and still enjoying it. Good to see your reaction you’ve experienced one of the best, oh and that was Ronnie singing thank you.
72 here on my playlist for 50 years now.
We grew up with the best music good times still loving it.
Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd also on my play list!@@user-yj7iq6um8g
Please keep the music my generation alive❤🙏
I was there bro! Even saw myself in that video… a sea oh humanity. The best closing song in music history. Skynyrd played before Peter Frampton that day. Ronnie Van Zandt was singing… that was 3 months before the plane crash that killed him 😢. Have been lucky to see them 20 times in the last 46 years 🤩
Man I'm getting old, this was about a month before my 6th birthday. My mom passes away a few months later. Rest in Peace mom.
Lynard Skynard
Freebird
This year is 50 years since Freebird was released on their debut album.
Loved your reaction brother. Wasn't there but Skynyrd was my first concert in 75. This was our class song in 77. Makes my day when another member is added to the Skynyrd family. Now it's time for you to dive deeper into some album cuts. Don't get the wrong idea about the flag. We flew them as a way to give the man the middle finger. Rock N Roll is about being a Rebel. Isn't it?
Flag is mostly recognized as Southern Pride.
No one said anything about the flag. What's your problem?
This is the original band before the plane crash happened that same year I believe so it’s Ronnie Van zant singing
wasn't the original band with Ed King?
@@shasta810 Original band was Ronnie, Allen, Gary, Bob Burns (drums) and Larry Junstrom (bass). Leon replaced Larry, then Ed replaced Leon, Leon came back and Ed went to 3rd guitar.
I saw them live in August '77. It was so shocking what happened after.
Great reaction ! I read that alot of the girls in the crowd were really there to see PETER FRAMPTON who was the next band to play. you need to watch him do BABY I LOVE YOUR WAYS LIVE from same concert !! also remember back then the fans never got to see their idols in person at all, and there was no TV of concerts , of them playing or youtube only the record ,LP cover photos ,so when you finally got to see them at a concert it was like once in a life time event ! very very SPECIAL !
Gary Rossington is the guitarist you're impressed with so far. He's playing slide on his guitar. If you look close, you can see a clear plastic tube on his finger and he drags that down to make the notes stretch out. He was the last founding member to die maybe 6-8 months ago. My favorite is Allen Collins, all in white but he stands back until it's solo time.
I've been watching your videos for a while, and I have to say that watching your excitement as you listen to music that is new to you but old to me brings a new excitement to me listening to it again. You really add something good to the experience. I appreciate you. Keep on rockin' man.
This video is a great example of why its important to watch live performances. Seeing music being made, who is doing what and how hyped the crowds get . It's refreshing to know people like you will keep thus music alive for generations to come. I love your energy
My first concert ever, 1977 Skynyrd at the Long Beach Arena, CA. They finished the concert with this song, as usual, and they were absolutely electrifying. They set the standard for me, for what a concert should be like! And yes, those Grandmas are still hot to me!
You should react to Chicago 25 or 26 to 4 live at tanglewood 1970 it has One of the greatest live guitar solos by Terry Kath rest in peace and amazing horn section
My sister was there, she was beautiful and hung out with them many times. Oh, and she's a grandma now! Time flies!
Lynyrd Skynyrd concert, August 27, 1977, Great concert, 19 years old. October 20, 1977 😢😢 plane crash
Maybe the greatest American rock & roll song ever🔥🤘🇺🇸🤘🔥
The unofficial rock anthem of the south. Southern rock as its finest. If you haven't already, check out the live version of Marshall Tucker Band's Can't You See from 1973 in Macon. Toy Caldwell, the fastest thumb in the south, will blow you away.
Love Southern Rock ❤
No, this IS the Southern Rock Anthem...!
One thing to consider about Lynyrd Skynyrd is their backyard of Jacksonville, Florida.
They grew up around a wide assortment of various bands in the area, and like all bands they
competed with one another, but were also there for one another if need be.
And most if not all of them were dirt arse poor.
This attitude helped develop the Southern Rock scene from a small area of the country.
As they would often play with one another, if they were short a band member.
An example of this can be heard in the band "Blackfoot", which was founded by a native American
born in the area, Rick Medlocke, who of course is of the Blackfoot tribe.
After the plane crash Blackfoot released their "Strikes" album, the song "Highway Song" was dedicated
to the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who were killed on the plane crash.
If one listens to the song, you get the Lynyrd Skynyrd vibe for sure.
Later Rick Medlocke, became one of the guitarists for the revamped Lynyrd Skynyrd.
And when the band was being attacked for displaying the "Flag of the army of northern Virginia",
thus an attempt by media to brand them as racists, Medlocke pointed out, growing up & interacting
with members of Lynyrd Skynrd, he had no doubt that none of them were racist in any way.
Citing "Look I'm a native American, I'm a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, do you really think I would be playing
with them if they were racist?"
And while the band stated the displaying of the flag was purely a heritage pride display, they also understood
how it was hijacked & stolen by a type of people they don't associate with.
That part of us history exists, & have made the choice to no longer display the flag.
Their last concert, Johnny Van Zant drapped a U.S. flag over the microphone.
As, you stated this was exceptional. This was one of their all time best performances. Solid talent & beautiful.
When you watch that again, pay attention to the guitarist behind RONNIE. He blends in finishing Ronnie's lyric. Amazing the little details they used.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird, great footage.
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!! They have an immense catalog of music ya can't go wrong with.
All by mid-20's. Their story and tragic plane crash is just as amazing.
SO much music in such a short time. Dig in!!!
The Allman Brothers are right there with them!
And the then-kid behind Ronnie (the lead singer) on slide guitar just very recently passed away. You can see the video on youtube of him performing this song for the last time. Such a tragic history for this band. But they certainly aren't the only ones.
Good song to be your #1,,,,💥💥💥👍😎
So on their live record Ronnie asks the crowd, “What song is it you all wanna hear” and the crowd screams “FREEBIRD”. Thats how it started yelling it at any concert😅
Gary Rossington is the guitarist standing behind Ronnie Vanzant (not Johnny Vanzant, younger brother that took over) when Ronnie left us a few months later in a plane crash
"Give Me Three Steps"❤
Ronnie Was The Leader of Lynyrd Skynyrd . After the plane crash , little brother Johnny became just their lead singer . HUGE difference .
I told you it was a must see❤ The guitar solos are Crazy😂
Any time is a good time for Lynyrd Skynyrd !❤ Bringing back high school memories. 😊
Wow this brings back memories, I saw Skynyrd in 1977 on Long Island just before the plane crash. At my high school... All you heard playing was "Free bird" !!
This was the original lead singer, Ronnie Van Sant, just a few months before the fateful plane crash. Such a tragic loss. 😥...They were so awesome live!
That’s the original Ronnie! Great Music!
1977 was a great year, the year I graduated from high school. I remember all these concerts and went to alot of them. This song is epic from the 70's.
This song was my intro to Rock -n- Roll when I was 8 years old. Heard it on a little hand held AM band radio. My buddy and I were blown away. Sweet memories. Eventually I went heavy with Sabbath and Maiden. But I still love this music genre, Skynyrd, SRV, ZZ. I'm getting old now and my days of sin are over. I stick with Jesus. Still love to hear these tunes once in a while though. Gets the blood bumping.
I've seen them live 4 times ! Twice with the Doobie Brothers, always a great show!
I was 20 years old in 1977! This was one of the athems of my generation! I am a grandmother now and this grandma saw them in Beaumont,Texas! What a concert! Great music never goes out of style!
Shown we got to show the drummer a lot of respect on this he killed it. Now even tho I love Free Bird my fav song is On The Hunt I promise you won't regret it so smooth and honey that was Ronnie singing just a few months before 5or6 of them die in the plane crash so sad I was eleven but remember it like it was yesterday never looked at Skynyrd the same way. Johnny is a good man but will never be Ronnie loved the reaction ❤❤❤❤ R.I.P to all who died gone but not forgotten😢😢😢
I saw them in Atlanta, GA in 1974. It was my 19 birthday. Great present! Great reaction. Thanks! 😊
First album I ever bought and I played the hell out of it, Im so glad I grew up with these guys!!! Best southern rock band ever no doubt!!!
I saw them in the early 70's a couple times and when they played this the ceiling tiles fell down. Good Times 😊
Awesome reaction!! There are 4 guitarists. A few weeks after this concert the grounds crew found dozens of pot plants growing in the outfield!!! Leftover gifts!!🤣🤣🎶🎼🎵🎸🎤🎧🥁🎹🔥🤘🤘🤘
Alan Collins playing that fabulous Gibson Firebird. 🎸♥️✌🏼😎
Kudos to the drummer for keeping up. 🤘🏽
Thanks!
I am a 64 year old Great-Grandma. This song will be played at my funeral. I graduated in 1977! Best years of my life.
Keep great music alive my man. Now that their all gone “RIP”.
It doesnt happen here, but on the concert where they open for the Stones and the Winterland ballroom....I love when Ronnie whistles and says bring all my mules out here, and 3 lead guitarist and and the bass come out front and and center!! ❤❤ what a showman and leader if the band. This is Ronnie and for a long time after his death it , it was considered blasphemous that anyone even his brother take over for him. FLY HIGH SWEET BIRDS, YALL ARE ALL GONE NOW, BUT YOU AND YOUR MUSIC WILL LIVE ON , FOREVER❤❤😢😢❤❤
i told my kids when they were little that free bird was the national anthem.
this performance was skynyrds gift to mankind just before their plane crashed
I was at this concert. We drove down from Humboldt Co. Im pushing 70, and this is one of my favorite memories. Pot was flowing and it was a hot sunny day. I'm so glad I can see this 40 years later. Thank you!!
Oh yea Shon, 3 guitars and a bassist, (on the right), killer combo! Peace bruh😉
I was at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert in the late 1970's. It was unbelievable, and Freebird brought the house down! Congratulations on loving the best of the best in American Rock and Roll.
That was Ronnie on the lead vocal. It took him awhile to sort out how the lyrics would compose with the music but when he did the rest was history! Allen Collins composed the musical beat to the song. Adding Billy Powell to the piano for this made this even bigger imo. Powell was actually a roadie for the band & when they discovered his talents it made this more legendary imo
As a grandma.... I agree with that statement. We were pretty damn cool. 😎 😊
Every time I listen to you I just am so amped up after! It’s 10:30 pm in Oklahoma on a Monday night and you are making me want to go out and hoop it up! Love ya!
I saw them the next day in Oklahoma at Willie's 4th of July picnic. They were in the plane crash that fall, so was a real treat. That place was messed up with drunk singers and crowd but a whole lot of fun in Oklahoma and it was hotter than hell, LOL. The only Willie's picnic that was held outside of Texas was on July 3, 1977 in Tulsa. You see a sea full of healthy bodies out there...especially California, but all of us were pretty hot back then in our crop tops and shorts and this is how we got to see our bands was in concerts. And this is Ronnie singing. Wish they would have gotten some videos in Tulsa, I think I've mostly seen photos online. Would be fun for some of these people to see themselves on video now wouldn't it?
They executed "drop the mic" before I think it was a term, and it was well-deserved.
This was in 1977, one of the 'Concert On The Green' series they had that summer. All the girls are probably there for Peter Frampton who was also there along with Santana and I think the Outlaws. Peter's 'Frampton Comes Alive' album was huge back then.
This is bar none my favorite version of this amazing tune. This is Ronnie about 3 months before the plane crash that killed him. Cheers.
I was there- these concerts were called A Day On the Green. 5 bands, starts at 10am and you hang out with friends enjoying the music. I grew up in the Bay Area and went to these all the time. Glad you enjoyed!
I'm 63... it does a heart good to see you young 'uns enjoying a little ditty from back in our day.👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦
Loved watching your reaction to this performance! This was truly one of the best concerts ever!
This was "Day On The Green", Billy Graham presents at Oakland Coliseum. I had just graduated from high school and a bunch of us piled in a van and saw this concert, among many at the same venue...Love, Love Love Lynyrd Skynrd!
Forby Leonard Skinner (January 11, 1933 - September 20, 2010) was a high school teacher in which Lynyrd Skynyrd; Skinner was the band members' teacher.
Bro, the amount of money on that stage with the instruments is priceless.
This is one of my top all time songs , thank you Shon for the great reaction!
A time when cell phones and ugly advertisements didn't pollute the landscape! Love it!🥳🥳
This was three months before the plane crash in October 20. God bless them all all the original ones of Skynyrd are together again.
Such an amazing song. When this was released, I dont think I knew one person from ages 13 to 25 that as soon as we heard it claimed it to be played at our funerals. The 70s were the best, especially the music. Thanx so much, Peace
Allen Collins still has one of TV's best solos of all time
The slide guitar sounds is so unique and satisfying. You're gonna want some Allman Brothers Band ;)
Jimmy Page on In My Time of Dying by Led Zeppelin ;)
Some of the best solos ever. Rip.
i was lucky enough to have a mother that was a bit of a 'Hippie', so she believe in taking me with her everywhere she went. Due to this i was very lucky in experiencing many different musical artists growing up & Lynyrd Skynyrd was among them. If back then had been anything like how it is today people would have complained about Mom bringing me with her to places filled with adults, doing what is considered 'adult'. I just realized that it's been 48 years since Mom took me to see Lynyrd Skynyrd in San Fransisco CA for the first time when i was just a baby/toddler. Growing up Mom liked to remind me 'that i didnt come with a Manuel when i was born' so she may not have given me a 'normal' childhood. Looking back on all the interesting people & things i was exposed to growing up made me very lucky.
I grew up listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Freebird is one of my all time fav songs ever!! This live show must have been phenomenal to be there live! I was 12.. so I was not there LOL.. I would have loved to see them live! Thanks Shon!
Being there was free and easy. No cameras, no phones, and obviously no sunscreen in those days! We just partied and listened to the other bands too. Peter Frampton and Santana were the other two bands who played that day. Great day of memories to last a lifetime. No pics or recordings are needed. It is in our souls.
Yes sir Ronnie we still remember you…
Southern Rock at it's finest!🤩
Loved your reaction, thanks man! Now watch Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird (Live 1976 at Knebworth Festival). As killer as this Oakland performance is, their Knebworth performance was as good if not better!
Gotta love them southern boys!!!🎸🎸🎸
my mom wanted this played at her funeral..we rocked it out for her...love you mom..R.I.P.
This was our background noise for life. So many pivotal moments in so many lives. Generational music.
An all-time fave song. Had it on a 45. Thanks for the reminder of what going to live concerts, back in the 70s, was like. What a trip!
I was a year old when this concert happened but luckily my mother and my siblings introduced me to this among other great music from this era, before and after. My friends used to say my music tastes were weird but now they be listening to the same music I grew up listening to. I never really had just one genre of music, I had phases. 😂😂😂 But my music collection always had everything from the Beach Boys, Frankie Valen to the Doors and Led Zeppelin, to Queen and Kansas, to Rick Springfield and Richard Marx to DMX and Snoop Dogg to Marilyn Manson and Korn as well as everything in between each of those. Then you add in Celtic music, Native American, particularly native American flute music, and tejano music. I pretty much listen to everything including some classical music.
