    This is actually a true story. Many years ago, Mark was walking in London in the rain, and he was attracted by the sound of a jazz band playing in a bar one lunch time and he popped in out of the rain to see what they were all about. The band was called The Sultans of Swing and there was hardly anyone watching & listening except a bunch of young guys who were not particularly enjoying the music and were playing around with each other. I've often wondered what happened to the band. After all, Mark & Dire Straits by releasing this song gave them one hell of a publicity boost! Mark Knopfler is one of our greatest songwriter/performer/storytellers here in the UK and the band have many incredible hits in their songbook. They never made a bad song. EVER. Nice reaction Shon, many thanks! 🙋‍♂

    Mark Knopfler is one of the very few people in the world that can ask Eric Clapton to play rhythm guitar and Clapton will drop everything to do it. He is literally the greatest finger-style rock guitar player the world has seen. He never uses a pick, just his thumb and first two fingers.

The band calls themselves "The Sultans of Swing" and then introduce their members, George and Harry. Then, the club is closing for the night so "it's time to go home", but remember us, the band, we are The Sultans of Swing.

      Hmm... 1983... I'm only a few years younger than you. I can't fully understand what you're saying. By this year '83, some big names had already left and I couldn't watch them on stage anymore. That's why I would put it this way... We were blessed with an enormous amount of world-class music that had been created up to that point. But we couldn't watch everything live anymore because a number of big artists were no longer with us. Nevertheless, we were fortunate. The grace of early birth...

      Well, there was plenty of great music to come after 1983... to still hit the airwaves and charts (as well as the stage... with incredible, live performances...)...
      However, if we'd known how bleak the future would turn out to be musically, I think we'd been way more appreciative of what we got to witness live, back in the day...
      I mean, there was no auto tune back then, an artist had to have natural talent instrumentally and/or vocally - nothing was 'corrected' and packaged as a 'product' (or aggressively 'remastered'...) the way its been done since the late 1990's.

      @melchiorvonsternberg844 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lena-mariaglouis-charles7036 Who are you telling this to...! I remember the 80s very well. And I know very well what great artists the 80s and even the 90s had in store for us. Nevertheless, the 80s were rather mixed musically. Do you remember Joe Dolce? I hated his song! As a German, I constantly had to endure the noise of “modern talking”. They were the local heros... A nightmare! And Michael Jackson, who I couldn't stand either, was everywhere all the time. However, the "New German Wave" also took place at the beginning of the 80s, so I didn't get the full effect of Jackson's absolute heyday. And a bunch of stuff that, thank God, I successfully suppressed. But all in all, the 80s passed with a plus musically. This was not least because I was able to see a lot of musicians live that I was too young to see in the 70s...

    • @lena-mariaglouis-charles7036
      @lena-mariaglouis-charles7036 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I most certainly remember Joe 'Shaddap You Face' Dolce - his 1981 performance on 'Top Of The Pops' was an experience to behold...
      The late, great Michael Jackson (together with the marvelous Quincy Jones - and others...) brought us tracks that were nothing short of pure genius...
      And, every time one of his songs hit the turntable, the dance floor would fill beyond capacity...
      Yes, many music (and big screen...) greats passed on too soon in the 1950's, '60's, '70's and '80's... and it seems that this has continued to be the case in the following decades, as well...

    Look in to how he wrote this song. It's really about a local band that was called the sultans of swing.

    You cannot imagine how this sounded live in 1985 at the NEC, such a great night👍👍👍👍
    The guitarist vertuosity of the guys is incredible, then add in the drums to fill in, they are a four piece orchestra.

    You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
    Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
    They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
    When he gets up under the lights to play his thing

    As a lifelong Pink Floyd fan, I have absolutely no problems admitting that the live Alchemy performances of Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road are on the same beautiful, inspirational, emotional level as the live Pulse and Delicate Sound of Thunder versions of Comfortably Numb and On The Turning Away. My two favourite rock guitarists of all time, ever. Thank you Mark and David. For making me cry every time I listen to these masterpieces.

    Yes!!! Couldn't get enough of the music that I grew up with, it may have been 4 something decades ago but it always seemed like it was just for us. The anesthesia guy during my surgery asked me what music I would like to hear as I was going under, I said give me some Supertramp, C.C.R. and James Browne! Best sleep I've had in surgery ever. 😅😊

    There are many perfect songs out there and this is one of the best. Mark Knofpler is playing his guitar like a banjo..... he is the only guy I know who has done this style. Yes Terry Williams is amazing the drummer for Tina Turner as well. Amazing at best.

    Yes, we have to props to the drummer, Terry Williams, he's just SO good on this! Precision drumming done at super high speed, drives the whole song! And of course Mark kills it thru out also, the whole band is just so fun and so good!

    If I could choose to go back in time to see any twenty live performances from the last sixty years, there is no doubt Dire Straits at Alchemy would be one of them. BTW, the studio version of this song is also worth a listen. Different, but also perfection in its own path. This live version though has the best implementation of tempo changes I can immediately recall. You nailed it when you called this "Ten Minutes of Perfection". It truly does live up to that statement. That whole band works as one unit, producing the very best of music.

    I love this performance so much and loved your reaction. The dynamics of this performance (change in tempo and loudness) is so amazing. Plus, I love how much fun they are having. It’s contagious. Since you asked for suggestions of other artists, I have to give you some Prince suggestions… anything from 2009 Montreux Jazz Fest (my favorites are Empty Room/Elixir, Little Red Corvette, and All the Critics Love U), America, I Wanna Be Your Lover/Head (from Parade tour in Detroit), Shhh, The Question of U, Nothing Compares 2 U (from Glam Slam), Play That Funky Music/Hollywood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage, Ripopgodazippa, and, of course, Purple Rain. There are so many great live performances, but I love the one from the 1985 American Music Awards. Thanks for bringing so much joy to your reactions. You always make me smile!
