"10 minutes of perfection"... Never have truer words been said.
This is actually a true story. Many years ago, Mark was walking in London in the rain, and he was attracted by the sound of a jazz band playing in a bar one lunch time and he popped in out of the rain to see what they were all about. The band was called The Sultans of Swing and there was hardly anyone watching & listening except a bunch of young guys who were not particularly enjoying the music and were playing around with each other. I've often wondered what happened to the band. After all, Mark & Dire Straits by releasing this song gave them one hell of a publicity boost! Mark Knopfler is one of our greatest songwriter/performer/storytellers here in the UK and the band have many incredible hits in their songbook. They never made a bad song. EVER. Nice reaction Shon, many thanks! 🙋♂
Yeah I was thinking about it, that bad band, give to Dire Straits one of the best songs ever
Least they could do is release a song named Straights of Dire or something.
But just think. If Mark had taken a left in that rain, instead of a right, we could be listening to a song about the Spice Girls right now!
🤯🤣
Mark 100% deserves the title as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
@@robbob5302 Doubt it since most of them werent even born yet lol.
I hate social media as a concept but having TH-cam introduce music to people and see the smile on your face makes it worthwhile
I love these reaction videos for exactly that reason. Seeing their joy in discovering all this music is wonderful.
Agree
Mark Knopfler is one of the very few people in the world that can ask Eric Clapton to play rhythm guitar and Clapton will drop everything to do it. He is literally the greatest finger-style rock guitar player the world has seen. He never uses a pick, just his thumb and first two fingers.
I read somewhere, don’t know if it’s true, that Prince was once asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist. He said he didn’t know, ask mark knopfler. I like the story anyway.
Everyone is killing it here, but I gotta give props to that drummer. He is driving that song with everything he's got and having a blast doing it.
That was the first time the drummer was performing in front of his father.
@@Tremain Wow, yeah ok, now I can see why the band went all out on this night.
Terry Willams is an underrated drummer.
@@user-sm2ql7nq4l Not any more!
“Ten minutes of perfection.”
No reactor or critic has ever summed this song up better.
👍🏻
I could listen to this performance everyday for the rest of my life and be just as moved every time.
Doin just that.....
Perfection is addictive!
Those drum, those drums, that drummer......Elevates this particular version to an entirely different level 🔥
The drummer is Terry Williams from Swansea, Wales. 🏴
Hell yeah, he's killing it on that kit!
@@barrymedwin7197and he certainly Wales on those drums 🥁 😎
One of the best performances ever. He killed it. If his dad wasn't proud of him after seeing Terry Williams play for the first time, then he is deaf.
I agree entirely, but to be honest it was because he was part of a fantastic team of musicians that this performance is so great!
He's telling a story about going to a small club to escape the rain. In there, he sees this little mediocre band playing jazz. The band calls themselves "The Sultans of Swing" and then introduce their members, George and Harry. Then, the club is closing for the night so "it's time to go home", but remember us, the band, we are The Sultans of Swing.
This is one of the most awesome performances ever by any band. 💖💖💖
Terry Williams on drums !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could watch Terry do those magic drum rolls all day
Have you seen the documentary on him?
One of very few songs and performances that can bring a tear to the eyes for pure perfection, pure joy. This is a masterful stage performance
This is a masterpiece of a live performance if I ever heard one. Mark Knopfler is one of the most underrated guitarists/composers of his time. He bests all the greats......Clapton, Hendrix, Santana and the list goes on. And........he's finger picking like he's playing a damn banjo. Rest of the band ain't bad either 😎 . Long live Dire Straits and Rock' n Roll
Although Mark is not an underrated player to people who know/other guitarists! 😊
The drummers parents was in the audience watching him live for the 1st time and he held nothing back.
Didn't know that tidbit! Thank you.
Rumor. They saw him perform many times.
I've heard it in 35 years over 1000+ times and this still gives me goosebumps. The best recorded live rock performance in history
Amen
The whole of Alchemy live was perfection. No doubt.
@@maryshea603 it certainly is!!
Yep
One of the greatest live performances of any song by any band. Mark Knopfler is a true master.
This is Dire Straits 1st hit. Yeah, when they showed up in the big time, they kicked the doors in! That guy on the guitar is Mark Knopfler.
best guitar solo ever done...
Mark Knopfler.....don't NEVER forget it---he was AND still is the Sh*# !!!
no, hes the dogs Bo**ocks!
What you've just witnessed is all the work of the genius that is Mark Knopfler. He wrote the words, music, arranged it, sang it and played his guitar as only he can, as I said a genius, and as others have said a true story. This was 1983, 40 years ago.
TELEGRAPH ROAD from this same concert ALCHEMY LIVE next please, it's as good as this, another of Mr Knopflers masterpieces.
You won't be disappointed.
Well done ❤
Kopfler is is one of the few guitarists that does not wank off off when he is playing a solo..., there is always a melody in there..., and a story!
The drummer's (Terry Williams) dad was in the audience for the first time seeing them live. Mark Knopfler (lead singer) let Terry go wild on the drums!!! One of the best live performances EVER!! 🎶🎼🎵🥁🥁🥁🥁🎸🎸🎸🎸🎹🎹🎹🎹🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
It's a story about vastly talented and underappreciated musicians.
And there are many :)
I love how you get just how good this song is.
Sultans of Swing , Probably one of the greatest live performances of any band of all time. Once you start listening to it you can't turn it off knowing what's coming.
Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Amen to all of that! 🙋♂
@@jeffstevens4262 Hell, yeah!!
Maybe I'm a purist, but I really did not like this version. Probably would have been different if I had been there.
The studio version is incredible.
@@robertfaison5321 Wow. I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions.
@@jeffstevens4262 Hey, I didn't mean to cause offense! My issue is pretty simple.
I wanted to sing along with the song.
I'd never heard this version before. And it messed with my expectations. I'm sure people love it, but it wasn't for me.
Studio version for life.
OMG the drummer! Mark Knoffler always incredible guitar!
What a performance. I remember the first time i heard this song. I knew it was great.
A real master storyteller. Not least an absolute guitar virtuoso is Mark Knopfler. The band are one of a kind. They will be listened to for eternity. Great reaction to this one of many masterpieces penned by Knopfler.
This entire performance Is aces but man the drummer is going absolutely bonkers He's my favorite here
Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and I would argue, the best finger picking guitarist in the world. The drummer, Terry Williams, was on fire. Terry is now retired in Wales, at the age of 75.
Aloha. I agree with you about Mark. Listened to him many years after Dire Straits.
Crazy to watch how your way of talking about music and breaking down tracks is evolving, really a great channel bruh, keep it up!
One of the better reactions I've seen to this song. Your enthusiasm is infectious and your analysis is spot on. The little flourishes that Mark adds highlight parts of the story he's telling. Not only that but Mark is just one cool mfer. He is in total control of his instrument, the band and the crowd. Hands down one of the single best performances of all time.
Probably the best live performance ever!
The drummer drives every song. This drummer, this song, he lifts it up.
Mark Knopfler is easily in my top five favorite guitarists! I agree that this is miles above the studio! Another great reaction. I NEVER pass up an opportunity to see someone react to this! Thanks!
Agreed. MK is just on another level.
Agreed

Gracias Shon!!! Como siempre, excelente reacción y al Gran Mark Knopfler ❤ y Dire Straits .
Me facino viendo a los jóvenes como tú disfrutar la música de mi juventud.
Gracias 🙏🙏🙏. Un abrazo enorme 🤗
The track Telegraph Road tells an even better, far more extreme story about the winter harsh conditions in the USA in general and in that track - US Michigan.
Now you know how the slang “guitar gods” started 🤓💕
Being at this live performance as a 22 year old (back in 1983...) - and feeling the music with every fiber of my being... I dare say we didn't know at the time how truly spoiled we were, musically speaking...
THANK YOU for keeping great music alive!💕
Hmm... 1983... I'm only a few years younger than you. I can't fully understand what you're saying. By this year '83, some big names had already left and I couldn't watch them on stage anymore. That's why I would put it this way... We were blessed with an enormous amount of world-class music that had been created up to that point. But we couldn't watch everything live anymore because a number of big artists were no longer with us. Nevertheless, we were fortunate. The grace of early birth...
@@melchiorvonsternberg844
Well, there was plenty of great music to come after 1983... to still hit the airwaves and charts (as well as the stage... with incredible, live performances...)...
However, if we'd known how bleak the future would turn out to be musically, I think we'd been way more appreciative of what we got to witness live, back in the day...
I mean, there was no auto tune back then, an artist had to have natural talent instrumentally and/or vocally - nothing was 'corrected' and packaged as a 'product' (or aggressively 'remastered'...) the way its been done since the late 1990's.
@@lena-mariaglouis-charles7036 Who are you telling this to...! I remember the 80s very well. And I know very well what great artists the 80s and even the 90s had in store for us. Nevertheless, the 80s were rather mixed musically. Do you remember Joe Dolce? I hated his song! As a German, I constantly had to endure the noise of “modern talking”. They were the local heros... A nightmare! And Michael Jackson, who I couldn't stand either, was everywhere all the time. However, the "New German Wave" also took place at the beginning of the 80s, so I didn't get the full effect of Jackson's absolute heyday. And a bunch of stuff that, thank God, I successfully suppressed. But all in all, the 80s passed with a plus musically. This was not least because I was able to see a lot of musicians live that I was too young to see in the 70s...
I most certainly remember Joe 'Shaddap You Face' Dolce - his 1981 performance on 'Top Of The Pops' was an experience to behold...
The late, great Michael Jackson (together with the marvelous Quincy Jones - and others...) brought us tracks that were nothing short of pure genius...
And, every time one of his songs hit the turntable, the dance floor would fill beyond capacity...
Yes, many music (and big screen...) greats passed on too soon in the 1950's, '60's, '70's and '80's... and it seems that this has continued to be the case in the following decades, as well...
@@melchiorvonsternberg844 I'm with you about MJ....
Ah memories , driving along the south coast of England in an old vintage Jaguar with Dire Straits blaring out around 1985! Feels like yesterday when listening to this , bliss,,,,,,
I love seeing younger people getting turned on to the music from the era I grew up in.
You can really see the difference in our music from back in the day versus what they try to pass off as music today.
I really think it was just one of the many reasons my generation was overall happier and violence in society was rare unlike today!
I like some modern music. Have playlists full of Alt. But I am also happy to see younger people enjoy all the music. Our era seemed much more focused on really good abilities on instruments and, once we broke away from so much 1950s-early 60s pining over lost love, lyrics took a huge jump forward.
Facts.
I can't hear this performance enough and your reaction is PRICELESS!!
Look at the way they are looking and smiling at each other its almost like they cant believe how good they are playing and in the groove they are
I was fortunate enough to see this live back in 1985 in Houston, Texas. Best freaking concert I've EVER seen. So Amazing for sure.
Every Reaction = quote: "Perfection" ... every.single.time.
Amazing group, very underrated here in the states
It's called Crowd Control. Mark's a master
Dire Straits is such an awesome band!! There’s even footage of Princess Diana attending one of their concerts in the mid 80s. It was cool to see!!
Awww, thank you, man. You get Knopfler -- and this band. Thank you.
"Ten minutes of perfection". Couldn't have said it better myself man. Greatest live performance in the history of music, in my opinion. I love Knopfler. Have done since my dad woke me up to Telegraph Road when I was 5 years old. 38 years later I'm still loving him every single day. Great band, great guitarist, great songwriter. Thanks for reacting, and glad you enjoyed it to so much. Happy holidays man!
Tunnel of Love ❤️
Dire Straits Live is the first live album by the British rock band Dire Straits, released on 16 March 1984 by Vertigo Records internationally, and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. ( 40 years ago )
The Drumwork is so great
Best live performance ever 😊😊😊 - so glad I saw them live in the 80s.
Shon what a thrill it must have been for you to hear Sultans of Swing for the first time. I'm jelly for real. However, every time I hear it I too feel like I'm hearing it for the first time. One of the greatest songs ever recorded. This might have been the best drum performance I ever heard. I know it's the best lead guitar performance I ever heard. This is known by many as the best guitar riff ever recorded. It's a true story about the band dropping in on a bar performance of a swing band called the Sultans of Swing. Very brave of you to make this with no clothing on.
Dire straights Shon, Dire Straights 😂 is the correct pronunciation. Lead singer Mark Knopfler is a phenomenal guitarist, he slaps the strings, if you watch him. It's great to watch him at work. They were MASSIVE back in the late 70s early 80s, (in fact, they still are). ❤🎸⭐🌠
Hi Shon, I don’t know whom I did like more to watch. You, or Dire Straits. You really enjoyed watching the performance of Dire Straits fully. It’s very nice to see you reacting and go with this song.
Look in to how he wrote this song. It's really about a local band that was called the sultans of swing.
One of the greatest guitarist of all time , epic!!!
This is a great performance. It seems a lot more energetic than the studio version. I like the studio version too because it's so laid back and chill.
Mark Knopfler "Song for Sony Liston"
I saw them in Austin on this tour. Best live show I ever attended, and I attended a lot of shows.
YESSSS!! So glad you watched this performance. It is truly epic!! I absolutely love your reaction!! You will probably never see such a perfect live performance ever again.
You cannot imagine how this sounded live in 1985 at the NEC, such a great night👍👍👍👍
The guitarist vertuosity of the guys is incredible, then add in the drums to fill in, they are a four piece orchestra.
Hey, great reaction as always! Please note that he is fingerplaying with his right hand... No pick!
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
Ahh thank you. this is the mist joyful reaction to this song ever. It reminds me of the luckyness I experienced hearing this Performance for the first time.
As a lifelong Pink Floyd fan, I have absolutely no problems admitting that the live Alchemy performances of Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road are on the same beautiful, inspirational, emotional level as the live Pulse and Delicate Sound of Thunder versions of Comfortably Numb and On The Turning Away. My two favourite rock guitarists of all time, ever. Thank you Mark and David. For making me cry every time I listen to these masterpieces.
Yes!!! Couldn't get enough of the music that I grew up with, it may have been 4 something decades ago but it always seemed like it was just for us. The anesthesia guy during my surgery asked me what music I would like to hear as I was going under, I said give me some Supertramp, C.C.R. and James Browne! Best sleep I've had in surgery ever. 😅😊
Your reaction is priceless.❤️
There are many perfect songs out there and this is one of the best. Mark Knofpler is playing his guitar like a banjo..... he is the only guy I know who has done this style. Yes Terry Williams is amazing the drummer for Tina Turner as well. Amazing at best.
Shon, you just experienced the pinnacle live performance of "Sultans of Swing". Mark sang you a lullaby on those 6 strings!
Love this song, and when it comes to a Live Performance... Just doesn't get much better than that!!!🤘🏻
that drummer is the animal from the muppet show, unbelievable performence ❤👍👍❤
Good genuine reaction, now you get to share what we grew up with. 😉
❤Mark Knopfler ❤Dire Strights❤for you, Shon. You are as good at your job as they are at theirs. I've watched review on this particular song at least 25-30 times and you are in my top5. Thank you for your real joy and intelligent commentary. You get them and you get the song !
Great reaction to a great band, Shon. Another great guitar solo for you is 'For Your Love' done by Nils Lofgren.
Yes, we have to props to the drummer, Terry Williams, he's just SO good on this! Precision drumming done at super high speed, drives the whole song! And of course Mark kills it thru out also, the whole band is just so fun and so good!
I couldn't have said it better than you! 🎸🔥🔥🥁🔥🔥💥
Anything from Alchemy is 🔥

Thanks for subbing! Glad you enjoyed!
Awesome reaction. I love your appreciation of good music. This is absolute fire and great dynamics..up, down, up, down..near perfection. Its an experience. Love ya brother!
Possibly the best live performance ever! Only Pink Floyd could compare to this!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
As the saying goes, do something you love, and you'll never work a day in your life!
He knew they killed it!
If I could choose to go back in time to see any twenty live performances from the last sixty years, there is no doubt Dire Straits at Alchemy would be one of them. BTW, the studio version of this song is also worth a listen. Different, but also perfection in its own path. This live version though has the best implementation of tempo changes I can immediately recall. You nailed it when you called this "Ten Minutes of Perfection". It truly does live up to that statement. That whole band works as one unit, producing the very best of music.
I love this performance so much and loved your reaction. The dynamics of this performance (change in tempo and loudness) is so amazing. Plus, I love how much fun they are having. It’s contagious. Since you asked for suggestions of other artists, I have to give you some Prince suggestions… anything from 2009 Montreux Jazz Fest (my favorites are Empty Room/Elixir, Little Red Corvette, and All the Critics Love U), America, I Wanna Be Your Lover/Head (from Parade tour in Detroit), Shhh, The Question of U, Nothing Compares 2 U (from Glam Slam), Play That Funky Music/Hollywood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage, Ripopgodazippa, and, of course, Purple Rain. There are so many great live performances, but I love the one from the 1985 American Music Awards. Thanks for bringing so much joy to your reactions. You always make me smile!
Great reaction, your passion for good music shines through and you have a good understanding and ear for detail. 👍👏
13:41 the pure joy on your face awesome
Ain't this just the best live recording ever???
Great reaction!!! I just saw you in a TH-cam ad!
Shon ... your reaction was as inspiring as the music bro !!! Love it ❤
6:51 no pick all fingers...and you are the best reactor I have seen big ups to you bro
One of the best reaction vids, he gets it! This song is fire
All your reactions are excellent but I've gotta say this one was absolutely stellar. Hit the nail on the head on every point. Ten minutes of perfection indeed. Thanks Shon.😊😊😊❤
