  • Overheated my car and blew the headgasket(s) on my 2005 nissan 350z. The VQ35DE engines are notorious for blowing headgaskets so it is important to prevent overheating with this vehicle

the best test to do is a combustion block test with the blue fluid to see if it turns yellow when interacting with exhaust fumes in your radiator. But yea if you have the white smoke thats a tell tel sign. You should have also pulled your dipstick to verify that you had coolant mixed with your oil.

Bro air in the system doesn’t necessarily mean you have a blown head gasket! These cooling systems are known to get air in the system you have to bleed the air with the bleeder valve to burp all the air or your car will overheat and you will blow a head gasket !!!

I have the same symptoms as you! My issue on my 2010 FX35 is that when the coolant goes into the expansion tank, it does not get sucked back into the rad when it cools.... i often have to siphon back to rad once the engine is cold. I tried 4 brand new rad caps, new rad, new thermostat, hoses, coolant temp sensor, new metal heater valve etc.... bled and burped the system and have been having this issue since last summer. Whats wild is that i dont have any symptoms, except some light white smoke.... doesn't seem like I'm losing coolant, just need to keep siphoning from expansion tank to rad, if i don't do this, the car will overheat. If i drive more than 50 miles all the coolant ends up in the expansion tank, and theres a lot of gurgling behind steering wheel. I'm getting my head gasket replaced next week along with timing chain and water water pumps... 3500.00 for the job. I was thinking just doing the waterpump, but, i dont want to risk having the same exact issue and having to come out of pocket again.

Cost me 4200.00 but, the other option was to get rid of this car and purchase a newer one which would be alot more expensive than 4K. As long as i get an additional 2+ years with my car after this i'm happy. Now i need to change my downstream 02 sensors... and figure out what a rattle noise is when i put the car in drive, it's coming from where the cats are but i dont think i have bad cats when i hit them theres no rattle. I think its a rusted old bracket thats rattling but i dont have a lift to check.

I just bought a manual transmission beater car, I had to teach myself how to drive a stick when I bought it... last night I was being dumb and I redlined it and I saw a bunch of smoke coming out of it, thought I just burned the clutch though. I just took it for a short drive and inspected the exhaust when it was running and there wasn’t any vapor coming out of the exhaust (it’s like 48 degrees rn so I think it would show) do you think I just burned the clutch?

Just make sure to keep checking your oil levels. Don't know if you've fixed this issue yet or not? But it's a really easy job to do. I went ahead and got a new set of valve covers w/ gaskets and new hardware. I painted them an aluminum silver gloss color. Make sure to use a small film of RTV only on the front of the engine on the gasket. You don't need to RTV the whole thing. Just up front and maybe on the corners.
While I had everything apart I went ahead and installed a plenum spacer. I cleaned the inside really good, the upper and lower intakes as well. I also painted my plenum as well. I paid $55 on ebay for the valve covers, gaskets & hardware. I also went ahead and got 6 new laser platinum spark plugs for $24 on ebay. They usually go for $6 or so a pop. Ordered 6 new coil packs for $30 something on ebay as well. Car runs so much better now. Before the plenum would get so hot it'd burn me. Now I can drive 4 hrs straight and whenever I touch it, it's barely warm. Anyways the valve covers are an easy fix.
